This is one of the best Trekyards episodes, with all the speculating about far-future technology. Doug Drexler mentioned Enterprise-J as a 'city in flight'. In the novels "Cities in Flight" (1950-1962), James Blish created a future with cities themselves taking flight into space. New York being steered through space from a virtual bridge at the top floors of the Empire State Building, how beautiful is that? I would love to see that in a movie.
New York City as a city ship. That is an interesting concept, but in reading your comment, it made me think of another city ship, Atlantis, from Stargate: Atlantis. While not the size of New York, its not far off. Guess that is the true beauty of Science Fiction, the vessels we can create (like your NYC City Ship) or Doug's 1701-J and the adventures they make possible.

Atlantis is a city that can go into space, but is still limited in its capabilities compared to purpose-built ships. What if technology allows cities to close that gap? Ships could become outdated. That means there's a limitation to Star Trek. Far into the future, there may be no need for ships, and a Star Trek without its ships and without a hero ship is hard to sell.
I must say.. im so impressed with all the designers of these amazing ships. I've been going back and watching all the interview pieces from Probert, Drexler and Sternbach and just thrilled with the knowledge and levels of detail and creative thought processes. I love the Enterprise J and easily see the time period and Federation priorites during it. Doug Drexler is fantastic and really has a skill for imagining the future in genes vision. The J reminds me a lot of a General Systems Vehicle from the Culture books written by the late Iain M. Banks, both in scale and function. The D was also approaching that concept, but the J seems to realize it much more fully.
100%. The debate about an AI in charge of the ship made me think of the Culture right away. The size and complexity of the ship almost demands a super intelligent AI be in charge, at least in certain respects.
As an episode starter, the "J" wiping Earth from time would be the coolest 15 second long opening, apart from the Scorpion Part I opening and Armageddon (ENT) opening. I say here here for a sentient "J".

