Great suggestions! I rented a Zf a few weeks ago to have a second body for a wedding shoot and did about half of of these 🙂I particularly liked the wide focus boxes paired with face detect. Great combo!!
Yes, the small wide AF area box is great especially if you are shooting in a crowd and you just want to have one person in focus. I love it for that and I was sorely tempted to include it in the options here... Maybe I should have 😀. Thanks for watching and for the feedback, it's a great little camera isn't it? The worst part is handing it back 😂😂😂
@@kieranhayesphotography Yes, the hardest part was sending it back! Although it's a little too big for my hand without a grip, but that would be easy to fix. One thing that I forgot to test was the pixel shift paired with the Valloi 35 film scanner - 96Mpx film scans could be epic!!!😁
@jameskezman oh, I never thought of scanning film with pixel shift that's a really good idea. That would be amazing alright. I tried it a few times on the ZF and it works very well with still images of course. Ya, the grip is an easy one to solve, I actually bought one for testing the camera, I just didn't like it without a grip.
Thanks for watching and for the feedback, it has been a pure joy using the ZF, I am going to find it very hard to send it back to Nikon... I have another couple of videos on it coming out fairly soon including my full review but I think we already know how positive that's going to be.
Thanks Leon, yes, I love Star Light it's incredibly handy being able to see so well in the dark and get your compositions right. For a small fairly reasonably priced camera it's filled with features. Really enjoyed using it and it has captured some great shots for me.
Enjoyed the video. The green focus box confirmation in AF-C mode! And focus points memory in landscape/portrait! I've read detailed settings guides elsewhere and for some reason these two eluded me or they were not even covered. Little things do mean something after all, don't they? Thanks Kieran.
Hi Michael, oh the small things all add up and the green confirmation box is a really nice touch as well as the focus point orientation setting. I am sure I have probably also missed a few things others may have highlighted but that just goes to show how we all use and interact with our gear differently. Really glad it helped and thanks for watching and more importantly enjoy the ZF is an awesome camera. I may have just given it away but my full review will probably be going up tomorrow and it just might be positive 😉
Oh now that's a great question... For me the Z8 is a serious day long camera that will do anything for you and more where as the ZF is a bit more of a fun let's hang out and create something cool with it camera. The ZF is incredibly capable but for the higher resolution and sheer video capabilities it couldn't replace the Z8. It's an amazing camera though and it has been a joy to use it.
Guys! I bought the Nikon ZF yesterday. I have been a Sony A7 iii user for long. I compared the raws from the cameras. Surprisingly, the Sony a7 iii raws are not only bigger in size but also more detailed at high ISOs. I can't seem to get the same details from the ZF files. Also the preview on the ZF screen is very poor quality. All the details are only visible in LR. How to get same amount of details as the Sony and how to get a faithful preview on the ZF screen? Please help. The ZF is still in returns window.
The ZF gives you amazing results from my experience with it. How are you viewing the files? Are you shooting in Lossless Raw? As regards the Preview, it's a jpeg preview you are seeing in the preview window so you generally don't mad details on the previews.
Great tips! Wondering about Starlight View vs disabling Live View, when using flash in darker environments. Is there an advantage to Starlight? Will test tonight as well. Thanks!
Thanks for watching and great question. I originally thought they would be the same thing but star light is definitely slightly brighter in very dark scenes. It seems to boost the shadows even more, I found the blacks to be going ever so slightly grey. I really like it and it's so easy to just switch on and off.
Have I misunderstood? You begin by saying that you are going to change from RAW to JPEG but in the demo you do the opposite - you change from JPEG fine to RAW which are you suggesting?
Sorry, I didn't even spot I got that backwards. It's swapping from Jpeg to Raw. My mistake, crazy I didn't spot that. Raw is the better option as a fail safe and if you want to capture images with a greater dynamic range. Sorry about any confusion my mistake caused.
@@kieranhayesphotography Brilliant Kieran. Thought so - Thanks for your great suggestions. Although I've been bald for many a long year I'm off to buy myself a shower cap right now!
Hi, so I was in manual mode (also works for shutter priority mode) and when you turn the back thumbwheel it will change the exposure time, the front thumbwheel in manual mode will change your aperture then. I hope that helps a bit and if you have any other questions do feel free to ask them.
Many many thanks for this very helpful video on ZF setting. Probably the best video for Nikon ZF practical guide.🙏
Thank you very much for watching it and the kind feedback, so glad it helped a bit.
Enjoy the ZF it's a gorgeous camera.

Thank you for this video. Very helpful.
Hi James glad it helped and thanks for watching.
Thanks for your video man. Keep it coming!
Glad it helped and enjoy the ZF it's a great camera.
Great content...thanks for sharing.
Glad it helped and thanks for watching.
Nicely explained and these setting recommendations carry over to other Nikon models.
I wish that my 7ii had starlight.

Thanks for the video mate. Very easy to follow 👍 (subscribed to you channel)

So helpful, thank you. How would you generally compare the ZF to Z8 or is it hard to compare the two?

I have about twenty of them in my camera bag usually so if you ever bump into me make sure to ask for one :-) Enjoy the ZF it's a fantastic camera.
when you are changing the seconds, you are not showing what wheel are you turning, to change the seconds

No uncompressed raw? thats wild. No options for 12 or14 bit color depth thats kinda wack
The Z8 and Z9 don't have that option either. Lossless compression in the Nikon file format works incredibly well.
@kieranhayesphotogr i wonder why that is? I'm assuming than it shoots 14 bit by default in lossless compression
@natedagreat90 it does, Nikon gave up on uncompressed RAW files.
In fairness the Lossless system is incredibly good.
@kieranhayesphotography transferring raw files from snapbridege is way quicker too takes only like ten seconds to upload a photo
