    I relocated to Salem, and I love it. I disagree that Salem is not walkable. You do have to drive to the grocery store, but you can walk to several parks, restaurants, and offices/work. The foggy and misty weather is moody and magical. The summers are very sunny and warm.

    The rant about fires is misleading, especially the photo for this video with the Capitol building with flames. The smoke we get is usually from eastern Oregon or Canada. The entire west coast has forest fires, not just Oregon. I have never had "soot" on my vehicles, never had to wear a mask outdoors. I only remember a few times where the air quality was so poor that it was better to stay indoors. Again, the wind brings in the smoke from Canada or eastern Oregon. Since Salem is in Willamette Valley corridor, the smoke does blow in. I've been in Salem for over 30 decades...lived all over the world and choose to stay here. The rain is less now with global warming. Salem is a close drive to the beach to the west, the mountains to the east. Oregon has some of best lakes, hiking, outdoor activities on the west coast. The homeless population has worsened since 2020, as has most of the country.

    You will find me on my ebikes flying through town and ubering food. Lived here 40 years of my life(so basically all of it.) Hazelgreen only goes to Portland Road. Chemawa actually splits off and so this is why it turns into lockhaven(it is beneficial to know this because Chemawa keeps going and links to River Rd. by Safeway.) -you can also get on the Parkway over by I-5 on chemawa and it will zip you to river Road(not to be confused with River Rd. South, off of Owens) and downtown via commercial St. (Not sure if this was mentioned.) Silverton road is Highway 213 Mission street is highway 22 and Marion street will take you out the other side of the town on highway 22 State street is the divider between north and south(numbers start at 0 here.) Front street is the divider between east and west Cordon Road will eventually be similar to Lancaster as the farms leave The gangs and shootings have gotten pretty bad throughout north Lancaster(lung cancer) and in the Silverton Road area and recently the amount of trash, shopping carts, and homeless has gotten almost out of control. We are looking forward to the new Wunderland in the old Costco that will house a supreme go cart track! -not a whole lot to do for kids and hasn’t been since I was young or before. Salem is beautiful, but we try to keep people away by telling them it rains a lot, nothing to do, etc. Portland area is better 😉 -edit: we also have the world’s first humanoid robot factory here that is suppose to produce 10,000 robots a year. 😮 Keep Salem Lame!

    • @JJM_PNW
      @JJM_PNW 16 часов назад

      @@SalemOR you covered the primary reasons in your video. It’s a state government town with limited entertainment. The “So Lame” moniker was something we used when I was younger, especially in late teens and during 20s. I always hate how many restaurants in the downtown area would close early or not be open on weekends (especially Sundays). There was a “brain drain” of local younger professionals looking leave early in careers. However, Salem is quite good if you are married, settled in career and with family. Location is actually perfect (1 hour or less), from coast, big city, mountains. And still relatively affordable.

      @@SalemOR I was born in salem in 1962, I've always loved salem my entire life. I fished and trapped the river and ponds all around salem when I was young, we had what I called bums.... hobos that lived in Marion Square Park and along the Willamette River. People that rode the railroad to get from place to place. They would have camps along the river that was basically a shelter from the weather, hardly ever the trash camps like we see today. Piles of trash all over town, disassembled piles of stolen bicycles and parts. We never saw people doing drugs out in the open like I see often nowadays. I miss the salem I grew up in, and I know this could be stopped but people get too offended by real solutions. Repeal measure 110 would be a great start and stop half of the filthy messes created in town. Measure 110 is when the problem went on steroids.

    I'm from Chicago. Its a beautiful, vibrant city, BUT... Do you think you have weather here? You've got to be kidding me. How about snow so deep that you can't open your front door? How about summers so hot and humid that you can't go outside because of the mosquitos? We had torrential rains, flooding, tornados, fog so thick you can't see the car in front of you, wind chill factors of 20 degrees below zero, and frostbite. In the winter the freeways transform into sheets of ice with vehicles skidding uncontrollably and multiple accidents. By Spring cars are covered with dents and what's left of the snow has turned black from car exhaust. It's not unusual to have snow on Easter. To me, Oregon is a paradise.

    One thing to mention about choosing Salem over Portland if you are moving to Oregon is the taxes. If you make over $125,000 a year as a single filer or $200,000 for joint filers, Portland has two additional income taxes that Salem doesn't: Multnomah County Preschool for All (PFA) Personal Income Tax and Metro Supportive Housing Services (SHS) Personal Income Tax. Oregon already has a high state income tax of 9.9% and these two taxes can add an additional 2.5%-4.5% to your tax bill if you live or work in the Portland area.