Being a city in space, I would not be surprised if it had its own Starfleet Academy on the ship so cadets would not have to go to Earth to attend. What do you think?
*it's RADically sleek!* Great job guys, love hearing you guys discuss the ships with the designers and showing off these original models which I think still hold up today even though I know that for high definition TV they may have wanted another pass for detail but I think it looks beautiful and could have easily been used as an establishing shot or a flyby in the episode considering the resolution of TVs at the time. I like the nod to Roddenberry's city ship concept. This is certainly it. Doug has put a lot of thought into this. I like the idea of a sentient ship, but if it's following orders, is it a member of Starfleet?
I can imagine the Enterprise J being akin to the liberator from 'Blakes 7' a self healing ship with a central intelligence 'Zen'. it does at points highlight ethical issues, Zen did have protection mechanisms built in and in one episode, so concerned and incensed that the barriers of programming were crossed (Ethical subroutines?), he shuts down. and the ship was left in the hands of the 7 crew. I find it interesting that a ship such as the Enterprise J, that is briefly conceptualized, brings so much fear if the ship is automated with it's own thought processes, I think a natural extension of what Voyager was operating. Nice robust and combative episode haha!
Doug is talking about Partner Ship not the ship who sang. And Partner ship was a STUNNING STORY. I highly recommend it...McCaffery is truly one of the greats.
I have a better appreciation for the J after watching these episodes. Although I'm partial to the Connie and refit connie styled era ships I like the line/inspiration drawn from the NX.
I appreciate the design and some of the thoughts behind it especially considering it was done for a quick blink and you miss it shot. And personally would have loved to have had been designed as even larger.
If the Enterprise J has replicators and transporters, it could always have automatic repair systems that would scan everything on the ship and in case of failure, the transporter would instantly transport new replicated components directly replacing the failed ones. No more warp core breaches if a gnat sneezes within a light-year of the engines. No losing weapons or internal communications.
I have one in Star Trek Online called the USS Clarkson. I thought it was the perfect name for it since it was big, powerful and fast but some people hate it. The auxiliary craft would of course be the USS May, which is slow and reliable and a shuttlecraft called the USS Hammond which fast but prone to crash and catch fire.
For the dedication plaque I was going to have, “ambitious but rubbish” but I thought that was a bit negative. I went for, “How hard can it be?” instead.
I still think Drexler is thinking about ships a thousand years later. This is only 200 years or so. I don’t think tech would be that radically more advanced.
Wonder how big the JJ version of this would be. IF the Enterprise there is nearly the size of a Galaxy class, then future ships would be even more massive.
In the movie "The Fifth Element" when they reconstruct the hero girl in the chamber from a finger is how things like star ships and other things would be built in the future, at least that is how I imagine it. That was an excellent Sci Fi movie for its time and is still a great to watch in comparison with new films today. The new Blade Runner movie did a great job keeping the old look from the original with a perfect blend of subtle CGI and not over doing it. As for the ENT J my first impression of the layout image was garbage, but now that you did those amazing renders I like the ship now.
I would suggest reading the Ian M Banks "Culture" series of books to have an idea about how a really advanced civilization with star trek style technology would approach space exploration, defence and civil engineering.I love the Enterprise J. The size is absolutely no problem and I would suggest that Starfleet has many ships as big as the J for the simple reason that the infrastructure to build them would be more developed.Just like the culture, the Federation would be building megastructures like Banks orbitals or even Dyson spheres by the era the "J" was commissioned, think about starbase Yorktown in star trek beyond (although set in an alternative universe the technology needed to build it would be 3 centuries in the past). Starfleet would also have had several centuries to explore the Dyson sphere discovered inside its territory to reverse engineer the necessary materials and techniques required.The Ship probably is fully sentient and would have an assigned rank to issue commands, It may even be the captain, utilising the talents of the crew to help it solve problems. The size of the ship suggests a fully functioning self sustaining community, that could survive indefinitely away from Federation space. I would rather have watched a series about this ship than "Discovery" just imagine the possibilities provided by exploring the whole local group of galaxies! (the Kelvans from the Andromeda galaxy could have been the new big bad guys with the Borg being reduced to a foe that is a near peer of the UFP like the Romulans were in TNG).
No disrespect but I don't know why one needs an organic, limited brain to be the ship. Recall the TNG episodes where holodeck characters that were basically sentient were created with only a fraction of the total computing power available on the D. So by the J, it should be no problem to have a sentient, machine-based intelligence (or at least a facsimile of one).
One thing which I would like to have the answer to is whether or not it was a conscious decision to make the USS Enterprise-J resemble the Xindi Reptillian warship and its spindly “nacelles”? 10:30 I was never a fan of the argument which was made to take apart Data and have crews of androids replace people because at that point you don’t have money anymore and people work in Starfleet because they enjoy that job. Automating that job out of existence would be boring. (Kind of the point which was made in “Our Million-Year Mission”.) 16:25 Doug, if you want to see some crazy technology look up “Mertens Orbital Research Station” or play the game “Star Trek: A Final Unity” it is featured in if you have the time. It’s like playing a TNG episode with all sorts of strange and wonderful things.
the idea is nice, but as doug said. it in a time where they are so advanced that we cant even think about. in order to do this, you got to surpass anything you know and do more.....but companys dont want this. they take something and say "make something like this, just better" no risks you know. but man i would love to see "Star Trek Universe" (improvised title of the show)(an yeees i am a biiiig star trek universe fan)
Doug Drexler did not scale the Enterprise J correctly when he made his Temp version and so if i was to make a properly scaled version none of her 50+ lights would go with it. This is why we see no animations with her and other ships :)
Can we get an episode for the Congo Class? I much prefer that to the the Enterprise inspired version with no secondary hull. That would be cool, not my favourites as there is just no detail in that saucer section, redone with some details that make sense and not just random lights everywhere it would look great.
If Data took control of the J it would be the same as the J being alive. A grown ship could heal its self like we do making repairing battle damage easier. If a built ship using replicator tech lost its ability to replicate for what ever reason the crew would be handicapped on being able to repair the ship if they could at all. Love Doug but still think he was drunk when he came up with this one and does not want to admit it. lol
Looks aside, I still like the version of this ship not chosen, but anyway I think it is very "Ape Brain" to think Star Fleet ships, if they were still calling themselves Star Fleet by this time, would always stick with the saucer design for 800 years. Seems like that design would get changed. But I think it is even more "Ape Brain" to think people would need to travel in Star Ships. We've seen long range transporter tech in Star Trek already. Seems to me, in 800 years of time, that people would be able to appear out of thin air anywhere they wanted to, like the Iconian's did. Travel by physical form is the ape brain part. Humans would probably evolve to be Q or beyond Q, the way it was worded in TNG, the Q were afraid of what humanity would become.
The older guy is just reading from his pre-written questions which seem less and less relevant to the interview and the younger guy just seems annoyed that a designer isn't 100% concerned with the technical aspects of a ship he had very little time to design that only ended up on a wall.
Why is it so huge? What's the purpose behind such a large vessel? Did an engineer from the Empire somehow cross dimensions and get hired on by the Federation to design their new ships? It makes no sense for Starfleet to construct such a ship.
It does make sense, Size comes with the Job. If the Job Description says go explore another Galaxy, the Ship needs to be this Big. Maybe the Ship stays in the Unknown for a Decade or two. than you need to take a Starfleet Academy with you. And Kids to grow up to be Cadets. And not all Kids will be Cadets in Starfleet.
If this ship travels to the Andromeda Galaxy, that is 34 times further than than the distance Voyager traveled. Even at slipstream it takes nearly a year to travel there, it's not like in TNG and DS9 where they can take a few days off and go to earth, they are suck there for the whole mission with no backup.
If they're traveling between galaxies, I would think they'd build the ship that large to accommodate the vast number of people who would want to participate in something like that. Also they're very possibly dropping off colonists along the way.
The Enterprise J is 2.11 miles in length. I myself don't think she has a bridge either, I think she does has a CIC. I think she has 5 decks on top and 15 decks on the bottom, which houses the support starships. The middle is a open hollow area, where lakes, parks, houses, apartment, offices, stores and shops are.
Theyre asking all these technical techobabble questions....Doug doesnt lthe answer...he only designed what was needed for a show. Its a business and a TV show! geeeeez.
I just can't stand this ship design. The connection points for the nacelle struts just look like no effort was made to provide a connection point. Not just that they're spindly, but it honestly looks like the strut just clips through the nacelle casing. It looks like a graphical glitch when you get up close.
Why does this guy even bother to agree to do the show? Seems to enjoy skirting around questions or preferring not to get too specific. Then the Trekyards guys push him to be specific to which he get agitated- why bother?? Make up your own canon about this ship- seems just as useful.
I've criticized Samuel and Stuart on this a number of times. Even Doug had told them some of these ships didn't get all this elaborate back story, that wasn't their job. The Truth is the design really doesn't warrant an hour long discussion. At most you talk about the choices, how the CGI was created, how long it took and perhaps the process.

