- In this video, I am going to give my first impressions on the Olympus 300mm lens. This was my very first session out with this lens so my thoughts in this video were all based on the photos I took that day. A full review of this lens will be up on the channel once I get more time out in the field with it.

Great images, and a nice overview of this lens. Thanks!
I was happy to see your initial impressions of this lens/tc combination. I just ordered both for my OM-1 to replace the PL100-400 that I'd been using. Your video was great!
Yes . 100-400 and 300mm with x1.4 may seems to be similar in spec. But because the 300mm is so sharp, when you start to crop (which is often necessary for wildlife shots), the difference in sharpness can be quite obvious. The 300mm is crazy sharp.
Nice video! The 300mm F4 Pro is the reason I still use MFT for birds. I started about 5 years ago with the Panasonic G9 with the PL 100-400mm which seems to have similar image quality to the Olympus 100-400. Then I went all in on Canon but eventually got annoyed that they didn’t have a long zoom that works for birds. I used their RF 100-500 for a couple of years and when they announced the crop sensor R7 I was ecstatic because I thought it would make the 100-500 more useable for birds. It does but I found the R7 very frustrating to use. I rented and then bought an OM-1 to get the subject detection AF and overall speed. I used it for nearly a year with the PL zoom but finally sold my Canon gear and bought the 300mm Oly and both TCs. Great lens that handles the TCs very nicely. It is the sharpest lens that I have ever owned. With that lens and good noise reduction software I may stick with MFT forever.
Yeah I feel the same way about sticking with MFT forever. I don’t have as much experience with different lenses and cameras like you do, but it’s hard to picture a super telephoto lens being better than this one
I'm tempted by this lens but I have the Panasonic 100-400.
I find I'm cropping to 1600mm fov in most bird photo's. So my thinking is that while up to around 1200mm fov the Olympus will blow the Panasonic away, I'm thinking won't cropping even more to make up that extra 400mm end up making the images pretty similar?
Or is the oly really that sharp?
@@letni9506the 300 is that sharp.
I'm impressed you can even see the squirrels amongst the trees, never mind take such great shots on your first outing. It is a great lens, but I suspect you could screw a milk bottle on the front of your camera body and still do a pretty decent job of photography. Great to see your versatility and skill across macro and telephoto, no doubt you'll also nail whichever genre you try next!
I appreciate it, means a lot to me 🙏🏾🙏🏾 and maybe I could try the milk bottle for a video one day lol
Nice video. The lens is on my to get list. An added bonus as ever when someone shoots an animal with a camera and not a gun. Subscribed to see more
You got some great shots of the squirrels. Made beautiful photos on what appears to be a dreary day. I just got this lens (and also the 1.4x) this winter. I look forward to the hummingbirds returning so I can put it to good use
Thank you so much 🙏🏾 hope your experience with it goes well
Congratulations on your new lens! You’re really going to enjoy that combo when the butterflies and dragonflies make their appearance! My 300 F4 +1.4 TC stays on my OM 1 constantly unless I’m shooting macro. What a fun, fun nature lens!
Thank you 🙏🏾🙏🏾 yeah it it’s a very good lens and I’m really enjoying it so far. Hopefully I’ll get a chance in the spring and summer to use it for larger bugs such as butterflies and dragonflies
Incredible photos! Your video makes me curious about this lens
Thank you 🙏🏾🙏🏾 I watched your video on the lens and you’ll definitely like it more with the 1.4 converter. I rarely use it without the converter now and the good thing is that It doesn’t seem to affect the image quality at all
Great film, enjoy your new lens, I look forward to seeing your review! I use the Nikon 300mm f4 pf lens, it's very light weight and focusses down to just over four feet! Using a 1.4 teleconverter barely affects image quality either! Cheers!
Thank you 🙏🏾 still very much enjoying it, going to do the full review later this year sometime
Great video!
Hi, thank you for your review. In my opinion, this glass is the best on the market. Sharpness and quality are unattainable regardless of the lighting conditions and comparable to glasses from other manufacturers. I have been using this glass for many years and am always enthusiastic about the kind of pictures that come from it. Congratulations on this glass! Keep it, enjoy it and have a lot of fun with it!
