Hello! I am The Cairns Railfan and I am a trainspotter located in Far North Queensland in Cairns just like my name says. I love trains and I love recording them! When I’m able to upload, I usually upload on Sundays. I'm also the creator of a small ongoing series on my channel called "Engines of Queensland Rail" which is heavily inspired by AmtrakGuy365's "Engines of Amtrak" series. I hope you enjoy my channel and videos!

An Unusual Savannahlander Chase! | The Cairns Railfan
Hello everyone and welcome to a new video where we partake in an unusual chase of the Savannahlander! The Savannahlander is a tourist passenger train operated by Cairns Kuranda Steam who use leased Queensland Rail 2000 Classes which were built from the 1950s-1970s to operate the train and have been doing so since 1995 and has replaced the loco-hauled "Last Great Train Ride" Cairns - Forsayth mixed freight & passenger train. Nowadays it usually operates weekly on the 3ft 6in (1,067mm) Tablelands System in Queensland, Australia from March-November departing Cairns at Wednesday 6:30am and returning on Saturday 6:30pm heading as far west as Forsayth with overnight stops along the way. Thank you very much for this provision of this very interesting and informative video presentation. We are very grateful for your help in telling us about this train and the route travelled. The fact that this is a rail motor that is used on this line means that the railway does not suffer from too much wear and tear as it is a lightweight design. The beauty of it being a stainless steel body means that it does not suffer from corrosion which will help to keep the maintenance costs down. Hopefully it will be able to get back to its full route sooner rather than later and it would be great if the line could get its sugar mill traffic back too as the more traffic the line has the more money will be there to provide for the railway's maintenance. We are most grateful to you for this pleasing video.
@@johnsmart964 Thanks for your comment! Unfortunately I don’t think the sugar trains to port will start up again anytime soon; as much as I wish they would I don’t think the Tablelands Mill has interests in it they just do truck transport now. But like I said the branch to the mill is still classified as “open” so still receives occasional maintenance so the opportunity is always there! Also not sure if you saw my pinned comment but unfortunately it has been announced that Einasleigh - Forsayth section of the Tablelands System will not be reinstated for the rest of the year which is a real shame. It is actually unclear if it will reopen or not next year. Reasons stated include lack of funding and subpar maintenance alongside an apparent increase in damage this year thanks to Cyclone Jasper. Unfortunately relatively “small” closures such as this one haven’t been unheard of in recent times as Stanthorpe - Wallangarra was closed a few months ago now in south Queensland; reason being stated due to bushfire induced bridge damage.
I'm the fitter behind the Cummins engines and Allison transmissions. Frenching the ditch light was from my car building days. Even the barriers between the cars is my design, we kept destroying the original lattice barriers on the curves the Sav travels on. I spent 7 years as their fitter from 2004. I sorted the wheel chair lifts from a company who had to get them from the USA because of how far they had to lower. I have many pictures of my time there
@@woztorana That’s so cool!! I assume the ditch lights were modern QR requirements? 2000 Classes in regular service didn’t have them; and I’ve noticed other 2000 Classes that have taken back to mainline running (eg. Outback Aussie Tours at Longreach and DownsSteam Tourist Railway) have fit marker lights as well. I think the Mary Valley Rattler’s 2000s also have the marker lights too.
@@thecairnsrailfan the ditch lights we beat the standard. We fitted them for added safety given Cairns drivers and level crossings. Same as the Yellow wings. Originally they were gold, and were gold during my time there. However I am lead to believe that they were painted yellow for vision. Just as the 11 class has the yellow Buffer plates ( which I originally painted 01 and 05)
@@woztorana Wow that’s awesome work! Very interesting!
He's back!!!!!!
Sorry to viewers of this video if you get ads on this one. I didn’t put them there; copyright claim came in on the music that was played out of the passing ute in the Great Wheelbarrow Race segment and I believe has forced ads on the video which is a real pain! EDIT: For those wanting an update on the Einasleigh-Forsayth section reopening; well we just got the announcement that it will remain closed for the rest of 2024 and to me at least it’s unclear if it will re-open again next year in 2025 but let’s hope it does!
Great video, William! Good shots, editing, maps, and expert commentary.

