    Interviews like this prove the critics who say Lower Decks is made by people who don't know Star Trek to be blatantly false. It's not going to be everybody's cup of tea, but that doesn't mean that the team behind the show don't know or, inexplicably, hate Star Trek.
    Great job as usual, Trekyards. Big thanks to Mike McMahan for taking the time to participate.

      With the way CBS executives are now it's best to have the show in animated. live action shows have way more studio interference. Guys Like Mike can have more creative freedom because TV executives traditionally don't really care about animation enough like regular tv.

      I was wondering that too. The more i see the care in this show, the more faith i get.
      It would make sense that they would need massive power output for certain establishing projects. It would also mean they could maximize more systems in combat if required. Thanks for the comment Natani.

    I really appreciate his comment about artistic versus precision when drawing the ship and when trying to guess the size of the ship based on external elements.
    It’s similar to when tv shows try to guess either the precise elevations or floor number an item is on based on knowing precisely the other variable.
    They immediately assume the precise height of each floor and ignore variables like oversized lobbies and whether or not the building has a 13th floor or in much larger buildings if it has an oversized industrial floor as you go up it.

Mike, thanks for giving us a really fun look at different parts of the Federation that we would never see if it were live action. As always, please continue making it so 🖖🏼

  • @PsychoStreak

    Really nice to get confirmation on this stuff.
    Only thing that I didn't buy was the gap in the pylon, as it doesn't actually save on hull plating vs just covering the empty space.
    However, the shielded turbolift would make sense here; power conduits and most mechanicals reside in on portion while the lift is in other part heavily shielded.
    The ship size is interesting. He may have given a hint by saying that it's his crappy version of the Reliant. So her saucer may be between the Enterprise B & C rather than C & D, which would also shorten her length. She's not significantly longer than Voyager it would seem.
    So the pod does have the warp core and is definitely bigger than some initially thought, and the core is oversized relative to the size of the ship. Might even be the size of a Galaxy or Nebula class warp core. Lots of re-rendering about to happen.
    She's a big old pickup truck with a motor that puts out a buttload of power but won't win any drag races. But she'll run all day with all the accessories powered on no problem.

    • @MoonjumperReviews
      @MoonjumperReviews 4 года назад +1

      @power543 - That means I was actually wrong when I reviewed the trailer. My assumption being that the Cerritos was essentially a Galaxy kitbash, my very minor concern was that the Cerritos looked TOO impressive, too formidable to be the “least important ship in the fleet.” I said that it needed to be tiniest crappiest ship they could find-something that an Oberth crew would laugh at-to really drive home the point. But now that its small size has been verified, I am very pleased to stand corrected. I still think it should look a little crappier, but at least now, it makes more sense.

    Despite my faith in this guy, I was still surprised I had to rewind to fully grasp one of his explanations since I wasn't at the highest volume and he spoke fast (the warp core explanation). To be able to pull such a relatively detailed, sensible scenario (compared to these days of Trek) out of nowhere caught me off guard. Such a joy to listen to him.
    Only criticism / doubt is the pylon / strut explanation. Yeah, that's the normal logical explanation for why such things exist; not necessarily why the California class out of all ships needs it. It's a small ship after all; there would hardly be any material savings compared to larger ships. Why don't they have them? The cut out makes it seem there are two struts internally; a forward and a rear one, in each pylon, so do other ships not have two? Why is this one seemingly heftier?

    • @sivalon1
      @sivalon1 4 года назад

      This Can Be Pronounced to control vibration and stresses. Having no material in one place forces loads and stresses to travel along paths where material does exist. Look at an I-beam girder: take three 2X4s, stack them one on top of another with their ends put on two cinder blocks. When you stand on them, they’ll bow under your weight. Now, take those planks and glue and nail them into an I-beam shape. Put it back onto the cinder blocks, and it’ll support your weight perfectly well, and probably mine too.

    • @ThisCanBePronounced
      @ThisCanBePronounced 4 года назад

      Exactly. It's like not watching The Mandalorian because of what they did to the Star Wars movies. We NEED to watch these kind of shows, to show the meatheads in Hollywood that we want good stories, not lectures on political correctness.

      @@khyronkravshera7774 Mind giving me an example? Identity politics (at least in the context I ment, there is probably a better term to use) is a different thing to tackling social problems. There is nothing wrong in doing so, if it is done in a good way. I don't care what race or gender the character is (Mariner, Sisko, Jameway, Uhura, etc.), as long as he or she uses and is shown using his or her knowledge and skills to overcome obstacles and achieve goals. What I despise is being told that the character is just the best, not being shown anything to support that claim and have him or her (let's be honest, her) just glide through the story while having everything given to her and not having to overcome any obstacle on the way (Burnham, Rey, etc.) That's what I ment by Identity politics. I haven't seen that in Lower Decks yet, maybe we were watching different shows.