    Is the mold really an issue in Oregon and do you really need a dehumidifier in your home?

    • @SalemOR
      @SalemOR 4 дня назад

      I personally haven't had many issues with mold and have never had a dehumidifier. I have had 1 client who had sever mold in the attic and that was due to poor instillation of the roof. It's not to say we don't have mold here in Oregon, it just hasn't been a large issue for me personally or professionally. However, this is why it's so important to have inspections. Inspectors will get in the attic (if there is one) and look for things like mold. If there is mold they will typically say, "hey all you need is some Killz paint" or "hey, you need mold remediation". I'd love to hear what other Salem-anders have to say about their experiences with mold.

The homeless issue is a major major part of it, but also people who litter is out of control. So many 7 eleven wrappers. It's calming tho putting on music or a podcast and zoning out, good exercise. We moved from California to Salem and I love it here. I agree it depends on where you move from and what you like. Where we lived it was way more expensive with summers that were 6 months long over 100 almost every day. Drought. Too many people, way more crime, lived in an area with a population of 500,000. We live in west salem which is way nicer than salem proper. So many pine trees and green. I hate the sun, love the overcast rainy days. If I never see another palm tree I'll be happy. I don't have allergies, love gardening and the green forests that are right down the street from my house. The hiking is outstanding, there are waterfalls 30 minutes away, and the beach is only an hour away. Earthquakes are no big deal to me, remember I'm from California. Salem is not for everyone but it definitely is for me. ❤

    I have lived in Salem for better than a decade. I drive for Lyft and Amazon. I know this area better than 99% of lifelong residents, because it's my job. That being said, I have lived in multiple zip codes. None more than 97301 NE Salem. I graduated from Chemeketa College up there, I shopped up there, and setup my business ShopReallyEZ ( you will see is on Google Maps, on Livingston Street NE) Let's talk about what I have seen: a random dead body found on Portland Rd near the Fairgrounds around State Fair time. An Arco Gas attendant got shot in the head, and beat with a shovel a few days ago on Portland Rd. Random 17-25 year old girls found shot to death in their car, left near a dumpster - across the street from Chemeketa College. I literally just the other day honked at a car obstructing traffic at a green light. They drove forward about a block then blocked traffic and pulled out guns and waved them at me, hoping I would honk again. The facts are: Per Capita- Marion County has the highest homelessness in the state. Per Capita- Marion County has 4 times more Sex Offenders than Portland does. More Arsons, 3x more thefts, just as much murder as North Portland gangland, and more drugs, gangs, graffiti, and violent crime per capita than any city in Oregon. Our jail is literally always at maximum capacity, and even class C felonies get booked and released because we don't have enough beds. The median price for apartments has went up 50-100% in the last decade in Salem. They burn down all the nice restaurants because they are on meth, BigLots in Salem is closing just like Meier and Frank/Nordstrom's/RiteAide all did because of homeless people camping on their front walkway, and they leave garbage everywhere. It's essentially a wasteland, our Governor has the Mahonia Mansion in Salem, but can't stand Salem, so she refused to move in to the Governors Mansion. And, I don't blame her! That's just a few items that you should know about before wasting your time coming here.

  • @MeatyCakes
    @MeatyCakes 8 дней назад

    Any place Isn’t for everyone, but I wouldn't wish Salem on most people. The drivers are absolutely terrible. Same with the schools, the right wingnuts, the dipwads with the oregunian stickers, the city workers who are supposed to keep areas safe that look the other way for their special club friends, the people who think the library being open is the problem, the state legislature morons who would rather hurt the state than allow a party to move the state forward/make actual improvements, the nimby-ists and other low iq dopes mishandling the needs of the unhoused, and much much more. Sounds like paradise, doesn't it, right? I can't wait to leave this festering puss filled wound on Satan's sphincter. Don’t worry...actively looking, but not taking a paycut in this overpriced economy due to businesses, such as Chipotle making twice their profits post pandemic than pre... not supposed to happen. That's not the government. That's corporate greed.

I moved away several times with different boyfriends but when the relationships came to an end and I couldn't afford to live alone I wound up living with family in Salem again and here I am stuck. Currently in a long distance relationship and he and I are hoping to move to Washington or Colorado or something.

