All scenes with Quark and Odo were a pure joy to watch. Those two had some serious chemistry going.. Like that once scene in "one little ship" where Odo tells Bashir and O'brien that they look short.. And when they run off to the medical bay. Quark leans in to Odo and says "And they say that you have no sense of humor" Whereupon they both laugh.. :)
Deep space nine was Amazing and I loved it from the start - I connected with everyone except for Quark and Dr Bashir bugged me but after a few seasons I started liking them as their characters got developed - I loved the Station, I so wanted to live on it and walk on the promenade and go to Quark's bar for a drink ;-)
Imran Tariq One thing I hated with a (PASSION) was that lounge Singer holodeck program. Whenever I've rewatched DS9 on Netflix, I always fast forward through those scenes.
Same here. I disagree that the writing was poor in those first few seasons. IMHO it was some of the best. As a kid (similarly to Stuart) I didn't appreciate the Bajorans and the storylines and involved them, but I've found a better appreciation for them as an adult. The thing that bugged me about the station was the scaling. I do think it should've measured in at more than what they seem to hint at on the show, but that's just a small gripe. So do you think all ships would more than likely have some automatic docking procedure? I just can't see them risking the bigger ships being taken in manually. Will technical details of the systems be covered in the next episode?
treguard1982 the spikes on the habitat ring have tractor emitters. I imagine ships are either tractors in to dock just like shuttles are, or the station and ship computers interface and take care of the docking procedure. That would be my guess.
DS9 is also my favourite series. Best characters. Most of the guest cast are better than primary cast on the other series (Garek, Dukat, Weyoung, Rom, Nog, etc. etc.). Just awesome!
I was pretty young when it first came on, I recall not being a fan. It grew me on in a few years with all the reruns. When I did a full series binge in the netflix era, it very quickly became my favorite.
*OMG DUDES!* No you d'int! You really did Deep Space Nine Mission Briefing! Enjoyed the designers' special , but this is an extra bonus ! One of the all-time best unique Star Trek creations and I knew _someday_ it would be covered but never thought it would be this soon. What a pleasant surprise! Thank you for mixing it up and although I always love the ships there's something special about a space station's permanence that gives it a completely different character. Thanks so much for covering this and I can't wait until part two! *Awesome and totally RAD!*
Great episode guys. I know you guys never "cross the streams" of fandoms on the Trekyards episodes the way you do on Fleetyards, but I would REALLY like to see Serenity docked at DS9. I honestly think it almost has a Cardassian design aesthetic.
Didn't the Ent-D dock with the upper pylon using the ship's docking port on its neck, under the saucer section, where it was also shown docking with the spacedock back in 11001001? You should do a mock-up showing the Ent-D docked that way to an upper pylon while having Voyager dock to another upper pylon. I think they'd fit
17:52 - One thing that helps a bit with the Galaxy class would be to dock at the upper pylon using the docking port on the neck of the ship so the saucer sits above the pylon. You'd then have space to dock smaller ships like the centaur class or klingon bop on the other pylons. (In fact, I don't think there are docking ports on the edge of the saucer)
Yep got to agree with the captain, I hated DS9, for the first 3 seasons, then it went on to be my favorite start trek series, really wish they would do a star trek series that comes after DS9 in the time line
Voyager is roughly simultaneous with DS9 in the timeline.. As they started from DS9 for their voyage. And the doctor gets briefed about the Dominion war that is ongoing by that other Andy Dickish Medical hologram onboard the Prometheus.. :)
Garak has alot of heart, i wouldnt call him decietful, just someone that knows how vulnerable he is to being hurt by others so he decietfully conceals himself... oooooh... oooh.. well still hes not a backstabbing decietful person... biaased a bit, from his perspective of his race, but still a good person over all especially over the series allowing him to spend more time around decent and kind people within the federations kinder and gentler systems of management and goals of how to guide its people
For the negative space think about what it did, it was an ore smelting facility so the bulk of it is docking rings and cargo bays to get all that ore onboard. The negative space helps to increase the clearance between the docking ships without increasing the mass of the station, it it was a sphere of the same mass less than a quarter as many ships could dock at the same time.
