I think for the birds you were close with the OM but the bigger animals the 600 was much better
That's fair
Is this more practical than a star adventurer for milky way and star trail shots? What all would I need to use this on my tripod?
I refused it when offered. I need zoom lenses and feel hobbled using primes, in general.
Zooms are nice
@@chasingluminance For me, they are indispensable. I do not use primes unless for specific predetermined circumstances. They cannot compete with zoom lenses in the real time.
get yourself a tri bahtinov mask
I thought that would be hard to see through a lens finder, but you're right
Will be attempting something similar soon for deep sky targets.
Great run through of the options, Alex. I’d full support the 6D as an entry move as the used prices are excellent and it’s such a simple, robust camera that feels bulletproof. Paired with the 14mm Samyang it’s a great way to start making images. 6Ds are still the workhorse of my nightscape outings and timelapses. They get abused, covered in dew, squished into impossible corners of my bag yet deliver every time - I love them.
I thought i ruined mine in Hawaii... nope, just died it out and it kept on kickin
Does the fotopro tripod take the peak design plate?
I think it's a standard arcaswiss. I'll ask though
@chasingluminance thanks mate
Looking forward to the review

That AI art is extremely bad. Don't do your channel a disservice by using that crap. There are two lenses growing out of those things.
I thought I was funny... but yeah
Man do they sell that ballhead as a standalone piece. That thing looks awesome. Might be worth getting the tripod just for that
Got this from the company - Please tell him that the ballhead doesn't sold separately. He can buy this tripod on our official store. www.fotoprogear.com/product/origin-plus-travel-tripod/
1.4 lets in 4x more light than 2.8
Yeah, i misspoke. I thought it was a 1.8 but it's a on 1.4, so you're right!
I love the Carbon Mach3 Tripods from Benro.
Welcome back Alex 🙂
Got to agree on the Canon 6D, teamed up with the Sigma 24mm f/1.4 and Samyang 14mm f/2.8 brilliant astro combination.
I miss that set up sometimes
Good video ,very informative,,,, finely,,, continue Alex💪
And I'm ready for my zoom duties tonight
Great to see some content again. I'll look forward to your upcoming videos. Yeah, your friend should get the 6D, if going with Canon. It won't have the AF capability that a mirrorless will have, but if he doesn't go nuts with extra lenses, he could pocket his savings and start building toward a mirrorless like a used R6 or R6ii (I've heard bad things about the R8 with overheating and having terrible battery performance, but I don't know from personal experience). Then, with the adapter, he can continue to use his EF lenses. At that point, he might even consider eventually sending his 6D in for astromodification, even for landscape astro - the southern hemisphere gives him some awesome targets for hydrogen alpha. An R7 would be another option if he eventually gets mirrorless, because it would give him that extra reach for wildlife, and I've seen some photographers using the speed booster adapters to give them near full frame composition when using a full frame lens. Instead of 1.6 zoom, you end up with 1.1 (I think). Not sure how well it works, but it's something to consider. The nice thing about mirrorless is than he wouldn't have to stay in the Canon ecosystem, because the EF lenses are adaptable to Sony and Nikon, if that's the way he wanted to go. So yeah, lots of options. If he starts out with 6D, he can build and go in a number of different ways, and continue to use the 6D. 12 years old and it's still rock solid.
I wish I didn't sell mine sometimes
I know it a big chunky lens. But Rf 85 mm 1.2. I have it and would like to try it for Astro. I don’t have a lot of experience what pros and cons with this lens
It's probably great... you would need a tracker to get good results with it. 85 is pretty long
@ thanks man
I really appreciate your review of the tripod, which I am about to purchase. However, I tried the VA-5X Fluid Video Head (with a different Sirui tripod that is came with, the Sirui L-324F Landscape Carbon Fiber Tripod - a little big and bulky for me) and sent it back. The tilt is fluid but the pan is just ordinary, with no dampening, merely adjustable friction. I needed something for very slow panning, and this is NOT a true fluid head!
Good point
Canon 6d
You aren't wrong
Finely
My nomad laser has 2x grub screws and a larger brass screw. Is it all 3 need adjusting? If not what is the larger brass screw. Thanks.
If somebody already have the move shoot move older version is it much beneficial to upgrade to Nomad ? Hows the accuracy with mid telephoto?
It is a good bit more secure because of the geared rotational plate. OG msm is solid, nomad is noticeably better
No one Talks about the animal.....
?
There is a huge difference in background blur which makes the 600 the obvious winner. Not to mention the fine details, contrast, colors. Pretty hard to beat a fast prime supertelly.
It is better... but worth it?
