Good review of the differences, but they are still in the same neck of the woods. We have a home in Silverton. We are retired so commuting does not factor into our decision. For us the small town atmosphere is relaxing. Our grandchildren live here and we find that we worry less about the bad influences they may encounter. Regarding the question on homelessness. There are no tent cities and we seldom see them. Politically, you have both ends of the spectrum, rural conservatives and progressive liberals.

Where did you live before Silverton and what were the main factors made you decide Silverton was the place to move to?

@@SalemOR Our situation is unique. We are from the Bay Area. We needed to find a home in the Salem area to help care for our Grandson. That was about 10 years ago. So Silverton came to us more than we found Silverton. Silverton seemed to be a good choice. I had reservations, having never lived outside an urban area. Now I find it a calm and refreshing change. It has been a great place for our Grandchildren to be raised. We do not live in Silverton full time but do spend a lot of time there. I can hear some folks complaining about Californians now. However, we have never felt out of place in Silverton and feel that we are considered locals even if we still drive around with Cali plates. Now Portland, that is a different situation.

Great perspective. What do you think has been the biggest change you've seen happen in Silverton over the past 10 years?

What is the homeless situation in Silverton? We're retired, avid gardeners, and want out of North Idaho winters.

You would love Silverton if you're retired, gardeners and want a quintessential PNW life. Have you visited before?
There are homeless in Silverton, just as there is in all Oregon towns/cities. Our robust social services are mostly located in Salem, which means there are more resources located outside of Silverton than inside of Silverton.
I'm hoping those who live in Silverton can share their perspectives and experiences to paint the full picture.

If you're still looking at Silverton, we do have some homeless drifters that travel through but don't stay long. We also have a food bank, small shelter, and the Episcopal church offers some temporary tiny homes for women. We're a community that works hard to offer resources for people, but generally we don't get a lot because we're far out of the way. We know our neighbors and do what we can to support the community!
