- Hello everyone, welcome to a brand new video where we see Cairns' arguably hardest regularly operating train to catch due to it's constantly changing schedule!
The Cairns Rail Cement Train is operated by Cairns Rail, owned by Cairns Kuranda Steam who run The Savannahlander. Cairns Rail employs a fleet of Emu Bay Railway 11 Classes made in Queensland in the late 1960s and early 1970s by Walkers Limited but sent right away for work in Tasmania before being brought back to Queensland in the early 2000s.
Cement for Cairns is often transported by train from Gladstone and / or Townsville and brought up north by Pacific National. The Pacific National freight train arrives at Cairns in the early hours of the morning and the Cairns Rail Cement Train gets to work shunting the full cement wagons at Pacific National's Woree Railway Yard and to the cement siding between Portsmith Railway Yard and Cairns Railway Station around 4-6am where the cement is then unloaded into silos.
However, later in the day around 12-2pm the train gets to work again and transports the now empty cement wagons to Cairns Railway Station to shunt around the wagons and bring them back to Pacific National's Woree Railway Yard to be placed on the southbound Pacific National freight train. The 12-2pm are the operations we will be covering in this video. I hope you enjoy!

I've taken some great footage of trains and I've always enjoyed the friendly drivers who blow there horn's etc. I've been curious off the cement other freight trains. Thank you very much for this very interesting and informative video presentation which is very much appreciated. The Cairns Rail locomotives are in great condition, it almost looks like they polish the locomotives! They have a great colour scheme too. Cairns Railway station looks very modern, there will not be many major railway stations that have freight trains having the locomotive run round in them.
Your videos are always extremely well produced and the subjects are always of great interest to us as well. It is helped also by you having such great scenery around as well. As ever we always look forward to your broadcasts.

Cairns Railway Station was completely rebuilt and relocated slightly in 1996 which is why it has such a modern design!

Great video, didn't know that train existed, very interesting and good information. The Walkers loco's resemble the NSW 73 class, also built by Walkers and Caterpillar powered diesel hydraulic. As an aside, one would have thought in a very hot tropical place that Cairns is, the locomotives would have been painted in something other than black, a colour that draws the heat. Enjoyed your collection and details, well done.😉
Thank you! Yes, I understand why you never knew this one ran at Cairns. Like I mentioned in the video, it only runs during early mornings before most people get up and then does a short run around midday so it’s certainly hard to catch if you don’t know when or where to look! Just over 5 years ago we stayed in Cairns on either side of our Savannahlander trip. I took a photo of the cement siding without knowing what it was and without any rolling stock or a locomotive. Maybe next time we get to Cairns I'll be in luck, Melbourne at the end of this month and on the Ghan next August so it maybe a while.

Awesome to hear! I hope you do get lucky and see the train in the siding once you come up to Cairns again. It’s a pretty unique train to see, moving or not!
Hi mate! Can I request a video from you? My son would love to see more of the Queensland Rail train 'tilt train', we try to catch it around Cairns but we don't see it much! We often go to the depot to see the Kuranda Train come back in the arvos and see that the tilt train is already there.

I'll see if I can get some videos of the Spirit of Queensland (the Tilt Train you refer to) for a video then by the end of the year as admittedly I cover it very little on this channel and it deserves some more recognition. Also if you would like some tips on trying to find the Spirit of Queensland, I strongly recommend taking a look at the timetable for the train and the service updates on Queensland Rail Travel's website.

For the Cairns area, when heading north the Spirit of Queensland gets at Innisfail at 12:40pm, Babinda at 1:17pm, Gordonvale at 1:55pm and Cairns at 2:30pm. After it arrives at Cairns, it heads to the Portsmith Railway Yard to stay overnight.
Heading south to Brisbane, the train leaves Cairns at 9:35am, then gets to Gordonvale at 10:01am, Babinda at 10:45am and Innisfail at 11:18am.
The Spirit of Queensland rarely runs on time so this is where the service updates comes in and is very useful. It has live updates on an estimated time the tilt train will be at next. So for example, if it is 30 minutes late heading north it will change the arrival time at Gordonvale to 2:25pm. Refresh the page and the times will update as the train progresses. Also please make sure to not mix it up with the other tabs that say "Tilt Train". That refers to the Electric Tilt Train that runs from Brisbane to Rockhampton. The Diesel Tilt Train is the "Spirit of Queensland" which is what you are looking for. 😄
One final note for the timetable for the Spirit of Queensland in the Cairns area. If a place on the timetable has a ^ next to it, it means that it will only stop there if someone has booked a stop there. For example, Cairns and Innisfail are mandatory stops that the train has to make. The train will just pass through Gordonvale and Babinda if no one is getting off or on there though. The service updates should adjust accordingly if the train stops at a place like Gordonvale or Babinda.

@@TheREALPoriruaTrainspotter Yeah it sure does! It’s actually really interesting; as the Cairns Rail livery is actually directly inspired by / correlated to DJ1229.
Cairns Kuranda Steam (who operate The Savannahlander passenger service and the Cairns Rail cement shunts as seen in this video) is actually owned by Mainline Steam Heritage Trust in New Zealand who own DJ1229. They’ve gotten the contract from Queensland Rail (for the Savannahlander) and Pacific National (for the cement shunting) to run these Cairns services under the CKS name which is very interesting and have done so for many years now.
