The one thing that I MUST change in My Nikon Z cameras is,, in the Z8,,, "f6 RELEASE BUTTON TO USE DIAL" ""TURN IT ON"" then (WHEN YOU TOUCH ANY '"FN"BUTTON,, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO HOLD IT DOWN TILL YOU ARE DONE) push the "FN" button, change the settings then touch any button to finish the change!!!!!!!!!!! OMG this Video Is One Of The Best Tutorials !!!!!!!! I am going to share this with a number of My friends !!!!!!!! Glad I Found You "KIERAN HAYES" :) :) :)
Hi John, thanks a million for that and yes one of the things I love about photography is how we all set up our gear differently. It's how customisable cameras are now is both a blessing and a disaster at times especially when you take it out of the box for the first time :-) Thanks again for watching and for the insights also.
Setting your SD to be backup, is going to slow the camera down to the speed of the SD card. If you want the benefits of the speed and buffers, get a fast CF Express B card and only use SD for Overflow.
Hi Mark, tbh I have never had that issue and while my SD cards top out at 300mbs, I would never personally come across that issue, I also dont shoot in high fps normally. For me card redundancy is always going to be far more important than buffers or transfer speeds. The commercial shoots I work on costs thousands to host so depending on a single card is sheer madness for me and even my insurance company wouldnt cover me for that. Not saying it's wrong to set it as overflow just the way I set up my camera. Everyone uses theirs differently but as the Z8 is a pro body I would presume redundancy would be a very high priority for most people. Thanks for watching and appreciate the input and enjoy the Z8 👍
Yes, if you engage in different types of photography you need to change this setting. For a wedding to backup, for high speed birds in flight or some sports, to overflow. Or buy a Z9.. 🧐
I use top notch SD cards like Sandisk Extreme Pro and Sony XQD ! Never had a problem and always use 2 x 64GB cards in backup mode and have 2 pairs of cards!
Don’t know if mentioned already. To change focus modes there is a dedicated button on the FRONT of the camera to do so. It’s on the bottom right side of facing the Z8. Saves a custom function setting.
Hi Steve, thanks and ya I know about that one, it's been the Nikon default location all along. It's just so much faster to have it on the FN2 button and you don't need to change your grip on the camera to get to it. It all depends on your shooting style I suppose. If you shoot landscapes or just one specific genre then you probably won't need to change it too often. I shoot a very wide range of photographs and often times I will be on a commercial shoot and just see something and you literally have moments to catch it. In fact over the years I have found those moments nearly always give you the best shots as they are natural and usually just abit special, half a second there is the difference between getting the shot and missing it. So having that facility to just change your focus mode in a split second is amazing for me. It was also the default setting for FN 2 on my Z6ii and Z7ii so I am used to it now :-). I suppose everyone is going to have slightly different settings and use their cameras differently and I am sure loads of people were screaming at their screens saying why is he doing that all through the video :-) Anyway I hope the video helped a bit anhd thanks for watching.
@@kieranhayesphotography interesting. I don’t change my grip at all when I use the dedicated button. You merely roll your palm pad that’s right below your thumb over the button and it activates it. The way you support the camera/lens with your left hand makes this a natural position to activate the button without changing your grip at all. Not sure how you are trying to use it but it’s become a very natural way to change focus modes and I think Nikon engineers designed it to be used this way.
@@stevetimman Hi Steve, I think we grip the camera completely different so then. Maybe it's because I am left handed but I have always held the camera and supported the lens and camera body with my thumb to the left of the lens and my finger wrapped around the lens with my palm under the camera body then with my arm then dropping straight down from the camera to my chest to anchor the camera to my body for better stability. It's how I have always held the camera, not saying it's right but my thumb pad just wouldn't be able to reach the button then. Probably me just being weird but it creates an incredibly stable platform for longer focal lengths on the fly, which is what I tend to use a lot.
I opted to read the transcript. I agree with some of your choices. I use a Z9 but I was curious. I use 4 shooting banks. 1 is set up for people, 2, is birding 3 is more about landscapes, and 4 is manual. Switching off subject detect is something I can do via Fn 2 which is set so I can swap focus modes (hold and rotate the dial) Go to one of the old DSLR ‘dynamic area’ modes. This drops subject detect. You can switch back anytime. I don’t use the lower left button because it is in a tricky spot so it usually involves taking my eye away from the viewfinder (no time for that!)
