    The one thing that I MUST change in My Nikon Z cameras is,, in the Z8,,, "f6 RELEASE BUTTON TO USE DIAL" ""TURN IT ON"" then (WHEN YOU TOUCH ANY '"FN"BUTTON,, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO HOLD IT DOWN TILL YOU ARE DONE) push the "FN" button, change the settings then touch any button to finish the change!!!!!!!!!!! OMG this Video Is One Of The Best Tutorials !!!!!!!! I am going to share this with a number of My friends !!!!!!!! Glad I Found You "KIERAN HAYES" :) :) :)

      Hi John, thanks a million for that and yes one of the things I love about photography is how we all set up our gear differently. It's how customisable cameras are now is both a blessing and a disaster at times especially when you take it out of the box for the first time :-) Thanks again for watching and for the insights also.

    I opted to read the transcript. I agree with some of your choices. I use a Z9 but I was curious. I use 4 shooting banks. 1 is set up for people, 2, is birding 3 is more about landscapes, and 4 is manual.
    Switching off subject detect is something I can do via Fn 2 which is set so I can swap focus modes (hold and rotate the dial) Go to one of the old DSLR ‘dynamic area’ modes. This drops subject detect. You can switch back anytime. I don’t use the lower left button because it is in a tricky spot so it usually involves taking my eye away from the viewfinder (no time for that!)

    Setting your SD to be backup, is going to slow the camera down to the speed of the SD card. If you want the benefits of the speed and buffers, get a fast CF Express B card and only use SD for Overflow.

    • @kieranhayesphotography
      @kieranhayesphotography  Год назад +12

      Hi Mark, tbh I have never had that issue and while my SD cards top out at 300mbs, I would never personally come across that issue, I also dont shoot in high fps normally. For me card redundancy is always going to be far more important than buffers or transfer speeds. The commercial shoots I work on costs thousands to host so depending on a single card is sheer madness for me and even my insurance company wouldnt cover me for that. Not saying it's wrong to set it as overflow just the way I set up my camera. Everyone uses theirs differently but as the Z8 is a pro body I would presume redundancy would be a very high priority for most people. Thanks for watching and appreciate the input and enjoy the Z8 👍

    Don’t know if mentioned already.
    To change focus modes there is a dedicated button on the FRONT of the camera to do so. It’s on the bottom right side of facing the Z8.
    Saves a custom function setting.

    • @kieranhayesphotography
      @kieranhayesphotography  Год назад +3

      Hi Steve, thanks and ya I know about that one, it's been the Nikon default location all along. It's just so much faster to have it on the FN2 button and you don't need to change your grip on the camera to get to it. It all depends on your shooting style I suppose. If you shoot landscapes or just one specific genre then you probably won't need to change it too often. I shoot a very wide range of photographs and often times I will be on a commercial shoot and just see something and you literally have moments to catch it. In fact over the years I have found those moments nearly always give you the best shots as they are natural and usually just abit special, half a second there is the difference between getting the shot and missing it. So having that facility to just change your focus mode in a split second is amazing for me. It was also the default setting for FN 2 on my Z6ii and Z7ii so I am used to it now :-). I suppose everyone is going to have slightly different settings and use their cameras differently and I am sure loads of people were screaming at their screens saying why is he doing that all through the video :-) Anyway I hope the video helped a bit anhd thanks for watching.

    • @stevetimman
      @stevetimman Год назад +3

      @@kieranhayesphotography interesting.
      I don’t change my grip at all when I use the dedicated button. You merely roll your palm pad that’s right below your thumb over the button and it activates it. The way you support the camera/lens with your left hand makes this a natural position to activate the button without changing your grip at all.
      Not sure how you are trying to use it but it’s become a very natural way to change focus modes and I think Nikon engineers designed it to be used this way.

    • @kieranhayesphotography
      @kieranhayesphotography  Год назад +1

      @@stevetimman Hi Steve, I think we grip the camera completely different so then. Maybe it's because I am left handed but I have always held the camera and supported the lens and camera body with my thumb to the left of the lens and my finger wrapped around the lens with my palm under the camera body then with my arm then dropping straight down from the camera to my chest to anchor the camera to my body for better stability. It's how I have always held the camera, not saying it's right but my thumb pad just wouldn't be able to reach the button then. Probably me just being weird but it creates an incredibly stable platform for longer focal lengths on the fly, which is what I tend to use a lot.

    Thanks for that Kieran - I had already found the "dust cover" one for the sensor, when changing lenses - and passed it on to a couple of Z8 groups I belong to. But I missed the "starlight" one. Fortunately I have a decent copy of thee Z8 Reference Guide, from OTC (formerly known as Old Time Cameras) - printed so it's easily readable! (unlike the original online copy). I think the starlight setting would be a perfect choice for one of the four personal "menu" selections. Get there in one jump instead of fumbling in the dark, and getting out of that menu settin would presumably switch it off again.

      Hi Richard, thanks for watching and I am glad it was a little bit of help. Those reference guides are great, the original manual is a difficult read alright.

    I think I might be one of the few people that has the sensor shield turned off. I don’t change lenses very often, but I do turn the camera on/off a ton to conserve the battery. It opens and closes so fast I felt like it would be a part that would eventually break. So I turned it off then added the on/off option to the my menu section. So if I do need it on to change a lens it’s easy to access and turn the shield feature on.

    • @kieranhayesphotography
      @kieranhayesphotography  Год назад +1

      If it works for you then that's all that matters 👍 Having the option to easily switch it on is great then too. On the point of it maybe breaking easily, I wouldn't worry about that, the shutter mechanism on most cameras would probably be built weaker and most go for 150k actuations. I am sure Nikon have built it to standard for a pro camera. Time will tell though I guess.

