    Here's my take, having owned the Z7 II and now ownig the Z8, I'd say the Z7 II is really the better camera if you're talking just landscapes. IQ is a bit better particularly if you have to shoot at higher ISOs (although this is not usually the case for most landscape photographers or shots). But when I compared my shots between the two cameras I feel that the Z7 II just has that slight edge, particularly at lower ISOs in terms of dynamic range. Now whether that really is of significance, probably not, but if I had to choose one or the other for my landscapes, I'd probably be inclined to go for my Z7 II, partially because it's also smaller and lighter and pretty much AF speed and video are irrelevant for landscapes. So if you're considering one, I'd get the Z7 II for $2300 as that's practically a steal IMO. If you shoot various genres, the Z8 may be a better option as it is a more well-rounded camera that is suited to many genres (particularly sports and wildlife) but the Z7 II I feel it's specialty IS landscapes.

    • @willchaneyphoto
      @willchaneyphoto 9 дней назад

      That’s a great analysis. Battery life is also slightly longer on the Z7II. It only lacks in missing pixel shift shooting which is hit or miss depending on the scene. I suspect that will come with the Z7III. Great thoughts since I didn’t go very deep into talking about alternatives other than some surface level specs.

    • @willchaneyphoto
      @willchaneyphoto 9 дней назад

      I’m glad I didn’t. the Z8s autofocus is still way ahead of the Z6III which was an area I was looking for improvement over my Z6. I like having the dedicated bird mode and faster overall auto focusing. I’ll have a video in two weeks covering the Z6 III and Z8. That said the Z6 III is still a great camera.

    Hey there, i just traded my Zf in for the Z6iii for the better ergonomics. But… though i am not a big video guy, i just need an all a rounder camera for wildlife (flying, running, and stills) and for MAINLY landscape. I am not a professional, but i like good quality images so i can print and post on social media. Will this Z6iii (even though so many people say DR is bad) would it be good for a wildlife, nature, and MAINLY landscape camera (mainly landscape)? I don’t have a big budget, just want a camera that is great for what i do

    • @willchaneyphoto
      @willchaneyphoto 10 дней назад

      I think it’s a great fit then. I started on a Z6 and still use it as a secondary. The III still lacks a bit in autofocus to the Z8. But that won’t stop you from still getting great shots of animals. I do wish it had dedicated Bird mode in the autofocus, but Auto mode is supposed to still have it utilized. I haven’t played with one long enough to know the DR issues I keep hearing discussed. My gut says it’s probably not really as big of a deal as it’s being made out to be. Myself included like to give some of the areas of improvement or flaws in the cameras, but getting your lighting right, composition, and editing down will carry you a lot further than the camera will in a lot of circumstances. The camera is just one piece of the puzzle.

    Nice video, WillChaney!! I concur- I love my Z8 and lenses. I especially love: 1. Class leading dynamic range 2. Base ISO 64 3. Starlight 4. Auto focus on infinity 5. Built in intervalometer 6. Image quality and sharpness 7. Auto WB is always spot on. Anyone looking to get an all around best mirrorless camera, should def consider the Z8.

    How much better is a z6ii than a d5600

    • @willchaneyphoto
      @willchaneyphoto 12 дней назад

      What type of photography do you do? I can try to tailor an answer. My first camera was a d3200 before going to the Z6. I got great photos with the d3200 but it lacked a lot of the features that you’ll get going to a Z6 II in the same way from the d5600. Biggest differences I can think of is you’ll get a faster processor which means better autofocus and faster shooting speeds. More autofocus points on the magnitude of 10x more. A full frame sensor at 24MP which is awesome for low light shooting. And full frame helps you take more advantage of the field of view on your lens since there’s not a 1.5x crop factor from the APS-c sensor. I think the main point is it opens up a lot more advantages which in turn makes it a better camera, however it’s only better if you understand the changes, how it effects the photos your taking, and know how to take advantage of it.

