Super interesting (and completely understandable) to hear your thoughts on Perth, as a young performing arts worker who lives here! I’ve loved growing up in Perth, however I do agree it’s probably not the easiest or most exciting city to navigate as a visitor. Also working in this industry… well, let’s just say the majority of people study here, and then very swiftly move over east to pursue better work prospects. I’m still in WA for the time being, however I do feel like one day I may have to leave if I want to keep pursuing a serious career in the arts. It’s a bit hard to make a living in this industry in this rather small city where everyone knows everyone, and the opportunities can be so limited.

Fantastic. You’re helping me better my work so much and giving me tips that I can use when working on shows. But I was wondering what type of wire you use for your mic rigs. I mainly do school shows so we don’t have that much time to prep but using wire would help a lot

This is terrific! I’m a sound tech in Chicago, and this is exactly the kind of thing I wish I had seen before my first pro production. Sound for theatre is such a weird thing, so happy to see someone sharing how we actually do it. The terminology difference is interesting to me. In the USA, we would say SR (stage right) and SL (stage left) rather than PS and OP. Do you use the terms A1 for the mixer and A2 for the radio tech? Or is that also a country-specific thing?

Fantastic breakdown. I've worked in the industry for years myself and still find it interesting to see how other sections of the arts, or even just other people do things. The only thing I would comment on is that, at least in this script in particular, the difference in colours for different types of cues isn't very friendly for those who are colour-blind. I've had to be more deliberate as of late with making colours very distinctly different and even using reference palettes as more and more people have mentioned this to me as a struggle they've had with my own tech scripts. Lovely video though! Keen to see more.

Monique, I just discovered your channel, and I am LOVING these videos and the look into what it takes to put on POTO. Thank you! I did have one question though. Does the Phantom's mask introduce any complication in micing the performer? I would imagine that the mask has to be set off from the performer's actual skin around the cheek and jaw so as not to rub and create a sound that the mic picks up. Is that an issue, or one that I dreamed up in my mind? Thank you again for the amazing look inside the production. Subscribed!

Nice video. If you can forgive a small suggestion from Durham , England. I’m a retired Paediatrician/Neonatologist and sometime microphone technician. Apart from the medical clear membranes tegaderm and the like which work great, I have another tape for the most precious IVs in neonates and children. Especially if they are moving around. Hypafix. It’s not expensive but sticks brilliantly. Alcohol also helps get it off. It’s white but will take make up on top! By the way some kids cry if you are removing tegaderm. If you pull it out sideways and lengthways looking to stretch it like a pizza it breaks the adhesion and is pain free ti remove

Ditto! I'm part of house crew and I often run lights for these kinds of shows, I would love to have this kind of documentation! I greatly appreciate you sharing this knowlege so performers/designers can write better scripts for technicians.

As you well know Tech-wear is predominantly black, so just for a bit of fun during a run there would be a competition amongst the crew voted on by selected cast member(s) to whom wore the loudest/ brightly coloured or ugliest shirt! Back in the day it was traditionally called “loud shirt day” and the winning crew member would mostly win bragging rights to poor fashion or wardrobe choice. 😅😆 I’ve worked as a Mech, Prop-tech and LX tech internationally for many years and it’s a tradition predominantly found in Australia 🇦🇺 and NewZealand 🇳🇿