Hi Martin, that's why I love photography, seeing how people not only see a view differently and capture it in their own way but also how people use their equipment to get the desired results. Thanks for the feedback andf input Martin and enjoy the Z9.
It's a nice upgrade alright and the D850 was beyond awesome which says a lot for the Z8. I haven't heard of any camera shop anywhere having stock.... That's just nuts. I know Nikon just sent out the second delivery so stocks should be in all shops soon hopefully. Enjoy taming the Z8 :-)
I used what you said for fn2 button on my Z6II but the Z8 has a button for this on the left side and it is easy to use with the left thumb. So I have the fn2 button left for another function.
Hi Michael, Yes, the side button for the focus control settings is also very handy. The reason why I use the FN2 button is I use an L Bracket or a cage on my Z8 so the button is not as easily accessible then. It's a lot faster for me to use the FN2 button. The beauty of photography is we all use our gear differently and what works for one person doesn't for the other. Enjoy the Z8 it's an incredible camera and the different memory banks make this camera so versatile.
@@kieranhayesphotography ok. thats a good reason. What I have is "Recall shooting functions (hold)" --> "AF 3D" and "options for motivs = off" so you have with one click on the button an AF field what you can point on whereever you want if motivdetection is not working like you want. I hope you understand what UI mean. I am german and my english is not like my motherlanguage.
@michaelrutta4661 Hi Michael, I understand you perfectly and isn't it just fantastic how customizable the z8 is? It often amazes me on workshops how people see a photograph so differently and also how they use their equipment in different ways. I am actually in Germany right now at the base of Zugspitze having a late lunch. It's a beautiful part of the world.
So enjoy the time in Germany. I was in thus zugspitz area too. Unfotunatley the mountain was covered in Clouds completly. But one day i will manage IT to Go Up there
@michaelrutta4661 We were just about to go up and it started raining and thick clouds have come in now, so it looks like I won't be going up there now either. It's a reason to come back here again now 😀. Maybe next time I will bump into you at the top 👍
Kieran, you might be amused to learn that I've been doing a bit of "promo" for you on one of my Nikon Z8 Facebook pages - for example, after referring them to this video, I ended by saying - "I must admit, not having coming across Kieran before, I'll be looking out for more of his videos, going forward into the future! Nice guy, and very helpful!"
Hi Richard, thanks for that, I appreciate it. Yes, I am not really known and I have only really been posting youtube videos properly this year, even at that they are a bit scattered as I record them between shoots and when I get a few spare hours. I am hoping to post a lot more in 2024 and to get more time to post aswell. I could be building a new studio next year so fingers crossed I can have a dedicated RUclips set up then. That would make life so much easier. Thanks again and have a great week :-)
Thank you so much for this information, I will be setting up the basics on my camera tomorrow, and will use this video as my initial guide. I appreciate the work you put into this for those of us less technologically adept, and yet what to learn and use the top of the line equipment. I traded in my Z7ll and my 50mm f1,2, The 50 was the least used of my Z lenses, and as nice as it was, I wasn't doing it justice,
Hi Randy, thank you and I seriously hope it helps you setup your Z8. Not every setting might suit you as we all use our cameras differently but it should be a very good start for you anyway. I still have my Z7ii it's not a bad camera at all but the focus on the Z8 is a good bit better. The Z50mm F1.2 is a cracking lens but as you say there isn't much poi t having it if you don't really use it. Enjoy the Z8 it's a pure beast of a camera.
Thanks for that Kieran - I had already found the "dust cover" one for the sensor, when changing lenses - and passed it on to a couple of Z8 groups I belong to. But I missed the "starlight" one. Fortunately I have a decent copy of thee Z8 Reference Guide, from OTC (formerly known as Old Time Cameras) - printed so it's easily readable! (unlike the original online copy). I think the starlight setting would be a perfect choice for one of the four personal "menu" selections. Get there in one jump instead of fumbling in the dark, and getting out of that menu settin would presumably switch it off again.