Wow that steam train looks sigma
Sure does🤪
May I say how delighted we are to see this most excellent video production and it was great to hear your narration has returned! These have to be the most impressive videos and always so clear and bright. It was a sad case to see at the railway station it had one of its shelters removed and only the frame was remaining, it was possibly receiving maintenance but I am sure that the passengers on that platform would appreciate being sheltered from the sun! It was great to see the steam locomotive at work, it will surely need that tank full of water as they will not be many places where it could obtain water as the old water cranes would been removed long ago. Thanks again for all the great work that you do, it is very much appreciated.
Thanks for your comment, I’m glad you enjoyed it! I believe that un-sheltered spot at Toowoomba Railway Station has been like that for a while; as that lane isn’t used for passenger trains anymore and is commonly used as a spot to store diesels for maintenance runs and other maintenance related works. Toowoomba Railway Station is such a gorgeous station; probably one of the best looking in Queensland and a relic of a bygone rail era. Now it’s only served by a Queensland Rail passenger train 4 times a week which is the Westlander doing its twice a week service from Brisbane to Charleville where it’s usually there late in the evening or early in the morning. Other than that; heritage passenger services may use it on their runs which is a common sight in the southwest between Ipswich and Warwick where as you mentioned they usually always carry water tanks as well due to lack of water tower / cranes in the modern rail era! Thanks again for your comment!

@@birgitmaloney7637 Hopefully after the next video. Tomorrow I will upload some trains in the south-west of Queensland including a steam train! After that; the next video will be on The Savannahlander up here around the Far North where the video will cover chasing that train from Almaden to Kuranda. I hope you can look forward to that!
that engine looks like DJ1229 from New Zealand lol
@@TheREALPoriruaTrainspotter Yeah it sure does! It’s actually really interesting; as the Cairns Rail livery is actually directly inspired by / correlated to DJ1229. Cairns Kuranda Steam (who operate The Savannahlander passenger service and the Cairns Rail cement shunts as seen in this video) is actually owned by Mainline Steam Heritage Trust in New Zealand who own DJ1229. They’ve gotten the contract from Queensland Rail (for the Savannahlander) and Pacific National (for the cement shunting) to run these Cairns services under the CKS name which is very interesting and have done so for many years now. Thanks for your comment!
@@thecairnsrailfan Oh wow 😯 I didnt know that till now lol DJ1228 also has the same livery too just with the writing on the long hood 😅
@@TheREALPoriruaTrainspotter Awesome!
Thank you very much for providing us with this excellent video. The trains sound great when they depart from the station and they look good too. One wonders if this class if train will continue to be constructed since Alstom have taken over Bombardier. It is sad that the company was taken over like that as it means that there is less choice available for those who require new rolling stock. It is a little strange not hearing you narrating!
@@johnsmart964 No problem, thanks for your comment! I don’t know much about overseas rail manufactures; but I would hope Alstom still chooses to sell and manufacture Bombardier designs. Yeah I haven’t done a video without narration for a very long time; but not to worry as the next following videos will have narration once again!

not going to lie the green and yellow locos sound like they have horns off volvo trucks
I think there's a pack called a pantograph
Yes; Sydney’s electrified rail system contacts the electric trains through their pantograph part!😄
Thank you very much for this excellent video presentation which is extremely well narrated. You had a good combination of passenger and freight. The train that passed which is based on the British Rail class 43 was interesting as where I live we have these still running in daily service, the last train operating company to do so, though there have been some sold for use in Mexico and others have gone to Nigeria for use as suburban trains! We hope that you did not get too wet but at least it kept it cooler and keeps the vegetation nice and green. Take care and we are most grateful to you for providing us with this excellent video.
Thank you!! Yes; it’s certainly a testament to the British Rail Class 43s engineering that they’re still in service in some places after so long!

