Post-Snow Storm February Tree Farm Update / Barefoot Bonsai
It’s been a wild winter so, what can we expect from spring on our little tree farm? Mid-February is a good indicator of dormant energy storage and potential seasonal growth. We’re really excited to see some of our 4th year trees wake up in 2023!

Pruning and Repotting My Nightshade Bonsai - June 2022 This is one of my favorite bonsai "trees" in my collection. Technically, this Climbing Nightshade is a vine that I've decided to make into a bonsai. Look, I'm the artist here so I'll do what I want. It's a white pine with two "swirls" or branch clusters, living in a pot for years and completely infested with ants. But does that stop us? No! These are the kinds of trees I love to work with. @@BarefootBonsai some cultivars don't like full sun, but you're right, most of them can be hardened off to tolerate it or even thrive in it. I've grown some monsters in full sun that fell over and rooted the side branches where they touched the soil. It was Alabama Sunsets and some sort of Wizard Mix, I think. The Alabama sunsets are my absolute favorite.

    When you day to leave in the cuttings in the planter in the shade "for awhile" is awhile a day or two, week or two? Otherwise love this detailed instruction!

    • @BarefootBonsai
      @BarefootBonsai Месяц назад

      Usually a month will do it but it all depends on how hot and direct the sun is. The thing you want to avoid is burnt leaves. When that happens, you risk losing the cutting. Another tip is to water less in the shade because the coolness will retain water and cause rot if overwatered.

    Can the shape and configuration of a mature elm tree, which was started from a cutting, be somewhat predicted by the cutting from which it was started? Can very early pruning influence the eventual shape and configuration of the mature elm tree? The most perfect, most beautiful elm tree that I have ever seen grows nearby here in the New River Gorge area of West Virginia. I would love to have an elm tree such as this one.

    Forsythia is not a native of America and it should not be propagated or encouraged to be propagated by responsible gardeners anywhere outside of Europe or Asia, where it is native. There are many shrubs that help our native bees you could focus those great propagation techniques on.

      They may not be native, but neither are honeybees. This is one of the earliest flowering plants, and many of our native wasps, flies, beetles, etc. LOVE this plants flower and pollen. In NC there was a tiny little house, with a HUMONGOUS forsythia hedge(fortress?) That shone like the sun, and was home to so many birds, and on the spring it would be covered in insects and even early hummingbirds some years. Focus on things like the Bradford pear... Which suckkkk and escape into the landcape and out compete natives. You won't catch a forsythia overtaking an entire mountainside.

    Always check these for aphids. They are always infested with them. When you try to transplant them they die because of all the aphids. Also wait before you put it in the sun because if you do it too soon it will just roach the plant. Those big leafs are not durable at all and if the roots arent established it just gets fried in a day of sun. I had bad luck with a few of them the latest one im having good luck with. I put it in the garage and gave it some root stimulator now its able to handle direct sun without wilting. I brought it home from my parrents and the under side of every leaf had like 15 aphids on it. Another thing DONT PLANT THIS TREE IN YOUR FRONT YARD!!!! They are aphid magnets and your car and house will be coated in a layer of sticky sht. Make sure to kill them before you bring the tree home because once they are established they are a nightmare to get rid of. Each aphid is born pregnant they dont need to mate to have offspring and they multiply a day after being born. Plus the fking ants protect them so they can eat the honedew out of their as s.