    One of the things about Star Trek nacelles was that you couldn't be near them during warp. The warp field kills living beings. The nacelles were always placed away from living or working areas.
    So, you have to take a turbo lift through the nacelles during warp? That will kill you.
    I was thinking that they would just use the transporter to get to the engineering pod. Problem solved.

    • @generalgrievous696

      They must have addressed that safety concern in Starfleet sometime after the Tos era. The oberth class ship from the TMP era has the same setup of the secondary hull being connected by the pylons to the saucer and the turbolift would have to pass Through the nacelles on that ship to get to and from the saucer to the engineering section

    I've always assumed that turbo lift shafts at least in the TNG era were laid out like Pneumatic tubes that can bend and curve and the cabin itself has its own gravity plating and inertial dampers. The episode 'Contagion' when La Forge was being thrown around the cabin I think the dampeners were failing and causing Geordi to be toused around the cabin and the lift itself was functioning normally.

    I had noticed the way it looks like the red section of the nacelles had been swapped out at some point to a more compact shape. If you follow the lines they may have originally been more Enterprise B shaped and they were swapped out for a more primitive Enterprise C style.

    Hey i have a question, im currently building the cerritos but im a bit stumped on the placement of engineering. i found the side blueprints of the ship and based on that and what engineering looks like in the s how im thinking its located in the saucer section under the bridge. do you know if this is true or not? im hesitant because i feel like engineering should probably be located in the lower hull

    This is a ship that I saw, and liked. Then looked at it more, and have come to hate. That's usually the other way for me where ships grow on me. It's because of the light of course.
    The round nacelles kinda fit into a pre-tng, post TOS movie era. The windows just perplex me, and I can't tell what are windows and what are just stupid excessive glowy bits that look like windows.
    It's a shame because I really did like it. It's just that the more I see it, the more it looks like some very basic fan design of bits from all eras. And I like simple, but this just not look well thought out.
    Oh well. Maybe it'll grow on me again.

    Wouldn't it be incredibly dangerous to have a Turbo Lift that close to the antimatter stream in the nacelle?
    Not only would anything that touches the stream be instantly disintegrated, but the amount of radiation it gives off wouldnt be too good for anyone's health, hence why Federation ships typically have nacelles far away from the Primary and Secondary hull.

    • @generalgrievous696
      @generalgrievous696 2 года назад

      They clearly found a way to shield the turbolifts. The much older oberth class ship has the same set-up

    • @stryletz
      @stryletz 2 года назад

      @@generalgrievous696 actually, according to the math people have done based on the Oberth's size the pylons are too small to house a Turbolift system.
      The commonly accepted theory is that the two sections of the Oberh are connected via transporter.

    • @generalgrievous696
      @generalgrievous696 2 года назад

      @@stryletz well that's only if you're going to go by the smallest possible size for this ship. The oberth class has gone through the magic sizing change dilemma like the defiant class in all it's appearances. There are several possible sizes proposed being 120 m 150 m 220 m and 300 m. The ship has also been shown conflicting in Canon from having two decks on the saucer to having over four decks on the saucer. the ship in Canon is depicted as having 13 decks with deck 13 being the engineering if it was the 120 m version of the ship that would be impossible especially having a Canon crew complement of 80.
      The other dilemma that we run intuitive fan argument that a turbo left going past or through the warped cells would be deadly automatically ignores the fact that the old birth a ship designed in the motion picture era when Gene Roddenberry was still steering many things creatively is that the ship design which first appeared in the search for Spock would not even have been possible according to the original rules that Gene Roddenberry laid out that the nacelles could not be near or attached to the saucer module because of the warp field that it would put off so some things by then had already been adapted in universe to even have that design in the first place.
      Now according to the 13 deck layout of the ship that's Canon there's no possible way for the majority of those decks to fit into the saucer section going with the 120 m variant you would have to go with the 150 m to 220 m variant proposed to even have a possibility of all that space otherwise the decks would be too small for people to inhabit.
      The last point is that the idea of having site to site transporters as a widely accepted fan theory is an interesting theory that I think is cool, but next to impossible given the technology of the era. During the TOS and motion picture era site to site transports were described as very dangerous and potentially deadly since transporters weren't as accurate back then. we didn't start seeing regular site to site transports until late next generation early Voyager DS9 era when technology had advanced to the point where it was safe enough otherwise it was mentioned before many times that the risk was too great of materializing inside of a bulkhead or wall
      One of the episodes of trek yards covering this very class of ship mentioned that possible workarounds exist, but that you would have to have a much larger size oberth even to make the decks work in which case the larger design could fit a small turbo lift that would go from the primary to the secondary Hull or have Jefferies tubes and ladders that go to and from there if you went with the smallest 120m size but Again you have the impossible to ignore elephant in the room that you can't reconcile the decks if you went with the absolute smallest length And height.
