This is the first time I’ve seen someone from the production team of any of the new shows who seems genuinely happy to be there.
Strange new worlds cast and crew deffinitely are
You can clearly see, that he is one of us. He radiates with such joy when he talks about his show.
It's obvious he's a fan.
ONE OF US! ONE OF US! ONE OF US!
gooble gobble gooble gobble!
This guy is basically living the dream, and he's a pure Star Trek fan.
I love that he's working with the Okudas, too.
@MonkeyZorr I can guaran-fucking tee that he knows more about Star Trek than you ever will.
@@Nimmo1492 A logical assumption 🖖
@@GamingMagic3280 @Nimmo1492 Logical assumption based on what exactly? Do you know MonkeyZorr? Mike himself admitted he didn't know as much as fans like Captain Foley & Commander Cockings do: 1:38. Then he goes on PR-talk rant about how CBS are very careful with presenting the Trek IP. I know some of you want to be pro optimistic but to quote Admiral PottyMouth *"Shut the fuck up"*
@@KLamki1 You shut up i was bring nice and you had to ruin it.
I have to say, I was expecting to hate Lower decks, but I have really grown to love this show. the Cyborg guy is by far my fav person on the ship.
Yes, when they released that preview before the premiere, I found it off-putting. (Mainly because I don't think that serious injury is funny.) But, I decided to give it a chance. And, I've largely been enjoying it! 🖖😄
@@bazzokzwattom2655 I mean, serious injuries aren't funny irl, but did you not enjoy Dr. Bashir making a joke on Martok's behalf when he almost got himself killed in the holodeck?
ruclips.net/video/4hOW313q788/видео.html
@@CptPeo Maybe that was a little funny, but there's also a difference. In that DS9 clip, Bashir isn't really joking about Martok's injury. He's chiding Martok over his obstinateness not to take his impairment seriously. In the initial scene of Lower Decks, the severing of Boimler's femoral artery is treated as a punchline.
@@bazzokzwattom2655 Meh. In Mariner's words: "We live on a spaceship! No one is dying from a [sword] wound."
The femoral would have also bled way more than Boimler did.
you guys need dress uniforms for these occasions
Ha! We went with our fancy cameras instead!
Exactly 👌
Wow.... having Mike on the show - fantastic achievement. Great job, guys.
I want the California class in STO.
Oh you know its coming!
Rather have that Vancouver vessel.
power543 They should make it a Tier 1 ship
No You I get that but making it a lower tier ship would go with the show. An unimportant ship should be a less powerful one.
I hope STO will not put it in a lock box although I see a 99% possibility for this to happen...
He had me at "The Okuda's" :)
Yes, clearley sooo much more love and aphresiation in this show and having talked to Mike a bit while not recording...he really is the right guy to lead this new Trek show.
Damn, that's lovely. :) Not a single thing about Lower Decks disappoints.
Wow this makes me even more excited the future of Lower Decks!
I'm so glad you got him. Well deserved.
How can anybody not love what this nice man do?
You can see he's living his dream.
Mike McMahan, if you’re reading this, thanks for caring about keeping this show Trek and not going on some weird reboot where starfleet ships are powered by magical tardigrades. Best Trek since Enterprise, it’s been a long time getting from there to here lol. Best wishes.
I'm so proud of you guys for getting this interview. An he's an awesome guy for doing it.
I REMEMBER the Cerritos Auto Mall!! It was just south of LA on the 405! I lived in LA from 1998-2007 and anytime I would travel south I would pass the Auto Mall. And yes, the radio ads we’re everywhere!!
Close, it’s the 605
Samuel’s face after he said CBS is careful with Star Trek. :)
I was thinking the same thing Samuel was.
Murph's Models weren’t we all?
I feel like this is his idea of how trek is handled by CBS due to his experience with making his show.
8:06 "Everyone at CBS is extremely careful with Star Trek" *nod nod nod* Just smile and nod smile and nod...
This guy has a great position, why bite the hand that gives him the means to pay his bills, esp. during Covid? Besides, (in a whisper) CBS be watching...butter up their ears till they drip!
Yes, the pilot, from a script point of view, is extremely careful. Even if there are zombies. I don't know why zombies shouldn't be considered classic trek, though. It's not the first time you see an alien pathogen taking control of people in star trek.
Also, the Borg are kind of like zombies.
