MAK 90 telescope vs OLYMPUS 300mm f4 - Moon Photoshoot
Great video! What gloves were you using?
the way you point the laser is the other way the camera points !
the insane price difference itotally outweigh the Olympus 300mm "weaknesses"..
Hi, I'm pretty much a one-eyed Olympus/OM shooter. The 300mm f4 is razor sharp. You cannot beat it.
Good video
U should try the 150-600 F4.0-5.6 b4 u commit to to the fixed tele lens. It’s GGGGGRRRRRATE!!!!!!
You can see a rather large difference in the noise. Not that that is the be all end all. But it really shows up in the owl pics. That is just ff vs M43. The difference was the cameras. The Canon is worth the money. But the m43 is a great 90% of the population solution. It has it's place.
Never be sorry about expressing emotion! As men, we tend to do that too often.
I'm headed out your way soon. I'd thought about climbing a mountain and doing some nighttime observing; you've convinced me not to even try it this winter. You've also got me convinced to do these as day hikes/base camp hikes before trying to do them at night--the astro stuff really adds a new layer of complexity. And hopefully you had lots of hot chocolate back in your jeep!!
I have both, (actually the Sony 600f43 GM). The OM 300 is a compelling weapon for mobility and enjoyment.
Hi Alex, what is your code for purchasing the Nomad.
The 150-400mm f/4.5 doesn't make much sense; it's about €2000 overpriced for what it offers. The 150-600mm is a better value, and if not, Sony full-frame might be the way to go. You could get the A7R V, Sony 150-600mm, and a 2x teleconverter for less than the 150-400mm f/4.5. It’s significantly overpriced. However, the OM-1 MK II’s performance is closer to that of the Sony A9 III, which is also overpriced, making the MFT system more cost-effective- if you skip the 150-400mm f/4.5.
Definitely it was a great idea to compare these three lens but after using both the 1.4 and the 2x extenders for many years I can say the possible mistake was including the 2x in this comparison. It simply isn't great. The 40-150 2.8 by itself is an amazing lens. And also you can put that 1.4 on any of the lens you reviewed and the images will continue to be tack sharp. I keep a 1.4 pretty much married to a 300f4 and this is a ridiculously great setup for the cost and weight factors. I'm actually planning to buy another 1.4 to keep it with my 40-150 as I really love the range and sharpness that zoom offers even with that 1.4 attached with it.
Nice video 👍📸
I was asked by moveshootmove to look at the Nomad before they released it. I told them that the laser on the top left corner on the Nomad was going to be an issue once a camera was installed as the camera would block the laser and/or polar scope. It's a shame they didn't listen to the feedback I gave them.
My new nomads threads ar much more loose... Immediately when tightening it, it lifts the beam a lot upwards... :( So basically I have no idea if it is aligned. Sigh.
Thank you for the video, quite educational. If I have a 14mm lens can I do 2 min exposures with MSM? Does it produce good round stars?
Olympus 300F4 for me i am planning to get one for my EM1-X
Thanks, Alex!
Thank you 👍🏼 much appreciated
How close to the paper bag "target" are you when you perform the laser light calibration adjustment ? Thank You.
The true north is not ON the polar it's 2 times the closest star distance direction 10 or 11 O clock from the closest star the other side of Polaris ,I found out on Stellarium aiming the polar and changing the time you see the polar turning around this point, but as my tripod is not really good it's probably the first cause of trouble, and also it's not clear if we have to level the tripod
And the final take home message should be ‘the best camera setup is the one that you have in your hand!’ … Canon, Olympus OM, Nikon, Sony, Fuji, Leica, Hasselblad …
Man, this lens is amazing! I have just purchased a G9-II and Panasonic 100-400mm II, this 300 mm seems even better!
I’m about to go with the om1 mark 2 , and probably purchase the 300mm f4 . Been looking for months and months for a decent setup and I’m afraid canon is just too expensive. People are being bombarded with Nikon and canon and it seems the OM SYSTEM is a remarkable underrated system by my reckoning
Hi, can you do TL with the new msm nomad star tracker? If yes how do you synchronize it with dslr camera? I have Nikon z6 ii. Thanks for the suggestion.
Hi can you the TL same way with the new MSM Nomad tracker
And by the way, Celestron made, a loooong time ago, a commercial 35mm film camera called the Celestron-Williams Cold Camera, where the camera body was able to work with dry ice to cool the film itself below zero degrees Celsius and that would reverse some of the reciprocity failure, enabling longer exposures and capturing better astrophotography images.
If you can get your hands on a split prism focusing glass, to replace the standard focusing glass, then it will be helpful. D oyou know about such filter?
I am just a hobby photographer, and the 300 f4 is more than enough for me. Basically it lives in my car, and I can take it out hustle free on so many occasions. I like that alot. Just sling it over my shoulder for a small hike with the dogs, in any weather. It's fun to use.
