Logic Pro: Studio Tour
It’s Episode 150! Firstly, a huge thank you to all of you who have followed, subscribed, asked questions, got involved, bought courses on Teachable and been part of this growing community. I’m grateful for your wisdom, encouragement and enthusiasm. As this is a bit of a milestone, I’ve dispensed with the usual format to show you around my studio instead. I’ll talk a little bit about my rig, how I use it and why there are two separate ‘ends’ to my room.

Logic Pro: Creating Mix Space: Top End
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.14 дней назад
We’re returning to the theme of creating mix space this week, moving on from the previous episodes in this mini-series (Low End, Pads and Low Mid Range), ruclips.net/p/PL6JM7SQmyRYyAjkEtGvWiMvGj25NQPiPt to analyse what happens when we overload our mixes with too much Treble. Particularly if you’re working with Percussion and Drum loops, it’s amazing how quickly things can get out of hand. Many ...
Logic Pro: Ideas Machine Template
Просмотров 3,6 тыс.21 день назад
We tend to think about Templates as places where we can get sounds organised into categories where we can return, time after time, to be greeted with sounds we know and trust. Templates are great for kick-starting the creative process and they save you masses of time setting up each new sound from scratch every time you want to start making music. But what about the idea of a Template as a deli...
Logic Pro: Sequenced Parallel Distortion
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.28 дней назад
This week, I’m going to take you inside the world of ‘tension underscore’; a popular musical genre for Directors and Editors making TV shows, when something musically dark and propulsive can be useful, helping to drive a scene. There are lots of ways in which you can go beyond the obvious when it comes to making sounds like this. I’m going to ‘sequence’ a Parallel Distortion channel, by which I...
Logic Pro: Propulsive Pianos

Rhythmic, undulating piano patterns are hugely popular resources for TV, film and game composers, as well as being a favourite of those writing Ambient Music or composers looking for gentle, warm textures. Plug-ins like Native Instruments’ Noire and Spitfire Audio’s Stratus are examples of the kind of gentle, rolling piano libraries which can blend beautifully with strings, electronics and even...
Logic Pro: Multiple Filters

OK, I admit it. I had my head turned by another plug-in. A third-party one. And yes, my glance lingered too long. But I’m hoping you’ll forgive me because the lessons I learnt whilst in its company I’ve brought back to Logic this week. What happens when one Filter plug-in feeds another? And what happens when that second Filter feeds a third? I’m going to show you how the use of LFOs and Envelop...

I am in the same boat as the above person I have been in and changed my preference to receive emails but nowt as yet. If it’s not too much trouble, could you send me the email ref discount. Sorry for being such an old duffer.
Really enjoyed the stream, but I have a few questions: 1) Have you ever cheated on Logic, with Live or Bitwig? 2) Is it possible to route Logic in a way so that Live Loops could record live performances, from played-in MIDI instruments? And most importantly: 3) Is there a protocol in place for how to navigate clashing dates/events? Xmas falls on a Wednesday this year, which means a clash between 'Disco Wednesday' and 'Musical Christmas'. My intuition would suggest that since disco is indeed music, that there should be no conflict. But I've been wrong before, and I'm starting to get a bit flustered not knowing to write on the invitations :( Thanks!
Already using Match EQ but you've refined my understanding of the flexibility of application of the curve once you've got it. Thanks Jono!
Great summary, thanks Jono!
Your speakers look like Johnny 5's face, lol 😅 I'm an 80's baby, so it just stood out to me. Thank you for the tip bro. This really helped.
great explanation, but i'm stuck with a problem : my hardware synth records and gives audio when i play, but when i play back the track, there's no sound.. am i missing something?
👍🇩🇪
Thank you so much.
Hi Jono, quick heads up, I purchased the first scoring course,, but didn't get a email on the discount code for the new one. Perhaps others were in the same boat. Cheers.
Hi John. I think you might have opted out of receiving emails when you signed up on Teachable. Which is quite understandable as we all get far too many marketing messages! But I’m only ever going to email when there’s news or an offer, so if you’re willing and able to change your email preference on Teachable, you’ll receive those details. I can email you separately to the address you signed up with, I think. I’ll try that this morning. If you haven’t received an email from me in the next couple of hours, do check your spam folder and if that hasn’t worked, drop me another note here. Thanks, as always, for your ongoing support. 👍
@@jonobuchananmusic Thanks for the prompt reply, email received , all good in the hood!
huhuuu your vid always amazinggg
Thank you so much!
Top quality as ever, thank you so much x
Thank you! 🙏
How would I make to repeat a 3/4 followed by a 4/4 please? My song is in 7/8 but in terms of 'feel' it is really a South Indian 1-2-3 / 1-2-3-4 repeating for the entire duration of the song.
Hi and thanks for your question. Frustratingly, there is no way (that I know of) to copy and paste Time Signature changes, either in the Main Page or in the Event List. So you have two options! Either you can work in 7/8 (or 7/4 at double-speed) or you'll have to map out the first bar of your track as a 3/8 (or 3/4) and the second bar as a 4/8 (or 4/4) and the repeat that process for every subsequent odd and even-numbered Bar. Move the Playhead within the Main Page and enter the Time Signature that you want. Alternatively, open the Event List and you can use the + button to enter a new Time Signature there too. Sorry there isn't a quicker way.
