I have been a passionate railway enthusiast since childhood.
My memories extend from the final days of steam in the late 1960’s through the decades to today’s modern diesel traction.
The videos uploaded to this channel will feature a wide variety of rolling stock (locomotives, freight, passenger cars & coaches, and self-propelled single or multiple units).
My interest in railways also extends beyond the trains themselves to railway stations and railway infrastructure. I enjoy researching railway history along with the architecture the railways built from bridges & viaducts, to signal boxes and level crossings.
The majority of my videos come from areas around Cumbria, Northumberland, and Southern Scotland. However, in my retirement years I plan to extend into other areas of the UK railway network including Devon & Cornwall where my passion for railways began.

Excellent video. In 1978 my family moved up to live in Armathwaite. My father worked as a controller at Carlisle station. I spent many days at Armathwaite station taking numbers. I saw the notice to close the station still on the door in 1978! Passenger services still operated back then. From memory, class 40/45/46/47/25 and dmu. I visited again in 2016 actually getting off the train and walking down station road into the village at Armathwaite.
The Buffet Room is not the actual Buffett Room. When the room was opened as part of the refurbishment it was completely stripped out with nothing of the original Buffet in place. So how did a Buffet Room that we see now appear? During filming it was found that the lights for filming set fire to the room's ceiling, hence the move to the sound studios in Denham. So the Carnforth Buffet was photographed and the pictures were used to build the set on the sound stage, this also was photographed. It is this second set of studio photographs that were used to reconstruct the Buffet Room that we see and used today. So when sat in the Buffet Room you are actually sitting in a reconstruction of a reconstruction.
Time for the Skipton side Bay Platform to be reopened, this would open the Ribble Valley and allow Lancashire and East Lancashire Stations to be connected to the Settle Carlisle and Skipton for Leeds
Wtf was a 397 doing on platform 3
Hi Jake, yes I thought the same thing. The train was already in Platform 3 by the time I arrived at the station. I believe this service usually runs from Glasgow Central to Liverpool Lime Street but I think on this occasion it started from Oxenholme and was reversed into P3 before starting its journey. Not sure of the reason for this.
@@stephenbennettrailways ah thanks
Hi Stephen, really enjoyed the history of the Ribblehead Viaduct on this vid, have seen Tangmere Steam loco going over the Viaduct this year, thank you for sharing cheers nigel
@@nigelharness9032 Many thanks Nigel. The story behind the building and maintenance of the viaduct is just as remarkable as the structure itself. Glad you enjoyed the video. Best Wishes.
Thanks so much for this video. I really enjoyed it. On a visit to the UK a few years ago, a friend took me there. It's hard to realize the enormity of those arches until you're standing under them. My friend took a picture of me there, and I'm just a dot until you enlarge the picture.
Thank you Don. It is a magnificent structure and the story of the how it was built and maintained is truly remarkable given its location. Best Wishes.
The English stations are all Crystal Palace style, don't you think?
Hi, Yes I agree. There are a number of UK Railway Stations with beautifully designed glass canopies.
The picture of the Station Staff at 1:30: Do you have a date for it? My great grandfather Charles Downham was at Hellifield until 1917, before becoming signalman at Clitheroe, Eshton Terrace till he retired in the 1940s.
Hi, From the records I made during the recording of this video the photograph at 1.30 features Midland Railway staff at Hellifield Station in 1895 which was 15 years after the new station opened. I hope this helps.
Nice to see the historic footage of Snow Hill, which I used a number of times in the 1960s.
Thank you John. I used both Moor Street & Snow Hill Stations many times during my working life and was pleased to be able to return to the area now that I am retired to film them. Glad you enjoyed the video. Best Wishes.
It was a good day at Carlisle. That's me with the backpack at 1.50.
Thanks Julian. It was a brilliant afternoon. I have seen several steam locos at Carlisle but this one was really impressive. Best Wishes.
I'm the annoying guy in the blue jacket at ruclips.net/video/Y6OvVu6qCpA/видео.html blocking your shot !! Apologies.
