HOW TO: Clean Red Cedar Clapboard with Oxygen Bleach
As a fellow Small Business Owner on Cape Cod (different line of work) I find it frustrating with the over saturated amount of companies I compete with that are under bidding us by a significant margin do to the use of lower cost of labor because of possible illegal immigrants I’m interested to see if any immigration reforms that result in less work force if we’ll be able to get back to “normal “ Because as you put it about the factory scenario I do feel like I lost my job to someone who is here illegally and taking my jobs Thanks for the great cleaning videos
I’m glad to hear your phone is ringing off the hook. Legal or not, good help is hard to find. Keep up the great work 🇺🇸
It's not off the hook THIS time of year... so it was odd to get calls about possible big-volume referrals. Hope you're well.
Props and respect to both you guys.
Hard to find laborers here in VT that want to do this work. I’m busy here but would move to Cape Cod to take on more work especially if the market is better.
And that's the catch: if I didn't already live here, there's 0% that I could afford to move here... even now that I have a well-established business. Between the soaring home prices and the increased interest rates, I couldn't afford the tiny little house now in 2025 that I bought back in 2010... and I definitely couldn't afford to rent an apartment. It's a wicked cycle and I understand why I see cleaners from Rhode Island and New Hampshire... but then I'm the one the homeowner calls to fix a problem when the guy from off-Cape won't make a 6-8 hours round trip to come fix a spot on the roof that they missed. Thanks for watching.
@ same deal here. Getting calls all the time because the home owner hired a weekend warrior or someone who moved away because they can’t afford to live here anymore.
They aren’t going to get deported. Politicians lie. Those companies will do fine especially in mass
No comment. We are so over saturated that we can’t get out of our driveway to get to work. 10 minute drive have become a 4 hour drive. Forget about 15 minute city’s, looks like it’s going to be a 1 minute city. 😆😳
Oversaturated with immigrants? I don't know the term "15-minute city." I'm curious to hear about the immigration situation down under, especially as it relates to job openings and the economy.
@ Well my friend, For some reason we are owned by America and under the stock exchange on Wall Street. We were sold to the highest bidder which is currently bill gates and his ku. We have plenty of land and resources but Mr gates wants it all to him self and that’s why everything is being squeezed in one area. India and China are overpopulated and sort help from Mr. Gates to reduce the population. Before Mr gates, White man came and made this land into a prison, but it’s a prison that I love. Mr gates and his Ku Klux Klan turned it into his personal experimental lab. In regards to 15 minute city’s, Do the math. How would you contain freedom and be a god. 😟 but life goes on and hope that people wake up to the ku that are running the show.
Thanks for sharing your very real perceptive as a small business owner on this complicated issue. Love your videos.
Thanks Debbie
This gave me flashbacks to 2020, we needed doctors and nurses, and I know many who disagreed with the projected solution. (I'm avoiding hot terminology here) They were still willing to do their job. But they were threatened, kicked out, and ridiculed. No or less doctors seemed a better option with the growing pandemic. Seems like you said, healthcare is another broken issue, that has in someway benefited both political parties. Vital jobs that aren't filled because of a purge.
A big topic for a small comment area. #1 Americans get jobs first in America then legal immigrants.I have legal immigrants in my extended family and they are pissed about illegals getting benefits. #2 Illegals are taking more than they return in all forms of capital. #3 We're getting squeezed in different ways by both political parties. #4 We do need immigration. I haven't talked to anyone who is apposed to legal immigration.
Thanks for watching and for your comments.
It's a rough concept and not one that can easily be understood. Why is it difficult to understand? Missing information and mis-information. We don't know what lies beneath the surface.
So many angles. As I understand it, though, the current system or path to legal immigration into the U.S. is basically an outdated and underfunded tangle of bureaucracies. I've can't believe that this is the best America can do.
Any copper coin, tucked partially under the roof tile, every eight feet down the pitch of the roof both clears and keeps the roof moss free. Personal experience of my very heavily mossed roof, copper ions are toxic to moss. A quick spray with copper sulphate also will kill everything directly, it will weather and wash the growth away and be completely moss free in about a month, but needs to be reapplied annually depending upon the roof substrate absorbing some of the copper solution.
@@yp77738yp77739 copper is far superior for this purpose than zinc. Copper has much stronger antimicrobial properties, but it is also far more toxic to any life down stream of it. It’s also far, far more expensive than zinc… which is probably why I see these stupid zinc strips being applied and not copper.
@ I’m not sure about toxicity. I know that in forestry they use CuSO4 to control moss and algae on tree bark and many countries still use copper pipes for potable water distribution in domestic and commercial buildings, so I guess it can’t be too bad. But lead was also used in water pipes and that is toxic, my guess is that it linked to the amount of acidity in the water and the inert metal oxide layer, I should know, I’m a toxicologist.
Why not just use sodium percarbonate, it's alot cheaper
@@tonybersano2428 Thanks for your question and thanks for watching. Agreed that sodium percarbonate is cheaper. I illustrated this job with hydrogen peroxide for 2 main reasons: 1) Many viewers are homeowners who only have a pump sprayer for application, and therefore have a difficult time applying sodium percarbonate solution because it often doesn't entirely dissolve, clogs up the pump sprayer nozzle, etc. Hydrogen peroxide doesn't have that trouble with a pump sprayer. 2) The exterior cleaners who watch this channel are mostly set up with a typical downstream injectors for sodium hypo application. Sodium percarbonate solution can't be effectively downstreamed... but hydrogen peroxide can. Lastly, as I mentioned somewhere, sodium percarbonate *seems* to dry out my skin a lot more than hydrogen peroxide does. When I'm going to be "bathing in it" as in this overhead job, and the quantity of either is small, I prefer hydrogen peroxide.
I just finished refinishing a deck. I tried stripping this deck with some really nasty butyl boost hydroxide and meta mix. To get the paint off. Even my nice carbon filters and full face respirator I can still smell the chems. It didn’t even get all the paint off. So I sanded the whole thing for like 60 hours or something. Removed every spec and installed some “stain and seal experts” sealer it doesn’t seem to even have solvents in it to thin the oil, it’s like it’s just mineral oil and pigments. It soaks in allot deeper / better than cabbot, Sherwin Williams, bear, or anything else iv come across/used. Customers are happy they got the color they were looking for. But after I dumped like nearly 100hrs or who knows maybe more into that deck if we count travel time, prep time, cleaning, staining and so on. I was like “but it’s still gonna get dirty. Will the stain even last here under this tree?” idk but after that project I had allot of questions. And this video has been so informative and shed allot of light. Definitely gonna grab some of this sauce. Iv got lots of people who’d prefer not to stain but want to maintain their wood. Thanks for the uploads sir.
@@backspace12399 yep. Been through all the same out here. I’m completely convinced that “keeping it bare and keeping it clean” is the right solution for more than 90% of homeowners. Give Kristian a call, he’ll help you out. Phone number in description. Thanks for watching
Can I use a normal pump sprayer for the hydrogen peroxide? Followed by a low pressure wash?
Yes 👍🏼
1. What happen to your tongs? 2. Do you have any great ideas for catching rats?🤔
1) I forgot them 2) cats ?
I started using bleach on mine and did about half of my job then came across this video. Happened to have a brand new Krud Kutter bottle that I bought to clean the oven and it worked just as good as the bleach. The pressure washer got most of it off. I did have to pass a quick towel behind it to get a few spots but cut the time and muscle work by more than half.
Nice work 👍🏼
Great information, thank you! I’ve got a project I’m washing with some stained wood. The wood is stained but is either not sealed or the seal is failing. The wood is tongue and groove on the ceiling with white painted rafters that have black dirt similar to this with wood beams below with the same type of stain/sealer. Customer mail t wants the white rafters cleaned but if we can clean the wood as well that would be a bonus. Any tips on your process for this pricey would be greatly appreciated!
Sodium metasilicate is pretty alkaline so you’ll want to use a very mild concentration if doing bare/old-stained wood. My recco is to try a small sample spot on a discrete area - and then see how it looks dry - before committing to the whole thing. Those situations are almost always trial and error, because of the unknowable details of the deteriorated stain…
Hey. I'm an old guy with the badminton racquet and I approve this method. I'm not into it as much for the sport as I am to prevent the destruction. Great idea! Thanks.