It just seems a shame that guests are invited that don't seem to care about following the passion/structure of the show- we're here to discuss the SHIPS. If you don't wanna play, why bother wracking these people's brains for something they've moved on from/don't care about.
But he keeps coming BACK...it's *so* clear that there is an unspoken understanding here, in the first part Sam almost winks at him while pushing (and smiling) about a particular obscure thing. THEY ALL ARE IN ON THE JOKE, while also covering the design. And everyone is laughing, and Sam actually got Doug to theorise some very interesting ideas...they KNOW him, and how to interview him, he's not agitated, he likes the challenge and Sam's probing questions brings out the best of Doug's creative mind. Fun convo amongst friends. Everyone wins, except for people who can't determine the fun, tongue in cheek humour.
I'm not much of a sugar coater, Bladerunner. I think there IS an unspoken understanding. Doug knows the show's format by now and it's focus is for the sake of the fans. It doesn't mean he isn't annoyed. I don't think it's a serious annoyance. It think it was a serious annoyance when he was first on the show. And if you doubt that, he's not the only one that has been annoyed by details of a story they didn't write. Tim Russ looked like he was going deliver a vulcan death grip on Sam after his question about USS Voyager. Doug is getting popular on this show. He's said it in this video. These artist are getting MUCH deserved attention like they never had before. They are no longer 'unsung' heroes'. Sam and Stuart have brought their work to the forefront to the benefit of both fans and these professional and amateur artist. Tim Russ probably wanted to help promote Renegades and Trekyards was an easy 25,000 viewers. It's a no brainier. While these guys have clout already in Star Trek, Trek Yards it's a POWERFUL plat form and connects all sorts of people together. I see huge possibilities for the channel. I hope they improve their quality and not just increase their quantity of shows. I'm still kinda waiting for the polished feel other shows have on You Tube, such as Spacedock, The Film Theorist, Vintage Space and Vsauce. I criticism them because I love them. I want to see them excel.
wsi trek I mean, what about leisure? I think Doug mentioned this in the previous Enterprise-J installment of Trekyards, bringing up the example of Picard's buggy from Nemesis. While they don't /need/ to use that primitive of technology, sometimes you still wanna do it for fun.

