  • Welcome to our FINAL tutorial on how to mix paint, specifically mixing purple paint. You can achieve both soft and vibrant purple, as well as muted shadow tones, but there's a bit of a trick. Let's go!
    ➤ COLOUR MIXING PLAYLIST: • Mixing Green ACCURATEL...
    Hello and welcome to The Gold Coast Art School channel!
    I could have filmed this series a bit better. I've tried to talk about important colour theory, and show you what that looks like on the page. And here we are at PURPLE! And this is possibly one of the trickiest secondary colours to make. The reason has to do with the pigmentation within the tubes of paint, and how deeply saturated they are. Red and blue will make purple, yes, but you cannot achieve a VIBRANT purple from what comes out of the tubes.
    You need to introduce another colour to get there: Magenta.
    We're using acrylics paints for this (specifically Chromacryl brand, which simply says "warm" and "cool" on their bottles instead of named colours) but it's the same with oils and watercolours to an extent. Another colour you could consider using is "Quinacridone Pink" or "Permanent Rose" as opposed to something that simply says "Magenta". You will gain different shades and tones of purple depending on the brand, quality and colour you use. So if painting with purple is your bag, it's absolutely worth experimenting to find what you LOVE!

    Since 1995, we've been teaching creatives how to successfully paint and draw (even when they think they can't!) We have classes for beginners and intermediates, and welcome advanced artists too. Many of our students love coming to our school not only for the depth of knowledge our tutors bring to each session, but for our relaxed and welcoming community feel. Our adult art students usually use oil paints, but we encourage any medium, including acrylics, pastels and watercolours. I'm painting a photo as a present for my brother and I've been RIPPING my hair out trying to mix a very bright magenta, only to finally find someone who speaks the truth. I'll have to buy it in store😂 wish I didn't just spend 3 hours mixing every red and blue I have while Shouting "HOW IS THIS NOT WORKING" but thank you for your video!!😂👍

      So sorry you went through that pain! It's such a bugger of a colour to try and mix up sometimes. It's all to do with the pigments. But at least you found the reason for your troubles and I hope your brother loved his pressie 🙂 Jess

    Hello - thank you for this video. Who was the guy on Instagram that you saw give a tutorial on magenta / why the colour wheel is problematic please?

    • @GoldCoastArtSchool
      @GoldCoastArtSchool  10 месяцев назад

      Oh gosh, I can't even remember now... but, it's one of those funky things that isn't exactly common knowledge but has been known for many, many years. We teach the double-primary method of colour mixing, but it's not the only method out there! And while you can mix around 95% of colours using this method, there are some that are left out and you need additional colours such as magenta to create. Colour theory is pretty fascinating.

    I'm sorry but I still cant see the kinda purple i love come through.. .. however I'll take the magenta tip n go forth n mix with blue till I find that moment I see the magic purple colour just appear. Thanks so much for this x

      Sorry about that, what kind of purple are you after? If you're using oils and not acrylics, try using Quinacridone Rose. It's also a very special colour like Magenta is, and will give you much more vibrant purples and reds.

    Can we not mix the magenta?
    There HAS to be a way.
    I'm a purist wanting to start with only the primary colors!!! Lol

    • @GoldCoastArtSchool
      @GoldCoastArtSchool  10 месяцев назад

      We specifically teach the 2-primary method here at our school, so we very much think it's the way to go! But the fact is, you can't mix every single other colour with just that method. You will still get shades and tints of purple without magenta, but you won't get that vibrant, spicy purple. It's not a failure, it's just how colours react with each other.