Great video. Do you know if this is also an acceptable method for Eastern White Cedar? Thanks
Eastern white is generally more difficult to clean because it tends to be softer than western red cedar. It’s more prone to furring up. That aside, yes, this is an acceptable method for eastern white cedar.

Interesting topic. We all have to believe in something. And as they say the more we tell ourselves these beliefs the more it becomes the truth. I agree, maintenance is very important. Unfortunately the more things you own the more time doing maintenance. I own a 20 year old BMW, and I spend a fair amount of time doing maintenance on it. What I find comical, is a guy clearly overweight or in poor health, spending an inordinate amount of time maintaining things, like a spotless vehicle, but not the most important thing of all, his health.
"Comical".. and sad! Thanks for watching
It's really interesting the number of people who don't practice good maintenance on investments.

Bleach won’t work?
I read an article that stated oxalic acid can react with alkalaine cleaners whoch can cause adhesion issues. Same wirh the acid itself if not properly rinse is this true? Also, what psi are you using for the pressure whasher. Thank you
Anything at all will cause adhesion issues: dust, dirt, mold, and yes, cleaners or acids which are not thoroughly rinsed. So rinse like hell after washing or brightening and before applying any sort of stain or sealant. I don’t use a pressure gauge so I can’t say what PSI I use. ** DONT TRY THIS AT HOME: it stings my hand from 6 inches but doesn’t injury me. Lol Yep I used to do that too! Thanks for watching.
That’s a product of laziness.
Around here I see lots of stuff like this which I think only gets addressed when the house goes up for sale again... the inspector notes things, the buyer makes the changes a condition of the sale, and the seller then deals with it. But until a house goes for sale, sub-optimal conditions just stay as they are.
Yep….definitely dangerous
Hope nobody finds out the hard way

What would happen if you didn't rinse of the Oxalic Acid?
ruclips.net/video/-9NMt42il4Q/видео.html
Every authority tells us to rinse, and leaving a deck covered with acid which burns out skin seems like an obviously bad idea, so I always rinse. I've never NOT rinsed to see what happens. Based on research, what COULD happen: 1) leaving it on the wood could alter its pH over time. This might affect the wood's stability, making it more prone to damage or discoloration. 2) as oxalic acid dries, it can leave behind visible white crystalline residues (oxalate salts) on the wood surface. These residues can mar the natural beauty of the mahogany and interfere with subsequent finishes or sealers. 3) Without rinsing, the oxalic acid might not neutralize evenly, leading to blotchy or uneven coloring on the wood surface. This would detract from the uniform appearance of the deck. 4) any finish applied over un-rinsed oxalic acid may fail to adhere properly or could react chemically, leading to peeling, discoloration, or premature degradation of the finish.
@@OutsideCleaners Thanks Nate, really enjoy the videos!