@@jonobuchananmusic Thank you very much Jono for your prompt reply. 7/8 it shall be. On the metronome, is there any way that I can accent beat numbers 1, 4 and 6 please? That will give me the feel that I need whilst tracking...
Another interesting question! It's certainly possible to stress the down-beat and each sub-division with separate strengths but I don't know if you can do that per-sub division. If you can, it'll be under the Metronome button in the Transport Bar; hold this down and select Metronome Settings. If not, you can program your own Click using Logic's own Klopfgeist Instrument (check out the Utility folder inside Logic's collection of Instruments). Just set this up as a Software Instrument and you can program clicks however you want them. Just mute that Track whenever you don't need it.
Hi Jono, thank you for the course. I just rolled in and exciting to learn a lot from you. I just wanted make a small remark. You mentioned you are using the Monogram faders and I looked them up. It seems that the community is frustrated about the delivery of the goods. People are waiting for over 2 years and have not got any products yet. I just wanted to get this out and that people who are interested may consider other options! Cheers and thank you for your contribution to the community. Cheers, Hendrik
Hi Hendrik, thanks so much and welcome to the Teachable community! Thanks too for letting me know about the Monogram controllers - absolutely, it sounds like other options might be better at this moment in time. On Teachable, some people have been discussing their Controller preferences in the Community section, so now that you're signed up, head there and feel free to add your choices and experiences too.
Watch a lot of your stuff Jono and we’ve spoke before. This is actually an extremely powerful tool to have for writing and producing. Possibilities are endless
They sure are, Jakey. Thanks for your message.
@ I must admit Jono, it takes a bit of fiddling with the notes of most vocals to get a decent sound when transporting it to another instrument. I find most human voices have a lot of vibrato and go in and out of notes a lot
You’re good for my marriage 😅 b/c… … you save me a fortune 💸 … so long as I remember to check your channel whenever I get the itch to buy a plug-in. No need. Jono says, “Use this stock Logic one.”
Happy to help! 🤣
Congrats on #150! Your channel has been my go to for all things Logic… and I suspect many others as well. You’ve always done an amazing job at explaining complex issues in a very digestible and entertaining manner!
Thanks so much, that’s very kind.
Really enjoyed the studio tour! It’s always fascinating to see how others work / create in their own spaces. Your content is top-shelf, cream of the crop, Grade-A, 5-Stars… and it’s always appreciated! 👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you!
11:33 - Oh mate now you’ve done it… you’ve just released the Kraken due to the Moog / Mohg pronunciations! My former assistant once got into a hotly argued debate over the correct pronunciation, so much so that “war of words” turned into a physical altercation. My friend needed up getting arrested for attempted homicide, and the victim of his assault ended up suffering from PTSD, his wife left him for not being able to defend his beliefs (odd but ok), and both are now homeless living on the streets selling illicit substance since both lost their jobs. Truly a sad story, and one that is completely fabricated. 😅 I’ve heard it pronounced both ways, but if I remember correctly I think I’ve heard employees over at Moog pronounce it with the “long O” sound… instead of the “oo” sound. In reality, we may never know the correct pronunciation lol… we just live our Moog’s though 😅
🫣🤣 My eyes got wider and wider as I read your story… delighted to hear it was a lovely piece of creative writing. Yes, I believe the Moog Rogue synth was so-named in part so that the ‘rhyme’ told everyone how Moog should be pronounced. But as others have said, cows say ‘moo’… 😉
absolutely amazing
Thank you! Glad it was helpful.
Cheers Jono, enjoyed that, and thanks for everything.
Thanks Oli. You’re welcome.
Cool explain, thank you !
Thanks! 🙏
Wow!
🙏
Very interesting. Hope I‘m able to try this out!
It's a really useful technique for all kinds of sounds but, in my opinion, Vocals particularly.
What we are missing is live scale quantize like Ableton and now FL Studio. Basically it won't let you play notes off key on your midi keyboard. Sure you can get that on some midi keyboards but it would be nice to have in Logic.
It sure would. Doesn't feel like it would be too complicated a MIDI FX to build either, so let's hope it comes soon, as you say.
Nice one -it's something I rarely use in Logic . Thank you JB
You're welcome!
My favourite watch each week - thanks.
Thank you so much, Ian. That means a lot.
Nice
Thanks!
👏🏻👍🏻🙏🏻
🙏🙏🙏
Very cool. Do we do this before sending to master?
If you're having your Tracks professionally Mastered, no, I wouldn't do add of what Mastering Assistant does! I think this is a great plug-in if you're wanting to put an extra layer of 'finishing' into your own Mixes, or a rough approximation of what a Mastering Engineer might do. But dedicated, more than one-dial-per-function Mastering tools, overseen by dedicated Mastering Engineers working in the right rooms with the right monitors, will always produce a better job. And they won't be able to 'un-pick' the processes which Mastering Assistant will add, so a completely 'clean' mix file from you will always be their preference.
