As a kid I thought this was awesome! People seem to forget who watches wrestling, especially in the mid 90’s.
I loved it.
I did too.thought it was great
Same. I thought this was an amazing angle.
I was hooked
It really was great.
No matter what anyone every says about this match it will always have a special place in my heart for me. This was the match I became a fan again after being a kid in the 80's. I watched SummerSlam '94 live because of of a "black box" and the parents were on a date night. The rest of the matches were cool and I enjoyed it. But when Undertaker vs. Undertaker happened I watched the entrances and went "Okay...that was COOL.." and started following again.
Kalentros I watched this with a black box too; some months (maybe years) later, my black box didn’t work anymore.
Well said 👏
I had summerslam on VHS and absolutely loved Undertaker vs Undertaker.
It gave us the purple glove attire and easily the best entrance he ever made outside of a wrestlemania with paul opening the urn
As a 10 year old kid at the time, i was super into this story. I loved it, and still have great memories of watching it play out from week to week.
This angle brings back fond memories for me. I totally bought all this stuff up. I was a little Hulkamaniac in the 80s, but as soon as I saw The Undertaker for the first time I was hooked!
I loved this as a kid. Judging the angle now, it helped build up the Undertaker and bring him back with some compelling drama, and it was perfectly done as a one-and-done blowoff where the Faker is put in his place and "destroyed" by the real Undertaker. There was no need to keep this going beyond one match in the first place.
Looking back this is still AWESOME. Taker Vs Taker. It was a moment and a spectacular
a lot of people forget that Brian Lee did come back to WWF after this match a couple of years later as Chainz in the DOA "motorcycle club" angle with Crush, and the Harris Twins as Skull and 8-Ball
I remember this being the talk of the playground back then. "Did you see his face?I don't think it's him."
"Nuh-uh...it's totally him!"
"No it's NOT!!!"
This was an awesome time to be a wrestling fan. All the buildup over the match at summerslam was awesome. Can’t get that these days.
It was larger than life.
Loved it. Just was one of the most fun and unique fueds and angles ever , just had to suspend your disbelief and have fun with it . I loved it, I'll never forget the feeling when it was a fake taker and when the real taker showed up, nothing like it ever since
Everything The Undertaker did back then was so special & unique. ⚱️
I honestly loved this as a kid who was a big Taker mark. lol I remember when Kane first debuted, at first I assumed it was UnderFaker under a mask :P
Bret and Owen in the cage kinda scooped the heat from this match. The hart boys had such a brilliant spectacle, Everyone was knackered after it and couldn’t get behind the taker vs taker match. Bit like how hogan/rock did to hhh/Jericho at wm18.
As a kid, the UT vs UT was awesome. i remember watcing it at the neighbor's house and we were yelling for the Hart vs Hart match to hurry up so we could get to UT vs UT. Looking back, obviously the Hart match was superior but for a kid, UT was the man period.
I was only 2 during 94. Started following wrestling in 97. When I got to the 5th grade my teacher told me that there were two Undertakers & they had a match I lost my mind & thought it was awesome. Yeah maybe to adults it sucked & k can see why but finding the tape as a kid was treasure.
Damn, Bruce's story about Leslie Nielsen and George Kennedy made me love Leslie Nielsen even more :)
Same here. I wonder if George ever knew about this.
This was awrsome as a young kid... I loved this concept.. Kind of like the double doink the clowns.
Yeah that’s one thing that people don’t take into consideration when they analyze this stuff. It was a fun storyline to me.
Summerslam 94 was my first self ordered wwf ppv, bret vs owen was one of greatest feuds and steel cage matches of all time
robert shelton yeah I agree. Still my favorite cage match
zeek would have killed for an early iron man between the 2, i think even an i quit or ladder match would have been good
zeek they should have a wrestler rehash the american badass gimmick with red hair and feud with undertaker
my first PPV was the first ever In Your House. Sid vs Diesel and the fact the WWF lowered the $50 ppv price to $30, is what convinced my dad to get it. good ole days.
I would have killed to see a Brett vs Owen ladder match. Brett was so good at putting matches together and Owen was just awesome. He could be a comedy or serious heel. They were freaking great.
This match shouldn't be the main event of Summerslam 94. Definitely should been Bret vs Owen.
Yeah that was stupid.
I know that I was fooled until I saw them wrestle each other. But to this day it is still one of my favorite feuds that the Undertaker had against another wrestler.