    • @csc-photo
      @csc-photo Год назад +1

      Let me help ease your mind on this - think about how many times a normal mechanical shutter actuates. Well the sensor shield is basically a simpler, slower, more robust mechanical shutter - and it only opens & closes a tiny amount of times, as compared to a normal shutter. It’s one of the best features of the Z8/9. That said, there’s no right / wrong on any setting and you should do what works best for your use case.

      Hi, So that's really straight forward, just go to memeory bank A and set you settings for whatever you want on that bank let's say you want to set it for landscapes so you can put it in manual focus and spot metering, when finished you can swap over to memory bank B and the Bank A settings are saved in camera.
      Then in bank B you can set it for Portraits or Wildlife and then in an instant you can swap from one style of photography to another for example Bank B could be set for eye AF and set at F2.2 as default and have matrix metering with AFC enabled.
      I hope that helps a bit.

      That's a very good question. Adobe RGB has more colour space than sRGB but sRGB is more widely compatible.
      Tbh there is a difference and Adobe RGB is the better option. In saying that I shoot a lot at sRGB on most my shoots as the images could literally be going straight to a Graphic designer to edit and work on.
      So there are advantages to both. If you do shoot in Adobe RGB just make sure to convert it to sRGB before you post it online.

      Hi, you can't change the size of the RAW files in the Z8. You can change to the Jpeg and Raw you can adjust the size of the Jpeg files.
      If you just want to reduce the file size then you can also change the "Raw Compression" from "lossless" to "High Efficiency*" and you will get the same resolution images with more compression to give you far smaller file size.
      I hope that helps a bit.

    Hi. Two questions :
    1. I’m unable to see the histogram in the viewfinder or the monitor despite going into settings a 17 and 18 and selecting display 3 which is supposed to show the histogram. When I select ‘set’ and okay and try the camera I am unable to see the histogram. Would be grateful for any help.
    2. What settings do I need to change to have the viewfinder properly reflect the exposure depending upon change in shutter speed and F stop.
    Thanks in advance.

    • @kieranhayesphotography
      @kieranhayesphotography  Год назад

      Hi, so just so I am clear on what's happening... When you go into the menu, you can see the histogram is enabled for D17 and D18 on Display 3? Is that right? So, to see it on the display you need to press the "Disp" button on the back of the camera to get it to switch display modes to "Display 3" mode and you should see the Histogram then. Is that not happening? For your second question, you have to switch setting D8 to "show effects of settings" once you change a setting then it will adjust the exposure of your live view in both the monitor and EVF. I hope that helps.

    don't use backup for card 2 - everything slows down. have card to as overflow --- if not you'll be wondering why its so slow!

    • @kieranhayesphotography
      @kieranhayesphotography  Год назад +1

      Hi Patrick, that's true but it really does depend on the type of photography you are doing. I have mine set for card redundancy so if a card fails I have a backup. If buffer transfer speeds and fps are what's important to you then yes that's exactly right. For me though I have to have a backup for the work I do, my insurnace just won't cover me if I don't. Some of the shoots I cover costs thousands for the models alone never mind the venue , hair and makeup etc... So I need to be sure to have a backup copy at all times. As the Z8 is a pro body I would presume a lot of people using it would also need that facility. Sports and wildlife photography obviously being the exception there. While my SD card tops out at 300mbs it still does a fairly good job at transfering files very quickly the very odd time I burst mode. Thanks for the input and for watching, if you can think of anything else I should include please let me know.

  • @ze3bar
    @ze3bar Год назад

    Do you think it be better to have the second card save HEIF’s instead? That way if you burst shoot you don’t get a bottleneck

    • @kieranhayesphotography
      @kieranhayesphotography  Год назад

      In all honesty, I haven't really properly tried and tested HEIF files a lot as of yet. I also don't shoot a lot in burst mode, maybe only 5 to 7 images at a time, so I am never hitting the end of the buffer. I would think maybe the best option for now is to shoot in Jpg to the sd card if are using burst mode a lot. Just as a backup if the main card fails.

      @@kieranhayesphotography No, thank you for such an excellent video. What astonishes me is that there are so many ways that people program the z8.
      It does have some issues, including overheating. I have two gripes, one that they didn't add two Express slots rather than split it between old and new gen. And my main gripe is that there is no 'non-compression' setting. Lossless is still a compression, and unlike sound, to compress the file bits of the image are removed, permanently. Rather like a jpeg image, hence I never shoot in jpeg.
      I have requested that they add this back as it has been an option in all my previous cameras. The result of using lossless is that I end up with more data and a larger file size if I shoot the same image with my old DX 7200 than I do with the z8.
      Those two gripes are likely to see me change camera's when the either Nikon release the z9 MKII or the z10. The z8 is still a really good camera, but it leaves me without that additional slot that I prefer to have.
      Thanks again.

      Hi, sounds like you are in centre weighted metering. You can disable that in the D17 or D18 menu option, one is for EVF the other is for the viewfinder options. Click on the one you want and the display mode you use. So for display one press on the right arrow to enter the settings for that mode and scroll down to the last option and disable it. Just because its a ''Professional Camera' or rather a camera for 'Professionals' doesn't mean that at times the 'auto' mode wouldn't be very, very handy. It's the one thing that REALLY annoyed me moving up to the D850 from the D750 was all the faffing about between modes. Not everyone who owns these cameras is going to be a professional photographer or anything close. Some people-like myself- just want to buy the best kit they can afford.
