    A great radio, I love the fact that it stores 999 channels in 10 separate banks. I keep my local repeaters in bank 1 along with the MURS and GMRS channels. I use the other banks for places I visit. I add the MURS and GMRS channels to the bottom of each bank. There is alternate software available.

      And there is the Miklor CPS that is great it also lets you change the Barry White voice to something less disturbing

    I got one of them quite a while ago, but it didn't have the GPS included, though the vendor had been quite vague about whether it did or did not, and the photo prominently showed the embossed 'GPS' letters on it. Further, when I went to the Baofeng radio models page at the time, no UV-17 Pro was even listed. However, I do have the identical orange case, the dual-LED flashlight on the bottom, etc. The case top does indeed have the GPS letters embossed on it, but I pulled the lids, and there was no GPS module. I was, however impressed with the audio quality of the FM broadcast output, so I use it as a portable FM radio.

      Yes, I quickly realised when researching it that there is a different between the UV 17 and the UV 17 Pro GPS although, like you say, it's not always that clear and the GPS logo is on the non GPS version as well! (No idea why they did that?) The noticeable difference is the screen type, as the Pro GPS version has the black display and the non GPS version has the light blue. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍

    I'm totally new to radios and this was a really helpful video, especially about the GPS functionality, the manual is awful especially for someone completely new to this (I'm currently studying for the foundation licence) Is there a way to store names instead of 'Contact 1' ? Could you possibly do a demo on how to do the channel matching that is advertised with these? I've got a pair of these and some older no screen baofengs that just have a channel selctor knob and I'd like to be able to communicate across them all.

    The GPS seems to work quite well for such a cheap device, I’ll maybe grab one of these in the future once i get caught up a bit. Thanks ben

      Thanks for watching Brian. Unfortunately it won't work over the repeater apparently.

      Yes, this is one great radio for what it cost. Very underrated for no reason! Airband receive is very good!

    I would like to see a comparison table of features for the Chinese radios. I lose track.

    I bought my uv 17 pro gps a few weeks ago. Nice full-featured radio but the AM air receive is terrible. Is anyone else having the same issue?

    can you set a "home" location and then work out where you are relative to that? Eg say you go on a hike, you can set your start position.

    • @m7frs272
      @m7frs272  3 месяца назад

      Interesting question! I guess the simple answer would be no, however if you have 2 radios then you could send the position to each other (even if you have them together in the same location) then when you get home and inspect the positions, as long as the GPS has updated for your home, then it will probably do what you're asking. (Basically that's how I did it in my video, but didn't show that) Hope that made some sense and thanks for watching 👍

    Is this good for a beginner? Would i have to download anything out the box?if so is there any other radio out there that doesn't require ito download anything...

    • @m7frs272
      @m7frs272  3 месяца назад

      No need to download anything or update firmware etc.. The only thing required would be to program it with your desired frequencies/channels, which can be done either manually or by computer software. Thanks for watching 👍

    This isn't proper APRS is it? This is just Baofeng's own version? I like everything about it and would probably buy one if it actually does real APRS. Otherwise I'll stick to my FT-2DR

    • @m7frs272
      @m7frs272  5 месяцев назад +2

      Unfortunately, no, it doesn't support APRS. Thanks for watching 👍

    Has anyone tested the actual effective range of these? Wonder how they go over line of sight and well as hilly terrain?

    • @D4.4
      @D4.4 4 месяца назад +1

      It depends on a lot of factors but if the conditions are right you can get 10+ km out of them.

    • @robinloucks1351

      VHF and UHF are line of sight frequencies.

    This may be a stupid question, but can you listen to am fm radio on these as well? Like in a pinch could you play music or weather reports through it?

      Oh, nevermind, I hadn’t watched far enough. I’ll leave up the comment for the algorithm. I’m so confused about legality of these things though. I live in the states and just want a good walkie talkie for me and my fiancee camping for safety and fun, and the more bonus features I can get on top of that the better. I figured the gps function was good for safety.

      I believe it can only be done manually or requested remotely, not automatically unfortunately. Thanks for watching 👍

    it isn't a gps it just tells how far one unit is from, you have to by two (BAOFENG UV-17Pro GPS Air Band Walkie Talkie Six Bands Receive Tri-Bands) the other, is that right???? Earsier to triangulate really

    • @m7frs272
      @m7frs272  3 месяца назад +1

      No, it has full (and very accurate) GPS positioning. Even with one unit you can pinpoint your position to within a metre.