This match was awesome.
Why can't you say it was good? It brought the Undertaker back as it was supposed to.
When I saw this when I was much younger I wasn’t sure either. At one point I thought it was actually the undertaker… What a freaking mark.
As the match was about to start at SummerSlam 1994, Brother Love should've walked out on the mic and said "I've got the real Undertaker!" and it turns into a triple threat match.
I watched most the ppvs at my fave grandpas house
robert shelton me too
Soda Popinski ❤️
@Edgehead10075 Probably a jerk
robert shelton we got Lucky in UK. They did not charge for PPVs at all
Until about 2010 and even then it was only WrestleMania......then the Network came right after they started something every month
@Iain Glen mania used to be free too until channel 4 fucked everything up
“Fuck Dave Meltzer”
Goddamnit I love you, Bruce
Not really a surprise that his best experience with a celebrity was Leslie Nielson, everything I've ever heard about him was good.
I liked it… period. We still see videos and this discussed constantly
Undertaker vs Undertaker is my favorite Undertaker match of all time. Don't care what others say or think!
God almighty is was terrible...
I liked it as well. During this time, I never watched the Undertaker for spectacular Japanese 7 million star matches. No one did back then so I don't know why people are crapping on it today. I watched the Undertaker because I enjoyed the gimmick, the entrances and the presentation. The matches were the last thing on my mind. Did he have great matches? Sure but he wasn't known for that yet. Not until Bret Hart came into the picture in 1996 and we saw that he could actually go.
@@pikkon899 they also never booked him with anyone good I thought most of early taker's matches were awesome but he made it awesome with the few exceptions his talent is what made those matches
Undertaker came back at Summerslam. You only heard his voice after Paul Bearer was saved.
I was 11 in 94 and this was awesome.. Also I don't know who Meltzer was polling but there's no way taker/taker is a worse match then doublej/mabel.
17:20, I agree 100%
I loved this spin when they brought the evil twin
Can you imagine if Brian Lee would’ve came back as Kane
I was a kid and I could tell what they were doing. It was obvious that it wasn't him, but it was still pretty cool.
How hard is it to say “can you talk to us about the undertaker vs undertaker storyline and match?”
Imagine the two Undertakers as tag team partners.
This would have pioneered the 'cold tag'.
I love the fact Bruce thought Taker getting a tattoo would fuck his career up. Undertaker was the reason I started watching wrestling, right at the time of the UnderFaker gimmick, solely based on the fact he was sleeved like a badass
I thought Brian Lee did a respectable job portraying Mark's character. The match was less to be desired and i feel bad for Mark in that regard. But as Bruce stated and i knew this myself at the time. This was basically to bring back the "real Taker" with a refreshed look.
Mark Calloway was also about 3 inches taller than Brian Lee, so that pretty much gave it away
Why didn’t they have him wear boot lifts? Kane wore them to be taller than Taker later on
@@WCWThunderRosa probably already was
@16:14 The most “Widely Viewed” pro wrestling match EVER was Andre The Giant VS Hulk Hogan on Saturday Night’s Main Event in 1988. *Over 33 MILLION VIEWERS* watched it live! Can only imagine how many millions & millions have watched it since.
As far as I know, nobody else has ever come close to Hogan & Andre!
I knew that the Underfaker was Prime Time Bryan Lee
I loved this angle as a kid.
I liked the idea. The match was good. Brian did a good job as the imposter. I wish they had of kept him a little while for maybe a tag team later down the line.
knight matter of opinion
Loved this! I was fooled as a kid!
I knew right away that DiBiase's Taker wasn't the real McCoy, but that only fueled the fire of the story for me because I knew the heel was lying, lol.
Patrick's Crazy Place Should have just used real Taker till SummerSlam
I enjoyed the little bit about Lawler being a very talented artist. That sort of stuff is why I listen
Don't know if you know, but Lawler went to college on an art scholarship, and his art partially got his foot in the door of wrestling, he really is a very talented artist.
I don't remember the real Taker coming back before the match at SummerSlam?!
Me either!
They were house shows
never made it to TV......thankfully.
I don't recall this incident when both Undertakers went face to face following a match with Lex Luger on August 2nd superstars?? I can't find it on youtube either? did this actually happen? I am certain Undertaker returned for the first time at summerslam 1994?