Hi Richard, thanks for watching and I am glad it was a little bit of help. Those reference guides are great, the original manual is a difficult read alright. Regarding the Starlight setting what I use for that now is the lens FN button to just switch it on and off but yes the custom memory banks really are a huge advantage. If you shoot multiple genres of photography like I do it really does help a lot. Thanks again and have a great weekend.
You might be amused to know my doctor moved here from County Cork,, and my ancestry is predominantly french with a splash of scottish - you'd LOVE it, sitting in on some of our conversations!@@kieranhayesphotography
@@richardwarren4031 Co. Cork is the best county in Ireland :-) I have a bit of French ancestry also. I am sure ye have a great time chatting about those crazy Europeans :-)
7:16 of the video. I have set my FN2 button as you suggested but I am unclear on how to then select the Pinpoint, etc etc. I can use FN2 and the wheel to change from manual to Single and continuous and them I am lost. What have I missed
Hi, the good news is you have it all set correctly and when you press the Fn2 button and turn the thumbwheel on the back it will as you say swap from M to AFS to AFC. To change the AF detection mode use the front wheel then... I was just typing this when I saw your reply saying you already had it figured out :-) Enjoy the Z8 it's an amazing camera.
I think I might be one of the few people that has the sensor shield turned off. I don’t change lenses very often, but I do turn the camera on/off a ton to conserve the battery. It opens and closes so fast I felt like it would be a part that would eventually break. So I turned it off then added the on/off option to the my menu section. So if I do need it on to change a lens it’s easy to access and turn the shield feature on.
If it works for you then that's all that matters 👍 Having the option to easily switch it on is great then too. On the point of it maybe breaking easily, I wouldn't worry about that, the shutter mechanism on most cameras would probably be built weaker and most go for 150k actuations. I am sure Nikon have built it to standard for a pro camera. Time will tell though I guess.
Let me help ease your mind on this - think about how many times a normal mechanical shutter actuates. Well the sensor shield is basically a simpler, slower, more robust mechanical shutter - and it only opens & closes a tiny amount of times, as compared to a normal shutter. It’s one of the best features of the Z8/9. That said, there’s no right / wrong on any setting and you should do what works best for your use case.
Hi, So that's really straight forward, just go to memeory bank A and set you settings for whatever you want on that bank let's say you want to set it for landscapes so you can put it in manual focus and spot metering, when finished you can swap over to memory bank B and the Bank A settings are saved in camera. Then in bank B you can set it for Portraits or Wildlife and then in an instant you can swap from one style of photography to another for example Bank B could be set for eye AF and set at F2.2 as default and have matrix metering with AFC enabled. I hope that helps a bit.
Thank you so much for this information, Next week I receive the Nikon z8 camera. You helped me a lot with the initial settings. I would love to receive a link or further explanations on the topic of focus points , zeev katz
Congratulations on your new camera, exciting times ahead. I don't have a video specifically on focus in the Z8 as of yet but I will be adding one next year.
@@kieranhayesphotography yes they are both working normally in Manual mode. I’m not sure what the issue could be. Im considering setting camera back to default again to see if it could have something to do with another setting I may have done.
@alexgutierrez1045 Hi Alex, it sounds like the best option atm. I am struggling to think of a settting that would affect that one setting like that. Fingers crossed the reset does it.
@@kieranhayesphotography I reset the camera and thankfully it’s working now. Not sure what setting may have been messing with it. Thank you for the response and the good content! 👍🏼
@alexgutierrez1045 That's good to hear and thanks for letting me know. Now I have to have a look at how that happened in the first place, there must be an additional setting in there somewhere that changes that setting. Have a great weekend 👍
There's anyway of disabling the camera to save on separate folder when using memory banks? I have 4 memory banks and my cf express is a mess when i open it up on computer because the camera keeps creating diferent folders for each memory bank.
Hello; If we want to change the auto focus/auto focus area setting with f2, we need to turn the rear/front ring while pressing f2, right? I guess it's not just something that happens by pressing f2.
Yes that's right, holding the f2 button and turning the front/rear dials will change the AF mode and also the AF area mode settings. It's really handy when you get used to it.