Thanks for this video! Although i have another make, it is fairly similar to the one you are demonstrating. This was all very helpfull. Tanks big time. +1 subscriber!
USD13,000 is cheap.
As pros you would surely carry 2 camera bodies and easily switch between lenses?
This was very helpful! I have been using first the Olympus EM-1 Mark ii, and more recently the OM-1 with the 300mm F4 but wondering if I would gain by switching systems, specifically to the Sony A9 Mark ii because it seems to offer many of the advantages of the OM-1. I have also been disappointed with the image quality from the Zuiko 100-400 zoom lens, which is so inferior to the 300 F4 that I almost never use it. But I am reassured by your back-to-back test in the real world. The right focus for my daydreams is the Zuiko 150-400. Thanks again!
I suggest you get a better understanding of ISO with RAW files if you want to teach. ISO matters what you see on the screen in the field, but you are not altering what is captured.
that is incorrect. changing iso changes the voltages in capture. higher iso creates more noise.
@@tomingrassiaimages8776 There are only one or two voltage levels. The max volatage level on Sony high end is at either 320 or 640 ISO.
Might seem like a stupid question but when do you actually power on the Nomad?
Two excellent photographers, spot on comparison. Thank you Alex. For me the choice is simple. I wouldn’t have gotten any of those photos with the Cannon rig. I’m not lugging it around. And not paying $10,000 extra for it. I could take some really nice trips for that $$$. (As you mentioned in a different vid ). Heck, even the Oly 150-400 is $5.5k cheaper than the Cannon 600 f4 and it is infinitely more versatile. Cheers
The $13,000 bokeh is well worth it.
Keep in mind Canon has the 600 and 800 f/11’s if portability and daytime shooting are priority. The f/4 tele-primes are primarily for maximum bokeh (which is quite noticeable even in this video) and sunrise/sunset shooting, where the smaller lenses fall apart.
Another well done video Alex, thank you.
Just got the Nomad and your video is very helpful thanks! One question: when I put a V-mount on to the Nomad red plate (like you showed when shooting) it doesn’t seat all the way down. The set screw will make it secure but it is not flat. Will that make the alignment be off ? Thanks !
Color saturation looks better on the OM
I have a problem, I have a Sony a7iv and a 20mm 1.8 g lens. I saw in tutorials that they set the exposure time to even 2 or 3 minutes and there are no star trails. I set it to a minute or a minute and 20 seconds and the stars start to blur. I don't know where the problem is. I choose the polar star from the stellarium application, I have a phone mount for MSM.
EXCELLENT VIDEO!!! WAHOOO!!! I agree with you that the Canon 600mm f4.0 in some situations took better shots. Also like you, I think the that the Olympus 300mm f4.0 is a VERY CLOSE competitor! And it's so much more affordable. I have an OM Systems OM-1. However, I just upgraded to the Olympus 100-400mm f5.0-6.3 (from the Olympus 75-300mm f4.8-6.7). It is a better lens. It does not take as sharp a picture as the Olympus 300mm (or should I say that I to not take pictures as well...). A friend of mine has the Olympus 300mm paired to an OM-5. He takes outstanding pictures! At best, I am an eager amateur. I mainly shoot landscapes and plant portraits for nature scientists. I got into wildlife photography during the Covid shutdown years (I bought a backyard bird feeder....). Will I ever get the 300mm f4.0? Or the OM 150-600mm f5.0-6.3? I fear that the Olympus 150-400mm f4.5 is only a pipe dream.......for now! Cheers!
hi did you try to use a external sink cord to connect the camera to de MSM
z50 + z 400mm f4.5 look at the weight & reach
The 600 smoked it, and like other comments have stated, when the light gets less than ideal the 600 will continue to steam roll ahead. But for good light shots, it would be interesting to see how much the 300/4 could be enhanced with skillful use of AI tools like the Lens Blur feature to see if additional separation could be had and a closer match obtained. Of course the same could be applied to the 600/4 and again it would take the biscuit.
Hi mate I shot with the om1, 8mm and 17mm lens I wish to invest in a tracker. Which one would you recommend the nomad or sky watcher. I am asking because I would like to use my Olympus 40-150mm pro 2.8. I will be backpacking a with a rucksack. Your advice would be appreciated.
Honestly seems like a big oversight on the design. This unit was advertised as being more secure for attempting longer focal lengths, and while rotating your camera for wide angle setups for polar alignment might be fine, for longer focal lengths where I check alignment often, I’m worried by the time the weight is rotated back to center that the alignment would be off. Seems like the proper solution would be some sort of clamp bracket like the original MSM unit had to allow the placement of the polar scope in varying positions rather than being tied to the upper right corner. I hope to be able to purchase something if the sort in the future.
Nice video. Thanks for sharing and I agree with your assessment. Question. On one of the side by side owl pics at 7:25, what was the crop factor (100%, 200%, etc. on the processed image that show the canon sharper? Before the last image they look almost equal.
