Laowa 25mm f/2.8 2.5-5X Ultra Macro Lens Review
Most macro lenses go up to 1:1 magnification, some even up to 2:1 but this lens isn’t an ordinary macro lens because it has a magnification range of 2.5 up to 5x magnification which will allow you to take some very unique super close up images that you can’t take with a normal macro lens.
In this video I am going to review and give my thoughts on the Laowa 25mm f2.8 2.5-5x ultra macro lens. I’m also going to give some tips on the best ways to use this lens and some things to consider as well.

6 Reasons Why Your Macro Photos Aren't Sharp
I wish I had as much passion for my photography as you do for yours. Keep it up. Great photos.
Thanks for the kind words!
UGLY insect. 😮
Keep at it. You’re work is this close to getting noticed by millions
Thank you so much 🙏🏾🙏🏾
Very good. One tip for stability, is to use a stick, a cane, a walking pole or whatever. Put you left hand on the stick, which you can slide up and down to the right hand. Then rest the end of your lens on the hand holding the stick. You get more stability, of your camera is pressed to your face, or something else, say your leg kneeling down. It's amazing how much extra stability it gives. However, your flash diffuser can catch on the stick. So just hold the stick at an angle. You don't get the maximum stability, but it is still better than just handholding. You can rapidly change height, from just above the ground, to shoulder height or how.
absolutely AWESOME!
Nice to you in action again Young man 😊 wery skillfull
Hi, such an excellent video. I learnt something new today. I have a query before i buy one of this. I am a beginner with a basic camera Nikon D5200 with a kit lens 18-35mm and a zoom lens 70 -300mm lens, so does the Raynox DCR 250 works on these? thanks for your support
Thank you, glad it was helpful. And yeah it will work with both of those lenses
Great Macro shots.
My dumahh read it "tiger swallowed butterfly"
Thanks so much for the informative video👍 Great work!
Dude I love your work, keep them coming
Thank you 🙏🏾🙏🏾 I appreciate the love!
Nice work. You have helped inspire me to put together a kit and give this a try.
I appreciate it 🙏🏾🙏🏾 glad I was able to inspire you, hope you enjoy your kit
Another skillful capture. Looks great!
Many thanks!
Very well done and helpful lens comparison. Sometimes I watch comparisons and can tell quickly that the reviewer already liked one particular item over the other. I didn't get that with your review, very objective and unbiased. I saw today that OM dropped the price on the 100-400mm down to $1000 making it even more of a value lens. However, as you noted as well as many others, the 300mm seems like just a better lens, so I'll probably wait and eventually get that one. Regarding the two Olympus teleconverters, I had both the 1.4 and the 2.0 for a short time (used with the 40-150mm f2.8). I fully agree with you that the 2.0 softens the images too much. I ended up returning it and only use the 1.4 now. Great images by the way. Where were they taken? Some of the scenery looks like where I live in Delaware.
Thank you 🙏🏾 my goal with this video was to be as unbiased as possible. And I’m from South Carolina and that’s where all the photos were taken
This is beautiful Trey!
Thank you 🙏🏾🙏🏾
Once you’ve used the 300f4 pro, 40-150mm 2.8 pro there is just no point trying to find better. The only other lens that’s better is the Panasonic Leica 200mm 2.8. As good as the oly’s are that 200 Leica is just unmatched. Unfortunately the IS isn’t as good on the oly bodies as when using the 300f4 pro and other oly pro lenses with IS. I really hope they update the 40-150mm 2.8 to add IS. But only if they can maintain the image quality
Well done comparison and very nice images. I see that others have cleared up the issue with the Focus Clutch -- I turn it off on all my bodies, as I too find it to be more of a problem than a help. One other suggestion I would make regarding the 100-400: You can use both the Lens IS and Body IBIS together, but it functions differently than Synch IS with the 300mm -- it is definitely not as good. What I have found, especially for bird shooting is that I get more sharp, in-focus shots using just the IBIS, without the Lens IS turned on. The issue I have seen is that although the Lens IS works very well, there is a slight hesitation when you press the shutter button before the image actually stabilizes. When using the IBIS only, the stabilization is instant as soon as you press the shutter button. With birds moving so fast, instant stabilization is important. Have a successful and blessed 2025!
Very informative video. I got my om1-mk2 last thanksgiving and am still working on all the features of this camera. I’ve subscribed to your channel and am looking forward to more videos from you. You provided some information that I have been wondering about but couldn’t find. I do have a question about your diffuser set up. Is it used primarily for insects or are there other uses for it? Thanks!
Nice shots. I just picked this lens and I can understand the difficulty of using it. Just trying to focus on something in my house with plenty of light is a little challenging. Can't wait to get out and try it. I am hoping I will be able to get snowflakes this winter.