How much slop is there when you attach that laser adaptor to the scope? does it perfectly align with the scope center or does it vary depending on that set screw? If the scope and the laser combo are not perfectly centered, the laser pointer could be way off when pointing at Polaris.
My answer is.... it works well enough for me. It's better than the older msm set up
Looking for a tracker to do some nebulae and maybe some Milky Way stuff here and there. All with a dslr. In Australia the SWSA2 and nomad are the same price. Do you think the nomad could handle a 135mm rokinon?
It handled my 200mm canon
I don't care for the blue cast.
Understandable
Is that a Moon bazooka in your pocket? or you bought the Olympus. Whilst the OM-1 and OM-1 Mark 2 do have the same sensor, the image treatment of the Mark 2 seems better implemented, especially in low light; it's not something that could have been done with a firmware update.
I do really like the mk2
Many Blessing upon you for your quick and easy to follow tutorial
You're welcome 😊
GREAT tutorial! Question. What am I reading about the z mount?
I'm not sure... what are you reading?
If I had all the money including enough to hire a Sherpa to carry my lens everywhere I went, I would go with the 600 full frame. It was better in all shots. But for any sane armature the 300 f4 all day long. You not only save10k for the lens, you also save another 10g on chiropractor visits. What I would like to see is a comparison of the 300 f4 vs the oly 100-400, or 150-600.
Great video! What gloves were you using?
amzn.to/41wWBzc
the way you point the laser is the other way the camera points !
Depends on what you're photographing
the insane price difference itotally outweigh the Olympus 300mm "weaknesses"..
Agreed
Hi, I'm pretty much a one-eyed Olympus/OM shooter. The 300mm f4 is razor sharp. You cannot beat it.
I do love that lens
Good video
Thank you
U should try the 150-600 F4.0-5.6 b4 u commit to to the fixed tele lens. It’s GGGGGRRRRRATE!!!!!!
I hope I can get my hands on it
You can see a rather large difference in the noise. Not that that is the be all end all. But it really shows up in the owl pics. That is just ff vs M43. The difference was the cameras. The Canon is worth the money. But the m43 is a great 90% of the population solution. It has it's place.
Never be sorry about expressing emotion! As men, we tend to do that too often.
I'm headed out your way soon. I'd thought about climbing a mountain and doing some nighttime observing; you've convinced me not to even try it this winter. You've also got me convinced to do these as day hikes/base camp hikes before trying to do them at night--the astro stuff really adds a new layer of complexity. And hopefully you had lots of hot chocolate back in your jeep!!
I have both, (actually the Sony 600f43 GM). The OM 300 is a compelling weapon for mobility and enjoyment.
Hi Alex, what is your code for purchasing the Nomad.
Sorry for the delay. It's "Alex"
The 150-400mm f/4.5 doesn't make much sense; it's about €2000 overpriced for what it offers. The 150-600mm is a better value, and if not, Sony full-frame might be the way to go. You could get the A7R V, Sony 150-600mm, and a 2x teleconverter for less than the 150-400mm f/4.5. It’s significantly overpriced. However, the OM-1 MK II’s performance is closer to that of the Sony A9 III, which is also overpriced, making the MFT system more cost-effective- if you skip the 150-400mm f/4.5.
Yeah I want to get my hands on that 600
Definitely it was a great idea to compare these three lens but after using both the 1.4 and the 2x extenders for many years I can say the possible mistake was including the 2x in this comparison. It simply isn't great. The 40-150 2.8 by itself is an amazing lens. And also you can put that 1.4 on any of the lens you reviewed and the images will continue to be tack sharp. I keep a 1.4 pretty much married to a 300f4 and this is a ridiculously great setup for the cost and weight factors. I'm actually planning to buy another 1.4 to keep it with my 40-150 as I really love the range and sharpness that zoom offers even with that 1.4 attached with it.
Yeah I've played with a1.4 after making this video. It's great
Nice video 👍📸
Thank you
I was asked by moveshootmove to look at the Nomad before they released it. I told them that the laser on the top left corner on the Nomad was going to be an issue once a camera was installed as the camera would block the laser and/or polar scope. It's a shame they didn't listen to the feedback I gave them.
My new nomads threads ar much more loose... Immediately when tightening it, it lifts the beam a lot upwards... :( So basically I have no idea if it is aligned. Sigh.
Test it out
Thank you for the video, quite educational. If I have a 14mm lens can I do 2 min exposures with MSM? Does it produce good round stars?
Totally. 14mm still very hard to see star trail even if the polar alignment wasnt perfect
Yes
Olympus 300F4 for me i am planning to get one for my EM1-X
Can't go wrong
Thanks, Alex!
Thank you 👍🏼 much appreciated
Glad you enjoyed!
