  • ‘Birmingham Moor Street - The fall and rise of a classic city station’. After being restored to its former glory, Grade ll listed Moor Street Station has won the well-deserved accolade of the ‘Marylebone of the Midlands’. It is hard to image looking at this beautiful station today that just over 20 years ago it was just a dilapidated example of a former age in Birmingham. Nestled behind the city’s main shopping streets, this old world-style station sits comfortably against the backdrop of the iconic Selfridges’ Bullring store. In the video I will delve into Moor Streets chequered past which has seen it transformed from being the poor relation to neighbouring Snow Hill and New Street Stations to now becoming the city’s second busiest station. Just a short walk from Moor Street is Curzon Street which will be at the heart of the HS2 high-speed rail network in the West Midlands. I visited the site of the new station which is planned as the northern terminus of Phase 1 of the HS2 project which is planned for completion between 2026 and 2029. I hope you enjoy the video.

I absolutely loved Moor St when i went there several times in one year. It felt so different to all other stations.... The Iron works and orange boards made it look so amazing! I kind of got lost sometimes looking at it. Amazing place....

Yes, it is truly amazing station. I used the station on a number of occasions when commuting into Birmingham from Stratford Upon Avon during my working career and it was a real pleasure to be able to return and make this video. I am so pleased you enjoyed the video and thank you for leaving a review. Best Wishes.

Worth mentioning - at 7:41 you show a picture of the transporter in operation. This rarity allowed the incoming loco to be detached from its train and released by being moved across. It rallowed this operation where there was no space for a turntable. This example could handle locos up to the size of a GWR Hall Class and tender. These used to be occasional visitors on Summer Saturdays from the West Country, relieving the pressure on Snow Hill.

Thank you for the information Ron which is really helpful in the context of this part of the video. I thoroughly enjoyed returning to Moor Street from my home in Scotland to record this video having used the station on numerous occasions during my working life. Thanks again and Best Wishes, Stephen.

Hi Michael, I think you are probably referring to HS2. I decided to include a short piece about HS2 towards the end of the video given that the terminus at Curzon Street is just a couple of minutes walk from Moor Street and it will clearly have major impacts on the whole area in the future. The pros and cons of HS2 is certainly a subject which pulverises opinion!
