    Really enjoyed the video, thank you. Can you let me know the details of the smock you were wearing and if you recommend it.

    • @barneysbimbles
      @barneysbimbles 3 дня назад

      Thanks Gary, glad you enjoyed it. That smock is the Helikon Tex Pilgrim Anorak. I've had it a few years now and definitely recommend. It's proven to be a durable smock, with a useful array of pockets and good options to help ventilate. It's not especially waterproof (it's not advertised as such) but it copes admirably in a shower and has benefitted from some Nikwax cotton proof treatment. Helikon Tex make a nice SAS style jacket in this fabric which has also taken my fancy. I haven't bought though simply because I have this smock. If you're in the UK then you can find them at the Bushcraft Store or Military 1st (I've no affiliation with those companies, just a happy customer!) 👍

    • @barneysbimbles
      @barneysbimbles 6 дней назад

      Hello matey. I really enjoy my Bergen, had it a few years now and used it for days out and camping trips. It's really well made and I love how the pockets are organised. The only thing that I dislike about the bag is the back system. When you're out walking and work up a sweat, the back pad gets really wet and can become a bit uncomfortable. That aside, wouldn't it be good if they made it just a little bit bigger! I have recently been tempted to replace it with a small Savotta pack, but it's a tough call. 👍

    • @barneysbimbles
      @barneysbimbles 6 дней назад

      Cheers matey and thanks as always for commenting. The camo jacket is made by Arktis and is called the Stowaway shirt. It's a thin showerproof top which is largely designed to be a wind shirt. Arktis are a British company of some repute who supply a lot of kit to the military and civil defence. 👍

      No worries, the Helikon Tex Bergen is a fantastic bit of kit. The Virtus British army patrol pack that you see me using is also relatively difficult to get hold of here in the UK too. I think that's because they're still being issued and I might have gotten lucky! 👍

    • @barneysbimbles
      @barneysbimbles 6 дней назад

      Thanks Roy, I think the Kit Kat is probably more of a chocolate bar than biscuit 🤔 The tarp is the Helikon Tex Supertarp Small, which is a really nice lightweight 2.5x2m tarp. The rucksack is the Helikon Tex Bergen which is a very nice little daypack which can be used for minimal kit camping. (I'm a bit of a Helikon Tex fan!!) And the Camo top is a stowaway shirt by Arktis. It's basically a lightweight wind shirt which is intended to be a mid layer. It's new to me as I only got it at Christmas, but really impressed so far. 👍

    • @barneysbimbles
      @barneysbimbles 10 дней назад

      Cheers matey, glad you enjoyed it. Funnily enough I was thinking of Giles a bit on this camp. You're right there are definitely some similarities, and that dude is pretty hardcore doing what he does. But I'd suggest Giles had some elements that made life a little easier. He had the canvas groundsheet and sheepskin to sleep on. But crucially he had the Canvas Plash Palatka shelter which meant that he could have his fire bowl nice and close and inside his shelter protected from the elements. He definitely wouldn't need as big a fire nor the amount of fuel to keep him warm through the night. I'm not committing to it just yet, but am seriously thinking of doing a Giles style camp when we meet up next month with the canvas kit and sheepskin 👍

    Cracking video Barney and well done for doing this challenge it's got me thinking about doing something like this after watching you and Des doing it two different setups looked like a wet night and you never expect to get much sleep on something like this in this crap weather atvb Jimmy 😎😎👍👍🥃

      @barneysbimbles 11 дней назад

      Cheers Jimmy, really glad you enjoyed it and that it has got you thinking about doing something similar. I thoroughly recommend it and I recall you did do some minimal kit last year with the webbing kit. The Haversack challenge got us all thinking though because we all knew that it meant we wouldn't have room for any sleep kit and that was a massive game changer. All the best, just about to dip in to your latest video 👍

    Very enjoyable video Barney, well thought out for a difficult and challenging overnighter. I have a similar cape but with slits for the arms, but i need a new ground sheet. It must take some thinking out about what to take and strictly what not to take, but i like the concept of the Haversack challenge but i don't have one of those just now. Yes a fire is a must as is a dram, also i think i would pot some stakes either end of the shelter like a fence barrier to keep the wind off. Great video Barney and thanks for sharing 👍 👏👋

      @barneysbimbles 11 дней назад

      Cheers matey, really glad you enjoyed it. Good shout about putting the stakes at either end of the shelter, I had some fire wood piled up at each end, but some sort of screen would have definitely helped. On reflection (and after a decent night's sleep) it was a fun and rewarding challenge and I'd consider doing it again next year. You learn a lot about yourself and it's great fun planning your kit for the challenge too. I tried to follow Dave Canterbury 5C's methodology as that seemed to ensure I had all bases covered. 👍

    I would have loved that... it looked so cosy, Big up respect for camping out with minimal kit, I really enjoyed your video, so much so I didn't fast forward 😂 I can't guarantee not fast forwarding if you go hiking or on a mountain... but a woodland muck about I'm in for the full viddy 👍

      Cheers Lee, appreciate that and thanks very much for the abundance of commentary and sticking around for the full slog! This video does seem to have captured people's attention because the average watch time is double the norm for my vids! But I'll be damned if I'm making minimal kit videos like this every month! 👍

    This reminds me of our ONS , one night survival . No tools, no axes, no saws , no shelter , .. just 2 litres of water and a Ferro rod . .. look up one night survival . One of the guys cooked a sausage on a stick like you . When I did it I didn't sleep for more than five minutes . Thanks for sharing. Well done

      That sounds like an interesting challenge, will look into it. You can't beat cooking sausages on sticks though, it never fails to cast my mind back toy days in the Scouts. Glad you enjoyed it 👍

    Certainly interesting Barney, and definitely entertaining! I hope the type 2 is just starting to pay off a bit now. I learned a fair bit there about litter beds and fire management in a potential survival situation so your sacrifice is much appreciated from me anyway. I'm certainly not brave enough to go out deliberately with by smallest bag on the coldest nights of the year like you mentalists, but I could potentially enjoy a Bushcraft Satchel based warm weather overnighter. My priority would be the opposite of this here perhaps : I'd make sure I had a warm enough sleep system, and not take fire tools etc. This is because I am an unskilled wuss. Happy New Year to you mate! Rich. 👍

      @barneysbimbles 11 дней назад

      Hi Rich, happy new year to you sir. Glad you enjoyed the video, I was quite jaded yesterday, but a good night's sleep and a spot of editing brings on the type 2 fun! Might even do it again next winter! It really helps you realise what you really need to enjoy a simple wild camping. I'd thoroughly recommend undertaking some sort of challenge though to help develop skills, campcraft etc. One simple challenge that I like to do quite regularly is to try and light a fire using only the tinder materials that you can gather on the day. 👍

      Cheers Rich, it's good to do these sorts of challenges in the winter, keeps you on your toes! Not sure about a pocket challenge, we did discuss doing a Smock camping challenge though but that might be a step too far. Will perhaps look to do something again next winter. 👍
