Serge, you HAVE to show Rob what the legendary Jackal snipers of Halo 2 can do to players. There is a certain compilation video I'm thinking of called "Halo 2 Campaign on Legendary in a Nutshell". Its like 2 minutes, but it really lives up to the title :)

I think giving Rob more of a hard number to follow might drive your point about the Elite shields home easier. You have about 5 seconds to attack and kill the Elite before his shields will start to recharge, and I believe the rate varies between difficulties/games. Your other point about clearing out the cannon fodder first is great, Grunts, Jackals - then Elites. Different games have variations, but they all have the easy enemies deploying "swarm-tactics". Failure to follow this order will lead to pain, of various degrees. Other than that I think Rob really started to do great after getting warmed up and during his Heroic run. You have really come far, Rob! Legendary, while doable, is just the game turned up to 11. I think Bungie themselves said that "Heroic is the way Halo is meant to be played", so that should be canon then, right? Next: Rob beating Halo: CE "LASO" :D Looking forward to seeing Rob tackle the more intelligent Elites of Reach.

I last listened to these logs back in 2010, took hours to collect all of them. Did it without looking up their locations, so that part was fun :) Honestly, just roaming the city at night and finding all of the hidden caches of gear was great. Got to say I personally appreciated the side-story more this time, with you guys, because the first time it felt very random and somewhat disconnected from the story in the game, for me. I know they tie together nearer the end, but I think what I really missed out on was the Dante-reference. The story makes a lot more sense when you know about this, in my opinion. Serge, all I can say is well freaking done. Your dedication to this series is beyond what I first expected when I started watching you guys. I’ve watched a lot of people play through the Halo series for the first time and honestly, out of all the others, I enjoy watching you guys the most. Not only cause I get to see Rob play through Halo for the first time but also cause of how patient you are with him and you always try to be knowledgeable, but not pushy. You know, in a way, you’re kind of like Vergil to Rob’s Dante with how you’ve been guiding him through this series. Making sure he doesn’t miss anything but also making sure it isn’t too hard for him to get through. It’s just… it’s freaking awesome. I absolutely love you guys and I cannot wait for each new upload you guys make with this series 🥹

Sadie I believe was hired by ONI. She works with Vergil because she is one of the only people that understands him. Basically a translator and handler for Vergil working with ONI. She was later captured by rebels but was rescued by Alpha 9 the same ODST team from this game. As far as we know she still works for ONI as Vergil's translator and handler.

Another animation by NotPipi is his adaptation of Halo: Breaking Quarantine, which is a Japanese manga-style comic that shows how Johnson escaped the Flood research facility, as well as some of Halo: First Strike were he meets Chief in orbit of the ring before they capture a Covenant capital ship. I'm pretty sure those parts use some dialogue from Halo: First Strike similar to how this one uses parts of Halo: The Flood. Also, HiddenXperia has a video about Zuka 'Zamamee if Rob is interested.

I like the theory that the Elite briefly seen was Zuka 'Zamamee, but it may not have been. I think at this point in time Zuka was still unconscious. That said, NotPipi may have overlooked these details or didn't care as this animation isn't canon to the official lore. I'm inclined to think it's that last one as while I initially thought the Elite was a minor (the common blue ones), I just realized that he's actually a SpecOps Elite (the black ones), just like Zuka. Also I'm pretty sure Chief and Spark's voices were AI based on their weird intonations.

I remember reading about Marvin Mobuto in the novelization! I had no IDEA there was an animation about him. That story was GREAT! Thanks a MILLION for sharing it! I'm with Serge! But eventually, she grew big enough to play with her Dad and she still plays Halo to this day. Possibly one of the youngest Halo fans at the time (as she started in utero) LOL She is 20 now, just graduated in May with an AA in Psychology, BS in Criminal Justice with a minor in psychology and in 3 years she will have a Juris Doctor. That has nothing to do with Halo, but a mother must flex sometimes LOL.

Hey Surge, have you heard of the SPV3-mod for Halo: Combat Evolved? It really revamps the game and adds things only seen in the later games, like Brutes and Drones, and much more. Like being able to use the DMR from Reach just feels so good, and also natural - like it was supposed to be there in the sandbox. It is actually really cool because a lot of the stock missions have been altered to let you go different routes, and the devs also added more missions between the official ones. Sadly, I believe it is only for PC, but might be worth looking at some gameplay just to show Rob "what could have been".

343 Guilty Spark was full of environmental storytelling like this. I don't know if Serge (Serge? Surge?) knows about this, but in the swamp there are mysterious figures running around, who are later revealed to be Flood combat forms. At the beginning of the mission, there's an explosion that launches a Jackal, a Grunt and a Shade turret into the air. And finally, all the Shades inside the facility are pointed at the entrance to the room where the Flood were stored, indicating they were set up to keep something in rather than out.

Please tell me you have the Oddworld games in your long list for Rob to play! Those games have amazing charm like Halo and branch into PlayStation territory. Also, one of the oddworld games was a launch title for the Original Xbox right along side Halo: CE!