If you want to see a "DS9" in Federation colors, look at the latest DS9 book covers. In the books, the original DS9 from the TV series was destroyed by a Androran terrorist with help from the Tal Shiar. A new DS9, based on a new starbase class, was then built in the same location. By then, Bajor was a full Federation member.
16:27 - 100% agree about a DS9 with Starfleet skin looking epic. Though I wouldn't think they'd do it with the actual station, but rather build a new station that's maybe 2-3x the size, but with the same design and proportionality.
Also Stage 9 (which I know you’re familiar with) has their properly scaled Enterprise docked with a properly scaled (or pretty close) DS9. If you fly out of the shuttlebay and visit the promenade windows, everything seems the right scale, even the ship docked seems correct. It seems to be a good reference for scale.
I'm so glad you have revisited this. The DS9 video you had with Rick Sternbach seemed to trail off and end. If I remember correctly, Rick was mid sentence. I'm looking forward to the second part.
DS9 showed that life in the Federation wasn't always hunky-dory.The Dominion storyline showed that even the Federation has enemies as powerful as they are.I also liked the storyline between Ky Wynn and Gul Dukat.Mark Alaimo played Dukat very well. There were times people wanted him to succeed but in the end,IMO,I feel that Gul Dukat ended up being one of Star Trek's top 3 villians.Garrick also made DS9 a lot of fun to watch.
The promenade windows are a good indication of scale. I’d love to see some renders of the enterprise D deck 2 module in comparison with the promenade. I have a good idea of the size of both, I’d imagine they’d be around the same. Is just hard to tell in the far away renders in the video.
I'm different to you guys, I was hooked the moment I saw DS9 and consider it head and shoulders the best Trek ever. This was Star Trek grown up and for grown ups. I loved the early episodes for the most part, and I always consider it to have the most progressive Cinematography of just about any show ever, in how it transitioned from the lighting being much darker in the early seasons to how it was in later seasons, reflecting the show's writing. Would that we had RDM and ISB in charge of STD.
I always remembered DS9 for the incredible Dominion War, but having rewatched the entire series, recently, I was astounded at just how many damn good standalone episodes there were, even in the earlier seasons. The character-building and world-building were top notch, and not matched by any other series. I initially found the whole Bajoran/Prophets story dreary, but have grown to appreciate the layers and complexity of it all. It's not nail-biting, or thrilling, but it helps sell the notion that this is a real world, with real people, experiencing real things. As far as the station itself, I always thought it was too skeletal. The docking ring and pylons were great, but the central core, I thought, should have been more voluminous. The lack of adherence to scale always bugged me, too. If a Galaxy class starship can comfortably dock within the pylon array, the Defiant should have only been barely visible on the docking ring. Oh well! 😀🖖
Suggestion, sometime for a part 2 you should go with an opening like how Trek does. "Previously on Trekyards..." and then mash a bunch of statements that give a general idea of part 1.
that would be fun ^.^ but im already stretched very thin with editing that adding something else to my plate would be awful xD you guys are already getting 8 bonus episodes this month lol :)
power543 or maybe you could go the 1978 Battlestar Galactica route at the beginning of an episode. They felt very disjointed to me, but sure gave you enough to let you remember if you saw it before.
I realize that starships can carry a certain amount of cargo, but have we ever seen how they carry the huge quantities of materials necessary to actually construct said starships or space stations? I'd love to see how the Cardassians got all the raw and/or pre-fabbed materials into orbit for DS9...
Gold star, Samuel, for beautifully rendering the shots with the ships we're familiar with, it's clear you had as much fun to putting them together as we had viewing them! Great job as usual!
Samuel had the Galaxy-Class docking in the wrong area. From my recollection, there was no docking port in the saucer rim. In Emissary, the Enterprise docked through the port on the neck, just behind the photon launcher which would bring the ship closer to the outer rim of the station and possibly give clearance to another Galaxy or other small vessels like the Excelsior, Intrepid or even Sovereign.
