Those knock off ICOM ham radios were VHF apparentely....
If the masseges are encrypted it serves the purpose....
So the Baofeng will tx/rx on both Ham and GMRS frequencies out of the box?
For me the F4HWN is the best and has the most advanced features
If you go from a nickel cadmium (1990's) technology to a lithium rechargeable battery, you have a much higher energy density and extra space around the battery. Put on a detonator, but label it a "battery temperature monitor", and fill that extra space around the battery with an explosive.
I have the UV5R in my car always and my main radio is ft5r with APRS
-You're right about the activation being sent to a group address, but triggering an explosion with just that would not give the Israelis the ability to choose the time. _Any group message_ would lead to an explosion. I suspect the Israelis *modified the pager's firmware* to trigger the explosive only when a specific text message came in. It would be interested to know what it was. -And the Israelis may have taken advantage of a pager-like feature with the ICOM IC-V82. To spare users having the squelch go off with any incoming signal, it can be configured to only open the squelch, meaning trigger the explosive, when a specific touchtone code came in on the listening frequency. -Some news sources are claiming that company in Hungary that licensed from Taiwan making and selling a copy of this pager actually made them in a factory with these new features. That's most unlikely. Setting up a factory to make an exact copy would have cost a lot of money and taken a great deal of time when all that was needed was buy this pager or a clone of it on the open market and modify it, altering the firmware and adding that tiny bit of explosive, perhaps concealed as you noted as typical electronic component.
I wonder which antenna you're using there and whether I could build it myself....
Excellent video. I found out the makes and models via Ringway. It looks the mystery has been solved of how they could trigger the radios. The thing is, would fakes have that feature? Old stock maybe? Used? Also, that a really good feature. I love the idea, and how it works.
1:38 you said the pager uses a single AAA alkaline battery, but the datasheet for the AR-924 pager says it is a lithium battery: Battery and Charging: Lithium battery, up to 85 days with 2.5 hours for full battery charge, USB-C charging
I have a UV-5R Plus on the way, should be here on Monday. I noticed that my UV-K5 (99) has the cutout for the center notch on the inside of the case, so it appears that it may take the larger battery from the 5R Plus without having to remove the tab.
I was quite surprised myself how things improved on 70cm, yeah the displays are a bit 10-1 in sunlight but otherwise i don’t mind them for the money.
Yes, interesting results. Thanks for watching Neil 👍
The best looking one is the K6/K5(8) with the power/volume knob of the 5R+ 😅
I do prefer the black knob on the K5 (8). Thanks for watching 👍
I believe terrorists have used this method before now to remotely detonate bombs, in fact not long after mobile phones were invented it not a new idea also in BBc series Trigger Point.
Thanks for watching Brian 👍
Nope
Well done Ben, thanks for your content. It is always a pleasure to be able to help where I can.
Thanks Richard! 👍
Great video again, and good to see you call out the faults such as screen brightness issues as you've been sent these. 👍
Thanks for watching, I'll also feed that back to Baofeng as they always ask for feedback.
hello, you are doing great work, thank you for that. let me ask you a question. i live in turkey and life is very expensive here. i have a choice to buy a walkie-talkie, do you think i should buy this model or quansheng uv k6?
or you can suggest another model. thanks :)
Hi, for a budget radio, the Baofeng K5 is pretty good on range. I'll hopefully do a similar test with the Quanshengs, but the Baofeng definitely has higher power output. Thanks for watching 👍
Interesting test, thanks for posting Ben
Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it 👍
Good results for hand held radios with stock antenna Ben! Do you think you could do another simillar video but this time using Baofeng Uv18 pro max that you reviewed not long ago and Uv17 with Gps in action please??? Thank you
I only have one UV-18 Pro, but I could possibly test the UV-17 Pro's as I have a pair of them. This video shows the GPS in use: ruclips.net/video/-yb-iM8AX8Y/видео.htmlsi=b29o_MbEs-y2AHRz Thanks for watching 👍
Great to see Richard on the video
Yep, big thank you to Richard for assisting with the video!