The Engineers are being used to search for the portal to the Ark, as Serge pointed out. This is because they're Forerunner creations, so they can be used to find their technology. This was one of the few times they were deployed in an active warzone, as Engineers are generally used for maintenance on Covenant technology like ships, or dowloading information. This is why the squad seem to have never encountered them before. This is also how the Engineer Quick To Adjust downloaded Vergil. It and the other Engineers were looking for the portal to the Ark when it accidentaly downloaded the Superindendent and essentially became a vessel for him. It was Vergil who was guiding you across Mombasa's streets through the Engineer.

Finally

I think an interesting way to think of this one is that 1337 is the clone-Chief player 2 plays as when you play co-op campaign. It explains the silly atmosphere as co-op games get real silly sometimes. And why Chief and Cortana seem to know him so well

This legendary ending was quite forgettable compared to the other games. I can't remember if you explained what the "Engineers" really are and their origins to Rob or not. Probably doesn't spoil anything for later as they don't really play any part later in the story in the games. Might give some more context other than that they were enslaved.

Rob was much more coordinated than the previous runs, impressive! Make sure he customizes his multiplayer character for Reach, I certainly never regretted it!

33:57 There was a movie adaptation of Halo CE directed by Peter Jackson and written by Alex Garland of 28 Days Later fame in development around 2005, but it was scrapped because I think Peter Jackson was also working on King Kong 05 at the same time. However, the ODST suits, Covie carbine prop and a fully functioning Warthog were re-used for Halo Landfall and Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn.

The rookie's real name is Jonathan Doherty and that was revealed in a reference book of all things. Don't let Rob see this part because spoilers for the audio logs and Halo 5, but I think Quick To Adjust/ Vergil and Sadie lived on Luna (Earth's moon) until Quick To Adjust/ Vergil (whatever you want to call him) was recruited into a mission by the ODST squad, now Spartans, during the Created uprising. And finally, the in-universe reason for the rookie never speaking in ODST is because he either has no-one to talk to or he keeps getting cut off.

I think the best advice to give to Rob before Reach is to be moving a lot more, as I think the reason why he's having so much difficulty aside from being new to video games is that he's standing still a lot. This will probably be even more crucial in Reach due to the insane amount of Brute chieftans, Elite ultras and Hunters, not to mention that regular Elites have a broken one-shot un-dodgeable melee ability they constantly spam on higher difficulties. Just a bit of advice though.

Something I think always gets overlooked about Halsey, is that while she truly lacks the ethical code to be able to carry out the Spartan program, she was also acting in part because of recent escalations between the UNSC and Insurrection into nuclear attacks, part of which is hinted at in the Origins II cinematic where the city we watched be built through the time-lapse be destroyed by an Insurrectionist, offing 2 million people and injuring a further 8 million. This event was the same year the Spartan II project was greenlit and the children were abducted. I see Halsey as more of a 'Byronic Hero' character, but rather than struggling against her "dark power" or whatever, it's the battle between her conscious morality and her intensely capable, if not cold, scientific mind. She constantly shows remorse and understanding of her own flaws, but she is also reinforced by 30 years of a losing war in which her soldiers are the only thing standing between Humanity and extinction. Even without the possibility of the Covenant showing up, Spartans UNDOUBTEDLY would have minimized human cost by preventing the UNSC from countering the Insurrection's own Nuclear attacks with their own Nuclear option, because they would now have an unmatched Spec Ops unit which could act as a scalpel rather than the battering ram which was the standard military response. The other explanation of how Johnson survived '343 Guilty Spark' is that earlier in his military career, he survived a lethal dose of radiation while using a crate of plasma grenades to hold a position. The resulting damage to his cells, while non-lethal to a mildly enhanced human, proved to dissuade the Flood from taking over him, as on a cellular level, they thought he was in the "Goldilocks Period" of radiation poisoning due to the condition of his cells. Thus, they didn't imagine he would even make good biological material if he had such high levels of radiation/radiation damage present within his body and ignored him allowing him to escape the facility and later regroup with Marine forces.

Congratz on beating ODST, it was a wild ride for sure. It was the game where Rob learned both to respect and hate Hunters at the same time, not to mention those pesky Chieftains. Sergeant Johnson was actually a playable character in the 360 version of the game, in firefight. He was only available as a pre-order bonus, which I am to this day still kicking myself for not getting. Not sure if he is around for the MCC firefight. My mind and body is ready for Reach, Rob will love it. Much like Serge, Reach is the Halo game I spent the most time on (multiplayer), played it from 2 days before official release date (pre-order came in early for some reason) and I remember getting messages from friends on Xbox asking me how I got to play so early. Played Reach until about 2014, managed to get to Reclaimer (could not be arsed with the last 2 000 000 credits needed for Inheritor rank). The clan community on Reach was amazing and I still miss it to this day. It had that weird mix of overly invested lore-nerds who role-played Spartans and then people who just liked the game. 360 was just prime gaming. I remember Rob asking way back what multiplayer in Halo would look like, and unless you have something specific in mind, I would be honored if you showed him one of my recorded games from back in the day. Put up a few on RUclips, years ago, for posterity. I won't shamelessly self-advertise the channel name, so just reply if interested. I think it was always intended to be Chief as a child. But realizing that Halo 3 takes place on Earth, maybe the location is what matters. I had a new impression that those were just kids sitting in the same spot on Earth where Chief fought. It would make more sense for them to be saying what they’re saying BEFORE humanity became space-faring..