No worries Cliff. I do like to have people in some of the shots as it really adds to the overall effect of the occasion and goes to show just how passionate we all are as railway enthusiasts. It was a great afternoon!. Best Wishes.
Had Galatea been shown in the video instead of only in the thumbnail it wouldn't have been 2023 this was made. Galatea by 2023 had been painted into BR green years earlier.
Hi David, I think this is the only time that I have selected a thumbnail image that was not included in one of my videos. The image was selected simply to reinforce the theme of ‘Brief Encounter’ which ran throughout the film. The video was recorded over one day at Carnforth Station (22nd June 2023).
Thank you for this great video! You really have an extraordinary skillfullness to present the trains and landscapes in a both informative and artistically / photographically appealing way! I really enjoyed watching it 😊 Btw, I remember a "call barrier" (Anrufschranke) here nearby in a forest when I was a child (I am from Germany). My father took me there on his bike and then we called the train staff who opened the barrier for us. Nostalgic memories!
Thank you for your very kind review and I am so pleased you enjoyed watching the video and that it brought back such nostalgic memories. Best Wishes, Stephen.
So serene.
Thank you - It’s a beautiful train evoking memories of rail travel from a bygone age.
The last time I rode down this line was a few years ago on 3 carriage 195s which had recently replaced the older trains.
Thanks Hamish. I think class 153’s, 156’s, and 175’s were used on this line prior to the introduction of the 195’s. The line has predominantly been used by DMU’s given the absence of any run round loops throughout the 10 mile section between Oxenholme and Windermere. Best Wishes.
If possible, whenever I visit the UK, I always enjoy a ride on (pilgrimage to) the S&C and Hellifield is a favourite of mine (as is its fireman’s breakfast!). Your video was much enjoyed, bringing back memories of a station I first encountered in 1966. Thanks for posting. 👍
Thank you and I am so pleased that the video brought back so many memories. Hellifield is one of those must visit stations for railway enthusiasts. Best Wishes.
I enjoyed your video Stephen, thank you. At times a truly unpleasant smell exudes from the poultry factory and pervades the station. I can assure you you don't want to be waiting for a train then. I was sad to see the demise of the Brief Encounter tea room in the station building.
Thank you Edward, glad you enjoyed watching the video. It has been a few years since last visiting the station. I do remember the tea room but I think the building was sold off and has been converted into holiday accommodation. I also noticed that car parking charges have been introduced as I remember it being free to park at the station last time. Best Wishes.
What a great shot at 10:53.
Thank you. As well as the trains themselves I always like to take a close look at every station that I visit. Even the smallest country stations have some really interesting architectural features which help to tell their story.
Thank you for interesting video!
Thank you. I am glad you enjoyed watching the video.
Great video, Thanks. I was there in 2022 doing research for a book I'm publishing which includes Hellifield Station.
Thank you. On the day of my visit there was a broken down train further along the S&C line which limited the number of trains passing through Hellifield. However, the station contains a wealth of railway memorabilia and history which more than made up for the lack of trains on the day. Best Wishes.
Great vid Stephen.👍👍
Many thanks David. I have also subscribed to your channel and look forward to seeing some of your videos. Best Wishes, Stephen
Nice video Stephen :)
Thanks Simon. We don’t get many steam trains coming along the G&SW line so that made this one even more special.
Cal sleeper is not stored and serviced at Carstairs. Its is stored and serviced at Polmadie depot near Glasgow Central. The Lowlander sleeper splits and joins at Carstairs, while the Highlander sleeper bypasses the station completely using the East to South curve.
Many thanks for clarifying that the Cal Sleeper is not stored and serviced at Carstairs. The point I intended to make in the video was that Carstairs is a marshalling point and the final boarding point (both sleeping car and overnight coach) in Scotland for the Lowland Caledonian Sleeper trains from Glasgow and Edinburgh to London Euston. Best Wishes, Stephen
Fantastic tiny film. My Dad was from Cumberland. Brought up with coal in Wales. Steam magic !!. Thanks playmates. Dave
Many thanks David. Glad you enjoyed the video and for sharing your memories. Best Wishes, Stephen
Excellent video. Thank you.