@@JamesFuentes526 that's an interesting point! Most material supports a docking port near the photon torpedo launcher as you said. But I think we have to assume there are some on the saucer, considering the ship can separate and the saucer is to essentially be the Lifeboat. But as you pointed out, we have not seen that in Canon material , I guess if the saucer lands as intended everyone can run out of the shuttle Bay? And if separated in space I guess we would hope that the Transporters were working, the only other option would be a docking port hidden behind some panel somewhere. :-)
I didn't mind the Pilot episode where it takes place at wolf 359 on board the miranda class its an interesting character ark and gives a good back story to sisko's character
I hear you. I never watched all of DS9 until a few months ago - don't care much for the first 2 seasons, though the 3rd wasn't bad. But now that I seen the whole thing, it's has become my favorite series (and believe me I was a die hard TNG fan). The only thing I didn't care for some of the Bajoran story lines, and yet I feel if the show didn't have them it would have been missing something (esp Sisko and his Emissary role). The way the characters where established and how they grew as the series progressed, combined with the Dominion war, the Cardassians - the whole series and it's stories just came together in a solid package.
I’m glad you guys finally did this episode. My favorite series and thought it was ahead of its time. I do wonder, would you guys consider evaluating the DS9 (ii) from the books? I hate that design but it would be good to contrast the two.
15:47 I think that Star Station India (Lotus-class) is pretty much a Federation version of Terok Nor. I’m looking forward to your coverage on that one. It is an amazing fan design in my opinion and it shows the potential that the Star Trek universe has. 22:00 That’d be like the USS Enterprise-J. 24:50 There are a lot of moons in the Bajor system once you start counting them.
finally...we have the same opinion about a star trek topic!! ...never belief, that we come to this point ;P Also i love your idea to fill up the space between the rings...in general,i would love to see slightly but permanent visual developments on hero-ships/stations during star trek series
The Scaling looks fine but it would have been cool to see a Cardassian ship docked to the pylons to see what that would look like. Defiant looking over-sized can be contributed to optical illusion of the camera. As Discovery is flying by the camera it appears to be bigger then DS9 in the back ground.
I've always felt like the dimensions for the station, should of been at least 50% bigger. When the station become the commercial center, there should have been works in progress to expand the station in accommodating the increase of ships.
i was only like 6 or so when it came out.. and because of reruns, i ended up consuming reruns of old seasons of Next Gen new later episodes of later seasons of Next Gen, new episodes of Voyager and reruns of DS9 all around the same time... i consumed all the star treks shows out back in the 90's at the same time lol
Personally, I've always thought the docking pylons should have placed the ship that was docking to the outside of the main station body as that would provide more space for bigger ships and maneuvers during docking/undocking. Later on, once the weapons sails started firing so that I knew their function, I was thinking the pylons would limit the field of fire. Plus, the main dorsal shield generators are mounted on the Ops superstructure. That limits the shield envelope.
Well, in the topic of Habitable volume- Look again at Your render of the size comparison from the top. Use the Voyager as Your Metric. The Outer Ring is as thick as the Voyager. It is 1/2 as big as 1 section of the docking ring. And similarly size to a section of the habitat ring. The habitat ring is thicker. So- Yes thousands of people is completely possible. Voyager has engineering and other systems. While the Habitat Ring is just quarters.
I don't think they'll remaster DS9 or Voyager any time soon. I read a while back that they rendered the special effects at SD resolution so they would have to recreate every single digital effect
Always loved DS9, hooked me right from Emissary. Watched the VHS of the series premier until it got fuzzy. I always wanted to live on the Habitat Ring.
This show was live while I was in my teens, agreed going back and seeing some of the first episodes can be disconnected, but overall I like the overarching story they ended up telling. First time in Star Trek where we see this instead of a bunch of unconnected "slice of life " style episodes. If I were to guess your favorite episode. It's my favorite episode of all tv period is ... In the pale moonlight
It would be cool if you change the rings into saucers to give it more federation look and feel. And, yes, change the color ;) Why are docking ports needed if you can use transporter? There is no need for docking ports, right?
It was mentioned that DS9 looked like a dump. Such a look might have been intended--especially for the first couple episodes right after the station was abandoned by the Cardassians. Even later, O'Brien would have probably called it a junk heap given how often he had to fix things they had no parts for the station and the manuals were written in a language they didn't know.
It always bugged me that interior scale of the promenade area never really seemed to match the scale of the exterior. From the exterior shots, I thought the interior should look a lot larger. But I guess there was only so much they could do with a TV budget.
