Usually driving an old Land Rover to get there...
I partake in SOTA, summits on the air and I mainly do it on Scottish Mountains & Hills.
I like to travel fast and light! I sometimes use my mountain bike for hill access.
I own and maintain four old Land Rovers (Landies).
I use them for everything from motorsport recovery to camping in. I also live to travel to N. Africa and the Sahara when I get the chance, which isn't often these days.

I use mine on all hf bands. The tuner in the kX3 handles the feed impedance happily on most bands from 80-6m, though you correctly point out that at higher frequencies the radiation pattern of a 28m long dipole has many lobes, none prominent so it is probably not as good as a dipole at the same height. But for convenience it is unbeatable. On 40,20,17,12 and 10m it matches well with the kX3, just like a raw dipole, and on 80, 30 and 15 the original feed length is producing too high an impedance, up to 6:1 swr on 80m. But I have reduced the feed line length to about 9m and that changed it greatly esp on 30m. Now I just QSY, hit tune, see 1.0 and go. Great for instant S2S grabber on another band, just QSY to the spotted freq, make a contact, then go back to where you were. BTW the original article from the designer clearly showed that some variation in dipole length and feedline length and impedance may be necessary to suit each user. I’ve used 300 ohm tv ribbon but now use MFJ 300 ohm twin line, I also use a choke balun at the tx end, and the only coax is internal to the KX3. It’s a great example of impedance transformer action in the feedline. 73 Andrew VK1DA/VK2DA
Good report Andrew, thanks! I suspect I will use one when on holiday or similar. Just too big for the garden. Cheers, Fraser MM0EFI
@ there is always the option of halving the length of the dipole/doublet and halving the feedline length and then you’d have a 40m-10m multiband antenna. Or double size - Gerard Vk2io built a double size version so as to have 160m coverage. 73 Andrew VK1DA/VK2DA
@andrewd4890 that's pretty cool. It is a key flexible design. My harden just isn't suited to centre fed antennas, and I don't operate from home much at all, so make do with a smallish delta loop, 40-6m.
Good video. Christmas has come early for you. Personal gifts are the best. 73 Chris M0RSF
Thanks Chris!! Lots of presents 🎁 ☺️
Nice work Fraser!!!
Cheers Tim. I'm after your Crown 👑 😜
Great antenna, have used it for years. Works terrific, made it myself, easy to make too.
Works well Geoff. Shame I had to hand it back!
@@theradiorover I can send you the construction details. I know you could make it. I have sent it many in VK
The creator of the ZS6BKW lives not far from me. A very knowledgeable chap.
That's interesting. Didn't know you lived in New Zealand 😉
@theradiorover he is now G0GSF
I have a ZS6BKW up, it's not my primary antenna, that is a doublet. But it is a pretty good antenna. I mostly use it for a 40 meter NVIS net with an FT 991A. I would suggest this antenna as a first antenna as long as you can get it high enough.
I don't really have room for one at home, but this performed really well on 40m.
Thanks for the video, always nice to see what others are up to. My g mate works me every weekend on one of those ants. Always nice to get a parcel anyway, not worked anyone in my own country as you did , and confused by a microphone, what's that used for hi hi. Come on you well known you tubers, plug a key in, and lead the way for newbies hi. Cheers mate, nice spot.
Brian, promise I'm learning!!
I would have the mast as close to the water as possible. I remember receiving the Maldives on 80m with a 599+ signal in Norway, and they had the vertical mounted on a small pole in the sea, just above the max tide! ruclips.net/video/54PN0-fm_Lo/видео.html
Yup. Except it was going to rain and I only had 10m of coax. 😁
FANTASTIC... 💯👍
Thank you. Great mast 💪
Interesting antenna there Fraser. That location is awesome. 73 Chris M0RSF
@M0RSF cheers CHRIS! Mull would be a great trip in your van.
Another great video Fraser. I have the 12m version of that mast, I've never used it in anger, however, I've just got an old Mazda Bongo camper on the road and it will be used /p before the year is out.
Excellent! I do love a Bongo Friendee. You don't see too amy of them around these days.
Interesting thanks. Btw there appears to be some kind of club rave going on in the cottage behind you if that apparent pulsing light is anything to go by.

