Easiest Way to Grow Grape Vines from Cuttings

  • Grapes are easy to grow. You can grow grape vines at home with no cost. Grow grapes from hardwood cuttings. Take cuttings from Grape vines when grapes grow dormant over the winter. Leave one or two nodes behind for future growth. Cut the grape stems to size, about 12 inches or 1 foot long. Peel the bark from the bottom of the cutting and place the cutting in potting soil. Water the soil and keep the soil damp at all times. Grow grapes cuttings in a greenhouse or indoors to get a head start on grapes, otherwise grapes will not grow until the weather becomes favorable in spring. After 2 months new leaves start growing from the nodes on grape cuttings. After 3 to 4 months, the grapes develop enough roots to transplant the grape vines in ground.

I currently have grapes fermenting turning into wine. I have access to 1 acre of grapevines and buy some of the grapes from the owner of the land. The owner sells grapes to a limited amount of people and tries to recoup the cost of growing the grapes. The work involved growing grapes is extensive work. I volunteer to help out in the small vineyard, cause I appreciate having access to the grapes, and it's interesting and peaceful.

My grandma had the most amazing grapes that always grew a ton of produce and were the best grapes I ever tasted. When she died we sold her house but we're really wanting to take some cuttings to hopefully grow our own grapes from hers. This is really helpful.

If your grapes have seeds, you can save some bunches (you dont need to take them off individually) and set them outside in cage or on a sunny platform to dry, then throw them in the freezer for a few weeks, (or months if you want) or leave them outside thru the winter (grapes need to be frozen for a period to germinate, called "stratification") and then put them in any kind of seed storage container. Plant them when it's appropriate. I find that keeping them together and planting them in bunches of 5 or 6 seems to work nicely. Your variety being adapted to your specific microclimate means I recommend doing as much of the process as possible outside, you will have better luck.

I've been so busy working in my garden this Summer that I haven't watched your videos for a while so I'm just hearing that you've been down with bad allergies. I can relate because I share those symptoms as well.
I notice you did not use rooting powder before you put the grape in the ground but yet you still got results. I bought rooting powder for the first time a few months ago and still trying to remember to use it any reason you chose not to use it on the grape cuttings?