Why are u not making a other video
Don’t worry, I am making another video😄 It’s currently being worked on; sometimes I’m busy and don’t have a new video to upload all the time. I have been busy recently but it’s all good as the next video of Sydney Trains at Eastwood is being worked on so it’ll be out eventually!🙂
Maybe build a higher bridge / railway with only 2 pylons on either side of the river which would allow debris to clear.
What about the western Australia train carrying international

Fabulous shots TCR. I really want to get up to SJM at some point during the crush. It looks like fascinating network, especially the branch down to the docks at Mourilyan Harbour.
Thank you! Yes, SJM is quite fascinating with their large network and fleet of locos. I too want to get some more stuff of their locos out at the Mourilyan way!
Thank you, you have just explained it on the video, I should have waited a bit longer!
Thank you very much for providing us with this very interesting and informative video presentation which is very much appreciated. We are absolutely delighted to see such a tram service as well as the suburban rail overhead. I notice the metal strip in the centre of the tram track, is this where they pick up power from as it is noticed that there are no overhead contact wires and pantographs on the tram cars?
No problem, thanks for your comment! Glad to see your other comment that you got to the bit about the APS system and how it works.😄

How is the sugar cane train
@@birgitmaloney7637 If you mean the one at Herberton then it’s still being worked on, it will take another year or two to be completed. If you’re referring to sugarcane trains in service around Cairns then there’s doing well aside from the northern Cairns damage of course. They’ve started driver training recently for the upcoming season starting in a few weeks! Some maintenance trains have been out too!
Do you know willmar
How long is the sugar cane train
Yeah my house went underwater and i live in Cairns North lol.
Wow! I hope all has been well since then!
I never realize how many miles the mill has, oh my goodness. I thought Mulgrave had maybe 10 miles and three or four locomotives but nope, on your map everything yellow is a rail line and many more locomotives. very impressive Thank you
No problem, thanks for your comment! QLD sugarcane railways are very impressive and extensive! I find them to be very underrated, many people don’t realise how large these systems and operations are and I’ve wanted to make a video all about the sugarcane mill industry and operations in QLD as a whole but haven’t been able to get around to it properly. There is just over 15 operational rail operation mills in QLD I think; combined they have around 2,000-4,000km worth of track I think! Very large networks indeed. The largest locomotive fleet I am aware of is South Johnstones. They’re owned by the same company that operates Mulgrave Mill (MSF Sugar) and Mulgrave is connected with the South Johnstone network. The mill itself being located just south of Innisfail. I believe SJ has over 20 locomotives in service if I remember correctly!
@@thecairnsrailfan Sorry for my unchristian language but GOD DAMN, that's a lot of track. Never thought, nothing we got compares to that in America.
@@RyanHatterer-Ryanns999 Haha all good mate, yeah it’s fascinating seeing the size of the private 2ft gauge networks in Queensland for sugarcane; especially because 2ft gauge is mainly a railway practice left in the past in other countries becoming abandoned or entering preservation status so the scale of QLDs 2ft gauge sugarcane networks that still make profits to run are truly something to behold! 😄
Thank you very much for this fascinating video presentation which is very interesting and informative and very much appreciated. Your videos are always worth waiting for as they are always of the very highest quality, with most excellent quality of narration, too. We are delighted that they will be able to bring the sugar cane to the mill through this alternative way and at least they will be using the remaining part of the railway. We are looking forward, with great interest, to these other aspects of the railway scene, that you have planned for us. We are absolutely delighted to receive this video at this time and are grateful for the immense amount of work that you put into these productions. Thanks, I’m glad you liked it!!
All the dieseles we being from south Africa and bought it all way to Australia

@@birgitmaloney7637 Thank you!
Seems to me that the cane railway bridge over the Barron River is a vital part of the Mill's infrastructure, so it seems logical that it will be rebuilt sooner, rather than later, and knowing that the old bridge couldn't withstand the force of the river in that cyclone, then building it stronger and a meter or so higher would be the way to go.
Good points; funnily enough the bridge that collapsed was a “flood resistant” design which unfortunately I think I may have forgot to mention in the video but anyways this means they’ll have to rebuild an even more flood resistant design with potential features that you brought up!
Will, Mel and I are currently watching this video. We are both very impressed and extremely proud of you. This video, the editing and your commentary is extremely detailed and very professional. Mel reckons this is very much university level stuff. Good on ya mate!🤠