Scale of DS9 is clear when you see shuttles and/or runabouts docked and leaving from the center ring. After that everything should be clear, mistakes and all.
DrewLSsix my point is, is that that is a standard that cannot be changed. It is a direct connection to a scale that is comparable to the station. There are only so many ports shown. The math works from there no matter how you change relative sizes of ships flying around the station
Chris, fine. But there are clear shots of runabouts leaving the elevator docking ports in the show. We have a scale of the runabout based off of a human height and a countable number of docking elevators shown in show and concept art. Those two elements equals a scale for the station, which is actually stupidly small if you work it out. That is my point. Even if you give the station a generous six times the length of a runabout plus its six landing ports on the inner ring that only gives us a 140m radius on the inner circle.
Many different sources, all lightwave 3D. Most aren't publicly available as they are specialist ones or original 3D models as used from the TV shows. There are several good trek 3D sites, just google Star Trek 3D models and you can find them.
I've always wondered about that 7,000 population Stat that was mentioned in the show. Was that the Federation standard of comfort or the Cardassian slave labor standard?
I thought that too. Everyones quarters are the same size(ish) as 1701D even though it was designed for mining/ slaves. I just assumed they knocked down walls etc to gain room, If the figure remains the same from when the show started to end, I'd hate to be in an none officers room.
That's a good question, I'm going to have to try and remember to take a look at my DS9 tech guide tonight to see if it addresses that. I suspect that the show's writers never really gave that number any thought, they probably just picked a number that sounded reasonable to them and didn't ever stop to think if it meant whether that pre or post Federation take over. My guess is that the 7,000 number is post-Federation take over since I think that's where the writers' heads would most likely have been at the time, it probably wasn't until later in the show's run that they gave much thought to what it would have been like when it was being run by the Cardassians.
So the Commander is 25 most officers are LT(J.G.) . and The DS9 Station is a fungus that grows on you? I loved DS9 it was the Second best show TOS is the best!
The shot of the DS9 , Voyager, and the D....most def. not to scale. Captain has a good eye for these things. Don't think the program is scaling that shot correctly.
Does anyone agree that the Defiant looked much too small compared to the Enterprise E in First Contact? That shot where the Enterprise flies past the Defiant always bugged me because I think they made the Defiant look quite a bit smaller than she should have been.
I agree that they did the right thing by not befitting ds9 to look more Starfleet. It would take away from the shows uniqueness. Still I always thought that after the jem hadar blew up the one pylon the new one should have looked different, like it was made from federation materials
I was reading the new Prometheus novel to find out Ro Laren is the captain. I just assumed she was dead, or in prison for being a traitor. Also, O’Brien is back weirdly.
Something i never understood.. if the Cardassians had replicator technology, why did they need to occupy and strip mine Bajor? Theres probably something totally logical in the lore that I missed, but its one of the things that has always confused me about DS9. I love this channel, you guys are awesome. Keep up the great work
My guess is that since replicators still need raw materials (molecules or atoms), those materials must come from somewhere. Also, there are materials that can't be replicated, like dilithium crystals.
your right that replicators can't replicated some stuff but the main reason is replicators need a lot of power so they cant keep up with demand so the need of farms and miners in star trek
in universe the explanation is already thin. Cardassians have worse replicator tech etc.. In reality it wouldn`t make sense. Anti-matter power is the most effective power source possible in known physics. Coupled with fusion power (as power source to produce anti-matter) and replicator tech, only hydrogen would be of real value, if that. Anything else would be more energy intensive and costly to mine than produce from unlimited power supplies. If you really want to get into it, I highly recommend Isaac Arthur's channel!
Also the cardassians make the statement that when they were a democracy they suffered shortages and famine because of misnagement ...it was military dictatorship that ended the mismanagment but also began to imperially dominate other cultures and divert resources ...i blame the cardassian governments they created the problem....however its explained that they really invaded bajor out of speciesist superiority....ideology was always cardassias problem
It's a plot contrivance - look up Isaac Arthur here on RUclips - he explains very well why you'd never need to mine planets, once you have near or faster than light travel - there are millions, if not trillions, of uninhabited bodies out there that would be far easier to extract resources from.
