Fugue in F minor (N. Canzano)
The first five notes of the subject of this fugue were given to me by an audience during a lecture on which I improvised a fugue on these notes. This is not a written down improvisation, but a re-working of that experience.

A condensed version of a lecture I have given at Juilliard and the University of Michigan, this video aims to show aspiring baroque improvisers a very simple and easy-to-memorize structure upon which they can build entire improvisations and compositions, which is equivalent to a specific iteration of the musical "sentence" from your theory classes. I would very interested in a more extensive a kind of "paint by number" approach that provides a clear, reproducible pathway with practice points that can be assembled into a cohesive whole for improvisational use. Love your channel.
Demo 1 in C major is such a happy piece of music. It tickles me the right way.
Hey Nicola, ive tried replying to Derek David’s reply to me several times now, and every time RUclips auto filters it. Please could you allow it on the ‘held for review’ comments section of your RUclips studio please!
Hey, I'm not sure I see this actually. I am usually notified of such comments, but if I go to notifications or I go to comments I don't see any awaiting review...! I've also never had this happen, but I want to help, do you have any more specific instructions?
@ ah no worries :(
Actually insane god damn 👏🤯 huge congrats what a skill
Thanks, friend, for always listening and giving comments. Really appreciate the kind words...
SO lovely!!! Thank you for posting! And looking forward to your concert in Newburyport on Dec. 22nd!
Oh thanks very much, Janet! I look forward to meeting you! :)
This is so great, Nico! I’m listening back again and again. I can recognise many strategies you show in the lessons applied here… and the way you dealt with this apparent awful subject is really impressive: as soon as the countersubject enters it doesn’t sound weird anymore… also the later entries with the flowing countersubject sound amazing… chapeau!
I can’t tell you how happy this makes me, Roberto. Thanks so much for the multiple listens and the nice words. I’m especially happy things we’ve discussed are clear and you think it’s convincing!! It’s not a science, as much as we’d like to make it that way, and so this kind of confirmation is so valuable.
Wow this is great
I really appreciate that!! Thank you!
F*cking awesome subject. Great writing (as always), Maestro.
Hah, thanks Derek. Thanks for listening. Don't you still owe me an email with your recent performance of the violin piece?
Agreed! Love your work too Derek

@@derekdavid1 not personally but i have commented on your ‘kaddish’ string quartet on my music account ‘joshuamusic02’, and that quartet has highly inspired my own string quartet ive been writing for uni this term
Great fugue! The subject given to you is admittedly awkward / tonally ambiguous (augmented triad? I wished to hear C-F instead of C-E). But somehow you made it feel natural...
Liking it more and more with each listen
Oh my well thanks for listening to it multiple times!!
this is unreal!!!!
the top voice at 3:19 is really good
Lol, yes, thanks for that ;). Same with the 7 chord on D-flat a few bars later.
Another beautiful fugue! Really like the paintings as well, big fan of Vermeer.
Thanks for always listening! Thanks for the compliment! I also love Vermeer...! I just searched for "sad baroque paintings" lol...
❤ charming!

@@derekdavid1 thanks Maestro :D

A pleasure to listen to! Great composition and idea.
Thanks for listening! ❤ appreciate the compliment too :)
amazing re-interpretation of just that short jingle! love how much material you can squeeze out of just those short few notes
Variations on a theme...
@d33j4ybf ive actually hardly listened to this format! i mostly stick to bach forms like preludes, fugues, convertos etc tho i guess the goldber vars are exactly that. cant quite get into it personally, not sure why tho
That was the challenge, I appreciate that very much…! I’ve been having fun lately trying to take very short non-tonal collections of notes and wrestle them into a baroque shape…
lovely
Thank you! Thanks for the listen!
Beautifully played! I see you have Caplin's new cadence book. I started reading it, but I'm not sure how to use the knowledge. It usually takes me 3 or so years between learning about something initially and getting to the point to find the question that I know the answer to.
Thanks for listening! Yes it’s a good reference book…I thought it would be something a bit different, frankly…
Awesome and fantastic as always
Hey thanks for the listen and vote of confidence!
Really lovely little piece beautifully played--but more than that, the instrument sounds gorgeous! Great recording!
Thanks for listening, really appreciate it! The harpsichord is new: A Mietke copy built by Yves and Benoît Beaupré in Montréal. It was an unseasonably humid morning which the harpsichord likes. Part of the reason I chose to record it then!
ROFL!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes.
❤👏👏👏
Well thank you!! <3 <3
Haha the ending 😂, awesome Nicola!
Hah, it's a bit hard to recognize, isn't it?
I don't recognize it, but I'm sure some people will. Curious what it is :)