    I'll start believing in your analysis of the livability of North Salem and Keizer when you learn how to pronounce the name of the road that runs past the Indian School. After five years of working with property, you should know. I happen to like North Salem for its ethnic diversity and its ease of access to downtown. I find some of the objections to it a bit "classist." Yes, it's a less wealthy area, with all that entails. But you don't have to worry about snobbishness-- it feels down-to-earth. North Salem and Keizer are a lower-middle and middle class areas, with pockets of poverty. There's a lot of older homes close in, with newer developments on the outskirts. You need to see the neighborhood to see if it works for you. This is true for South and West Salem as well-- the good and bad areas are very close together. Some close-in neighborhoods, like Grant and Englewood, are very charming and affordable. Highland, where I live, can change street to street. My house is in the area you suggested was somewhat of a food desert-- we have a decent Fred Meyer nearby, but the Winco in Keizer is not a full Winco, it's a Waremart. This is annoying to North residents. Be aware of the schools. Admittedly, there are some to be avoided in North Salem, though North Salem High is not one of them, despite its reputation as the "ghetto" school. Its gang problems are not nearly as bad as Sprague's, strangely enough. Keizer is not part of Salem-- it was a city formed in the 1950s in order to save the area from the higher taxes connected with Salem. It doesn't have access to Salem's excellent public library, unless you pay a fee. The services and roads are not as well-supported, but there are many pleasant, wooded neighborhoods and of course the taxes are lower. Lancaster Drive and River Road are what are known as "stroads"-- an awful combination of street and road, mandatory thoroughfares with strip malls and congested traffic. South Salem has its stroad along Commercial St SE. While there is some problems with crime in the apartments just off of Lancaster, it is hardly unsafe and doesn't compare with the problems with 82nd Avenue in Portland.

      Thank you for your detailed feedback. I appreciate the time you took to share your perspective. Your points about North Salem’s diversity and accessibility to downtown are important and add valuable context. Your insights into the neighborhood dynamics, such as the mix of older homes and new developments, as well as the challenges and strengths of different areas, are very helpful. It's clear that each neighborhood has its own story and nuances. Understanding these nuances helps paint a more complete picture of the area. Thank you for sharing and helping others decide if Salem is the right place for them.

    My take as someone who has lived in Salem/Keizer for the last 23 years. I agree that the restaurant scene is only "okay". Fine dining is not something Salem has been known for and probably never will be. Mexican restaurants are the most common ethnic food you will find in the city. The one thing that the Salem area has that Portland doesn't is an In-N-Out Burger at Keizer Station. I've never seen that place without a long line of cars wrapped around it. Shopping is again only okay. You can find all the basic necessities without an issue. High-end retail stores are not something you are generally going to find in Salem. Grocery stores are decent as long as you don't expect to shop at Whole Foods or New Seasons. South Salem has a Trader Joes and a couple of independent natural food grocery stores that would have to substitute for those two stores. The homeless issue is by no means solved but it has gotten better compared to 3-4 years ago. I used to pass three good sized homeless camps back then that were finally cleared out and haven't returned. The recent Supreme Court ruling on homelessness may make it easier to evict homeless campers and keep them out of the city. We will have to wait and see. Crime is not too bad, especially compared to Portland. Take sensible precautions like you should wherever you live, and you should be fine. Oregon is recriminalizing hard drugs this September so that will hopefully help law enforcement keep the peace better. The climate is typical Willamette Valley weather, although it is changing. Climate change means we get fewer snowy/below freezing days in the winter and more 90+ days in the summer. A lot of the older houses and apartments didn't get central AC when they were built because summers were milder back then. Some kind of AC is really needed now. We had 5 consecutive days over 100 earlier this July and in June 2022 set an all-time record high of 117.

      @@SalemOR the city isn't bad in my opinion. Has it's issues. Like everywhere. But Salem itself isn't too bad. I wish we would do something about the drug n homeless problem but Salem isn't alone in that. The hospital though is an issue. 1 Dr working the emergency department at night with hundreds of patients at times. It's one of the busiest hospitals on the west coast and severely lacking in management. Issues w violent patients. Bad shifts for nurses and doctors and even security. Frequently have to work OT. Salem needs another hospital. Another emergency department. Don't recommend working there. Or going as a patient. Go to Silverton or Stayton or even OHSU instead. If I was having a heart attack in front of Salem hospital id ask the emts to take me to another ED.
