  • In this video we take our In.Genius Mini outdoors and get it ready for growing plants.
    I show the growing medium I use, the quantity and characteristics. I also share unique experience and perspectives that can only come from 10 years of using these systems.
    I talk about fertilizer and show you guys the precise quantities and types I use. There's a section that shows you how to properly incorporate the plant food into the growing medium for maximum results.
    I share tips on properly filling your gutters and moistening them so they are ready to receive plants.
    I finish the video by planting one of the gutters with strawberry plants.
    Enjoy and dont forget to ask your questions in the comment section below!

    Great videos and information. I watched you many times and ready to get some strawberries going. I'm a little confused on the the soil less ratio. You had said 15 percent perlite. Peat moss and compost? then a 532 and 468 chicken manure fertilizer. I'm sure you have said it but I must have missed it.

      15% perlite 85% peat moss and then mix in some chicken manure pellets.
      I don't use compost because it takes too much volume for it's nutritional content and isn't ideal for container growing which gutter gardening is. The chicken manure is nice because its potent enough that the needed quantities don't change the properties of the growing medium.
      If that makes sense

      @@ThePlantCharmer ty for getting back. I watch your strawberry videos over and over. I thought that's what you were saying based on the pro mix you had mentioned. I was able to get a hold of some pro mix mp and hp. I thank you for getting back. just in time planting 50 plants today. they are june bearing an i plan on trimming the bare roots down to 3 4 inches like you said for the gutters.

    How do you apply and hook up drip tape?

    Hey Khaled, do you advise to trim the' roots on the strawberry bare roots plugs when you plant them in the gutters? If so, how much root do you leave untrimmed?

    • @ThePlantCharmer
      @ThePlantCharmer  3 года назад +2

      I’ve always trimmed mine and it never affected yield plus it made it a whole lot easier to plant my roots. I leave 3-4 inches on mine

      @@ThePlantCharmer You're right about easier to plant. I ended trimming the roots on half my plants. Left the other half in tact. I'll see how it affects yields (if at all).
      By the way... Have you had issues with your gutters getting too hot and raising the grow medium temp too high? I have some concern that even with proper watering, the increase in number of hot days will end up burning the roots. Ever experienced anything similar? I'm in a somewhat similar zone as you (8b), though on the opposite coast.

      @@eeeeep7360 as long as your gutters are white and your plants provide a good cover you will be fine. If you touch the gutters when it's warm you'll notice they don't get hot which means they absorb and this transfer very little heat to the medium.

    Can you explain the irrigation all season? Drip tubing? Also what type of mulch (if any) do you suggest?

    • @ThePlantCharmer
      @ThePlantCharmer  3 года назад

      I’ve yet to install auto irrigation on this setup but both drip tubing and drip tape would work, drip tubing will be a bit more expensive but that really the only difference. I have most of the needed parts here gotta pick up a few more pieces and I’ll shoot that video

    very informative vid. , thnx!! what is the fertilizer mix?

    • @ThePlantCharmer
      @ThePlantCharmer  3 года назад +1

      My pleasure! I’m using a 5-5-5 organic fertilizer in pellet form. It’s made of chicken manure, bone meal and feather meal. I’ll be using a liquid fertilizer also that’s coming soon in another video!

      @@ThePlantCharmer i am new to all this. i have done meal, blood meal, green sand, epsom salt, lime and chicken manure. can i mix this together, if so what percent? thanks very much my friend, I appreciate that u must b very short on time. So please respond to me when it's convenient. It's ineffable how much u r educating me. I trust I'll b watching copious amounts of yr vids. Jose

      @@joseramos-ky6oz thank you for your good words my friend! Don’t use lime when using chicken manure as chicken manure is a liming agent itself. Other then that yes you can mix all of these together but for a beginner I would recommend you get an already mixed formula that is geared to berries or roses (similar requirements). Those will have a higher first and third number and a lower middle number (npk ratio). Strawberries use a lot of nitrogen and even more potassium but very little phosphorus. As for quantities, the rule of thumb is mix a little bit in and each time you add fertilizer add a bit more then the previous time until you notice signs of stress on the plants (tip burn, plants growth stops or slows etc) then back off that quantity a little. That’s how you determine how much fertilizer a plant is able to take

      @@ThePlantCharmer I would love to see how you're doing the fertigation. One of the problems I'm having with surface application of 5-5-3 I'm using w/ the peat moss mix is that the peat mix forms a "crust" very quickly. This leads to the fertilizer only really sitting on top and not down into the roots easily. I think dissolving the fertilizer into liquid form will aid with this. Time for a new trial...

    Promix BX or HP?

    • @ThePlantCharmer
      @ThePlantCharmer  2 года назад +1

      HP has more drainage and holds less water so needs to be watered more often. I use BX to keep thing simple but HP would definitely perform better if you can keep it watered.