Very beautiful! The second part reminds me of the joyful fugue from BWV 1061 at times
Thanks so much for listening and for the kind compliment!
Progressive (Ba)rock!
What an amazing, energetic and beautiful composition Nicola, the performance too ofcourse! Loved the harmonies and especially how you played with the alternating rhythms. A true classic imo. Maybe one tip of advice, you probably don't really care anyway hehe ;) The format in which you are uploading makes it really hard to follow the score when using a small screen (phone for example). I think a lot of people would appreciate it if you'd present only two systems for example. It's a little bit more work with the video editing, but you'll get used to it fast.
Oh my thanks so much for the beautiful words!! And I very much appreciate the advice…I will make several more pictures of the score and zoom in more, good idea. I made the images high resolution so they could be zoomed in on or stretched but that doesn’t seem to work for some reason…
@@parallelfifths2824I can view them perfectly well, but I need to look carefully. Here is how I do it: I have a template in paint that fits the youtube format (1920×1080). I take screenshots of my scores in pdf and paste them in this frame, usually two systems per shot.
Love the chromatic "breakdown" at the end each section!
Hah! Thanks! You know, I had a harpsichord teacher who used to refer to those kinds of moments with the same word. We paid special attention to the ones that happen at the ends of sections in Frescobaldi, for example. He used the metaphor that you're driving on the highway and all of the parts of your car start falling off...! It stuck with me.
Love the rhythms!
Thanks so much! That was the experiment....
More great work.
Thanks, Timothy. Kind of you, as always, to return to my music. I'm flattered.
I just realized that BWV 846 uses an ASTB vocal entry :0
I really enjoyed the straightforward approach and practical insights. You’re good at relaying this information, so thanks for sharing it!
Really glad it was helpful for you! :)
Insane that this is an improvisation. Mind-blowing!
Practice, like everything else! Thanks for watching and for the compliment :).
Interesting...
Hey, this is very helpful! But can you teach how to improvise counterpoint, because i can't really do this if i don't know how to improvise counterpoint.
Check out the video on passing tones...! This is a good start.
@@parallelfifths2824 Oh ok, but after that, how could i learn more? I'm studying Handel's exercises for princess Anna and i'm going to later study Furno's partimento treatise, is that how can i improvise like the way thst is shown here?
@@L_S_Barros Assuming you already have keyboard fluency, you first need to understand how to organize harmonies in a logical way, and build this foundation of a phrase reliably. Then you need a theory of how to decorate harmonies and a practice regimen for these "diminutions". On top of that you need to make sure your melodies/decorations come out meaningfully, follow from one another, and are not simply random tricks, so you need to study composition. And on top of all of this a good series of etudes to get there...! So until my book comes out in 30 years, you should find a teacher who knows what to do ! The resources for this kind of thing are slim and surface-level.
@@L_S_Barros Play lots of continuo, play lots of repertoire, write a huge amount of music, improvise every day.
The left hand is very similar to Goldberg Var No.1. Nice corrente, really haven't listened something closer to Bach.
Well thanks very much, I'll take that compliment and run!
Hi Nico, I'm so glad I stumbled upon your channel. Which notation software are you using here?
Hey there, glad to have you here! I use Finale for composition, but in my videos for the handwritten stuff I use ProCreate.
music so joyful and so tender - hits right in the heart - such high level of craft all around
Oh my gosh...thanks, Carl. This absolutely made my day 🥲
i do sometimes fear i talk to people in a discursive, confusing and parenthetical manner and a lot of how I play is further towards the tasteless end of your scale - so that checks out i guess! That being said, it always feels very different to actually play with a soloist instead of practicing the part, and I somehow end up playing something completely different.
The thing that's tasteless here is mostly that I'm doing so much stuff. It's possible to 'noddle' a bit with your right hand when you're trying to fill in a gap, or add some rhythmic life to things, but if you are noodling in the domain of the melodic instrument, you're really erring.
A Purcell style Ouverture...bravo!!!!
Thank you so much !