That is my favourite Dx spot awesome
Cheers Chris! Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed it!
Can I upload channel list and settings from egzumer save file to Nunu firmware radio? Or will this mess up things?
I think it should work just fine. Thanks for watching 👍
I'm also using that baofeng uv25, tested for long range and long modulation! DY2RYP from Philippines
Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed the video 👍
What do the F numbers in front of the frequences mean? On yours it says F2 for the upper and F6 for the lower and when you've typed the frequency the lower changes to F3. Also, the lower doesn't display AM. How do you change that?
Good question and well spotted! The F number, refers to which block or band of frequencies that frequency is in when in VFO mode. So the lowest frequencies 18Mhz to 107Mhz are in F1. F2 is 108 to 136, F3 is 137 to 173... and so on. (Hope that makes sense) The radio will only show AM if you're on Airband frequencies or if you have upgraded the firmware and can change it manually in the menu. Thanks for watching 👍
@@m7frs272 Aah yes, I see it now, thanks. It gets obvious when you import the radio in Chirp where you see all these groups of frequences at the bottom of the page.
i like the plus ,,, blue screen and looks ,,,,however it doesn't have usb charge lol ,,, which is a must have ,,,, in the end i just got a uvk5 99 for £10 problem solved haha
Thanks for watching. Just be aware that even on the models with the USB port, it's not recommended for regular charging.
same as the uv5rh pro max accept doesn't look as good lol
Same as the UV-25 and the new UVK5 plus as well. Thanks for watching 👍
theses are cheaper than the uvk 6/8 aswell lol
Depends where you purchase it from, but all great value 👍 Thanks again for watching!
As a noob to these radios, in simple terms please...what is this board doing for the radio?
Good question! Basically it changes the VHF FM broadcast receiver circuit (which usually receives from 87 to 108Mhz FM) into a HF (High frequency) shortwave receiver which can receiver from 100Khz to 30Mhz AM and USB/LSB (upper and lower sideband). Thanks for watching 👍
I'm a total noob and don't know where to start. You explain things very clearly. However, what if you don't have a port or airfield nearby? I really don't know what to google for to get exact radio frequenties I can listen to. I was hoping there would be an easy way to just scan for transmissions and lock in on them just like you can do with the FM radio stations. (F0)
It is possible to search for frequencies by setting the radio on a particular frequency when in VFO (frequency) mode, and pressing and holding the 'scan' key for a second. The radio will start to search and you can use the up/down arrows to set the direction. However, it is quite possible to miss activity frequencies, as unlikely FM broadcast your not necessarily looking for a continuous transmission. Depending on what country your in, you may find nationality used frequency for say GMRS/FRS or PMR 446 etc.. Hope that's helpful and thanks for watching 👍
@@m7frs272 Thanks again for explaining. I must say it's quite overwhelming to get into this because there are so many modes and abbreviations 😂 I'm reading up on many things but being able to ask some questions to experienced users helps a lot!
Well done, Ben. great attempt. There is no way I would have attempted SMCs with an iron, so you are a brave man, only ever done SMCs with hot air and solder paste.
Thanks Richard! I would have had no chance with the hot air. Those components are tiny! Thanks for watching 👍
Switch to narrow selectivity when they're piled up.
100% Thanks for watching 👍
Why replace the original firmware, why not use the original firmware? Is there a reason? Ron W4BIN
Hi Ron. Good question. Basically what makes this radio so popular (other that the very low cost) is the ability to be used with custom, third party firmware. This allows all sorts of possibilities including receiving a much wider range of the radio spectrum as we as much better AM airband reception. Lots of other features can be included. Some of which I've covered in other videos. Thanks for watching 👍 ruclips.net/p/PLXMfFSysu4iw5AGEOeiiKB09-MI5DWmyn&si=l5QObfN29hzKnoAd
This radio is able to receive calls as far as fire and ems right
That really depends on what country you are in and what frequencies/modes are used. Here in the UK it's a no, as our Emergency Services use Tetra Airwaves, which is highly encrypted. Thanks for watching 👍
Excellent test Sir, I've achieved ordered one today. 2E0BGB. Andre.