Thanks! Glad you found it interesting. Fraser MM0EFI
Good work Fraser, shows how height makes a big difference. How high did you have it in the end? 73
I had the bottom section of the 14m pole collapsed and it was 1m from the top, so around 12m high. A long wire high up, working really well considering I was at 1m ASL and surrounded by hills.
Well done mate, good success story, what options you have there, dream location. 73.
It was a lovely spot Brian. The antenna worked well. I've handed it back now, so will have to make my own one soon.
Nice location for a weekend and amateur radio!
@hiltopuk is sure is Philip. We go over every October to help with safety at the rally. Nice to have a few days to chill afterwards. Weather can be variable though!

It certainly is! I'm I'm a valley, so there's no chance on 2m. A perfect job with 60m. He told me later his annenuator was turned on, so I'm claiming 5/9 both ways! 😁

OK you asked for it Fraser! I always carry a converted Standard™ CMP115. September 2023, Lizard in Cornwall, some contest or another, KX3 at 15W through a home made loop on 20M, I managed Indonesia and Western Sahara among others so I guess it's good enough. I converted a similarly sized Icom HM-75 but I gave up trying to get the up/down buttons to work. It's fine but I stay with the Standard mic.I never use the MH3- I feel let down by the wallet gymnastics. Recently, I converted a Retevis HK008. This idea came from DL2MAN video originally and Gil, The Radio Prepper also has a video up on doing the conversion. This is an amplified loudspeaker mic. that has an internal rechargeable lithium battery. This takes some of the audio load off the radio. The audio is not perfect but what is really? You can hold it closer to your ear if the going gets tough and it sure beats Elecraft's internal loudspeaker. Yes it is around the size of an MH3 but it doubles as a loudspeaker. I've found that I use it nearly all of the time since I converted it, but I always have the Standard mic. in the go kit as a back up because it's so tiny. Check out Gil's video Fraser. And get up to 12 WPM at least, you'll never look back my friend. Seriously. Another well presented Video Fraser. 73 de Steve.
Thanks Steve, I'll look into that. Morse is at 18 wpm keying, but struggling with copying, so will persevere until it clicks! Cheers, Fraser MM0EFI
I have a 12M DXC and I've only ever put it up once. It sure is tall. I pushed it up vertically too. I think that with the elevated tuned counterpoise that will be a monster RF gun. Beautiful surroundings too. Ben More is the only Munro I've (we've) done Fraser, and since they built the bridge over to Skye I read that it's normally one of the last that baggers do.
We go to Mull every year. I've been up Ben More three times, so have been exploring some of the other summits. We go for the Mull Rally, a closed road stage rally around the islands single track roads. Most of it runs at night.
Good, but no need this high in the field. Use the SPIDERBEAM 10 m. Made the 8 m, it's enough already for simple ant.
Well you'll see in the next video why I needed a tall pole!
@@theradiorover Thank Sir!
Well that video put me through a whirlwind of sensations… First I was nerding curiously about the mast… Then I actually pished myself out loud when all the sections fell down on ya… Finally I nearly had a seizure from the new flashy transitions you are using!!! 😅 Looking forward to seeing how you actually use it.
I laughed and cried Dave 😄
Hi Fraser I have a 10M pole of similar construction I have had to make pins for mine to hold the sections up during hot days as the material expands and causes the section to collapse just like in your second attempt. I have also added a pig tail on the end of the pin to hold the coax cable close to the centre of the pole stopping the wind from getting hold of it and pulling the pole over. MM6CHY
That's a good idea Colin. I've never had one collapse due to heat expansion, however I have had them freeze up due to rime ice and water ingress.
Genuine lolz when it collapsed in try 2.x. 🤣
Dale, you only show up to mock me and scoff at my distress. Thank you 🤣🤣
without sounding rude, it did make me laugh out loud lol, well done for getting it up on your own, I have a DX Commander 12.5mtr and much easier with two people :) MM6RMM

Fun little video the 14M is getting unweildly ..That's the way I lift mine BTW(section by section with the guys attached you dont have the weight all off the centre) ..Looking forward to seeing what you are going to do with it!
I was laughing at my failures when watching the video. It's a very string pole and I think I'll try it with a vertical next. Might take it up a small hill for a try.
Well done that man. Obviously lots will tell you the easy way to do that on your own, but not I. I will say having a fly rod would have been my first option hi. Hope you both enjoyed the time there anyway. I've just found my perfect dx ants, elevated verticals, 4 radials vs 300 radials I did have. Cheers mate.
Just waiting for the "that's not how to do it' comments Brian! Next time I use it, I'll try it with a vertical.
@@theradiorover not to worry mate, we all live and learn. Stick a 40m elevated vertical on there with just 4 radials, and it should go really well. Good as most beams. In actual fact, it's probably the perfect height for that. Would be great to get you in the log. 73

