1950's Delta Rockwell 1460 Lathe Restoration: Part 2 of 3
Просмотров 2133 месяца назад
Welcome back! In this video I clean the parts, strip the paint, clean the parts, sandblast, clean the parts, polish, clean again, paint. The motor was so bad, evidence of a mouse or some small animal living in it but luckily none of the windings or wires were damaged. Enjoy!

    Hey Brother. Those pulleys are pot metal. That link belt will wear them out eventually and those CBL-409 head stock pulleys are not cheap, when you can find them. I'd highly recommending getting a normal V-Belt. Beautiful restoration!

      @ChristopherTrybus oh ok well I'm a little confused because my rooster does this when I'm calling them he doesn't let them feed from my hand he doesn't let them come to me so I thought it was his way of telling them u better not lol he knows which one I'm calling and quickly gets in-between he's a real pain in my but lol he is buff orp and well around 10 pounds with red eyes so I don't argue with him lol

    Looks good. Is the original motor on your lathe three phase? I commented on your previous videos that I have the same model lathe, but mine is 120 vac single phase. VFDs are typically used in this sort of application to run a three phase motor from single phase power; there are VFDs that work with single phase motors, but they're pretty uncommon.

    • @ChristopherTrybus
      @ChristopherTrybus 2 месяца назад

      Thanks, thanks for watching. I’m not sure if the original is three phase. I do know it came from a school wood shop and then sat for a long time. It’s possible someone swapped the motors out seeing as getting three phase to run could be challenging. Most of these lathes that I’ve seen have single phase. I would have upgraded to three phase or a 3-5 hp single phase at some point for more power to handle larger pieces as my skills progress.

    Good work! I have the exact same lathe, inherited from my dad. It was repainted that industrial green that was popular in the 1950s but I can live with that, since it's otherwise in good shape and fortunately didn't require any restoration. 🙂

      Thanks for sharing. I too inherited a good deal of vintage tools, they were my great grandfathers. He was a union carpenter and machinist. Unfortunately a lathe was one of the only machines he didn’t own but he did have the tools. I owe it to him for having handed down some really quality tools I still use just about every day for my own work. Every time I dive into the massive tool chest I find something new that I didn’t notice before. This lathe came from a school woodshop and it sat for a good number of years until I got it. I plan to use it to earn my living and I hope to be able to pass it on to my great grandchildren someday. Hopefully this video was worth a subscribe, it encourages me to share more projects! Thanks for watching, the new parts are coming in and I’ll be putting everything back together soon.

      @@ChristopherTrybus Mine was a school woodshop machine as well. My dad was the high school's industrial arts teacher in my home town and he purchased the lathe new for the school, I think sometime in the late 1940s. Over time it was replaced by newer lathes and it ended up stored away in a back room, and when my dad retired the school let him have it. I haven't done very much with it, but now that I'm retired myself I hope to put it to greater use. Speaking of inherited tools, if you haven't already you should check out Inheritance Machining's channel. He has a full machine shop he inherited from his grandfather and he produces some very good videos.

    Nicely done! Getting my machine back up and running to do a bunch of vinyl work for my boat, and make a replacement holder for my Craftsman screwdriver set - the ancient vinyl cover has torn, letting the screwdrivers run amok in my tool case! Side question ... what camera(s) are you using? Great clarity in the video.

      Thanks for watching! I have a few ideas for a tool roll too, just need the time to get started. I also have an old lab stool that needs a reupholster and I want to do it in leather. I’d love a leather machine but it was definitely motivating to know that a normal sewing machine could handle leather like this. As for the camera, thanks, it’s just an iPhone 13, nothing special.

    Да задумка хорошая. Но есть нюансы. К столешнице вы зря приклеили бруски когда дерево начнет сохнуть или на оборот наберать влажность то не будет место куда может будет дерево двигаться и он лопнит. И при склейки столешницы вы не правильно приклеили ламели , годовые кольца в одну сторону смотрят.это значит столешницу начнёт выгинать. На будущее соблюдайте правила склейки столешницы. Мы все когда-то совершаем ошибки.

    How are you feeling about the height of the seats? Any recommendations?

    • @ChristopherTrybus
      @ChristopherTrybus 9 месяцев назад

      Seats are really fun part of the build customizing to how you like to use the canoe. For me I prefer to kneel and paddle or sit on the edge of the seat with my leg(s) tucked under, so being able to move around easily without getting my feet hung up was a real consideration. I went with 12" from the hull to top of the seat and it worked. As far as overall balance it also depends on the shape of the hull and your centers of gravity. So if you could imagine an extreme example, it be something like having seats attached directly to the gunwales on a narrow canoe with a round bottom hull. This may be top heavy for a paddler making it less maneuverable. Being comfortable, having the freedom to move around, and being able to adapt to water condtions is important to me. But whatever works for you!
