Yes! The Sovereign Class is my favorite Starfleet ship class and the Enterprise E, my favorite Enterprise. I love just about everything about the design of this ship: the lines, the curves, the balance, the minimized "neck", the weapons load out, the support craft. I wish it would have been seen in more than just three feature films; it looked so stately from almost any angle. Strong, stately, and swift.

The Enterprise E *is* a reincarnation of the TOS E in certain respects.
The balance of the pieces, longer engines sweeping back. The blue quantums coming out of the nose on the saucer (very in tune with the way the torpedoes used to fire out of the TOS E.)
The dish fits into that design concept.

The Enterprise E was pretty sweet looking in the nebula shot in First Contact. Very appropriate shot for the hero ship. And of course the E was just so awesome anyway. The battleship of Starfleet and packed with the best that Starfleet had to offer in technology and crew. Just what a flagship should be. Wasn't the warp drive design on the E designed to reflect efficiency and power, but also the whole "subspace pollution" thing?

I was also too young to see First Contact when it came out, I was 10 years old and First Contact was a 12 rating. Generations was the first Star Trek movie I was able to see in the cinema and because of how big a fan of Star Trek I was, my parents told the guy at the ticket desk I was 12 to get me in. I will always be thankful to them for that. When that first shot of the E in the nebula came onto the screen I still remember my jaw dropping. Loved it straight away.

The shuttlebay area was changed between the FC and Nemesis versions, some side walls and integration with the secondary hull, also the warp nacelle pylons were angled higher for the Nemesis version. I've always loved the E. Ever since seeing it in First Contact in 96 after getting out of high school. The fact it hearkened back to the Constipation Class 1701/-A with a modern update. Turning the saucer from the D sideways was very clever from a design point. Gave it a sleekness . I just didn't like it from the front profile. Looked odd.
Also the deflector dish was colored copper/yellow to evoke the TOS Enterprise from what I remember reading at the time.

I currently am using the Noble-Class variant of this ship in STO. It's really good & pretty durable for what I usually end up doing. The only time it's failed me was in the Tholian Red Alert in Sector Space. Me & my team got slaughtered so much, they ended up camping our spawn & slaughtering us before we could fight back with any reasonable chance of success. We ended up failing the Alert by way of the timer ending... Though I survived the Borg Red Alert 3 separate times the same day....

The Enterprise-E ties for 3rd with the Enterprise-D, as my favorite Enterprise (TMP being #1, and TOS being #2). It is one sleek ship! I was surprised when I found out how small the Enterprise-E is compared to the Enterprise-D. I had thought the saucers were the same size. I prefer the First Contact version of the Enterprise-E. I wish we could have seen a completed repaired version of the Enterprise-E after the end of Nemesis.

Contrary to what we see on TV and the Films a space battle with ships like these present a minimal profile which is basically a line. As such it would make it incredibly hard to target sections of a ship unless you were right on top of it. Even so I can envision a battle where if you were to fly at a ship you would position the ship such that your side profile would always be presented. Only when you get into a battle with multiple ships would center top and bottom present a target. Two ships in battle together the winner would be the one with the best turning. Two matched ships while trying to get the upper or lower hand would mostly stay flat within the same moving plane.

I love the Sovereign-class. I was disappointed in the deck plans, they only had 23 decks and way too few labs and holodecks. I run a LUG Star Trek RPG set in 2380 onboard the USS Endeavour NCC-79601 the first ship designed with the Quantum Slipstream Drive. USS Mercury was the first test bed but Endeavour (named for the former space shuttle) was the first purpose built and required the basic Sovereign design to be modified. I can just see a Sovereign doing 300-light-years per hour covering a sector (20-ly) in 4-minutes being sent out to trace out threats towards the delta quadrant. I even put a 72-man Starfleet Marine Company onboard commanded by a Major (O-4/Lt Cmdr) and even designed METCAR Mk.2 (Multi-Environment Tactical Combat ARmor) just for fun and one Vulcan Intelligence officer has a pet Sehlat onboard which the marines have adopted as a mascot much to the major's frustration.

I love what you guys do... just please remember that ILM has cared about form over function for a loooooong time. The Nascelles are longer just because the artist thought it better balanced the design. Maybe Utopia Planetia designers work the same? Sovereign was a step backwards. At best a lateral move in ship design. Especially in universe the other designs had 50 year reigns. In-universe it means the Galaxy was slated for replacement two years after it launched - assuming it was a reaction to Wolf 359 and not using JJ-style magic to design and build ships. The technical manual for the Galaxy class said it took like a decade from design to launch.

Like Andrew Probert said, the deflector dish color depends on the power output. Perhaps the Enterprise-E deflector runs so efficiently that it requires less power? Therefore the copper colour, which fits into the low power mode deflector colour of the Enterprise Refit in TMP? Iunno, that's always been my reasoning/head canon.

