Friends! One of my source images did not show up in the upload of this video. At 11:10 this embroidered chausable from the MET's medieval collection was meant to appear onscreen: www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/466660 Sorry for the mishap, please enjoy browsing their lovely medieval collection.
I feel like an initially impressed and then disappointed medieval peasant everytime I try to buy a new piece of clothing! I grew up exclusively in hand me downs and thrifted clothes, and it spoiled me for life. I had never experienced a lot of the fabrics that doesn't survive that cycle of wear, wash and passing on to the next person. Like those hoodies with a kind of flossed inside?! I was blown away when I first tried one as an adult. I bought it immediately, it was so warm. What a magical fabric! After just a couple of hours of wear I started leaving linty trails eveywhere... by the second wash there was absolutely no floss left, and the hoodie looked really faded and wonky. Awful experience. So yes. I got spoiled by growing up poor!
Yes, sadly clothing manufacturing has been reducing in quality pretty significantly even just within the last decade or so. I've made the commitment to make or thrift pretty much everything in my wardrobe because I can't afford good quality small label and fast fashion is just not worth it for a multitude of reasons.
I recently finished civilization of the Middle ages and I will never forget that for a typical peasant clothing was the most expensive purchase they would make. If you had two set of clothes you were well off.
Absolutely... My brief stint when I was working in a clothing store in college taught me that people touch clothes and say, "ooooh so soft!" to a lot of acrylic material that ends up falling apart quickly. That was before I got vigilant about checking garment tags, but even I noticed that was the top criteria people would use to choose items.
Love this video, its interesting to know what medivel people would think of the modern times. Most of my clothing is from the thrift and vintage, I notice older vintage clothing tends to fit the body body. I would also love for you to do a video on what medieval people would think of modern beauty standards.
I agree. Other than things like tights, I only thrift and make any clothing I add to my wardrobe now. Haha, medieval Europeans would definitely find our obsession with sun tans and thigh gaps perplexing!
I think medieval people would be disgusted with modern fashion, it's lack of detail, lack of imagination, looking like underwear....and lack of texture....
It's kind of weird to me how the person has thought about those different aspect of clothing thinking to make a point... While in my eyes this details all the way medieval clothing was so much better 😅 Even the more color choices isn't worth the environnemental damage imo. There's definitely domains in which we've come a long way since the Middle Age and for which I'm at least mostly happy about the advancement. I can imagine Medieval people would be amazed by what is curable now, or what computers can do but I'm sorry when it comes to clothing theirs were just better than ours (comparing normal people's) and they would just be so disappointed overall
There is so much widely accessible discourse about the state of the clothing industry and how poor quality has become, so it kind of shocked me too. I didn't think people were still so widely misinformed. So, I guess this is my contribution to public education lol
I guess they're one of those people who think new is always better... Which is my biggest pet peeve view when it comes to history, only compared to the opposite one of modernity being necessarily worse. Thanks for contributing to a more nuanced viewpoint 😊

this is such a valuable video! It is definitely a pet peeve of mine when people praise the softness of unwashed plastic garments 😅