That's a very good question. Adobe RGB has more colour space than sRGB but sRGB is more widely compatible. Tbh there is a difference and Adobe RGB is the better option. In saying that I shoot a lot at sRGB on most my shoots as the images could literally be going straight to a Graphic designer to edit and work on. So there are advantages to both. If you do shoot in Adobe RGB just make sure to convert it to sRGB before you post it online.
If you look at setting 15 which is at 16:40 in the video it shows you how to enable the rule of thirds grid and the histogram can be done in exactly the same way. It's in setting D17 or D18, I walk you through it in the video (although it's for the grid I am showing). I hope that helps 👍
Hi. Two questions : 1. I’m unable to see the histogram in the viewfinder or the monitor despite going into settings a 17 and 18 and selecting display 3 which is supposed to show the histogram. When I select ‘set’ and okay and try the camera I am unable to see the histogram. Would be grateful for any help. 2. What settings do I need to change to have the viewfinder properly reflect the exposure depending upon change in shutter speed and F stop. Thanks in advance.
Hi, so just so I am clear on what's happening... When you go into the menu, you can see the histogram is enabled for D17 and D18 on Display 3? Is that right? So, to see it on the display you need to press the "Disp" button on the back of the camera to get it to switch display modes to "Display 3" mode and you should see the Histogram then. Is that not happening? For your second question, you have to switch setting D8 to "show effects of settings" once you change a setting then it will adjust the exposure of your live view in both the monitor and EVF. I hope that helps.
Excellent, Kieran, love your enthusiasm, the only other setting I change going back to the early Digital SLRs is changing the rear control wheel to aperture control as I am mainly Landscape and it just falls handily for the thumb. Look forward to your full review, so far I love it, Nikon ergonomics have always been brilliant.
Hi Douglas, thanks for watching and I totally understand the need to change that. Hope to get the full review out soon. If I can get the spare time to do it of course 😀. The Nikon grip is the only reason I am shooting Nikon today. I went in to buy a Canon (numerous friends telling me to buy Canon) but tried a Nikon D70s and it felt just so right. Loved them ever since.
Hi July, thanks a lot for the sub and the kind words. I used to use the Nikon Z6ii for my videos but now it's a mix of the Z7ii or the Z8 depending on the video I am shooting. Both cameras do a really good job and I use a Nikkor Z 35mm F1.8 lens most of the time. Thanks again and I hope that helps a bit.
Even worse than a UV filter it's a diffusion filter. That's a Formatt Hitech 1/8th black Super mist diffusion filter. I use them a lot when I shoot video. I love the look they give on the 35mm and 50mm, I go a bit weaker for longer focal lengths then. Thanks for watching and for the question 👍
Hi. No need to waste a function button for af selections. Their is already a button on the lower left front portion of the camera that does exactly this.
Hi, yes there is but for split second changing of AF modes the fn button on the front is an awful lot faster. It all depends on what genre of photography you shoot 👍 as I use an LBracket at all times it makes that button less accessible.
Now that's a good question, I haven't seen anything about the opacity setting I also personally haven't had an issue seeing it on any of my cameras, looks exactly the same on the Z6 and Z7. Do you shoot in spot focus? I will have a look later on but from what I have seen in the menu I don't believe you can.
@@kieranhayesphotography maybe it was just using another camera to record the image but when you were using the joystick to move it I found it difficult to locate it. Would also be nice to have options for different colors, red while taking shots if fall colors would be a bloody nightmare as half the screen would be different shades of red. You’re videos are fantastic! I’m sold a z8 is the camera for me, by the time I can afford one though I’ll be hearing about the release of the Z8ii
@PCnever that's true about the colours hence why you could change the focus peaking colours. Tbh even when I looked back at the video there now I found it hard to follow the little red square. Never had that issue on the camera looking at it live though. It's not cheap alright, I would still say it's worth it. Fingers crossed you can get your hands on one sooner than that 👍 Thanks for the kind words also.
@@kieranhayesphotography I’m looking forward to more of your z8 videos, you’re a no BS reviewer, keeping it honest and light hearted! I feel I can trust what you’re saying because you don’t sugar coat it by giving nothing but praise or nothing but condemnation! Keep the great videos coming!
