  • We found another invasive, but useful, plant in our tree line; the Oregon Grape (Berberis aquifolium or Mahonia aquifolium). While this plant isn't an actual grape vine, it does grow grape-like berries which native peoples of America's northwest used to create jams. The roots and soft bark of this mountain plant can be ground down for medicinal purposes including a digestive supplement and a means to lower blood sugar and cholesterol. Overall, a very cool find thousands of miles from its native home.
In the video, I talk about the history and uses for these plants as I dig it out and pot it up for a future bonsai project. We'll see if we can get some blooms off these little guys in the spring.

Thank you! I'm fairly new to gardening, especially transplanting and moving plants, and a part of my property has lots of Oregon Grape. I want to move some to a different location and now I see just how easy it will be.

How do you plant it by the seeds of the berry?

I don’t know, this is the first one I’ve ever had and it didn’t fruit this year.
