I'm a completely self-taught sewist and an amateur at everything.
I love historically inspired fashion and making clothing that fits my body and life rather than trying to mold myself into the latest fashion. Some of my projects are self-drafted or pattern-hacked, but I occasionally follow the patterns of other designers. Along the way, I share my process and show new skills I'm learning.
Sometimes you'll also see cats, gardening, kitchen-ing, and travel on this channel as well.

Hello friends, It's Ren Faire season, so I'm back with a costuming video, but for my husband. This year, I'm piecing my costume together from things I already have, but his I'm making by digging into my fabric stash. The shirt pattern is the Breeze, mens/straight fit from Twig and Tale. Making a Shirring-Effect Summer Dress without Elastic Thread
Просмотров 8693 месяца назад
Shirring is controversial, but it helps to make clothes more adaptive and I think it can be done in a really attractive way! Join me as I develop a comfortable and sturdy shirring-effect technique using recycled elastic for this summer dress! I used about 4 yards of a linen/cotton blend fabric, 9 total short elastic pieces, and a ton of white cotton thread. The base bodice patterns I adapted ar...

Looking for the Perfect Pear-Shaped Pants: Part 1, Fernway Culottes and Arenite Pants
Просмотров 5775 месяцев назад
If you have a very curvy body shape, you probably struggle with a lot of off-the-rack clothes. I'm very pear-shaped, so my hips are much bigger than my waist and to be honest, I'm really disappointed by brands' "curve" fit lines having only up to 10 inches of difference between waist and hips. So, in this video I tried to make my own pants using two patterns. First, the Fernway Culottes by Twig...

While I was able to use some of the materials I already had on hand, I estimate most people with craft chains in their neighborhood should be able to make a similar project for about $7 USD. Making a Mushroom Corset While Attempting to Grow Mushrooms at Home
I recently finished civilization of the Middle ages and I will never forget that for a typical peasant clothing was the most expensive purchase they would make. If you had two set of clothes you were well off.
I sure know that feeling of being interrupted! 😂
It's a very loving kind of interruption though ♥️
I finally have the courage to make some for the kids and I. With coton canvas and zip ties from the hardware store
That's all I started with! I've made several pairs since this and have continued refining the fit and shaping, but I still almost always use hardware store zip ties
When it comes to flaws in things generally we are much more critical of our things than we ever would be of someone else's. Ask yourself what you'd tell another person if they had made it. Go from there. It's totally good.
Sometimes I just wish I consistently had that super clean finish on all my pieces. When I do achieve it I feel really proud, you know?
I have loved watching your storytellers projects! I think it's such a cool idea they're doing. Beautiful dress, definitely add more purple to the wardrobe!! I also am very inspired by a wintry chemise a la reine/drawstring dress.
Definitely follow Twig and Tale on IG-- they've been sharing all the great Storytellers-- so many talented folks. Early next year they'll also open applications if you want to apply to join the community for 2025!
Done is better then perfect. I would not redo the channels. The dress looks good.
Yeah, I think once I get all the chalk pen out it will stop drawing attention to the little errors and I'll feel much better about it
It's beautiful. That colour is very nice . I love the double cinched waist , it's very flattering too. I have the driftwood pattern , I know I'd like the neckline to be very modest for me too. The ruffle at the bottom looks darling. Is the linen rayon blend a soft , non scratchy blend ? It look comfortable and warm . I need to learn how to alter patterns for myself too. Thank you for sharing lovely ❤❤
This is a slightly heavier fabric that's not super soft initially, but softens up nicely within a few washes. I feel like this has become my seen sweet spot: taking pre-existing patterns and playing to see how I can use them as the base of something a bit different
The dress came out so cute!! I hope it is in fact as comfy and cozy as it looks! :D I couldn't see the stitch lines being uneven at all! Though, admittedly, during the time you talked about it I was getting yelled at by a cat (she insists she needs to sit on my arms, which are busy!) so I couldn't look especially closely!
Thanks! I think added adjustability always makes someone extra comfy. I'm trying to embrace the "3 feet" rule: if someone wouldn't notice it from three feet away, you probably don't need to stress about it!
I love the color!