Steven Baumann i prefer more batttlecruiser like ships I'm not a fan of the nx, tos enterprise or the j. But the kelvin timeline (jj Abrams) ships are cool.

You know what I appreciate? The fact that you just said you don't like it, rather than make up a bunch of technical-sounding reasons you don't like it that don't really make logical sense. It's okay to just not like things!
It's hard to break down the numbers simply. -Lets say this is like connecting half an Aircraft Carrier to a mass equal to 27 aircraft carriers with just a 15 foot I-Beam in between. -Engineering Load Stresses depend on the thickness of the material compared to the two counter weights it connects. *In other words: If you're on a see-saw and the person on the other end is too fat the see-saw will break under load.* New materials like carbon nano tubes will add considerable strength 2-3 times more than normal. You would need a structure a million times more strong for the J Class Enterprise. So lets say you had a magic field that could take up the slack. Well what point is there in using matter if Energy can bearing that much of the load. *It doesn't make sense.*

If you want to think more about sentient AI ships, you should read the Culture series by Iain Banks.
Technically it’s not the first in the canon since there is the sail ship, the shuttle and ECV vessel.

Doug Drexler did not scale the Enterprise J correctly when he made his Temp version and so if i was to make a properly scaled version none of her 50+ lights would go with it. This is why we see no animations with her and other ships :)

It's a stable design for flight. It requires super materials but not impossible.
If Data took control of the J it would be the same as the J being alive. A grown ship could heal its self like we do making repairing battle damage easier. If a built ship using replicator tech lost its ability to replicate for what ever reason the crew would be handicapped on being able to repair the ship if they could at all. Love Doug but still think he was drunk when he came up with this one and does not want to admit it. lol

Looks aside, I still like the version of this ship not chosen, but anyway I think it is very "Ape Brain" to think Star Fleet ships, if they were still calling themselves Star Fleet by this time, would always stick with the saucer design for 800 years. Seems like that design would get changed. But I think it is even more "Ape Brain" to think people would need to travel in Star Ships. We've seen long range transporter tech in Star Trek already. Seems to me, in 800 years of time, that people would be able to appear out of thin air anywhere they wanted to, like the Iconian's did. Travel by physical form is the ape brain part. Humans would probably evolve to be Q or beyond Q, the way it was worded in TNG, the Q were afraid of what humanity would become.

The older guy is just reading from his pre-written questions which seem less and less relevant to the interview and the younger guy just seems annoyed that a designer isn't 100% concerned with the technical aspects of a ship he had very little time to design that only ended up on a wall.
Why is it so huge? What's the purpose behind such a large vessel? Did an engineer from the Empire somehow cross dimensions and get hired on by the Federation to design their new ships? It makes no sense for Starfleet to construct such a ship.

