  • You can make a vivid purple by mixing magenta and cyan (or phthalo blue), or colors that lie in between these two primaries. When you look for a less vivid purple, here are some options:
    • Add yellow (it's the third primary, and therefore it tones your mixture down).
    • Use one or two colors outside the range of the two primaries. For instance: pyrrole red (contains a little yellow) with cyan.
    • Use black, white or gray

When you say you are using “magenta” in your color mixing videos, are you using a pigment like quinacridone magenta or more of an alizarin crimson? I hope that these aren’t brand-specific names.

There are brands that just have 'magenta' in their line-up, otherwise 'quinacridone magenta' is a good choice. Alizarin crimson is a bit different, often it's slightly more to the red side. You'll be able to mix a slightly less vivid purple. For most vivid purples, quinacridone magenta or magenta work best.👍
