I use to drive the Adelaide metro buses and i agree with most of this video. Fares are only cheap if you are making long journeys. You can not beat paying $3.95 to go from Mt Barker to the CBD. My car wouldn't even get to Stirling for that money. Also you can buy 14day passes. These passes are unlimited and will avoid it much of the problems mentions this. You should only be paying induvial fares if you use the network casually. I hope this help and be nice to the bus driver :P

Brisbane is actually the third most expensive city in the world for public transport. And we boast 14 ZONES! Fares actively discourage usage here in Brisbane. And the only cap is 9 and one half price. No daily tickets at all.

    Peak Kippa Ring-Springfield Central-$6.28-70km

The only good thing I've found about Adelaide's public transport system is you can get around using a Concession (green) metro card even though you're not on Centrelink payments and nobody ever checks your status.
I've been riding Belair trains for the last few years on my days off work and only once have I encountered Transit staff asking to see my Metro Card.
In Melbourne you just would not get away with that. Mind you the fact that Adelaide's trains and Buses are so slow and unreliable means you shouldn't have to pay much to use them.

I've always thought why other states made PT cards so much more confusing by needing to "tap-off" when I visited Melb and Brissy and Syd, but after explaining the benefits/reasons why it's done... It makes a lot more sense now xD
I do wonder how this will affect the ~20% revenue (of the total budget?) that comes in to fund our PT, if it'll increase or decrease it too.

A majority of Adelaide's train stations are a left to be desired. Some major train stations in Adelaide desperately need major renovations while some stations that are too close simply need to be removed.
In constrast, the newer train stations in Perth especially on the Joondalup (North) and Mandurah (South) lines have wide platforms, good lighting, restrooms, escalators, lifts and turnstiles and ticket machines at the stations entrance. There's even a pedestrian walkway (newer stations) above the railway tracks in Perth to eliminate the dangerous level crossings. Melbourne, Sydney, Perth and Brisbane are well ahead of the required facilities in their train stations unlike Adelaide.
There's no reasons why Adelaide train stations can't be updated to much safer modern standards with adequate facilities. Unfortunately, we have short minded politicians who have vested interests with the car/ motoring lobby and the automotive industries. $10 billion is spent on a South Road 10.5 km freeway tunnel (see links below) while there're ongoing cost blowouts with the Darlington interchange.
      dit.sa.gov.au/nsc/torrens_to_darlington
      amp.abc.net.au/article/12781804
Freeways and ongoing road upgrades are not cheap either, but the South Australian politicians have a piority with roads and not public transport. Cars and other motor vehicles need services servos, roadside assistance, insurance, police, emergency services, mechanics, parking spaces and etc. All the infrastructure, serivces and maintenance of roads services required for mostly single occupant cars and other road vehicles are heavily subsided by the taxpayer (see links below).
      www.ptua.org.au/myths/balanced/
      www.ptua.org.au/myths/petroltax/
When public transport are correctly established with an integrated frequent multimodal network, strong land use plans and reasonable average occupancy (30% or more), then public transport can move people more efficiently and cheaply than most cars ever will. Mathematically, a grid network of frequent public transport lines (see video link below) with convenient interchanges are generally simplest and cheapest networks to operate and maintain.
      m.ruclips.net/video/6QYpXk8dzvQ/видео.html (In Barcelona, Spain)
m.ruclips.net/video/efieDRKyXJE/видео.html (Public transport is not the silver bullet)
Cycling, micromobility vehicles, ride sharing and on-demand small buses can supplement and solve the first and last mile of faster public transport systems (stations 1 - 5 km apart) especially for long distance trips.

@@michaeleverett1479 Agreed with 99% of what you've mentioned. I think there is potential with Adelaide's metro train network and yes I have heard that Perth's train network although minimal is excellent. I personally would have extended the Tonsley line to Aberfoyle Park.
I would replace the O Bahn route with rail lines and run trains to Greenwith or even further depending on demand.
I was using buses to get to work from Morphettville to Keswick however now living in Firle there is no bus which travels near Keswick so I am forced to use my car, after enduring Greenhill rd traffic at 6.30am I am completely stressed by the time I've arrived at work so I'm all for Public Transport.
Why anyone would want to drive on Adelaide's roads day in day out is beyond me, some of them resemble goat tracks.