Yea, the whole recount of that King's Court segment as well as the real Undertaker squashing Bigelow and the two Undertaker's having a staredown is all botched up. None of that ever happened, at least not on TV. Paul Bearer gets choked by the fake Undertaker and the lights flicker. When they come back on Paul is outside the ring, but the real Undertaker is NOT standing in the ring (unless he was for the in-house crowd and it was edited out for television). The TV audience never saw the real Undertaker until his entrance at Summerslam.
Patrick Breen yes it happened
They need to release a collection of Superstars on the Network
If this happened it didn't happen on TV.
I think it was great for its time... I wish the kane clone had a deeper story line... It was a perfect opportunity to even bring the Undertaker clone back
It was a good run. I was scared as a kid!
Lawler is a great artist.
it was cool and done as best as it could have been to bring Taker back.
Absolutely nobody cared that DiBiase was the one to introduce the battle.
Adrian D I did; I made the connection that million $ man originally introduced the Undertaker. I thought that was obvious.
This was cool. Yeah match wasn’t the greatest and not one to rewatch. But it was super cool and creative and memorable.
Idgaf what anyone say, Undertaker vs Undertaker was so awesome. I always remembered how cool that was. Man I was such a mark. It was great seriously. I didn’t care what the match was like tbh, the whole storyline was dope.
I liked the storyline and build up to the match...I started watching Wrestling in General in 1983...so by Time of Undertaker Vs Undertaker... I knew who Brian Lee was and when he debuted as Fake Undertaker the second he came out the camera man had a good shot of his face as the camera looked up and I knew it was Brian Lee even with his hair covering his face. I reconized him right away. The match itself was ok but the build up was better as well as the Leslie Nielsen segments
Undertaker vs. Undertaker was interesting in theory but execution wasn’t all that. That’s crowd was off as soon as the match started. Bret & Owen stole the show. Loved the Naked gun tie-in
never even saw the Kings Court where an Undertaker chokes out Bearer. had to go and look it up. Never saw Lex have the Taker in the rack either. Glad that they scrapped all of that. Because the Taker officially returning at SS was perfect. Had this all been shown, the match and the spectacle that was SS 94 would have lost total steam.
Lol yeah Bruce, if Bret/Owen had been 10-20 mins shorter and Taker/Taker 10-20 mins longer, it definitely would have been better! LMAO
I remember watching this and the cage match was good but it seemed like it went on forever. I think I saw somewhere that it went almost 40 minutes.
5 minutes less of the cage match wouldn't have hurt it at all and that 5 minutes extra could have helped the main event.
I can't find the Lex vs Fake Undertaker match they mentioned anywhere at 12:20. Anyone know where to find it. It's not on the network
never made TV. footage buried in the WWF/E archives. thankfully. although it would be an intriguing watch.
Imagine if Brian Lee was introduced as Kane (the undertaker) meaning that MDM has went out and booth the services of the Brother of the Original Undertaker, and then reveal that KANE was actually the original but Mark Undertaker (or whatever you choose to name him) had him locked up and took his gimmick
I knew Ted's was fake but then it scared the shit outta me because of the theatrics that made him evil, like the raising and re lowering the lights.
They should of done Taker vs Taker on some house shows after SUmmerslam. Lee did a good enough job to stick around for a while.
My biggest critique about Briam Lee's Undertaler was his height. They could have at least altered his boots to try to raise him up to the real Undertaker. Aside from that, Taker's return with the black lights and updated music worked. After getting used to the false Undertaker for months, the real Taker looked freaky as hell when he came back.
What I don't get is why wasn't Bret-Owen's cage match the main event? That wouldn't have compromised the Taker vs Taker match. Bret was the champion after all, and traditionally the championship match should be the final match of the PPV card after all
Jake the snake vs undertaker was a great childhood memory
Meltzer sounds exactly like the average fan now. It's scary how much he's shaped fan culture of today. So glad I didn't have to hear any of this shit when I was a kid.
S Marvin u and me both
S Marvin you dont have to hear it now either. You choose to.
This mystery still stands...how does the fake taker play into the big picture?...
I want to get a podcast with the undertaker
Yeah a 30+ min Brian Lee vs taker match would of been so much better than the greatest cage match of the 90s
One of the druids was jimmy del ray i think he played one of the druids before im pretty sure it was here
Leslie Nielsen is the absolute goat. ❤
Never stop burying Meltzer Bruce 😂
Binghamton New York represent! Haha.