    • @willchaneyphoto
      @willchaneyphoto 16 дней назад

      That’s a tough one. The Z6 series I think have the advantage for low light shooting with being full frame and lower MP. However, they all are great. I think the camera technology is overall so good at this point that there are technical differences, but all of them are going to create great photos for astrophotography.

    • @willchaneyphoto
      @willchaneyphoto 25 дней назад

      Almost like I planned it ;) It might not be a bad idea to setup some different shooting modes to easily switch to if you have some different ones you want to try. I'd recommend dialing in the exposure you want first to get the right amount of trailing, keep your ISO at 64 or 100, and then if adjust your aperture as needed if you are over or underexposed. My opinion is it's better to be just slightly underexposed if you were to go one direction since some of the fireworks will be brighter than others and with the dynamic range on the camera, you should still be able to pull out shadows if you need to.

    I wonder whether you had any issues related to heat distortion / heat haze and bad air quality? All of them negatively impact the image quality in a substantial way. I am in discussion with other nature photographers and they too experienced similar issues.

    • @willchaneyphoto
      @willchaneyphoto 25 дней назад

      It wasn’t super hot yet in Texas yet but there was definitely some coming off of the heat on the runway. That will be an issue with any telephoto lens though as it’s an atmospheric effect and not something actually caused by the lens. It has to do with different densities in the air caused by the heat from the ground mixing with the cooler layer above. It’s going to be noticeable when taking images that are looking across the ground layer. But shouldn’t affect an image of a bird in flight or airplane that’s well off the ground. Concrete/asphalt will definitely be the worst culprit to cause it.

    Just looking at the Z8 and doing some research. Wonder if anyone with a Z8 on firmware 2 tried to use this pixel shift technique to capture the Total Solar Eclipse back in April? I shot it with a D850 but, after learning about the Z8 and pixel shift, wondering what 'could have been' .....

      i don’t think the 2.0 firmware update was out prior to the eclipse.

    Greatly helpful video, if only I could cut through the irritating background noise - none of which can be removed by changing the iso 😂

    I bundled that with my Z6II when I changed ecosystems in Dec 2022. It now stays on my Zf most of the time. It is a fantastic lens!!

      Nice! What do you typically keep on the Z6II?

    I have a Z9 after having a D500. I had a vertical grip on the D500 and ending up preferring to use it with the grip since I found that I often needed it but didn’t have it with me. So I left it on. It was heavy with the grip. So I bought the Z9 and I love the versatility and the fact that I have never had a battery issue as it lasts forever. I shoot a lot of wildlife and have long lenses, including the 800z. I find the weight of the Z9 and its size is actually a plus using long lenses. I think the Z8 with the grip is actually larger and heavier than the Z9. However, it’s really a matter of what type of shooting you do. If I was a landscape photographer I would prefer the Z8. I do find that when I shoot photos of the kids or family events with my 24-70 or the 70-200, the weight of the Z9 becomes quite noticeable after a while. I am waiting for Nikon to upgrade the Z9. Maybe a global shutter and even better performance. If they offer one without a built-in vertical grip I may go for that to save the weight for when I don’t need to shoot vertically. It certainly is great to have two outstanding cameras, the Z8 and Z9, to choose from.

    This is a fantastic all-around lens, following Nikkor tradition. It's extra reach requires the larger barrel than its 24-70 sibling It's not marketed as a cine lens, and as such, its focus breathing is minimal. It also has a function ring that can be configured as a non-click aperture control. For a wider, faster lens, there are so many third party that are lightweight and inexpensive.

      I really like it! I felt like it had more focus breathing than the 17-28mm when I tested that one. Maybe there’s a better way to test that than just a visual of going between focus points that are drastically separated by distance like I used in this review?

    Nice review my favorite Nikon z lens. It can do everything. Ultimate travel lens if you still want S line quality photos.

    Great lens. Paired with the 14-24 is a bit heavy for lugging up hills and mountains but it is too hard to choose between them so I take both.

      I’m with you on that too. It definitely makes my backpack heavier for travel, but I love them both.