It does make sense, Size comes with the Job. If the Job Description says go explore another Galaxy, the Ship needs to be this Big. Maybe the Ship stays in the Unknown for a Decade or two. than you need to take a Starfleet Academy with you. And Kids to grow up to be Cadets. And not all Kids will be Cadets in Starfleet.
If this ship travels to the Andromeda Galaxy, that is 34 times further than than the distance Voyager traveled. Even at slipstream it takes nearly a year to travel there, it's not like in TNG and DS9 where they can take a few days off and go to earth, they are suck there for the whole mission with no backup.
If they're traveling between galaxies, I would think they'd build the ship that large to accommodate the vast number of people who would want to participate in something like that. Also they're very possibly dropping off colonists along the way.
The Enterprise J is 2.11 miles in length. I myself don't think she has a bridge either, I think she does has a CIC. I think she has 5 decks on top and 15 decks on the bottom, which houses the support starships. The middle is a open hollow area, where lakes, parks, houses, apartment, offices, stores and shops are.

I just can't stand this ship design. The connection points for the nacelle struts just look like no effort was made to provide a connection point. Not just that they're spindly, but it honestly looks like the strut just clips through the nacelle casing. It looks like a graphical glitch when you get up close.
Why does this guy even bother to agree to do the show? Seems to enjoy skirting around questions or preferring not to get too specific.
Then the Trekyards guys push him to be specific to which he get agitated- why bother??

I've criticized Samuel and Stuart on this a number of times. Even Doug had told them some of these ships didn't get all this elaborate back story, that wasn't their job.
The Truth is the design really doesn't warrant an hour long discussion. At most you talk about the choices, how the CGI was created, how long it took and perhaps the process.

I think there IS an unspoken understanding. Doug knows the show's format by now and it's focus is for the sake of the fans. It doesn't mean he isn't annoyed. I don't think it's a serious annoyance. It think it was a serious annoyance when he was first on the show. And if you doubt that, he's not the only one that has been annoyed by details of a story they didn't write. Tim Russ looked like he was going deliver a vulcan death grip on Sam after his question about USS Voyager.
Doug is getting popular on this show. He's said it in this video. These artist are getting MUCH deserved attention like they never had before. They are no longer 'unsung' heroes'. Sam and Stuart have brought their work to the forefront to the benefit of both fans and these professional and amateur artist. Tim Russ probably wanted to help promote Renegades and Trekyards was an easy 25,000 viewers. It's a no brainier. While these guys have clout already in Star Trek, Trek Yards it's a POWERFUL plat form and connects all sorts of people together.
I see huge possibilities for the channel. I hope they improve their quality and not just increase their quantity of shows. I'm still kinda waiting for the polished feel other shows have on You Tube, such as Spacedock, The Film Theorist, Vintage Space and Vsauce. I criticism them because I love them. I want to see them excel.

The Enterprise D and this ship are two of the ugliest federation vessels I've ever seen associated with star trek.
I liked many designs and disliked many designs, both "canon" and non-canon.
My own personal opinion... I dont like it. I dont enjoy looking at it. Not trying to be snarky or mean. Just being honest.
You know what I appreciate? The fact that you just said you don't like it, rather than make up a bunch of technical-sounding reasons you don't like it that don't really make logical sense. It's okay to just not like things!
It's hard to break down the numbers simply.
-Lets say this is like connecting half an Aircraft Carrier to a mass equal to 27 aircraft carriers with just a 15 foot I-Beam in between.
-Engineering Load Stresses depend on the thickness of the material compared to the two counter weights it connects.
*In other words: If you're on a see-saw and the person on the other end is too fat the see-saw will break under load.*
New materials like carbon nano tubes will add considerable strength 2-3 times more than normal. You would need a structure a million times more strong for the J Class Enterprise. So lets say you had a magic field that could take up the slack. Well what point is there in using matter if Energy can bearing that much of the load.
