I love Geneva! I used to go there often when I lived in Grenoble. That was before my ham radio days, though, and a good 10 years before SOTA was born. As always, thanks for the great video, OM. -Thomas (K4SWL) PS: I want a full summer in Switzerland just to hit summits! :)
Thanks for the video 👍 I'm yet to use more than 20W myself so far, but have taken advantage of operating aboard, which was main reason that I went on to get full.
Very enjoyable video. 😊 Switzerland is a beautiful place but ruinously expensive. I found this out when I drew money out of an ATM and the smallest note it would dispense was 100CHF which was about £80 at the time. I then used a big part of this buying a map! Have a good trip! 73 M0WIV
Geneva was not cheap John! Montreaux was better, surprisingly. Thankfully that part of Switzerland is surrounded by France, so we didn't have to go far for better value.
Just built a 9:1 unun for use with my newly made w3edp random wire. Tunes up on all bands 80 to 10 m. Thanks for the inspiration. Hope to hear you on air sometime. 73s
I love my W3EDP. Ok, with high sunspots you can work the world with a bit of wet string or a whip, but when there's less solar activity, the W3EDP is great for 80m to 20m and does work all the way up to 10m as well.
Cheers Chris. It was rather pleasant compared to the windswept barren summits we're used to!! We even had a coffee at the summit restaurant. Very civilised. 🙂
I understand the point being made about licence class, however, the DXCC that is being operated from permit UK Intermediate licence holders to operate there also. So you don't actually need full licence.
Good point Billy, but you get my drift. The full license opens up a world of possibilities, especially a wee bit of portable operating while on holiday. So far EA8, CT, W4, W7, HB9, oh and that time I was 9X0CX for two weeks. 8P next...
Jess, A nice change for me compared to windswept rocky Scottish summits. Quite civilised too, with the cafe nearby. Many smaller summits on the continent have restaurants or pubs!
I usually use internal batteries with my kx2. These are 3S li-ion. I didn't want to take chargers to Switzerland to simplify things, so I packed a 4200mAh LiFePO4 that plugs into the external power socket of the radio. The radio actually had a li-ion inside it at the time, but it sensed the higher voltage from the external battery and used that. The internal battery gets put to use, very good use in my next video 😀
@@jackjones-er1ts you could power it from your car. You may want to use a leisure battery for this though. Running a 100w radio from your car battery for an extended time could be risky! A leisure battery is designed to be deep cycled and you could easily trickle charge it at home. For SOTA, you are not allowed to have any part of your station attached to or powered by your vehicle. POTA and WWFF allow this though.
One of the most underrated RUclips channels out there. Quality and content
Fraser creates amazing videos, I love this channel
Much appreciated. Thank you Chris 😊
Another great watch and I completely agree, the only reason I got my full licence was SOTA on holiday !
Portable Ops + full license = maximum fun 😁
I love the little “bonjour” while calling cq 😂
Nice Video Fraser…
Livin the dream 👍🏻
Cheers Dave! Just wait for the next video.
It is Epic 🙂👍

Hope you're well Thomas! An HB9 summer would be amazing and is definitely something I will do in the future. Maybe a camper van trip.

Now that the sun is pretty active 5 or 10w will work the World!

That's exactly why I got my Full licence. There's nothing like operating abroad.
Exactly that Gerald!

Well do I get a badge for guessing HB before the call ;-).. You're having a nice pile up even with that QRP rig !
Well spotted! No prize, but it's the taking part that counts. 😀👍

Very civilised, we have it tough in GM land 😅
We do mate. Everywhere we went there were cafes and pubs on tops of hills.
Another superb video Fraser, it looks an amazing location. 🙂

Thanks Duncan. We had mixed weather that week, but grabbed a few hours one morning in between showers. Nice to have a picnic bench for a change!
beautiful spot.

I can think of lots of reasons to get a full Amateur Radio Licence ?
I can't
what is that you're using to power the radio?

@@theradiorover what would be the best power source to use for a yaesu 891 when mobile? or could i wire it straight to the battery of my car?

True, the only reason 😔
