Love your humour too 😁 always drew, and all kinds of things but little painted..have all the tools etc you mentioned..never knew about using Gesso as an overlay on top- excellent tip and (and even though I have the tools..I had not yet used them yet, or either have not used them in/ for my art..you’ve definitely have inspired me in the direction to do more painting in my array of art mediums. 😊. The Sketchbook Pro app that I installed on my ipad uses a diamond, rather than a triangle for value and saturation. (I believe they call Value something beginning with the letter L. Maybe lightness?) On the diamond, Value is up-down. Saturation is left-right. I'm just learning the software, so don't immediately see the CMY percentages, only RGB codes. If anyone knows how to display the CMY percentages, pls reply!! I believe the eyedropper tool is in the Premium Bundle, along with more brushes and other features. I paid a one-time fee of $1.99(US) for the bundle. The software is otherwise free. (No subscription!)

So I'm looking at the triangle inside the color wheel. * The bottom edge is tint (hue + white). * The right edge is shade (hue + black). * The right and bottom edges are like a value scale for the hue. Degree of saturation is the concept where I most struggle -- going from the bottom right corner (pure hue) towards the left edge. So I'm thinking the left edge represents 100% desaturated, with the edge being a grayscale. There is a lot to unpack in the triangle.

Thank you for the tips! The old school, New York school retro colors are not very toned down, I notice. De Kooning, Krasner, those types are in your face bright. But otherwise, these are great helps for color mixing, which is hard for us new painters.

Toon, this was an amazingly helpful video. The way you explained mixing the color made so much sense & took the fear of a mistake away.

I know I’m a bit late watching this one but thanks for explaining how you start a painting and your thought process throughout it. Sometimes trying to find a place to start is the hardest part.

Like you, as a young artist (many years ago), I struggled with getting the color I was after. It wasn't until I came across a book explaining color bias in artist paint that the missing piece to my puzzle was solved . OMG! I finally knew what was going wrong with my color mixing. The amazing thing I discovered is that most color mixing books and teachers make no mention of the fact that there is no paint that doesn't have a bias and the trouble you encounter mixing paint. Some of them even promote a palette consisting of maybe 5 colors that they claim you can create ANY color from! This video is the best explanation I have seen on the on this subject. Thank you.

Acrylics dries fast on your palette, and when you want it to stay wet for longer to blend. Otherwise, it takes its time to dry 😂
