    A helpful tip for you... Use the masking technique but use an aerosol plastic primer, then use acrylic spray paint. Peel the large part of the masking off as normal, then cover the whole piece with hi-tac tape and squeegee it down. When you peel it off it will remove all the small centres.

    I understand that you would not get the same assembly method, but what about using 3D printing for the hulls and laser-cutting for the masts? Should solve all the problems with bending and (AFAIK) you don't need to ship stuff in booster packs...

    • @meepleswoodworking
      @meepleswoodworking 5 месяцев назад

      Personally, the finish with a 3D Printed part isn't nearly as good as a laser cut part, and 3D printing takes much longer to manufacture than lasering. Not to mention, from a process standpoint, if I want to make a ship, I now need to upload a file and prepare two separate machines rather than one. It's far more efficient to run one manufacturing process than two, so all 3D printed or all laser cut unless there is a specific reason to do both. On something this small, you'd spend more time in setup of the files than actual manufacturing. There are certainly folks that make fully 3D printed ships, 3D printing is not my jam, but they have had good success with fully 3D printed ships. Now, as far as shipping stuff in booster packs, shipping is certainly a concern for myself as I have a few people that order ships from me. The laser cut pieces all fit in a small bag such as a 2x3" zip top bag and then a bubble mailer. If I 3D printed a hull, more than likely I would have to switch to shipping the ships in boxes instead of bubble mailers, which costs more in shipping materials and weight (shipping cost). I enjoyed the challenge of bending wood, it was a fun experience for me to figure out, but is too fiddly and time consuming for much of a mass-production. In most cases, a simple 3D printed ship is cheaper and simpler than a wooden one, and that's fine. Thank you for your thoughts!

    • @meepleswoodworking
      @meepleswoodworking 6 месяцев назад

    Dilute acrylics with water before applying it. Water evaporates and the acrylics bond like a glue to the rough groove. Miniature acrylics you used do not have primer (to create a rougher surface to bond with), nor varnish (to seal off the paint from rain), as this is a technical paint we use to mix colors and do gradients. Rubbing alcohol makes acrylics smudgy and cloudy and shouldnt be used with acrylics. Put some drops of medium gloss in it or varnish afterwards. It will seal it incredibly well. Everything else you said is very helpful!

    Once in a great while you can find SE box ships unpunched, but they're only from factory sets AFAIK. Rarely sold individually though, and always better to assume punched as you said. Nice video!

      Thank you! I think factory sets are so rare at this point, I'd rather someone assume it is unpunched and then be pleasantly surprised. I store 95% of my stuff recarded or unpunched since it can take up a lot of space to store everything punched.

    Lots of interesting factors at play. I think I'd invest the remaining ~16 points of the counter fleet into gold running, since you'd likely still have to counter a decent gold score from the UPS fleet before their final ships potentially suicide to trigger the end of the game. Some kind of HI Raider might come in handy.

  • @a7xfanben
    @a7xfanben Год назад

    Kudos for tacking such a huge topic. There's a lot that can be said about it, especially with all the variants and how the strategy interacts with counters. The key to the strategy is really the treasure-crew swapping ability. The Hai Peng is often the best ship to use it with, but darrin and the VASSAL Tournaments showed that it can work well on other ships, such as the Banshee's Cry, Coral and Zeus. The Hai Peng really should have a helmsman aboard, because the minimum island distance is 3L (more than L+L+S). With S+L+S+L speed, the HP will be able to reach consecutive islands if they're placed at the minimum of 3L apart. Since CJS gives Captain for HP to get +L, any sac captain should be swapped with Jimmy Legs to make (point cap) room for a helmsman. I have not done any intentional UPS counters yet, but I look forward to trying some eventually.

    • @meepleswoodworking
      @meepleswoodworking Год назад

      I wish I had Jimmy Legs to be able to do that. The original UPS I based this on didn't have the helmsman, but that's a good point. Really just wanted to show how this one works since its so complicated. And so I can beat it into the ground next video!

    Can you put more crew value on a ship than ship value?

    • @meepleswoodworking
      @meepleswoodworking Год назад

      Typically, no. But there are several crew such as Captain Charles Richard from Savage Shores and Jonah from Crimson Coast that let you "ignore" the ship's point limit but always take up cargo space and have a chance when you get hit of being flung to a nearby island.

  • @a7xfanben

    Nice combos. I never really consider the "crew of other nationality" chains like you do. Might have to experiment with that a bit more sometime. One problem this fleet might run into is actually still being outranged. 4L range is great, but if you don't get the second action from the Warlord, a ship like Deliverance with Sac can come in at S+L+S x2 and mess things up (especially with Capitaine Chevalle or a stinkpot specialist/etc).

    • @meepleswoodworking

      Reminds me at some point I need to do a vid on "effective" range. Pretty sure there's a counter to every strategy, especially if someone pulls Mermaids or UPS out.

      @@meepleswoodworking True, though I suppose it's a good thing or else there could be a broken or unbeatable fleet strategy. Even UPS might falter against a mach speed Hidden Coved San Cristobal (plus Odin's Revenge and other negative UT's might help), and FotG can deal with mermaids.

      @@meepleswoodworking Yup. Dragon still has to hit 3/4 times to sink it which is no guarantee. But it's likely a good counter. The question from there is if the ~19 remaining points are enough to beat the rest of UPS in the time remaining.

    Excellent video! Love the comparisons and detailed analysis, very helpful. For overall materials it seems like styrene, PLA and acrylic are the main winners. My biggest problem with the lightweight woods are they are too fragile and will not hold up for sustained play usage. The thick wooden ones seem like the "gucci" versions of ships haha, like a luxury product.

      I hadn't noticed that specific errata before. At 3 points, that's a tough sell. The LE versions are only one-offs, so I probably wouldn't use those either but I suppose you could stack those in too? Re: Graph, thank you! I might use some similar stuff in the future.

    • @a7xfanben