Thank you so much 🙏🏾🙏🏾 yeah I’m really enjoying this lens so far, glad I upgraded to this. And I agree on the best in the market part. Only $3000 for a very sharp 600mm equivalent lens when a full frame 600mm will cost over $10,000 and is a lot heavier. Hard to get better than that
Currently own the 40-150 F 2.8 trying to decide between this and the 100-400 leaning towards the 300 and seeing this video more so, I already have the 1.4 converter but also might see about the x2 converter
If you do get the 2x then there’s a very noticeable quality drop off with it but it’s still possible to take some good photos with it
I found the Olympus 300mm f4 pro lens to be an amazing lens whenever I used it.
i had the lens since 2017, its a real marvel, it helped me to improve so much, first i used it with em 5 mark II, was amazed by how sharp it is, coming form lumix/lieca 100-300 f 5.6, that was a massive leap. now i use it with OM1 and get really nice results. got the 100-400 mm f6.3 it preforms like the 300 mm f4 when the light is right as you said. and guess what light is always right here where i live. but the lack of in-synch-IS make it useless in videos.
why did i get the 100-400, its because i had a very bad fall when using it, the fall was so bad that i thought as i was lying on the ground on my face, i thought that the lens will be shattered to pieces, but it did not, not even a scratch, but it lost its sharpness at f4. so i had to send it for repair that took about 6 month since no Olympus dealer in Saudi Arabia or any other Arab country around me.
the lens is really tremendous, enjoy it.
Stunning shots mate - even from those first two that you didn't consider to be that sharp!
Thank you 🙏🏾🙏🏾
The only reason I don't already have this lens is because I found the Panasonic Leica 200 2.8 on a deal I couldn't refuse. You are going to enjoy it!
Oh yeah I’ve really been enjoying it so far
Some nice shots mate, I used it for the first time last friday but without the tc, my findings matched yours, very sharp lens
Thank you 🙏🏾🙏🏾 glad you are enjoying it
Spectacular
Thank you 🙏🏾
So beautiful Trey! Wonderful images and video! Did you have to crop the spider image? If yes, how much? Looks like the lens is a great purchase! Look forward to more! ☮️💟
Thank you 🙏🏾🙏🏾 and yeah I did crop it but it wasn’t a heavy crop
I loved the squirrel footage and photos you captured Trey. Those shots of the little guy poking out of the tree were awesome. I used the 300mm and 1.4 extender for around 8 months while I waited on the 150-400mm lens arriving. Prior to that, I had been using Sony with the 200-600mm and I just thought the Olympus gear was so much better. Easier to handle, better in low light, great stabilisation etc. I'm sure you'll get many more fantastic stills and videos with this kit!
Better in low light than the Sony 200-600? Really? Sony's 600mm F/6.3 is "worse in low light" than a 840mm F/11 equivalent? I highly doubt that. Even if you put a 1.4x on the Sony, it is still faster at 840mm F/8.8
Sure, it's lighter and the stabilisation is better, but "better in low light"? Cmon now.
The aperature is always the same no matter how big the sensor is.@@gamebuster800
Thank you 🙏🏾🙏🏾 I’ve been really enjoying it so far. More videos with me using it will be up on the channel
Great close ups. Excellent review. Now you have a telephoto and macro lens at the same time.
Thank you 🙏🏾🙏🏾 and yep, really enjoying the lens so far
Nice video. I love my 300 mm F4.
Teleconverter greatly affects autofocus performance when shooting birds in flight. Less light means higher ISOs and slower shutter speeds. I prefer to crop then have blurry photos. For static subjects it’s good enough
Great video and thanks for posting it. I have the Oly 40-150 F4 and that lens is razor sharp. You would have to try really hard to take a bad photo with it if you have one. I like using it for flowers, insects and close up shots of birds and other animals and I have not been disappointed. I do have the Oly 75-300 F4.8-6.7 and it can take some amazing shots when you can get it to focus. I recently changed some of settings on my Em1 Markll and it seems to be working a lot better now. It can be razor sharp as well but I'm sure it's not as good as the 300mm that you're shooting with. Anyway, nice video and keep up the good work. I follow you on Instagram and just followed you on Flickr as well. I think you do amazing work. Have a great day!!!
Thank you so much 🙏🏾🙏🏾 means a lot
Very cool! Will you make these kind of shots of wildlife in the summer to?
Thank you 🙏🏾🙏🏾 and yeah I plan on doing that this spring/summer
I use an EM5 Mark I camera with a 75-300mm lens for my video and bird photography. And this PRO lens is my dream to upgrade my camera lens. Overall I enjoyed watching your video. A big LIKE from me, a birder from Singapore. I'm a new subscriber here. 👍🔔
Thank you so much 🙏🏾🙏🏾 glad you enjoy the content
Great first impressions subbed to u too
I don't know the issue with the light, because the 100-400 is f6.3 at 400, the 300 with mc14 at 420 is f5.6. Not a huge difference. Only the sharpness is the difference but since every teleconverter decreases it it is even less. Not marginal, but less sharpness.
