    This is interesting purely because of how weirdly pissed off Conrad is about this. Of all the stuff that's happened in wrestling, Evil Sergeant Slaughter is the one that makes him snap at Bruce.

      Classic example of a person with a extremist view. No matter what Bruce says if it isn't what a person like that wants to hear they start insulting you instead of having a friendly debate on a topic. All because they are not willing to meet somebody halfway on the topic at hand.

      It’s almost like Bruce would make an exciting and provocative product that would be worth watching by comparison to the current day, extraordinarily vanilla WWE of today. But boy they sure do have great sensible taste and never offend!

    • @gregorsamsa2271
      @gregorsamsa2271 5 лет назад +1

      @@seanbarton4940 Wrestling was not always about being "provocative" or "edgy" - that's too superficial. Only during the Attitude Era. Wrestling used to be good because it was believable. That thing with Slaughter was done so great imo, because the heat he got was crazy! It's storyline wasn't as trash as many others in the WWE. But the way your framing it is wrong - as boring as WWE is nowadays, I don't miss all those trashy storylines that had absolutely nothing to do with wrestling (remember this shitty necrophilia thing with Kane? Perry Saturn and his mop? That racist angle between NOD and the Hart Foundation that was criticized by other wrestlers like Bret Hart and Dwayne Johnson??? That's not wrestling, not even enternaimtent but just pure trash, and even worse than Jerry Springer level).

    • @seanbarton4940
      @seanbarton4940 5 лет назад +6

      DATURA I mean, I guess I can understand why you would conflate what I said about a provocative product with the 3 or 4 most often cited “infamous” storylines of the attitude era, but that isn’t the point I was making. In the confines of the argument being made in the clip, Conrad says they should have scrapped an entire headline match at mania because it involved some nationalism and a country that we were soon to be at war with, which was poor taste because people died in real life at some point. I disagree with his take. While I do agree with what you say about believability, I don’t think it’s the main concern. Today’s product has gotten rid of damn near anything that could be taken to be offensive in the pursuit of chasing a family audience, the problem is that they also have gotten rid of anything that could illicit any real feelings in the viewership by doing so. I just don’t really care for today’s product, maybe. But hell, it’s just not for me anymore, I don’t think.

    What needs to be said is this: Sergeant Slaughter was propped up to be a bad guy. A BAD GUY. He wasn’t applauded for being an Iraqi sympathizer. He was illuminated as everything that was wrong with that side of the conflict. He was displayed as an evil man, and Hulk as the man who represented everything right about America, it’s freedoms, and what it stood for. So when Hulk defeated Slaughter, this was the WWF saying that good triumphs over evil, even in real life. You mimic the real world and then you teach kids that good defeats evil in that real life. That’s what they did.

    "It's a documentary." Wow, way to make up stuff. Slaughter, as an Iraqi sympathizer, was meant to be a huge "F-you" to Saddam Hussein and his dictatorship. "American Sniper" bastardized the real-life account of Chris Kyle, making him out to be a traumatized veteran. The real man openly bragged about killing people, said it was fun, lied about shooting Katrina looters, and wrote that he "couldn’t give a flying fuck about the Iraqis." That's different, right Conrad? Oh, but a professional wrestling angle is in bad taste. SMH.

  • @maestri09

    you can't retroactively judge something that was done a quarter century ago with notions of today. that doesn't work. it's not productive. At the time it wasn't known to the public what people in Iraq were going through, or what was really happening in operation "desert shield" (that strong anti-war social consciousness did not manifest in the public sphere until years after 9/11, when the "millenial" generation came of age sometime in the mid-2000s). As far as the public was concerned, Wrestlemania 7 was pro-wrestling's answer to "Rocky 4" and nothing more.

    My father was in the military and he knew what was on WWF because he'd check to see what I was watching. And he didn't care one bit about the Iraqi sympathizer angle. In fact, his only thought was that Slaughter looked goofy.

    Well let's forget the fact that sgt Slaughters life was threatened by anonymous ppl during that time he's even gone far as to say that restaurant owners wouldn't serve him food not only did people threaten his life and his families but also threatened to WWE for the poor taste that they exploited so is it important taste at first no it wasn't but later on during the angle it became very poor tasted so you can't really say that it wasn't in poor taste when after all that happened yeah it became very poor taste was it a good match between him and Hogan yeah it was a really good match but wasn't risky to do an angle like that absolutely it was.

    This was definitely a racist angle in poor taste. But Bruce has a point, if they can make movies about it, why can't wrestling?

    And the best was Slaughter's redemption.

    Things way more offensive than the Sgt. Slaughter heel turn would be the actual Iraq conflict, which much like the current one, was based in lies. Hulk Hogan called Yokozuna a "Jap", a completely racist term for Japanese people at WWIX, and while he was a face. Vince McMahon dropped the N bomb on tv because he thought it was cute. Mohammed Hassan angle as being an "actual terrorist", that was going to "behead" the Undertaker. All of those are way more offensive than WWVII.

    Honestly, I think Hogan vs Sheik Tugboat would have been as good as or better than Hogan/Slaughter. They could have put Hogan and Tugboat in the middle of the card and put Warrior/Savage at the end. Really though, I think Hogan vs. Rick Rude would have been a great feud for that show and so would Hogan/Warrior 2. Put Slaughter and Tugboat as a team against Jim Duggan and Nikolai Volkoff or something. Slaughter and Tugjob didn't belong in the main event of a WM.