  • @mikestoast

On the scaling. What you use is not a true reflection of the size of the ships. The Ent-D has useable Hull for 95%+ of the ship, the Ent-E length is nearly 1/3 nacelle or not useable space.
If you were to just use the hulls and not the overly aggressive swept back nacelles, the Ent-E is only ~2/3 the length of the D, which makes for a very short ship.
Going forward, you should cut out the extra length provided by long sweeping nacelles. In the 'every Enterprise Comparison' if you cut out the extra length added by the nacelles, the Ent-D is a massively large ship when compared to those that came before and after.

Those dark grey blocks on the struts look like they may be ablative armour blocks (like Prometheus has).
Because there is such a large time gap between the C & The D it's a shame really that there isn't something else between the two - especially when the painting version with it's chins looks so right for a era just prior to the D - but I do like the regular C as a continuation of the Motion Picture era style very much too.
I still think it's a shame we didn't get to see the Ambassador Class barely at all in DS9 It is a ship i'd like to see more of - but then the same is true of both the Galaxy and the Sovereign too.
The sovereign class is something i'd like to see whizzing about with other ships of the post Voyager Era.
Maybe they can come up with some premise to use the 24/25th Century again on TV once Discover is done with.

My take on the Enterprise's evolution is very similar to how I look at the Doctor from 'Doctor Who.' The same way that Ten has the whimsy of Four and the intensity of Nine, the Enterprise-E takes its cues from the B, while the C goes back to the TOS and the A but morphs *just* slightly on its way to the D. They all carry something forward from their immediate predecessors to the point that nothing is ever truly *lost* from one generation to the next.

"remember when we used to be explorers?" I think that line is important from picard. It betrays the role of the sovereign class. indeed thats probably why it was named "sovereign class". Just look at the size difference. The Galaxy is a bit larger, its built for exploration. Thats why Galaxy ships are made for comfort with room for individual quarters and families, it has the speed to run away and the weapons to defend itself when it cant. The Sovereign class ships wont leave the Sovereign territory of the Federation, it's designed for military missions and thats it. No families or extra places for comfort and moral. its made for combat, patrols, and "show the flag" missions, it has stores of armories and it seems maybe a barracks for ground combat and boarding or capturing ships (there was a lot of security teams in First Contact) its indeed a ship that reflects the federation policy from peaceful first contact to defending its territory from its powerful enemies they kept collecting.

It may sound strange but for me the list for best design using the name Enterprise would look like this:
      1.Excelsior Refit (B)
      2.Galaxy (D)
      3.Ambassador (C)
      4.Constitution Refit (A)
      5.Sovereign (E)

I *truly* wished that the Higher Ups had followed "Mr. Scott's Guide To The Enterprise" and named the Constitution Refit the "Enterprise Class". IMO the Refit was so very different from the Original Connie that reclassifying all Constitution Class-Refits (which I would imagine Starfleet would have done between ST:TMP & ST:TWOK to extend the lifespan of the entire class of the "Workhorses of the Federation" as "Enterprise Class" ships) would have been a wonderful gesture to both the show and the fans who kept Trek alive during the "Syndication 70's" as well as making all the potential confusion when talking about the Constitution Class - "Are you discussing the TOS Enterprise or the First 3 Films Enterprise?"

Dayum, I really love these high res renders. Are they original? Eitherway where can I get them, I use to refer to these kind of renders when I was drawing star trek ships be like blueprint style or massive battle in childhood!

It seems like the impulse engines would, by their design, direct a lot of their thrust upward...

    • @armymatt83
      @armymatt83 7 лет назад

impulse engines use thrust vectoring so while it might look like by the shape of the exhaust assembly that it would direct exhaust upward it doesn't really mean anything. yes it probably would make banking turns or pitching up easier but it really makes no difference.

Targeting the bridge would be fairly difficult from the fore, side or aft, impossible from below. It's only a target from above. The entire ship is a bigger target from above. I don't think the bridge is a vulnerable spot.

I'm not the biggest fan of the soverign.
On the one hand I prefer the physical balance of the ship being more in line with the classic Trek ships like Excelsior and the refit. More of a long graceful looking ship.
Tonally, though, I prefer the Galaxy Class and what it represents in terms of Star Trek.
The Enterprise E was designed to fight. Good on her. Ultimately though, Star Trek is about solving problems with intelligence. Most of the best episodes of TNG, even if shooting is involved, are about solving a problem with intelligence in one form or another. RESOLVING a crisis, not DESTROYING things.