Love that place random that they were there though.
Perhaps in an alternate universe, the WWE had Brian portray as Kane.
3:21 i laughed at that quick mcmahon replay "what do you mean"
Who gives a fuck if it was a quality wrestling match, it was the return of the Undertaker and it was pretty unique. I bought into the character even more so.
It would be remembered more fondly if it was the semi main event as it should have been rather than the main event.
Bret and Owen has been building since Survivor Series and it was for the title! It was a slap in the face of Owen and especially Bret that it wasn’t the main event. I don’t blame them one but for going over time.
Owen wasn’t anywhere near a top guy. He was never going to be ahead of taker on a card. He’d have to be working Hogan.
"Kwäääng"
They should of kept papa Shango around a little longer to face taker
I saw a wwe 19 achievement art that featured papa shango. Never looked into who it was or anything (xboxone video game thing)
but, that match happened. they even had taker/warrior vs shango/berzerker. world tour 91.
I'm starting to think Bruce doesn't like Uncle Dave.
XENA AND MEGAN
So according to Bruce, have he or Vince EVER had an idea that wasn't amazing? Cmon guy just because Meltzer says something doesn't mean it isn't true.
He just doesn't like Dave Metlzer because he critiques his show.
IMO top 5 SLstorylonrs OF ALL TIME
i whole heartedly admit prichard is as office as you can get in the business, but am i the only one who enjoys hearing prichard rag all over dave meltzer???
I can see going 5 minutes long, even 10. But 20 minutes long?! Thats 2 undercard matches
It was close , Taker was like a inch bigger then his evil copy Brian but they did look alike.
Why not just use real Taker leading up to the match? Why even use fake Taker before SummerSlam so all the fans can see it is a joke. At least if fake Taker not brought in till SummerSlam the angle and build up for the match would have been better.
John Easton It fooled a lot of kids at the time and that was the WWF's target audience back then.
The Undertaker was off work at the time.
Could you imagine if Taker went 20 minutes too long before Bret and Owen’s match? Bret would still be whining about it today in 2022.
I liked this match and angle, I thought that the fake Taker was convincing, in fact, I actually thought it was the original. What killed it was that Mark dwarfed Brian when they stood face to face.
Bruce, Saying that someone can't critique something just because they have not done or experienced it is weak bullshit.
By that way of thinking, nobody can have a legit opinion anything that they haven't done. So you can't bash movies, music, TV shows, sports entertainment, or anything that you are not experienced in doing.
His argument is very valid because Meltzer also dictates on how it should be done in the same context as if he himself has been a promoter. That's why Prichard and certain other bookers constantly bury him. To critique is one thing, but to flat out dictate that this guy or this angle should be here because it will draw money etc.. is a little weak on Meltzer's part. He's never promoted. What is he basing that on? There was an interview where Dusty Rhodes said the same thing about Meltzer.
Yea you can critique, and give your opinion but like Al snow says, a opinion is the lowest form of human knowledge. I agree with Bruce, don't act like your know what's best, and tell people how this and that should be done if you've NEVER done it.
Correct!
"Why can't the fans just be good little morons and buy our shit, none of this smartassed "critique" stuff!"
Bash “the dude” with a baseball bat, than I’ll burn your car outside a bowling alley and throw a ferret in your bath!!
As a kid, I even bought that Brain Lee was the real Undertaker.
in the 90s when you can t just google wrestling info if you want to confirm or at least have and idea about a topic combined with low resolution television. a lot of wrestling urban myths and conspiracies were common. whispered by older kids to each other and then to younger kids and their classmates and brothers and cousins. it was insane. one of those myths that we i believed was the lord of darkness undertaker was not the same western mortician taker and was a different pro wrestler. i also believed that kane was kevin nash wearing a mask.
What I'm taking from this is undertaker needed to slay a dragon
It’s odd to hear Bruce say he didn’t give a fuck of the match was any good. It’s very telling.
Bro please get your facts right lol. The undertaker FIRST appearance after royal rumble 94 was at summer slam. He never appeared to the fake undertaker at all before then. Just his voice was heard
If Meltzer wrote the sky is blue Prichard would automatically say it's green and what the fuck does Meltzer know about meteorology.
Bruce Prichard is very entertaining. The other guy his voice is like nails on a chalkboard.
