  • Collecting Eastern White Pines for Yamadori Bonsai at the Ridge
I head back up to the Ridge on a brisk October day to harvest some more Eastern White Pines for bonsai. These are absolutely perfect to use for young yamadori bonsai because they're pliable and can be manipulated with wire at this age to lock in a truck shape for future styling.
It might seem counterintuitive to harvest trees in the fall but conifers are actually in the process of going dormant this time of year so pulling out yearlings will not damage their healthy growth.

Pretty cool seeing these little pines pop out of the ground! Do you wash the roots and pot them up? Or heel them in the ground until spring?

I put them in pots with the original soil as a root ball then heel them into the ground in the pots with some hay around them. I find it helps to winter hardy them.

Haha You're the first person to recognize that! Yeah, they're big enough and strong enough for small trees and small enough to pack in your pocket.

@@BarefootBonsai yes man is genius if u was to see me out there man sometimes struggling I would take a bucket 🪣 with me n fill it like like quarter way n place them on there as I go searching but I like this method better with the back back I bet is way more comfortable. I just found it so organized!! I like 👍

@@JesusChrist4ever The backpack makes it so much easier to carry everything, especially since I hike pretty deep in to find trees. I'm actually modifying a frame backpack this spring so I can carry out larger trees. I'll definitely have a video on that process.