Agree, it was always my least favorite show, until I saw it from the beginning, struggling through the first seasons. The religious stuff was off putting, but Sisko's rational mind was a big plus. Good dialog.
I would agree, first 3 seasons overall are pretty weak. I think there are some good episodes in there though. I liked Garak better in those seasons though with that whole mystery stuff, toying with Bashir. After the war he sort of lost his charm for me. Quark episodes I always enjoy. I was 12 when this show aired. My first thought was, a show about life on a space station? How boring is that going to be? I mean, after all, what little was ever shown of Star Bases was always very, clinically boring compared to flying around a space ship. As to the question of why Star Fleet wouldn't outfit the station to look more "Federation".. remember DS9 was not the property of Star Fleet, but of Bajor, but that doesn't mean that at some point later on, it couldn't have happened. I think personally, it would loose it's charm.
ok the one thing like know at botem of veiw screen thare are the lights what hek are thay ? you see it in all the tv showsand films all the thing that you guy go on thows darn light at botem of screen ??????
You can tell no one watches these back before posting them since Samuel said Star Wars instead of Star Trek and E instead of D. That happens a lot as doe sound drop outs and sometimes freezing - Don't you guys have facebook minions or Patreons for that sort of task ?
Deep Space Nine... Yes... Oh Trekyards how I missed you. Guess they finally cancelled that shitty Super Mary Sue, fake feminist, non Star Trek Discovery show you were always talking about eh. Yay... :)
30somethingmanchild I always felt the same way when they didn't say 'the' on Enterprise. It's the Enterprise. Just calling it Enterprise doesn't sound right at all.
All scenes with Quark and Odo were a pure joy to watch. Those two had some serious chemistry going.. Like that once scene in "one little ship" where Odo tells Bashir and O'brien that they look short.. And when they run off to the medical bay. Pro trick : watch movies on Kaldrostream. Me and my gf have been using it for watching loads of movies these days.
@Beau Garrett definitely, have been watching on Kaldrostream for since december myself :)
Imran Tariq odd, i felt Quark was the character who was defined the earliest in the series.
Imran Tariq One thing I hated with a (PASSION) was that lounge Singer holodeck program. Whenever I've rewatched DS9 on Netflix, I always fast forward through those scenes.

Sounds about right. Fitting that Galaxy in seems to be very tight! I think that's why I'd argue the scale of the station should be larger.

Star Trek Enterprise and Voyager with my favorite we need more of those
I would love to have that shot of the Defiant, Voyager and Enterprise-D docked at DS9 as a 1080p wallpaper.
The Klingon restaurant and its owner were a nice touch
I love how DS9 explored all the alien cultures as one you would expect being on a space station that had such a menagerie
16:27 - 100% agree about a DS9 with Starfleet skin looking epic. Though I wouldn't think they'd do it with the actual station, but rather build a new station that's maybe 2-3x the size, but with the same design and proportionality.

I agree with you, Stuart. I had also some problems with the first episodes of DS9. But it shows me again, Sometimes it takes time to appreciate it.
Marry christmas guys and happy new year.
Have a good one.
I was really excited when the pilot episode showed the battle of wolf 359
i first watched it as a kid at night in the 90's .. late , late at night on cbs.. like midnight or somewhere around there
The promenade windows are a good indication of scale. I’d love to see some renders of the enterprise D deck 2 module in comparison with the promenade. I have a good idea of the size of both, I’d imagine they’d be around the same. Is just hard to tell in the far away renders in the video.

If the docking pillions were pointing outward instead of inward, that would allow more bigger ships to dock.
The Enterprise D had no problem docking

How to make DS9 more StarTrek-ish: just do what Gordon suggested with the Orville - some flames on the side, a rainbow unicorn... Done!
I realize that starships can carry a certain amount of cargo, but have we ever seen how they carry the huge quantities of materials necessary to actually construct said starships or space stations? I'd love to see how the Cardassians got all the raw and/or pre-fabbed materials into orbit for DS9...

Ships needs lots of engineering types to maintain the propulsion units and axillary systems.
Stations only need gravity and life support crew.