Красивое фото!,👍
Amazing work!📸
Trey- tell me sir, did you buy it new or used? The spider vid at the end is with this lens? If so, congratu-freakin lations that is way stable for handheld. I have used reversed lenses, and currently use a couple of macro lenses, mainly the mzuiko 60 mm macro for my EM1 MKii with a raynox 250. Tell me, do you find yourself doing more at the 2.5x vs closer to 4-5x capability of the lens?
I bought mine new. And that video wasn’t taken with the Laowa. Most of the shots you saw in the video were closer to 4-5x
Well done :)
Thank you 🙏🏾🙏🏾
I have owned the lens since the time it was released. I agree with your comments. A nice, straight forward review.
Great review.
Thank you 🙏🏾
I like your style. Love supporting up and coming artists with skills. 👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you so much 🙏🏾🙏🏾
Great video. It is good to see a video using a lens that shows wear rather than one on loan for a week expecting success. Even for an experienced 1:1 macro photographer, these will require a learning curve. I have no experience with the Laowa 25mm but do own and love the AstrHori 25mm which spans 2x to 5x rather than Laowa's 2.5x lower limit. That small bit is really useful since it fills the gap between it and the Laowa 85mm 2x I use for more 'normal' macro. It's other advantage is a considerably lower price than the Laowa. All of the other things you point out apply equally to the AstrHori since things like diffraction are laws of physics and not faults of lens design. While these lenses are not recommended as the first or only macro lens and certainly not for a beginner in macro, they are a lot of fun and reveal things you have never previously suspected to exist.
I'm a fan of all your videos
Thank you 🙏🏾 glad you enjoy them
Thanks for the video. It’s definitely a highly specialized lens that could be frustrating for the new macro shooter. Having shot with the Canon 65mm 1-5x lens for years, another manual focus lens, I’ve come to the conclusion that the Laowa 100mm 2x lens is my best bet in the field, while the Canon 1-5x and microscope objectives from 5x to 20x are strictly studio lenses using a motorized rail. At 75, the steadiness is no longer there. Question: when you stack in the field, do you move forward and back, or in just a single direction? If back and forth, do you sort your shots to be close to far, or just stack in any order? Enjoy your videos - keep it up!
Great review and stunning photos
Interesting review Trey, easy to see how it would be so frustrating to use, very challenging but great results for those like you who have the necessary skills to master it! 😀👍🦥
This is one of my fave and most hated lens. Its by far my best lens for shooting things under 2mm, but it will punish any movement, and light will be a real challenge. Of course that is more because of the nature of what you are shooting, and that it can still shoot pics of animals under 1mm is pretty amazing.
Beautiful as always! ☮️💟
I have the lens, and agree on all points.
Laowa also has really good 50mm 2x manual macro on MFT. It's manual and is roughly the same price as the Olympus 60mm for people who work manual.
Yeah I seen that one. I might get one and compare it with the 60mm for a video
Trey for President! 😁
Do you breath while Focus Bracketing?
It depends on the situation. Sometimes I will hold my breath if I’m having trouble staying still
Do you Shot jpg or raw?
Jpeg
Nice! Greetings from Germany
In the camera menu look for "MF clutch" and there you can disable it so it will not be active in either position. It used to bother me but now that I have used the lens for a couple of years I find I use that focus clutch more that I expected. Especially if I have a small bird in lots of brush where the camera auto focus is focusing on branches I can use the manual clutch to fine tune on the bird. Conestee looks like a great place. Have you been to up Congaree NP? That's on my bucket list for this spring. Thanks for the videos.
I haven’t been to Congaree yet but that is also a place I’ve been wanting to go for a while now. Maybe this year I will finally go
Amazing photo
I have watched many of your videos. You do great work.
Thank you so much 🙏🏾🙏🏾
Seeing your beautiful macro photos, I will probably look into buying such a diffuser before spring. It will be some time before I can approach that level but sometimes the road to it is just as important.
I have tried the 2.0 extender with the 100-400mm several times in cloudy weather. The ISO value was 12800, sometimes sofware manages to improve the images somewhat. I use DXO and Topaz for this, the danger is that some birds do not look real.
I own the 40-150mm f2.8 PRO, and it also has that hood design.
The 300 F4 is much sharper. I have the 100-400 as not everything is far away. Using the 300f4 at times I would miss shots as the subject was too close. I just can’t justify the 150-400 it looks good but so $$$
Beautiful spider!
I can imagine how much trouble it must have been for you to bring another tripod and camera to record your activities. Good job, man. My favorite shot is the flowers.
It’s not too difficult honestly. I use GoPro cameras to record myself so the extra weight I’m carrying isn’t an issue since GoPros are small and compact
Hi, thanks for the review. Does this lens need adaptar for using on Nikon z series cameras? thanks
I don’t think you need an adapter for nikon z cameras, but I’m not 100% sure
I never thought you could stack shooting handheld. Thank you.