@@theradiorover just been on 40m and 20m here wrkg uk on cw.
@brianfields4479 that's excellent Brian. I've heard 10m open daily too around noon UTC.
Nice video... I used a 41' DX Engineering aluminum vertical on my Virginia property for 5 years... with great results. But it had a handy tilt base... can't imagine putting up a 45 ' mast that is not even the antenna! Not sure what they built this for ... do they say it is a suitable for a perm mast for an EFHW wire or something at home? Spiderbeam built it study but why???? :-) Bob
Bob, they actually do one that's almost twice that length! I actually think it's a great mast for a permanent set up, or when on holiday. There's no way I'd carry it up a hill though...or maybe I will for a transatlantic SOTA event. 😀
@@theradiorover wow twice that? 😳

Ooer! Expensive Battery Charge!
The engine uses 1 litre an hour on idle, so that charge cost me about £1.40 😂
Interested in your 3s battery charger Fraser. What is it called? I've got many different ways to charge the batteries I've made. I'm always looking for another.
RUclips won't let me post links in comments, however it's a simple pcb from Ebay. Charging current can be set by unsoldering resistors IIRC. Search for 3S lipo or li-ion charger, or drop me a line if you can't find it. Cost was about £5. Cheers, Fraser MM0EFI
@@theradiorover cheers, so is it a balance charger? I've made 3 s lipos using reclaimed cells of many types. I've tended towards adding balance leads and using a RC style charger but these are a bit of a faff. I have also made batteries with BMS modules though the charging is easier, as BMS tends to have a wide voltage range, the physical construction is far more honerous if done well.
@M0KVI this one isn't balanced. I like it because it's hyper portable. At home I use a turnigy balanced charger, which has settings for every chemistry and charging rate imaginable.
@@theradiorover ah ok so it's just charging (which is fine obv) then you can balance if req when home. Never thought about that. In looking I've just found a USB-C boost circuit that does the same as you're describing it takes a USB c input of 5 volts that could be very useful. (I'm my use case).
@M0KVI yes, seen those. You can get USB C "everything " these days. They do one for charging my yaesu hand held as well.
There is only one thing better than a KX2 and that’s two KX2,s. Almost sold mine in the summer, but came to my senses and kept it.
Smart move 👍
Well done.
Thank you!
Disappointing to hear this about what is a pretty expensive radio for its type and QRP power imho, albeit having only been licenced for a few months. I get the ease of use and portability being big selling points, but with the latter, given it is pretty much designed to be used in the field, one would expect that high durability would be a given. I think I may have to cross it off the future list.
Let's just say I give my kit some abuse! The battery lead breaking is the main issue here. Alternatives- ic-705 which is half the power and three times the weight. Russian tx-500 which is supposed to be waterproof but isn't and has had issues with audio amp failure. The little ittle and low volume produced QDX and QMX are alternatives if you are a CW or digital op. Are there any others you were thinking of? I think I'll stick with the KX2. It's never let me down in the field. Cheers, Fraser MM0EFI
Buy a KX2, you won’t regret it. If Fraser hasn’t broken his yet, it can’t be all that bad a radio 💪
@adamap2796 very true. It has survived everything.
Nice looking radio, unfortunately , unfortunately being a full time carer, I just do not time to get out as I used too, hence the amount of work on home station. Enjoy yourself mate.
Cheers Brian 👍 You do what you can with your personal situation, and you do it brilliantly 👏

I'm phoning Greta LOL
Always! 😁
Very nice radio, bummer about the encoders. Maybe order a few spare if it's affordable. As for the battery, would it be possible to add a jack to the rear lid or a pigtail? Just a thought. Have fun! BTW I'm still using a FT-817/8 ND , I would love to get one like you have( my wife would cook me) 73 gud DX!
The kx2 has a power jack, so one never needs to open the case, however it is more compact with the battery inside. Elecraft now produce an internal charger board. It's expensive! Also, I have three batteries and like to rotate them. As for the encoders, they are available. Mine have been OK, except for one really hot day in the USA when the tuning dial stopped working! Nothing wrong with the old yaesu. Great radio. Nothing else loke it. Cheers, Fraser MM0EFI