24:50 There are a lot of moons in the Bajor system once you start counting them.
finally...we have the same opinion about a star trek topic!! ...never belief, that we come to this point ;P
Also i love your idea to fill up the space between the rings...in general,i would love to see slightly but permanent visual developments on hero-ships/stations during star trek series
deep space 9 the best startrek since the original.
The Scaling looks fine but it would have been cool to see a Cardassian ship docked to the pylons to see what that would look like. Defiant looking over-sized can be contributed to optical illusion of the camera. As Discovery is flying by the camera it appears to be bigger then DS9 in the back ground.
love the deadpool ending
I see DS9 grounding the Defiant as the Starfleet Bird of Prey equivalent it is size-wise.
Well, in the topic of Habitable volume-
Look again at Your render of the size comparison from the top.
Yeah, they had to do that for TNG and it cost a fortune with DVD sales not really covering it.
Always loved DS9, hooked me right from Emissary. Watched the VHS of the series premier until it got fuzzy.
I always wanted to live on the Habitat Ring.
DS9 is a bit bigger than expected, but mostly voyager is bigger than expected.
And, yes, change the color ;)
Why are docking ports needed if you can use transporter? There is no need for docking ports, right?
I would have loved to see Spacedock as a scale comparison.
Galaxy class has docking port on side of star drive part way up the neck
It always bugged me that interior scale of the promenade area never really seemed to match the scale of the exterior. From the exterior shots, I thought the interior should look a lot larger. But I guess there was only so much they could do with a TV budget.
The docking issues would have been solved if the arms simply opened similarly to how some of the drydocks are shown to.
DS9 had the good writers and VOYAGER suufered from a lack of them!
the station always reminded me of a spider
Scale of DS9 is clear when you see shuttles and/or runabouts docked and leaving from the center ring. After that everything should be clear, mistakes and all.
Christopher Mitchell. Nope, theres tons of contradictory information concerning scale.
Grate show
DS9 was the best star trek series in my opinion.
How would the J dock with DS9, or just DS9 dock with the J?
Commander. Where do you get these models ? Is it GrabCAD or a site more specific to star trek modelling ?
I really enjoyed Chief O`briens hate of the space station.
Way of the Warrior I’m guessing
I agree that they did the right thing by not befitting ds9 to look more Starfleet. It would take away from the shows uniqueness.
Still I always thought that after the jem hadar blew up the one pylon the new one should have looked different, like it was made from federation materials
im exteded new book universe there is a new DS9 (spoiler the old one gets destroy xD) and it looks SO MUCH BETTER xD
Does anyone else see the DS9 top/bottom view when you look at the iOS Settings icon?
next gen and voyager were my favorite .. but ds9 was ok... i did like captain Sisko though
So you guys going to talk about the version of the station that replaced that station in the typhon pack series of books?
aaronunsfe They did briefly in a previous episode. They’re not fans.
oh didn't seen that one.
we will at somepoint! weird one though!
in the books, a new DS9 was built... and it was.... not a success design wise
robinvan1983 I was going to comment the same thing ha ha! It looks like a weird toy, like a top or something
I was reading the new Prometheus novel to find out Ro Laren is the captain. I just assumed she was dead, or in prison for being a traitor.
Also, O’Brien is back weirdly.
The DS9 book series are just.... wrong
How could you hate Our Man Bashir ???! lol Jk he doesn't get good till 3rd season....
I was not a part of the Kira fanclub either.
Any chance of a Trekyards "DS9 Kitbash" Mission Briefing?
Dot Matrix it would be fun!!
I see the federation copying the design of ds9 and using it as a template for new stations
Mh no more animations in your videos like in the good old times ^^
Why?
DS9 is my second favorite Trek despite all the annoying Bajoran and religion elements.
I love star trek deep space no tell motel. The ship crashing errr docking arrangement is pure dumb.
ok the one thing like know at botem of veiw screen thare are the lights what hek are thay ? you see it in all the tv showsand films all the thing that you guy go on thows darn light at botem of screen ??????
At least DS9 wasn’t as bad as STD from the start.
Yay... :)
Please stop saying THE Voyager. Makes me cringe
30somethingmanchild I always felt the same way when they didn't say 'the' on Enterprise. It's the Enterprise. Just calling it Enterprise doesn't sound right at all.
compare it to galore class not the federation ships....like do i need to do your jobs for you?