Niiiiiice, I've been trying to introduce some Filter and Flanger into my synths!! This'll do!! Thank you Jono ya legend!! Just finished your course series in Fader Pro also, AWESOME!! 👍
Ah, great! Thank you so much. I'm glad this video was helpful and that the FaderPro courses were too.
Ha ha!! Way ahead of ya on that one, JB!! I use Step FX in almost all my remixes!! Looking forward to your live show AND your Logic 11 review!! Thanks for everything, JB!!
I'm happy to be late to the party!
De-LI-cious! 🤤
Glad you enjoyed it!
This is one of the BEST Logic tips channels.
Also, play with the Mix knob. Super cool.
One of...? ; ) Jokes aside, thank you so much, that means a lot.
Great stuff. I did not know Logic had this. Thanks 🙏
You're welcome, Matt.
Happy 150th Jono!!! It is a pleasure to watch you! Keep teaching we really need it. As for the question you always ask at the end: "If you have any subject you would like to learn on this channel..."? Here is one; I am struggling with my Mac studio M1 max hard drive as it is already pretty full and I have watched a ton of videos on why and how to keep my 1TB Mac in a healthy size. So, could you be the guy who finally explains how to use external drives as a storage system. I know there are many ways but what I would like to understand is how my Mac works with data and files and especially with external drives. For exemple, if I use an external drive for my Logic projects do I have to delete them from my Hard drive...? Stuff like that is what I find confusing because of the way most people explain how to do it. It's about more fundamental knowledge really... Anyhow I hope this is not too convoluted.
This is a great question, and one I'll happily look at on the Channel. Many thanks for the suggestion.
Happy 150th Jono. Great tour of your studio and thank you for years of relly the best Logic videos.
Thank you so much - that’s very kind.
Printing as audio very sensible as synths come and go! Great vid
Thank you! 🙏
You dear sir, MUST have been wearing the Jodhpurs of Exceptional Invention when you came up with these techniques. Great information as usual. Thanks Jono!
Ha! They’re jodhpurs I’m honoured to wear. Thanks so much.
Loved it! And thank YOU Jono!
My pleasure - thanks so much.
I have a question, maybe I don't understand if it can be done. how do I make the sum of the tracks I export sound at -6db (example) thanks
This is a great question and one I'm happy to answer in an episode on the Channel. Please leave it with me.
@@jonobuchananmusic thank you!!
Thank you for keep teaching us and keeping your passion alive. Atleast i can buy you a cup of coffee!!! ❤
That is incredibly kind. Thank you so much. 🙏
i LOVE musical Christmas!!
🤣
your studio tour was great good luck about all the work you do in your studio
Thank you and thank you!
I love these videos
Thanks so much.
To make it act like filter freak ive send my signal to 2 different aux Each aux than has an auto filter and lets say each it's a band pass type Than i make sure the aux has a track on the arrangement view From there I add a pattern region on the aux track and in the step sequence i hit "learn note" and than I move the cutt off filter and can than use the step sequencer to automate the cut of knob or any parameter and make some cool rhythms Im thinking of having these 2 busses in my template so i can quickly send any source ro them and have it already setup and mapped
To simplify it further I think you can group the 2 aux as 1 bus and put the pattern region on that bus so you have 1 step sequencer controlling both plugins It's not as intuitive but it works, it's really has me thinking the different ways I can manipulate audio
Love this!
Love this too! Thanks so much for sharing your approaches.
Best videos on the net. Have you ever used any other DAW ? Do you ever notice in logic when you edit Audio parts on the fly it takes a second or so for the change to take place. I usually just stop and start the track again then the change takes place straight away. It does my head in. Any other DAW the audio changes straight away on the fly. It also happens when I change parameters on synths for example but not that often. Thanks
That's incredibly kind, thank you David. Yes, my understanding is that the way the original audio drivers for Logic were written - back in the day - the time it takes for an audio edit to correct or play back accurately is kind of 'baked in'. In other words, it would take a complete rewrite of the audio engine to make that not the case. (My apologies to Emagic and Apple if I've got that wrong). It is frustrating but, you're right, either pressing Stop, or looping a section and just kind of accepting that it won't be until the second time around that any audio edits will play back accurately is kind of just how it is. I must say I don't have that issue with Synths or Automation - all changes there are picked up on the fly. But the slight Audio edit/adjustment lag is real, no matter how capable the spec of your machine.
@ top man thank you !!!
Hey JB, thank you for the rundown. Could you explain in more detail why you use the line mixer and not the individual inputs on the Apollo? Too few inputs or for better sound quality/ analog summing?
Hi Greg. Exactly that - I have two channels of the Apollo taken up with preamp signals from the Britstrip and the UA LA-610, which leaves only 6 from the synths, so I bought the Line Mixer as a simple way to have them all connected into a stereo pair of inputs. Thanks for your question.
Thank you for the fast reply!
