I gave up on patterns, being lysdexic! Same with recipes! I've draped on myself my whole life. I've also sewn professionally for 40 years without patterns. :D
I can't really think of any of my projects that aren't chaotic in some way. Even the ones I make from a pattern get frankensteined and altered to be nearly unrecognizable to the original. If I do just follow a pattern, my fabric choice is chaotic lol. I feel like this entirely comes from being a cosplayer XD Literally right now I'm working on making a frog bag because that's what popped into my head when I saw green fur in my grandma's stash. I'd recently seen a 17th or 18th century fancy dress frog shaped clutch, but I've decided this is going to be my ren faire buddy and it's going to look like I stuffed it into my belt
I do feel like this is a cosplayer trait because often it's about going for a certain look by figuring things out and piecing stuff together rather than following a pattern or a historical technique. Yay for frog bag! That will be so fun 😊
@@OdessaDenby Exactly! I just made a sideless surcoat for my sca kit using 18th century wrapping gown construction techniques so it can be reversible. It's made out of wool and a cotton printed with manuscript cats licking their bums 😅
YES! i'm making a frog bag as well 😍 i'm using a colourful plaid wool-like fabric and i'm making it a backpack.. he will be my daily partner to go to work with in the colder months 😁✨
chaos sewing is my main sewing mode 😂 except when i make skirts, i found my favourite shape for sturdier fabrics and have been using that for a few skirts already
I definitely have a few go-to skirt and sleeve shapes that get funneled into many projects. I think that helps your wardrobe have a cohesive aesthetic!
This is pretty much exactly what I do when making almost everything I make from jewelry to painting to sewing or any other craft I decide to work on. I get inspired by something or an idea pops into my head. I grab the materials and just go for it! Ironicly enough, patterns intimidate me quite a bit. Your blouse turned out brilliantly and I love it!
I was so, so intimated by patterns when I first started sewing... I appreciate them now as tools that can sometimes be very useful and save me some math, but it is harder for me to look at a bunch of disparate paper pieces and understand how someone else designed them to come together. It's easier for me to follow the vision in my head and create the pieces as needed sometimes.
@@OdessaDenby Understanding patterns and in turn creating my own is definitely on my list of things to do during my journey of making my own clothing and other things that I love. I've only ever made things by sitting down and puzzling them out as I go (sort of free handing if you will). Using a pattern is so foreign to me but I know it will open up so many more creative avenues once I finally grab hold of how they work and how to use them! Fun enough, I'm nearly the complete opposite when it comes to crochet. I can read and understand crochet patterns with ease (whether it's the written type with just about every word abbreviated into just a few letters or even the picture type just showing the stitch type and placement). I have never even attempted to create a crochet piece from scratch.
I love chaos sewing, drafting my own stuff, and recently have dabbled into draping & enjoyed it. Your camisole turned out adorable!
Yes, it's fun to try new techniques that can give you a really customized look.
Thank you!
Ha! Apparently chaos sewing is the only kind of sewing I do 😂. I hate patterns.
I have found some patterns to be instructive... But some are quite a slog to use!
Chaos sewing is absolutely my favorite method, patterns just end up pissing me off🤷🏽♀️

Nice! I'm still a beginner in many ways, but I often enjoy draping and drafting for myself to get a better fit
this was wonderful! yes all the chaos!
Chaos sewing can be fun!! I like Frankensteining different patterns.