@PCnever thanks again. Fingers crossed I can get some more content out soon on the Z8. I can be bought with a free Z8 if you're listening Nikon 🤣. Just kidding, it would have to be two of them. It's one of the funny parts of RUclips, I am a very serious photographer but I also enjoy a good laugh and I usually end out laughing at myself a lot. People tend to take you less seriously then but I am not too worried about that these days 👍
Recall Shooting Functions (Hold) function button one. With this one setting, press to engage your current settings but increase shutter speed, 3D AFC and frame rate to maximum 20 FPS to capture action in highly accurate focus bursts.
ruclips.net/video/IiceirVFSMM/видео.html 7:29 to 11:25 Hudson Henry explains it best. He's using a Z9 but it applies to the Z8 as that is what I'm using and have it saved to on my camera.
hi Kieran! I've had my Z8 for one week now and it is an incredible beast! I've been obsessed with the pre-capture function for birding but am very interested in setting up the Banks. Will you be doing a video on how to do this? I really enjoyed this one! **subscribed**
Hi Robin Congrats on the Z8, it truly is an amazing camera. I haven't been this excite about a camera in a very long time. The pre capture is a great feature to have alright for birding :-) How did we live without these little features before :-) Thanks for the sub and for watching but especially for the kind feedback. I had planned on popping up a video on the memory banks but the short version is if you go into Shoot A whatever settings you apply to focus etc while in Shoot A mode will stay in that mode, so lets say you go to shoot A and change to spot focus and Manual mode and then switch to Shoot B and swap to aperture priority and eye detection that setting. Shoot A will still be in spot focus and manual mode. This applies to a load of settings like Focus mode, focus tracking mode, metering etc... I hope that helps a bit.
@@kieranhayesphotography Hi again! Thanks for this, I will check it out. I've seen these shooting banks in the menu and need to sit with the camera and work on that!
Thank you so much for this video. It's very helpful. Question I have for you or anyone can help please, I can not change the size of my RAW FILES to MEDIUM, it keeps saying THAT THE CURRENTS STATE OF THE CAMERA, if someone can help me I'd appreciate it a lot. thank you guys!!
Hi, you can't change the size of the RAW files in the Z8. You can change to the Jpeg and Raw you can adjust the size of the Jpeg files. If you just want to reduce the file size then you can also change the "Raw Compression" from "lossless" to "High Efficiency*" and you will get the same resolution images with more compression to give you far smaller file size. I hope that helps a bit.
Thank-you again. What lens do you have on the Z8? I only have SD cards, so no back ups or overflow for me yet. Will get the CFexpress when they go on sale, or when the price drops. I did pick up an extra battery, and was considering buying the camera grip. I am changing the settings back and forth trying to figure what suits me the best. It will take time before the camera become second nature, and you don't have to think about things when getting the shot. I like where you set the Fn1 to SHOOT, so I did that too. At first I tried 3D focus on the Fn1. But I was having trouble reaching the button around the grip and hold it with my finger . It was easier when I switched the 3D to Fn2. Can't wait to see what other ideas, and function buttons you used.
Hi Stan, That was the 14-30 F4, love that lens and use it a lot for Landscapes and real estate photography. It's nice3 and light but also takes 82mm filters which is fantastic. I have a good few Z Lenses but that and the 70-200 are my favs so far. The 24-70mm is my workhorse though. I keep changing the button functions these days but I think the setup in the video is my fav so far. I would love if you could set the star light to FN 3 but right now it can only go on FN2 sadly. The memory bank sewtup is just fantastic it's so quick to completely change everything :-) Hopefully Cf Express cards drop a bit in price they are fairly expensive these days alright. Thanks again.
@@kieranhayesphotography The F mount 14-24 on my D810 is my favorite. That would be my combo as back up and second camera. On the Z8, I will be switching between my Z 24-120 and the F 70-200/FTZ adaptor. Not sure if I would use my F 24-70 now. Probably my next Z lens would be a prime or a longer lens. You said you like high ISO settings, but would you consider using a flash on your Z8?
