Great I did not think about this option! But for Astro photo it’s a no go :( It seems 1sec+ it’s disabled… Nikon should allows it if you on purpose need this… Astro photo + tracking mount
So pixel shift is going to be for those times when it's not a high dynamic range scene and your histogram looks good. Also, depth of field will be an issue so it has to be a scene where you can use the hyper focal distance and have everything in focus. Which also means you'll be using a wide angle lens to have these conditions. But can you imagine how large the file would be if you manually bracket the shots taking a series of pixel shift at 3 different exposures and then repeat this by manually focus stacking. I don't even know how many photos you'd have to take but I'm thinking around 12 sets of pixel shift images. That would be around 384 photos to create one gigantic image. I don't think my computer can handle meeting one set of 32 images let alone how large the file would be with all the others. My computer doesn't even have the space for the ram needed for that. 64 gb of ram is the max and I have 32 gb in it now.
For what I understand it not align the image, so is only for very static object, not like you mention for night photography (es multi shoot for reduce noise) hope for future update with new function. Thanks for the review.
Just looking at the Z8 and doing some research. Wonder if anyone with a Z8 on firmware 2 tried to use this pixel shift technique to capture the Total Solar Eclipse back in April? I shot it with a D850 but, after learning about the Z8 and pixel shift, wondering what 'could have been' .....
I was messing with it last night and when I went into edit mode they went to a cropped image. Not sure why in the video they didn’t show as cropped, but based on the pixels LR was showing, it was definitely doing something weird.
As mentioned LR does not yet support the z8 pixel shift merged files correctly, but PS does already. So as a workaround for now, plan on using PS to convert the merged files into something native.
4:27 wait..what? you cannot use flash/strobes with Pixel Shift? that limits its usefulness in product photography where strobes are used. even the OM-1 allows up to 1/100s (still a bit slow, but at least it's an option)
That’s directly out of their documentation. I’ve not really used flashes or strobes, but my guess would be that it has something to do with the recycle time on flashes.
@@willchaneyphoto it's a shame ...but then i just checked that even Canon/Panasonic/Leica has the same limitation with their version of Pixel Shift...which i found a bit odd. As for the limitation due to strobe recycle time, Nikon can put interval option between shots which is exactly what they had on focus shift to compensate for the slow recycle time of strobe.
@@bubuli kind of makes it more interesting then because there is an option to have a delay between each shot. Which if it could account for the recycle, why not trigger a flash.
@@markr3926 so the verbiage says “optional flash units will not fire”. Maybe there’s something I’m missing, I’d love to learn if I’m wrong. What you said makes sense to me though that it would work with the delays.
Nice work here Will. Looks good on monitor, too bad social media compression algorithms will null pixel shift results. But being able to crop will still be great.
Actually, they deliver what they say they deliver. Given you use the technique in the right way for the right scenario. The results will be less noise, better colour and detail. It may be you just don't need these results.
Wrong. Pixel shift can fire flash. That is what the interval between each shot setting is for. Zero value will not fire flash. Any positive value will fire the flash but the value must allow time for the flash to recycle. So if flash is on full power use a bigger interval between each frame. If it is on lower power then you can use a 1 or 2 second interval. Always worth learning the information properly before telling people the wrong info, which is really and I can’t emphasise this enough….unhelpful.
Yes, you’re right. I was not aware I was looking at the manual for the Zf and thought I was on the Z8 manual. Mistakes happen and I will be updating the video to match.
@@willchaneyphotoFair enough. When video is updated you should update the comments too and remove mine as it will then be irrelevant. Assume you are able to do that or should I remove it. Would be silly to leave it there
do you know of any caveats for using flash with PS? like, does it have to be in manual mode? is TTL flash supported or should also be in manual? any limitations to shutter speed? reason i'm asking is that in a forum in FredMiranda the Z8 owner said that flash isn't firing in PS mode. my interest is that i have a Z9 (which hopefully gets this feature in a future FW update) and have been looking forward to this feature for a looong time.
@@bubuliI am not aware of any such caveats. My test, with a Z8 firmware 2.0 proved the flash fired. I was in manual mode both camera and flash (profoto B10’s). If I get a chance I will perform a test with TTL, can’t see it not working to be fair in TTL but will test when I get a moment. Re shutter speed I was at 1/200th as normal. So think the shutter speed range is the same as no pixel shift shooting.
After recently purchasing the Z8, I learned that the raw file format it produces is not supported on Apple IOS devices. Since i edit my photos on my iPad, this makes the camera much less attractive to me. I will be attempting to return it for a refund.
@@abaddonski I have tried to edit with both the Apple Photo app and Lightroom mobile on my iPad. I have since learned that ON1 Photo Raw does support Z8 raw files on my iPad, so I may keep the Z8 after all. Perhaps in time the Apple app will support Z8 raw photos.

Thanks for the great video. PS you can compare images at once by selecting both and hitting 'c' button in LR :)
Thanks!! Ya I normally do that and forgot to do it in this one for some reason ha
im planning on using it for lunar photos. mega crops . I havent started testing it yet. But pixel density looks promising.
I’m really interested in trying this out next weekend with the full moon.

I agree, I think the stars moving will affect it too much, but I think it could be used for enhancing any foreground subjects.
can a flash be used while taking pixel shift shooting shots?
Yes it can. You just need to set your interval long enough so that the flash has time to charge between shots.

i don’t think the 2.0 firmware update was out prior to the eclipse.
Sorry, but I think it's better to show the photos side by side to see the differences and then zoom in on the photos.
Agreed, I usually do in my other videos and forgot to do it in this one.
How come your nefx files are not being cropped after importing to Lightroom?

Good to know! I had not yet tried pulling them into PS. I did read another work around is to export as a TIFF from from NX.

You can use flash with pixel shift. The manual does not say you can’t. Thats what the interval is for. I’ve done it.

Cameras now are to high tech and most of it you don't need , this is a perfect example of something that isn't needed in photography.
914MB for a "single" image Jesus Christ thats a lot of pixels

That’s not the intended use. A lot of photographers print their work and print quite large format.
Correct- but many people like to put their work online, so something to keep in mind.
I hate these pixelshift videos, they promise something that they never deliver