    • @michaeleverett1479
      @michaeleverett1479 3 года назад +1

@@jacintaedwards1123, Agreed, Perth has the best train network for an Australian city as the network is frequent, simple, legible and connections with safe and fully integrated bus/ train interchanges. Sydney's train network especially with its double decker trains in constrast are an extremely complicated mess with various stopping patterns, train line branching and generally horrible frequencies throughout (except for the City Circle). Sydney Trains and Sydney Metro are extremely overrated and should never be used as a models to improving Adelaide's public transport.
Adelaide is so similar to Perth in so many ways, yet Adelaide's public transport is far worse than Perth's. Public transport in Perth was in a far more neglected state than Adelaide, now Perth's PT is reasonably workable even though it's not perfect. Adelaide's PT in constrast is totally unworkable due to its horrendous and highly complicated hub and spoke bus network in mostly mixed traffic.

The problem with no tap off means you have to not tap on in the free tram zone and mind where you get off, which also isn't super clear so when I visited I copped a few unnecessary fees. Compared to Melbourne's free tram zone, where you can tap on and off the trams if you can't be bothered to work out the system (which in fairness is pretty annoying too) and it will just work out if you got on and off within the free tram zone and charge nothing.

    Nice video.
    As a Sydney sider.
Its a bit like Melbourne. An expensive smart card that can do all sorts of smart things, but then make it essentially a single zone system, without caps etc.. and separate quarterly/monthly/daily products.
I agree with the comments on peak/off-peak fares, Sat fares, and why a day cap can't equal the alternative ticket.
But disagree with the lack of zones. The alternative (a car or taxi) you pay by the km, and there are real costs in PT in distance.
Particularly in a city like Adelaide with cheaper city parking, it just encourages those living closer in to drive, which is not optimal for anyone.

Tbh I feel like the tap-on only system would be much less of a problem if they just fixed the Adelaide station fare gate issue. Metro Tas' greencard uses the same set-up (and coincidentally used to use the same paper tickets) and is fine bc it a) has daily capping and b) doesn't bother with peak/off-peak fares (tho sadly it does have fare zones)

As of Jan 2022 Perth Punlic Transport fares will be capped at 2 zones max or $4.40 standard or $3.90 smartrider. This has been taken to encourage more people to use public transport. So for example a normally 9 zone $13.10 trip from Mandurah in the south is only going to be 2 zone.

Another gripe with Adelaide transport is the line to Seaford and back. I went via the new electric train to meet friends at the pub there. I got back late to the station but got the last train back...I thought the Gawler train could wait a couple of minutes so I could walk to the other platform. As it was I was lucky to get a bus to Mawson lakes, and then a te axi from there to home, as the last 228 bus had gone already. I know they don't have to cater for just one person, but two minutes wait wouldn't hurt. And train timetables are pathetic on the weekends, finishing at midnight, when most party goers are still going well past midnight...buses are the same, Adelaide transport dies on that point too.
If they make public transport more attractive on weekends, more people would use it. Narrow minds persist in government circles.

I know you say the fairs are quite cheap, but I still think it's dumb how much it costs. I mean, I live in Brisbane though. If I want to go between Brisbane and the Gold Coast it costs $10 one way! And from my place to the airport? $20! I live so close that it's cheaper to catch an uber there. I also live walking distance to the CBD but have to pay $3.40 if I decide to catch the bus to work. Again, if I car pull with just 1 other person then it's cheaper to catch an uber into the city.

This is a nice video. I agree with the fare cap point, and agree to some extent about tapping off (although I think there is benefit to the simplicity of tapping on only). The data from seeing where people alight will be beneficial.
As for fare timing, there are no “peak” and “interpeak” fares. There are “all times” and “off peak”. It is designed to entice people to travel outside of peak, rather than punish people for travelling at peak. Agreed that Saturdays should be “off peak”, and after 7pm on weeknights too. But there should be no incentive offered for more people to travel at peak hours.
    Looking forward to new videos