Thank you David. It was a challenging video to film because of the poor weather but I was really pleased with the final version. Best Wishes, Stephen
Complex track! 🙈
Trains converge from 3 different routes on the approach to Carlisle Station from the south (the West Coast Mainline, the Tyne Valley / Settle Carlisle lines, and the Cumbrian Coast Line).
The fact this city is dying out due to low fertility and aging popularion is sad, this station could be a very big Touristic site for Thomas fans, like Talyllyn railway is
Hi Ethan, yes I completely with you. I think that much more could be made by promoting the links between Barrow and Thomas Tank Engine for tourism purposes. Best Wishes, Stephen
You have a bit of a West Country accent
Yes Andy, I was born in Plymouth and moved away around 30 years ago but have never lost the accent. I am going back to Devon & Cornwall in a few months time to revisit some of the railways of my childhood - videos to follow!. Best Wishes, Stephen
Worth mentioning - at 7:41 you show a picture of the transporter in operation. This rarity allowed the incoming loco to be detached from its train and released by being moved across. It rallowed this operation where there was no space for a turntable. This example could handle locos up to the size of a GWR Hall Class and tender. These used to be occasional visitors on Summer Saturdays from the West Country, relieving the pressure on Snow Hill.
Thank you for the information Ron which is really helpful in the context of this part of the video. I thoroughly enjoyed returning to Moor Street from my home in Scotland to record this video having used the station on numerous occasions during my working life. Thanks again and Best Wishes, Stephen.
What a beautiful and informative video, thank you. You didn’t mention that the station buildings at Plockton are now available as a holiday let, “Off the Rails”, you can see the name board on the gable end. It’s a lovely place in a very beautiful location, My wife and I stayed there on holiday several times before her death not long after this video was made in December 2022. It’s quite novel eating your breakfast and watching the commuters waiting for the first train to Inverness. This video brings bittersweet memories. TonyS Yate, Bristol.
Thank you David. This was one of my favourite videos of all the videos I have made. The Kyle line is really special and unique. I did make a separate video featuring Plockton and Duirinish Stations in which I mentioned the accommodation at Plockton. It is on my You Tube channel. Best Wishes, Stephen.
What a nice station and great viaduct! Thank you for video!
Thank you. I am pleased you enjoyed the video. It was a lovely place to film and the weather was very good.
Thank you for a wonderful informative video.
Thank you David. I am so pleased you enjoyed the video. The weather was lovely for early March which really helped during filming in this beautiful location. Best Wishes.
My childhood was spent playing on the sidings, in the sheds etc in the 50s / 60s. Lived on midland terrace, My father was a train driver. I even climbed up in to the cab with him and the fireman. Oh! Happy days 😊
Thank you John, lovely memories. Best Wishes.
Thank you for very interesting video!
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it. Best Wishes.
Superbe video et bien expliqué
Thank you and I am glad you enjoyed the video. Best Wishes.
Yet again another good video.garsdale is my local railway station.me and my wife often go to Leeds.
Thank you Wally. I really enjoyed filming at Dent & Garsdale. They are both very special places and we are so lucky to have the Settle / Carlisle line on our doorstep. I am so pleased that you enjoy watching the videos. Best Wishes, Stephen.
Just watched your video and it was very good.me and my dad and his work mate did work on Ribblehead viaduct back in 1988..thanks Wally.
Thank you Wally and I am so pleased that you enjoyed the video. It must have been quite an experience for you to carry out work on the structure. I have travelled across the viaduct by train many times but you have to get up close and personal to really appreciate the way it was built along with the people who built it. Best Wishes, Stephen
My mum has some pictures of us working on Ribblehead Viaduct.I was only 15 when I was working with them.
Brilliant video I'd use the sheds into a steam and diesel heretage centre giving short rides Lay areas picnic area etc so mu potential unbelievable
Thank you Anthony, glad you enjoyed the video. The station offers so much for railway enthusiasts and I do like your suggestion about the potential for using the existing engine sheds as a heritage centre for steam & diesel loco’s. Best Wishes.