@stanmah1588 Hi Stan, I have a good few Z primes and so far I am highly impressed with them. They are very sharp and little to no focus breathing on them also. I use a flash on the Z8 but mainly I have been using my studio lights and my constant light with it. I must have a serious look for issues with my speedlights though and see how they work with it. It's been a great journey so far and no problems as of yet 👍 What primes are you looking at?
@@kieranhayesphotography I was thinking about the Z85 to replace my Nikon 85mm f/1.8G. Then many of my friends have a 200-500 or a 400, so I may need one if I go out and shoot with them.
Dear Kieran; I just subscribed to your channel. I watched a video you prepared and I liked it very much. Your style is very understandable and efficient. I bought a Z8. I have been using Nikon for many years. I want to give more importance to wildlife photography with my new camera. For this reason, first of all, do you have a video about bird photography that includes the settings I need to make on the camera? I can say that I am a little confused about changing the settings instantly. For this reason, I need to understand the logic well. I would be very pleased if you could help. Thanks.
Hi Amet, thanks for subscribing and for watching the video. I don't currently have a video on wildlife for the Z8 but I have a list of videos I want to do on the Z8 so I will add that to the list. It's a fantastic camera and with bird AF and those memory banks it makes setting it up and swapping modes so easy. Sorry I can't guide you to a video I have as of yet but hopefully I will get one sorted out soon.
In all honesty, I haven't really properly tried and tested HEIF files a lot as of yet. I also don't shoot a lot in burst mode, maybe only 5 to 7 images at a time, so I am never hitting the end of the buffer. I would think maybe the best option for now is to shoot in Jpg to the sd card if are using burst mode a lot. Just as a backup if the main card fails.
@@kieranhayesphotography I did and find it excellent Kieran. Haven’t had much time to try it out yet but have most of my settings sorted. Still use the D850 in the studio as I need to sort out the different compatible flashes Thanks again for your excellent video🙏
The clean image sensor setting at shut down nearly made it into my top 15 it was super close 👍. The release lock facility I can see might be handy for some but personally I don't use it for 2 reasons, firstly shooting tethered is going to be an issue and secondly I always have two cards in the camera for redundancy. My insurance won't cover me on Commercial shoots otherwise. Again the beauty of photography is how we all use our gear differently and what's important to one person isn't to the next. Thank you very much for not only watching the video but also providing feedback and suggestions. I seriously hope others read your comment and it helps them with their Z8 setting. Thanks again and have a great weekend.
Exactly, we all use these cameras so differently and once you find what works for you that's all that's important. The only reason I shoot RAW on both is that I have too as a failsafe. Some of the shoots I work on cost serious money to setup and run so my insurance company needs a digital raw backup as some shoots the clue t gets the raw files. Their own in house editor edits the shots then. Jpeg is a great backup in fact any backup is great. Enjoy the Z8 it's a truly wonderful camera.
Thank you very much and glad you found it useful. My plan is to do a video orientated one fairly soon. I am away in Germany atm though. I have a video on Nikon video settings here ruclips.net/video/a3prdk-h9Ds/видео.html that might be of some use, it covers a lot of the settings for the Z series cameras 👍 Hope that helps a small bit until I pop up the Z8 video..
Hi, sounds like you are in centre weighted metering. You can disable that in the D17 or D18 menu option, one is for EVF the other is for the viewfinder options. Click on the one you want and the display mode you use. So for display one press on the right arrow to enter the settings for that mode and scroll down to the last option and disable it. That will get rid of the circle in the centre of the screen then. I show you how to do something similar in the video only it's for enabling the grid lines. Hope that helps and enjoy the Z8 👍
Hi Patrick, that's true but it really does depend on the type of photography you are doing. I have mine set for card redundancy so if a card fails I have a backup. If buffer transfer speeds and fps are what's important to you then yes that's exactly right. For me though I have to have a backup for the work I do, my insurnace just won't cover me if I don't. Some of the shoots I cover costs thousands for the models alone never mind the venue , hair and makeup etc... So I need to be sure to have a backup copy at all times. As the Z8 is a pro body I would presume a lot of people using it would also need that facility. Sports and wildlife photography obviously being the exception there. While my SD card tops out at 300mbs it still does a fairly good job at transfering files very quickly the very odd time I burst mode. Thanks for the input and for watching, if you can think of anything else I should include please let me know.