I have two problems. First of all if it’s a warship why does it have so many windows? Those are a ton of weak points. You’d think they would purposely have some heavy bulkheads that would slam down over every window when the ship goes to red alert? When your shields go a phaser can go right through my bedroom lol. The other issue is they never physically protect the warp core. You would think they would have some sort of plating that would engage over the entire core that could take shocks. For a New warship the sovereign had its warp core damaged in the first blow. The D’s warp core was breached by a 20 year old tiny bird of prey.

Point-for-point @ 15.38.. NX-01 has Too Large of a Saucer. TOS 1701's Saucer is too small. 1701-A has a ring-outer too much on the saucer.. 1701-B is too Small by at least two outer rings, and 1701-C is too large by, at least, an outer ring. One 'Odd' thing, you guys never note "why' the Disk fore-structure, as if you never got the 'design ideal' of F.J.'s ships. The Idea was to allow Crew to 'cross to an area' in minimal-time from any-other station, and to let the ship (if hull was intact) to 'fly' into an atmosphere as a 'safe landing' device/lifeboat. The 'Connies' and 'DN-Federations' were two 'life boats' in one hull. Oh, and, btw, a DN's saucer is a bit smaller, than the 1701-B, so, SOME ONE has 'Scale' Issues (um, Feet, and CM are, a tad different) {don't be lke Nasa/ESA going to Mars)...
I am an SFB player since '80, and have the Meanest Orion ever, the OCS 'Injustice'...

Maybe the darker colors of the Nemesis version reflect an addition of ablative armor during the Dominion War. Would make sense that she was up-armored and up-gunned for the war.

    • @tyranusfan

Right. But, they did need to drydock and get a new warp core after that battle, so maybe that refit added all the upgrades.

I like the idea of Trekyards WOW!. It would need an exclamation point. TY WOW! would be a hyped up infomercial for the show. It would demonstrate Star Trek technology in the same way cheesy products are sold on late night TV. The two of you would talk about the wonders of a bit of tech and the extremely low cost because the economics of the future are different.. After the two of you do the initial pitch you would bring on Doug Drexler as your special guest to seal the deal.
Doug would introduce a bit of film where the Enterprise with a single torpedo would destroy the Death Star. Or perhaps an Enterprise crew member getting food out of the replicator. This would be contrasted by a storm trooper eating a crummy field ration. Thus proving Star Trek tech superior to that of inferior brands of science fiction.
I know this is a silly idea. Even so, a couple of episodes about a couple pieces of tech would be fun. And I think Mr. Drexler would be great at it and think it was a hoot.
Also the one area Trek appears to be lacking is a Circus Ship. They have a troupe of actors who murder people roaming the universe why not clowns? We have never been connected to a planetary genocide.
Some where there should be a circus entertaining amoung the stars. Every other conceivable type of person has been represented in Star Trek except for my people.
I hope this this finds you well. And gives you ideas.
    Zeeppo

Interesting there's no mention of the connection between the Enterprise E and the Intrepid class Voyager designs. Other than the engine nacelles and the struts, they are very similar designs.

    • @kutulukutu
      @kutulukutu 7 лет назад

JarOfRats Because they're both designed AFTER Starfleet needed to find a method of warp thst didn't tear the fabric of space time. The genesis can be found in Next Gen. ALL Starfleet vehicles now have that look. So, you are right! and they are beautiful. And I just over trekked. Sorry.

8:46 So are you saying that it is on its way to evolve out of its secondary hull?
Something else, is there a definitive answer to the top speed of the Sovereign-class? I recall it going somewhere around warp 8 in “Star Trek: Nemesis”.
12:34 Now I know what that one person meant by the E looking like a Borgified ship to them.
16:12 The difference between the E and the F is comparable to the A and the B.
18:50 It looks like that area could lift off in a similar fashion to Andrew Probert’s Enterprise-C.

    • @Acrosurge
      @Acrosurge 7 лет назад

It travels at warp 8 in one of the movies, although this was not claimed to be the top speed for the Sovereign Class. The book Star Trek: Ships of the Line, gives the Sovereign class a top speed of Warp 9.995. I think this consistent for its size, power generation, and advanced warp nacelles.

I have done some research and considering how the USS Prometheus was the fastest ship in the fleet at stardate 51462 after the Sovereign-class was launched the three numbers I have seen for its top speed would make sense if the Enterprise-E in “First Contact” (stardate 50893.5) had a top speed of warp 9.7.
Then, incorporating lessons learned from the Prometheus-class and refining it have the Enterprise-E refit we see in “Star Trek: Nemesis” have a top speed of warp 9.985 and finally with technology incorporated from the Delta Quadrant in its final refit in the final moments of the movie give it a top speed of warp 9.995. (Sources in order: Starship Spotter, Star Trek: Evolutions, Ships of the Line.)