What is the point useing your time and money for this project, it is going to be absolute crap HF transceiver don't give me the old argument because I can, you must have so much time on your hands
Hi, thanks for watching and commenting. Firstly, the project is for HF reception and doesn't claim to turn the radio into an HF transceiver. I've done some testing, and for a cheap receiver project, it works well. Amateur radio is all about experimenting and learning, not necessarily about the most expensive equipment one can purchase. As an on-call firefighter, when I'm available for emergencies (which is on average 90 hours per week, on top of my normal 48hrs at work) I have to be within 4 minutes of the fire station, so projects like this are perfect when I'm stuck at home waiting for the pager to go off. Thanks again for supporting my channel. Ben, de M7FRS
Considering the tools you had to hand that was a decent little job of populating that board Ben, a lot wouldn’t go anywhere near doing this so very well done. 👏
Cheers Neil! Thanks for watching 👍
Oh my God (yes Him for real), the people he made are amazing! Kudos to the people who think this up. I am just again more shocked by these mods on the radio and the people involved. Tickled to life.
Thanks for watching 👍
caught out by the Old AliExpress switcheroo works again😆
Thanks for that, I will not be trying this, I'm not steady enough, thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching and commenting. Glad you enjoyed it 👍
Well done on the build, just a quick tip. When adding small R's and C's, tin only one pad first, then add the component, get it aligned on the first pad then solder the second, much easier. Similarly with the chip, solder pin 1 first, then in your case pin 9, get it all straight then solder the rest. 73's de Keith G0VDM
Thanks Keith, really appreciate the advice and thanks for watching 👍
Will one of those work on Guohetec PMR 171 man pack job as i find using the buttons for frequency control.
I've not personally tried it, but apparently it will work on the PMR 171 as well. Thanks for watching 👍
Interesting Ben, I’ll grab a couple just in case. Thanks
Cheers Neil, I have the Baofeng UV-K61 and a couple of 10w UV-K5's on the way 😉
Tried chirp no go so far
Hopefully it won't be long before it's supported on CHIRP. Thanks for watching 👍
Hi! thanks for this! does fagzi still make firmware to quangshen? many also thought good of his mods, and do you by any chance have the links to these firmwares you show here, i am an old grandad DXer and everything is getting a bit dodgier to do!! 73, Levi in Sweden
Nice, I was not aware of the top button removing unwanted signals, thanks!
Glad you it helpful, thanks for watching and commenting 👍
Does it require windows computer to update firmware?
I'm not sure if it can be done on other devices or not. It is best to drop TidRadio a message via their website. Thanks for watching 👍
The best vid I seen on the quansheng period, awesome job!
Thanks very much! I'm really glad you found it useful. Thanks for watching 👍
@@m7frs272 if I comment on a vid and the person takes the time to respond, in my mind that deserves a sub
They got it from my video. Maybe Baofeng didn't want it out but whatever. I said if im going to do a review on the thing id like to take a look at the secondary menu. They sent me the password. Not sure why but there we go
Excellent, thanks for sharing that! I emailed Baofeng asking what it was for and if they could share it with me, but they answered what it was for and didn't actually tell me the code! Thanks for watching. Also, I've subbed your channel, great content! Cheers, Ben de M7FRS
@@m7frs272 Thank you sir. I enjoy yours as well. Yeah I don't know, maybe we just talked to different people I guess.
do you now if you can use it with chirp yet
As far as I can see, it doesn't appear to be supported yet on CHIRP, but I'm sure it will soon. Thanks for watching 👍
