  • After retiring the old strawberry towers, I decided to try 2 new ways of growing strawberries... hydroponically in a "Strawberry Skyscraper" and in space saving rain gutters.

Great pointers for raingutter planting. I got a replacement job throw away piece, which is metal, 7 or 8" deep. You have valid concerns with overheating and freezing. I'm in Northern California, we dont freezing, but get cold enough and way hot. Great idea of separating water zone for them. I have one unused!
Good work young man, stay interested, learn all you can from your dad, it will come useful when you're older!
Best wishes for your health concern, I don't know what it is, but stay positive! I was graced with beating stage 3 pancreatic cancer. Hugs!

Still keeping you in my prayers (now if I only knew your name). Glad you're getting other opinions. I just have to say that Noah's serious expressions of agreement while you're describing the materials was PRICELESS. He didn't ham it up --he just did what they do on TV. Well done, Noah!! The strawberries in the rain gutter got me all excited until I remembered that summers in Ojai can reach 110 degrees...maybe no metal rain gutters here. LOL. Good to see you again!

At 7:20sec you said at this point you don’t want the plant focusing on fruit so you’ll pinch off the flowers. That will make it focus on leaf and root development. When do I pinch off the flowers? In the spring of the first year?

Using plastic or metal rain gutters is the absolute way to grow strawberries. Strawberry towers appear unique and worthy - but if you ever do strawberry gutters - you will never use towers or do flatlander strawberry gardening ever again. No excess dirt and fixed garden land use. Minimal fertilization and irrigation, with maximum mulching. Easy mobility of gutters by putting into the sun and move into shade in extreme heat weather days. Able to put the gutters atop and along a terraced flat-surfaced stone/concrete wall (raised beds), lay out on a patio or decking (or their fencing rails), put into a gazebo, or put along a roadside. One can even use the inside portion of a stone/concrete stairway (or the patio/decking wooden stairs) - and put the gutter against the back of the steps. One can even make an espalier scaffolding and have an entire vertically-shelved gutter wall of strawberries (and green screen shade) - for as many as 8 inches apart in height for up to ~6 feet (9 vertical rows). Having modern gutter lengths of 8, 10, up to 16 foot lengths, with plants in the gutter 8 inches apart has 9, 15, and 24 plants in each gutter for up to 9 vertical rows - with 84, 120, and 216 plants. Thattsa lotta strawberries to eat ! No real downsides to gutters - unless they are left outside in the Winter - when in reality, they can easilby be brought inside and put into a warm southern-facing room (up against the northern wall with full sunlight) and the plants can over-winter - until Spring, when they are taken back outside.

Nice to see your Gardening enthusiasm pass on to a younger generation :-)
I have a Tower Garden as well, it was actually how I started getting into Gardening some 6 years ago. It was fun using it outside but after I started building big soil based gardening infrastructure in the backyard, I moved it to be used strictly inside with grow lights. Anyway, wanted to comment on the nutrient solutions used in the reservoir. I've opted only to ever use the Tower Tonic solutions A and B that are sold from the TG manufacturer, cuz they just work really well. You could also use any such chemical based fertilizers for hydroponics use and I'm sure it'd achieve same results. But organic solutions, I was warned by a few people that it's not a great idea for this system, because not only will you not be able to really measure out as accurately a consistent/correct amount of macro and micro nutrients, the organic matter is also likely to rot away in the contained reservoir, potentially creating undesirable odours but worst, potentially create a biome that could bring on disease to some plants. So while I can't confirm that as true, will be cool if you report your results at the end or midway through the growing season!
    Press on !

Thinking of doing this, and thinking of using white rocks in the bottom (from garden) with some mesh, then potting mixon top, so through the rocks it drains (and putting on 1-2 degrees down angle) here in Melbourne, AU. - probably have three layers that are 1m long to keep it compact also.

Hi Brian! We're in Northern Virginia. We've purchased numerous bare root strawberries. We have them in our garage under grow lights and on heat mats. We even added a fan after watching one of your videos. They start off doing so well then a couple weeks later, the leaves start wilting and dying off. We've checked the PH. We've fed them. We're not overwatering (we don't completely drench them and do allow them to dry.) Our garage does not get below 50 degrees. What in the world are we doing wrong??

I wonder if instead of in the future using a second gutter with soil in it underneath, My brain goes to how helpful it might be to do that but with either water or pebbles and water to give the roots a moist place to move on to. And they could also be fed diluted fertilizer into that reservoir, sort of adding a few perks of a hydroponic system as well

What a great idea to use a rain gutter for strawberries! I have a very small garden and the strawberries are along a fence so they don't get very much sunlight. Raising them up in a rain gutter would solve that problem excellently. Do you think covering the gutter on the ground with straw would be enough protection in the winter? I live in New York City.

It is very interesting to grow strawberries in a hydroponic tower, the strawberry plants grow faster than if they were in the ground. The only problem is that the body becomes too long, and ends up with the weight of the strawberries, to make the plant fall from its net pot.
