Just a couple of points of interest: No licence is required to transmit in an emergency situation - therefore anyone on board can call for help regardless of whether they have a licence or not - handy if the skipper & licence holder is incapacitated; and you don't need a licence to listen to broadcasts intended for general reception - so other mayday calls, pan-pan calls or notices to mariners etc are fine to listen to, but not ship to ship or 1:1 traffic or anything not directly intended for the recipient.

Yeah that's true, although I maybe didn't make it that clear in the video, that it's the vessel/boat/ship etc that had the licence (unless in the case of a ships portable license) so as long as someone on board hold the short range certificate (or authority to operate) then anyone can use the equipment under direct supervision.

@@m7frs272 but in an Emergency, when life and limb is a stake... No license is required to TX.

If you have the UK short range certificate, how can you use it abroad? For example, if you go to Europe and take a boat through their canals does your UK license cover you, do you need an international license, or do you need one license per country?

Some good info there ben, I’m guessing my dad’s license is well out of date. 😂
