    This video comes from two locations which are only 15 miles apart but which have both been struck by tragic events. On December 21st 1988, Pan Am Flight 103 from London to New York exploded in mid-air over Lockerbie killing all 243 passengers and 16 crew members on board as well as 11 residents of the town. The plane was destroyed by a bomb that had been planted on board, which detonated in the cargo area when the plane was at an altitude of 31,000 feet. Meanwhile, the rail disaster at Quintinshill (near Gretna Green) was a multi-train rail crash which occurred on 22nd May 1915 resulting in the deaths of over 200 soldiers from the 7th Battalion Royal Scots who were on their way to Gallipoli. It remains the worst rail disaster in British history. The video features a variety of traction including Avanti Class 390 Pendoino’s; Trans Pennine Civity Class 397 EMU’s & Class 802 bi-mode EMU’s; LNER Azuma Hitachi Class 801 EMU’s; Colas Rail Class 56 diesel locomotives; DB Cargo Class 66 diesel locomotives; and Direct Rail Services Class 88 mixed traffic electro-diesel locomotives.