Loved this so much.❤
i’m convinced i can do this before halloween
I think you made some wonderful purchases. Thanks for sharing your haul
Thank you I tried to be practical, but still have a wee bit of fun
I like souvenir earrings or pendants, I mostly go for small easily carried things. One year at the Ohio Ren Festival I bought a painting of king Arthur, it was around 2'x3'. I was lucky that I was able to pick it up on my way out. The hard part was remembering where the booth was. It was my first time there.
Yes, I appreciate it when merchants let you pick things up later. It makes it so much easier!
Lovely to see what you bought xx I sew/ hand craft heaps of items that I would love to sell at a renaisance fair, but I live in the deep south of New Zealand, and there are NO events ever. Also, just positively intended feedback, the sound quality was terrible, it was very hard to stay with you and listen.
These events are getting popular, so you never know when one might spring up! I don't have a secondary mic, so I was relying on camera audio. I do plan on getting a lav mic eventually, but little by little since I don't earn much from making videos... When I do, it typically goes straight to buying fabric 🤭
Welcome to RPGs! And the secondary hobby of dice collection :)
I honestly think he just agreed to the game so he could collect dice... 👀
Thanks for showing your purchasing ! Hope we can get a review of the tea and soap bar also :) Got my eyes on your baskets and bagpack 😏 ! I mean the color 🤩
I'll definitely let you know how everything is! And yes, that green backpack is so beautiful... I couldn't leave it behind!
That is wonderful. The sleeves are perfect!
Thank you! I think I may try a similar sleeve on a dress in the future
the flowers are a very nice touch
I'm trying to add more embroidery into projects because it can be such a unique detail
You've done a beautiful job on that blouse . Very feminine and the embroidery really finished it nicely. Thank you for your videos , new sub here ❤❤
Thank you so much and welcome!
I love that color! Just a tip for anyone reading this: when cutting something out from a pillowcase, you will get much less shifting of the fabric if you iron it first. The sewn together sides seem to pull the fabric in weird directions when cutting it out.
Yes! That's why I pinned the two layers together before cutting. I didn't talk about it in VO, but I find even if you iron it (which I didn't in this case 😅) pinning is still really helpful if it's stitched together.
Good job. And I see what you mean with the darts.
i dont tend to comment often bc Shy, but omg this blouse is adorable!! that color is so pretty on you!!
Aw, well thank you so much for the lovely compliment ♥️
I've watched this every fall since you posted :) it's such a good way to jumpstart my autumn brain and inspire my wardrobe!
That's so nice to read!
Go hard or stay home!
Cozy chill vibes and pajamas encouraged!
Thank you! I feel like most vloggers are always dressed up when filming, but that just doesn't work for my schedule all the time You are seeing me in off-hours hobby mode!
You’re outfit looks great and I like your hair like that too.
Haha thanks I'm figuring out if I want to tie it up or have it under a scarf to finish off the costume
@@OdessaDenby oooh a scarf would be so cute
That looks amazing!
Thank you! I'm really pleased with how it turned out
Patreon has a new feature that allows you to add a pay to unlock feature for certain posts. So if you don't want to commit to a monthly subscription, but just get certain content, you can. It was my intention to set up a $1 fee for the PDF pattern pieces of this project so you could use them for reference, but apparently $3 is the minimum Patreon will allow you to charge (plus fees from the app, coming out to about $4.50 USD). My lowest Patreon tier (all tiers get all benefits) is $3, so it seemed silly to charge more for a single post. I hope you understand. If you want the pattern and other extra content, consider becoming a $3 patron for one month.
This looks really comfy....I'm thinking under my full skirt summer frocks 😊
If we have serious illness it is natural for our bodies to prioritize healing first before going on to burn off spare fat. Hang in there!
Very helpful thanks 🥻👗 🍻🍺 🔮🔮🔮
Looks beautiful
Ok, but my first question just by the thumbnail is : how come do you have such cool fabrics?? Between that and your cool projects I think I should stop bingewatching, I already have enough fabric and projects to do 😂
Haha, well I source from a lot of places. I love to use bedding (and sometimes curtains) sourced from the thrift store and IKEA as-is, small local fiber shops, and the silk for the vest I found at a random booth at an outdoor market. Sometimes I order online as well, especially my linen fabrics. I wish the best in getting through your WIPs!