Let me make you this question: when i press the playback button of my Z8, the pictures shown on the screen start to rotate... How can i change that? Thanks a lot!
Hi John, yes it has and I thought about maybe redoing the video, I might do an updated version of it fairly soon. Thanks for watching and for the feedback.
@@kieranhayesphotography No, thank you for such an excellent video. What astonishes me is that there are so many ways that people program the z8. It does have some issues, including overheating. I have two gripes, one that they didn't add two Express slots rather than split it between old and new gen. And my main gripe is that there is no 'non-compression' setting. Lossless is still a compression, and unlike sound, to compress the file bits of the image are removed, permanently. Rather like a jpeg image, hence I never shoot in jpeg. I have requested that they add this back as it has been an option in all my previous cameras. The result of using lossless is that I end up with more data and a larger file size if I shoot the same image with my old DX 7200 than I do with the z8. Those two gripes are likely to see me change camera's when the either Nikon release the z9 MKII or the z10. The z8 is still a really good camera, but it leaves me without that additional slot that I prefer to have. Thanks again.
Hi, im from germany. Why i say that? Your Videos and Tipps are more than excellent. But you speak so holy quick, that it is not easy for me to follow you. Hello and thanks for the feedback, I honestly do try and talk a bit slower in my videos. Scarily I talk a good bit faster in real life 😀. I am just back from your beautiful country and my German is not very good so I understand what you mean about speaking slower 😀. Thanks again for the feedback and for watching 👍
Setting change 10...Why don't they just put 'Auto' mode on & the many quick settings you can change (sports/landscape/low light etc) such as on the D750??? Just because its a ''Professional Camera' or rather a camera for 'Professionals' doesn't mean that at times the 'auto' mode wouldn't be very, very handy. It's the one thing that REALLY annoyed me moving up to the D850 from the D750 was all the faffing about between modes. Not everyone who owns these cameras is going to be a professional photographer or anything close. Some people-like myself- just want to buy the best kit they can afford.
Hi Jim, that's the beauty of photography, we all use our camera gear differently. Same way as we all compose a shot differently. I have to say though BBF is the first thing I enable on my camera, would be lost without it but then again it all depends on what you shoot and your style of photography.
@@kieranhayesphotography Thank you for not taking it the wrong way. I just received my Z8 and am going through all the menus to have it work similar to my other Z cameras....

@@kieranhayesphotography I AGREE with You STRONGLY !!!!!! :) :) :)
Thanks for the feedback andf input Martin and enjoy the Z9.
great tips I LLLOOOOVVVVEEEE my new Z8!! Upgraded from D850 . I can't believe the camera shop still has a Z8 not sold!!!
Excellent info! Very easy to follow along!
Thanks Randy and glad it helped a bit. Enjoy the Z8 👍

Hi, the good news is you have it all set correctly and when you press the Fn2 button and turn the thumbwheel on the back it will as you say swap from M to AFS to AFC. To change the AF detection mode use the front wheel then...

Fantastic video with sufficient explanation. Keep up the excellent work!
Thanks a lot for the kind words and for watching.
@@csc-photo couldn't agree with you more 👍
Great video, very informative. For FN1 how does one set set and save the settings for SHOOOT A, B, C & D? Do you have a video for that?? Thx.
Thanks@@kieranhayesphotography

Hi Alex, that's a very strange one. Are both dials working normally in manual mode?
@@kieranhayesphotography yes they are both working normally in Manual mode. I’m not sure what the issue could be. Im considering setting camera back to default again to see if it could have something to do with another setting I may have done.

Thanks for this. What's your opinion on Color Space? Default is sRGB but I've always been told to change it to Adobe RGB.
How do you get the histogram on the display screen?
