The DM&IR 227 2-8-8-4 Yellowstone steam engine on display in Duluth, Minnesota. This is one of the most powerful reciprocating steam locomotives in the world. The drive wheels are mounted off the ground, and come to life with the aid of electric motors attached to the axles.

I recently found on Ebay a model kit of a Yellowstone locomotive in 1/87 or HO scale. It says it's a Big Boy on the carton!! I had to have it when I read the livery is Duluth, Missabe And Iron Range!! I'm going to mark mine as 229 as the one parked in Two Harbors!

I'm thinking that it's one of those situations where, yes it would be awesome to see it running... on those few times it would be pulling an excursion... otherwise you get to see it close up get in the cab have a seat any day of the week nearly year round, and have a coffee in comfort while your there. there's definitely a place for museums with well displayed locomotives. love the enclosed cab, looks like being in an old garage

A beautiful and unique locomotive. Thank you. It was great to see the wheels turning. And thank you for panning slowly enough that we have the time to see what's there.

With UP Big Boy 4014's restoration a success, maybe DM&IR 227 would be restored to operating condition soon, and DM&IR 227, UP 4014,and C&O 1309 will be the operating articulateds! What do you think?

She's in great shape, better than 4014 most definitely, but CN definitely won't let that happen, and she's way too big and expensive for the NSSR to handle.

Assuming your ultimate goal is to have the machine run fan trips, yes, it would take a lot unless; you've got a sponsor with millions of dollars, an army of dedicated workers, shops with appropriate machinery, a railroad willing to give up the track time plus the dispatching services and fuel/water facilities so the engine can be tested (if it was the Missabe and not CN that could have happened), the cost of fuel and water, legal services and insurance, a rescue locomotive with crew, a fan base to support the costs of operation, ongoing housing and maintenance costs and on and on and on. A DM&IR monster Yellowstone wouldn't garner enough of any of that so don't hold your breath. However, I think the biggest obstacle to getting any of that is that the Missabe was, more or less, a local phenomena. If you asked a hundred people in Wyoming or Virginia if they knew of a Missabe Yellowstone you'd get a big, "huh?" The fame and catchy-name just aren't there to make it happen even though an M-3 out-pulled a big boy by a couple of tons and was second only to a C&O Allegheny in boiler horsepower to keep up the speed. Then, of course, there's the, "they" factor. Lots of fans think, "they" should get one running. Fans don't understand that the, "they" is them, the fans. Interest, dollars and work. Not enough of those to put an M-3 on the CN and that's unfortunate.

Raymond Leggs All she really needs are new flues, tubes, and to replace the stoker auger that was cut during her move to the museum... the only thing stopping her from running is the insane operating costs and being 'landlocked' due to her immense size and low speed.