I appreciate how informative this is! Due to my life time interest in Thomas & Friends and The Railway Series, Barrow in-Furness stands out to me, and I have been looking at videos of the station to gain more information. (If I'm being honest, I have put together a train simulator route of the location, and have attached a version of it to a route I've made of The Island of Sodor, and am putting together timetables for services between Sodor and the UK.) Your description of the trains is very helpful! 🙂
I’m glad you enjoyed the video and found it useful for your research. I recorded the video over 18 months ago and hope to film another later this year when I will focus more extensively on the connection with Thomas & Friends and the fictional island of Sodor. Best Wishes.
I liked the old photos/history of station buildings that have since been removed. Usually these buildings were much better than the modern day mettle bus shelters.
Thanks Robert. I am so pleased you enjoyed the video particularly when looking back at how the stations operated in years gone by. Best Wishes.
Whoever designed the West Midlands livery deserves a medal. Its beautiful and is my favourite.
Thank you. When I lived in that area the franchise was held by London Midland so it was good to return during the summer and see WM Railways operating on these routes. The livery does look very smart, particularly the newer Class 196 DMU’s which I featured in my video from Leamington Spa. Best Wishes.
hi there, i see the water tower has gone which was in the film, the cafe doesn't look like the one Celia Johnson was in,they could have rebuilt it as per the film and offering tea and pastries or buns and same style cups etc.Jocye Carey would be horrified now, Trevor Howard would probably sail away in the Bounty.
Hi Peter, there have certainly been many changes at Carnforth Station over the years since the time of Brief Encounter. I think most of the interior shots in the film were made at the studios back in Buckinghamshire. The heritage museum at the station is excellent and contains extensive information about the film and actors along with a railway archive from the days of steam. I really enjoyed watching the film in the little 12 seater cinema at the heritage centre. This was a unique experience and I remember seeing it featured on one of Michael Potillo’s Great British Railway Journey programmes. Best Wishes
0:15 The last time I used Settle station (about 1978) there was no footbridge, and crossing the line was via sleepers between the tracks. It's a grand bridge. It was a wonderful starting point for walks. Pals and I would aim for a 25 miler on a Saturday, with at least two pubs on the way. We had become so adept at planning that we could spend 5 minutes looking at a map, checking for pub symbols, and we were off. Until the fateful day that we planned a route that spanned two maps. We planned for three pubs (Malham, Grassington and Ilkley) and got walking. When enjoying a pint in Grassington we pulled out the map to detail the stage to the pub in Ilkley, and realised it was a different scale! After downing our drinks we trotted along the Wharfe and got to Ilkley for _last orders_ (in those days 22:30) and the last train to Leeds. It turned out to be about 35 miles.
The area around Settle is wonderful and I am so pleased that the video has evoked such memories for you. Best wishes.
Very interesting! Thank you for video!
Thank you. I really enjoyed making this video to showcase the G&SW line. My local station is at Gretna Green. Best Wishes.
Holidaying here next year and this line Askam to Ravenglass is on our list - thank you
Thank you. I have recorded videos at all of the stations between Ravenglass and Askam and hope you might find these useful prior to your visit next year. It is a most wonderful area of Cumbria. I am also putting together a video about the Railways of Ravenglass which I hope will be going up on the channel towards the end of the year. Best Wishes
A beautiful video, thank you.
Thank you Stephen. I am so pleased you enjoyed the video. Best Wishes
Not only fascinating video, but also an ASMR -like quality to them. I had to subscribe. Great work.

Thank you Johnathan. I am really pleased you enjoyed the video and thank you so much for the very kind review. It is much appreciated. Best Wishes
I used to live in Worcester and regularly used the railway stations. I do go back occasionally and enjoy the scenic river walks and the town centre.
Thank you Robert. I have always enjoyed my visits to Worcester with its quaint streets, lovely riverside walks, and magnificent Cathedral. Best Wishes