If you look at setting 15 which is at 16:40 in the video it shows you how to enable the rule of thirds grid and the histogram can be done in exactly the same way. It's in setting D17 or D18, I walk you through it in the video (although it's for the grid I am showing). I hope that helps 👍
Hi. Two questions :
Excellent, Kieran, love your enthusiasm, the only other setting I change going back to the early Digital SLRs is changing the rear control wheel to aperture control as I am mainly
Landscape and it just falls handily for the thumb.
Loved them ever since.
this was incredibly helpful. thank you

Kieran excellent video, you have a new sub, what's the camera 📸 you use for RUclips videos?
Hi July, thanks a lot for the sub and the kind words. I used to use the Nikon Z6ii for my videos but now it's a mix of the Z7ii or the Z8 depending on the video I am shooting. Both cameras do a really good job and I use a Nikkor Z 35mm F1.8 lens most of the time. Thanks again and I hope that helps a bit.
Is that a UV filter you have on that wonderful Lens?
Even worse than a UV filter it's a diffusion filter.
That's a Formatt Hitech 1/8th black Super mist diffusion filter. I use them a lot when I shoot video.
I love the look they give on the 35mm and 50mm, I go a bit weaker for longer focal lengths then.
Thanks for watching and for the question 👍
Very helpful video. Thank you.
You're very welcome and glad you enjoyed it 👍
Can you change the opacity of your focus box, I could barely see it
Now that's a good question, I haven't seen anything about the opacity setting I also personally haven't had an issue seeing it on any of my cameras, looks exactly the same on the Z6 and Z7. Do you shoot in spot focus? I will have a look later on but from what I have seen in the menu I don't believe you can.
@@kieranhayesphotography maybe it was just using another camera to record the image but when you were using the joystick to move it I found it difficult to locate it.

Do you think it be better to have the second card save HEIF’s instead? That way if you burst shoot you don’t get a bottleneck

Setup Menu -> Slot empty release lock -> Release loked
The clean image sensor setting at shut down nearly made it into my top 15 it was super close 👍.
The release lock facility I can see might be handy for some but personally I don't use it for 2 reasons, firstly shooting tethered is going to be an issue and secondly I always have two cards in the camera for redundancy.
My insurance won't cover me on Commercial shoots otherwise.
Again the beauty of photography is how we all use our gear differently and what's important to one person isn't to the next.

I really like to use raw+jpg saves a lot of time. And if you really needed, yo got the raw.

Does anyone knows how to get rid of the circle in the middle?
Hi, sounds like you are in centre weighted metering. You can disable that in the D17 or D18 menu option, one is for EVF the other is for the viewfinder options. Click on the one you want and the display mode you use. So for display one press on the right arrow to enter the settings for that mode and scroll down to the last option and disable it. That will get rid of the circle in the centre of the screen then. I show you how to do something similar in the video only it's for enabling the grid lines. Hope that helps and enjoy the Z8 👍
don't use backup for card 2 - everything slows down. have card to as overflow --- if not you'll be wondering why its so slow!
Hi Carlos, when you say rotate, do you mean it goes from portrait to landscape orientation or it moves from photo to photo?
It´s solved! I just had to sgo to the "Playback Menu" and put the option "Auto Rotate Pictures" to "off"! Thanks a lot for your concern!
Ah yes, that will do it alright. Glad you found the soloution and enjoy the Z8 it's an amazing camera.
Menu Numbering has changed in Display Shooting.
👌
Thank you 👍
Hi, im from germany.
Why i say that? Your Videos and Tipps are more than excellent. But you speak so holy quick, that it is not easy for me to follow you. If you want to have international Follower you must speak a little bit slower. Much more better to understand. Thanks for your great tipps ... good job! 👌🏼👊🏼
@@kieranhayesphotography Thank you very much !! ♥️👊🏼😁
Never cared for back button focus and I never will....
@@jimtincher7357 enjoy it Jim, it's an amazing camera 👍
BBF is definitely the single most important thing on my camera. If you couldn’t use it with z8 I wouldn’t buy it.
At the speed you go no one will be able to follow you. NO LIKE
Sorry about that and good luck with another person's video.
they’re always after me lucky charms. too d’doo ta-too dee-doo
Crazily we don't have lucky charms in Ireland :-) but I do know what you are talking about 😂
Awesome video ❤
Thanks a million