@@OdessaDenby Thank you, I guess I just really love your style ^^
This gore adjustement is very clever, I too would not wear the only bows version and do not add clothes in my wardrobe that don't see myself wearing regularly (but I don't care if it's costumey for others 😅). Also love love the wiliam morris fabric, I've been wanting for a while a printed fabric that would have a medieval feel to it to make the lining with a peek of a huge hood and that might be just the one I need ^^
That would be so cute as a hood lining! I love the William Morris Victorian-cosplaying-medieval vibe so much
@@OdessaDenby To be honest it was not my idea : a girl in my music theory class 5 years ago had a hooded cape lined with a fabric that had this type of vibe. When I complimented her on it, she said she sewed it herself, and I've been wanting to make one like hers ever since. Now I know a few things about how to sew, enough for such a project, and I've found the perfect fabric thanks to you: definitely will order some and do that very soon 😀
@@melissel5648Capes are great beginner projects too! You don't even necessarily need a pattern (though, of course, there are some great ones out there!)
Oooh the Strawberry thief! I've got a teacup to wash away that I couldn't find any printed fabric in my area a few years ago - I got my mom a green, lilies patterned cup too 🌸🌸
Yes, I love that more William Morris fabrics are becoming available!
It looks amazing with the gores! Makes the black bows pop even more. I used to have a skirt that worked pretty much like this: two flat panels for front and back, and then very ample pleated gores on the sides, with the panels held together by side lacing. It was a staple of my wardrobe for years and years. Definitely recommend this kind of garment.
It's such a fun take on a simple rectangle skirt! Sounds like you got a lot of use out of yours
I love the William Morris Strawberry Thief fabric, and what a great idea to use it in this way. Love the result.
Thank you! I definitely have plans to sneak more of the fabric into my wardrobe in other subtle ways
Very pretty 😀
Try oven cleaner on your baked on pot. Shirt and vest looked good.
Just been given a box full of tartan fabric…..im beyond excited, then I came across your channel! 👏👏👏👏👏👏❤️
Hello Odessa, I was going to skip making a mock-up because I'm impatient and lazy but after watching your mock-up adjustments on your body, I was convinced I should not skip. I'm a new seamstress, so thank you for the encouragement.
Haha, I am often tempted to skip mockups too, but for really fitted things, it's so good to have that opportunity to make adjustments! Stays and corsets can especially be uncomfortable if they don't fit you like a glove.
Every since I started acting in an 18th century historical play (back in ‘05 😅) I’ve been in love with the style, but keep telling myself I’m not “cool” or thin enough to pull modernized versions of that style off in every day life. But I think I’m old enough now to just not care and go for it anyway. ❤
The coolest thing in the world is to not care about being cool lol A lot of historical styles look amazing on thicker bodies because they are designed to create a silhouette rather than just trying to make you disappear as much as possible. Working with my proportions and shape has been a game changer that makes me way more comfortable and happy. Enjoy your journey~
Gosh, I'm sewing a shirt+ vest combo for my friend (for LARP reasons) and I was lamenting on what if I make a reversible vest....Then I started to watch your video, so it's decided 😂
Excellent timing!
Wonderful. I tea stained a cotton shirt for my kiddo years ago when he was costuming as Shrek. It turned out perfectly off white. So much more ogre/pirate like. He makes a perfectly dandified pirate. You two will make a brilliant duo swashbuckling your way through a ren faire.
Thank you! I'm glad he's getting onto it and having fun now. I can definitely see how that would be perfect for a Shrek costume too!
yesss! take the STEM man to the ren fair!
He loves it! After his first visit he has been gradually persuaded to explore some costumes
Lovely silk 😍 a few years ago i made a dress out of saree silk, flatlined the bodice pieces + interfaced the edges of my tiers with regular cotton so it's sturdier. Thank you for the tea staining link -- I've always just assumed it was an imperfect process with inevitably unruly results 😅 I would add maybe some kind of wristwear for him maybe -- could be something cloth that could be soaked in water for hot renfaire weather. Also maybe some head wear -- a hat, kerchief or bandana. If he wears jewelry, that could be a good addition or if he doesn't, maybe there's some metallic embellishments on his accessories?
Definitely looking for a good hat or bandana! I don't know what happened to my old tricorn from back when I was active in the faire scene. At a previous faire we picked up a skeleton key on a cord that I think would be a good addition for him too...
It’s very trendy
I've seen that in the last few years, simple feminine dresses you can pull on over your head have been getting popular. This was my attempt at creating something with the features I like from those dresses without engaging in a fast fashion purchase.
