I grew up listening to JS Bach performed on modern instruments so I appreciate the NBS commitment to recording on period instruments! These pieces take on a new character in my mind. Obviously, performing instruments lets us, musician and audience, experience the music more faithfully to Bach's imagining of it. The overall sound is more frail - even anemic at times, but still more precious somehow. I'm no longer just listening, I'm traveling back in time too.
I grew up listening to Barthold Kuijken's interpretation while painting models ... Marten Root, you bring me a refreshing new light on this work ! Terrific sound also !
I think its quite normal for woodwind players to listen to specific musicians for learning purposes, and for that side Root is a huge inspiration no matter what he plays. That being said, the focus never gets away from the music, and thats what i love and also what is most refreshing to hear

Hi ! I'm not gonna let a thumb down but I really don't appreciate this version. And that's a masterpiece i enjoy so much. I don't feel anything or barely and I feel like the flute is a little higher than the harpsichord. That's disturbing my usual deep pleasure 😁
@@neilwalsh3977 The harpsichord part in this piece is actually completely written out, i.e. “obbligato harpsichord”, so it’s not a continuo part. But some bits do sound (and probably are, in the context of the piece) like realized continuo. It is superb writing for both instruments though, and played wonderfully here. It is really difficult to maintain a sense of lightness and flow throughout given how dense the writing for both instruments are, but this performance achieved that lightness and flow and it sounds effortless.

It’s hard keeping both of the wheels on the train track of the Presto movement. I heard the flute almost slip off but regained balance. That’s the nature of Bach, he makes it hard to juggle 2 huge bars of constant music flow together in the same beat with including additional challenges in between. And the whole train track is in itself twisty & curvy. You got to manage to keep everything together.

This s one f the pethtic use of H minor in Bach's works, as in th prelude and fugue in H, the violin/harpsichord sonata in H, the aria 'Erabrame dich' in the Holy Matthew Passionn, many sections of the H mass. Howeeer here, the pathetic is less marked. The instrumentation does not allow it, so Bac wrote a medium terme music in terms of pathetic expression. This is an absolute masterpiece in that tone.
Here are 2 professionals players which I enjoyed hearing them, separately. Both of them has a strong personality, each. However, in this particular sonata I suggest that both of them will chose another partner, in order to bring us the most of this musical work as a whole. It is a bit like a marriage or partnership: in order to succeed it should be like 51% and 49% and not 50%/50%. One of them has to give up a little bit. In any case, I thank both of them for their performance and NBS.
The place of the jacks (the things that pluck the strings) in the upper manual is different from the lower manual. That creates a different sound. There is also a special register, the lute register. It's a rail with fabric on it and it muffles the sound, creating a more lute-like sound.
@@luuktorn thank you for those details. Long a fan of harpsichord, I’d no idea about the construction or material choices and their impact, let alone the Lute register. Grateful for the knowledge you shared!

@@rasohatskiy_andriy. This sonata was written in B(h) minor, and there is also one copy of just one part in g minor. This is a different issue than the pitch of the instruments.
watching Marten Root playing is so strange. His posture is absolutely special and with only minimal lifting of his fingers he makes it look so easy. However, his interpretation is so austere that also listening is no pleasure for me. Menno deserves a much better harpsichord!
I agree. Players of modern flutes would also do well to avoid lifting their fingers too much. Nowadays one hears much slamming down of keys, and much “popping” on the “lifted” notes.
Oh dear, what went wrong? Actually right at the start they don‘t quite match up and then it just gets worse. As there are two people playing in two different spaces... different speeds, the flautist just trying to catch up. It just gets worse.... sorry, as there is such good stuff on this channel.
Sorry, but the flute sounds not good. I miss the emotions. Perhaps this kind of interpretation is not really worthy of a Bach, not in full enough, I think. The Cembalo sounds brilliant and this part is well played also. Nevertheless, thank you for your art and best regards from Leipzig, Germany.

it's a piece, not a song. Hence the name "sonata". If it was a song, it would be called a "cantata" and would be sung.
