    US citizen here. Let's not forget that American society has had a bias towards automobiles and airplanes for decades, almost killing passenger rail in the country. This was pretty much the entire reason for Amtrak's conception, and while it definitely has made improvements such as unifying the entire US interstate network and overall getting US passenger rail back on its feet, most Americans would simply rather drive themselves, or fly long distances because it's much faster than ground transport. It's largely because of our "always on the move and in a hurry" mentality.

    After many years of this coming out, nothing has changed, but the weirdest thing about the Articulated bus is that: They miscounted the seats, the image shows 61, it says 65, and on the BRT, the image shows 61, it says 107. That's impressive, I think these buses are in great hands if their able to put in invisible seats

    This is a total pet peeve for me too. Tho, to play devil’s advocate - are the features of frequency, capacity and full grade separation more important than the mode of transit? Who says a very high capacity, frequent bus service that is running on fully dedicated rights of ways with proper stations and off board fare payment isn’t a Metro? A BRT Metro, perhaps. But just because all metros to date have been rail, doesn’t mean they always need to be. For example what if there was a maglev Metro, or perhaps a hyperloop (god forbid) - assuming they approximated the capacity and other features of a rail based metro I don’t see why they can’t be called “Metro”. 😊

  • @rebeccawinter472
    @rebeccawinter472 2 месяца назад

    Great video! Australia is set up well for regional rail - it’s just a matter of upgrading the existing system from routes built in the 19th century. Better coordination, with increased frequencies, and even moderate speed improvements will bring rail travel time down to less than driving. If it can be cost competitive - with reasonably priced sleeper berths on long distance routes, it can really make chip away at the airline market. It makes sense to start with upgrades on the Sydney to Canberra route - it doesn’t need to be full high speed - but just making the route more direct so a trip takes 2 to 2.5 hours instead of almost 4 - this will be competitive with flying when you think of the time involved in going to the airport + security etc…

There just have to be improvements in this era of rising fuel prices and the environmental problems. Also, what about poor Tasmania where there is no passenger rail at all. Excellent video and sorry for this comment being 2 years after the fact 😄.

    I've actually found it quite useful for bike rides. If you ever need to access Shepard's hill for MTB it's really close, and after a finishing a ride further up north its been really convenient to hop on Flinders from Adelaide Showground after riding down Greenhill Rd, or hopping on at Emerson after riding down the Old Freeway bike path, and then ride up the expressway bike path, accessing Aberfoyle, Flagstaff and Happy Valley. It's a pretty niche use, but its actually been fairly useful for me.

    Not a lot of viewers here, for a topic that has been lot of neglect by Australian governments. Particularly the Federal government in Canberra. They (the national government) go for extremely expensive nuclear powered submarine warships, but can't fix national transport issues properly. Do you know how much new national railway could built for 370 billion (cost of 8 nuclear subs)? I can't speak for the viability of US rail services. Finally, I like to say that politically and e,economically the Western world in general, is again going down quite useless cul-de-sacs in land transport. EVs for example, despite the promise of but yet undelivered self-driving capabilities (lot of difference between driver assist and self driving), the corporations (Tesla) and governments go for the expensive option once again; only the wealthy can drive in the end (I.e cars), when they are mandated to be computerised self driving vehicles, while rail vehicles are simply guided by permanent way rail (also easier to make trains self-driving than cars).

  • @kryts27

    Governments not spending money on regional transport period. Long distance trains across Australia ought to be all electric trains. It's just the governments not spending money on electrical transmission lines conversion, not spending money on new rolling stock and locomotives, and especially not spending money on engineering works such as new railway lines, bridges, tunnels and viaducts. They rather spend money on new freeways which are much less safe than rail travel, for the average passenger, and produce tons and tons more carbon dioxide emissions.

    The most impressive thing about Amtrak is that it was never expected to succeed-it was designed to fail, and was basically set up as a euthanasia program. The fact that it has now survived 50 years of political hostility is incredible. With the newest plans, Amtrak is setting up for a system with better economies of scale and connectivity, as well as linking more destinations and thereby achieving more widespread political support. One of the main reasons that politicians are able to oppose it is because it does not directly benefit their constituents. With a more widespread network, more people will be affected by funding cuts, which in turn will hopefully set up a virtuous cycle of investment. Also-I can't seem to identify the location at 19:42-19:48. Could somebody please help me with this?

    This video is certainly interesting - I definitely agree with your statements regarding station facilities and their need for upgrading (although that has been somewhat fixed since this video was released), but your ideas with the Grange line seem to me to not be the best of choices - I would say the requirement to transfer between lines would mean a dip in already low patronage numbers, which would only be able to be rectified with increased capacity, which you have denied the option. I would propose the Grange line service's operating sphere, but increasing the frequency by the 'Belair' method - including a passing loop or two (might I suggest at Albert Park station) and/or the increase of the double track out of Woodville. 4000s operating the line at electrification would also increase capacity from the 2-car 3000 sets.