@@bazzokzwattom2655 absolutely
They couldn't have picked a better name for a "lower decks" ship that plays second fiddle to the heros of the Federation like the Enterprise than an an unremarkable suburban town at the edge of Los Angeles. Like an ant next to a giant.
You can see that he has the same passion for the show as the rest of the fans do.
The only thing that makes me a bit sad is the fact that there are only six episodes left. I can already feel the depression after the last episode aired. Let's just hope season 2 comes around quick. And then season 3. And 4, 5, ...
Its been great thus far! shame that CBS has forced us international viewers to look elsewhere to watch this show.
@@katakisLives Agreed.
EVERY video is always "hey, I'm Captain Foley.... and I'm *very quick mumble*"
Ah, you will get used to it my friend! It's Commander Cockings, he is from England.
I suspect we are a bit hard to understand to the British as well, but it does become easier as you get acquainted, and it is worth it!
Both are great guys and contribute so much to the fandom.
Hang in there, and welcome to the community!
:)
@@Jack_Stafford He does need to turn up his microphone a little, though. It's not that I can't understand his accent so much as I can't hear what he's saying to begin with.
@@Jack_Stafford oooooh thats his name lol i misheard the first time weeks ago. just been going with 'the funny mumble guy' since. Nice to put a name to the face. Cockings. lol
It would be against tradition to do otherwise! :D
That's his signature greeting.
The only thing I know the city of "Cerritos" for is the "Cerritos Auto Square".
As a long removed native Southern Californian, the first thing I though of when I heard the name “Cerritos” was the “Cerritos Auto Square”... 👍 fun to know that the commercial stuck in other people’s head.
I used to live fairly close to Cerritos and I'd go to the mall there all the time.
Great now I’m singing the jingle in my head 😂
Coming next season: USS Cal Worthington.
I like this guy, he seems to have his head in the right place. Obviously, he has to pamper CBS a little when speaking publically, so he has to make stuff up about how they care about Trek. It's not that because Star Wars had a successfull animated show, they suddenly are open towards the idea of animated Trek.
Finally. Been waiting for this. Hope u asked right questions
I'm now more excited than ever for the rest of this show!!!
Congrats on getting this interview! You guys really deserve it. You work your butts off every day trying to bring all of us fans great, in depth, star trek content! You do it very well. I'm so glad you guys exist and you provide me with another entertaining perspective on all things trek.
I have found it funny how seriously you guys have drilled into lower decks. Sometimes I feel like you've done more Lower Decks break downs than Picard lol. For a show that is a parody and not serious trek, you have been able to produce very entertaining views about every little detail.
I also want to thank Mike for coming on. Fans can be tough critics, but we really do appreciate anyone that shows a passion for what we care about too. He comes off as someone that really likes trek and is into squeezing in references and giving us that warm, nostalgic feeling. So for that, he had already created the best Trek since Enterprise. Kurtzman is lucky he can put his name on this lol.
The show isn't perfect and, for me personally, the humor and some of the characters fall flat, making it an ok sci fi parody behind say futurama or rick & Morty, but it scores high on the attention to detail that us fans can dissect. I really hope this leads us back to good, serious Trek. We need a showrunner with real passion for Trek.
Score! Great interview. Should of asked where the shuttle bay is! Lol
Oh we did...see next interview ;)
Every Episode of Lower Decks (till Ep6 so far) just felt like Star Trek at its core.
I love it so much! THX Mike. Thank you so much!
Congrats to Mike for having a Trek show with characters that are actually... fun...
The other ship in the last episode was called La Merced, I believe. I was wondering why the names were in Spanish. I was glad to see it.
Ray Hernandez Its just Merced actually... California was invaded/Conquered by Spain/Mexico before it became part of the US. Many cities names stem from that history.
Excellent interview guys!
This interview was music to my ears & food for my Star Trek soul...
Indeed a great job getting this interview with him! Hope he doesn't take your reviews and the occasional criticism too personal :-D. Look forward to seeing the other parts of the interview. Now I also know why he's been doing the Lower Decks intros the last few videos. I had him confused with the hat guy Cpt Foley did a Sherlock Interview with. :-D
LOL we do say in the intro...that he is the creator of Lower decks so im not sure why you would be confused ^.^
And yes it was a blast but he is a professional and a creative and our critisim is always very spefic and understandable...since the show is mostley praice...when we do call something out its pretty specific and fair! Nice chap!
Great job on landing this interview. I really enjoy your Trek content!
Great interview guys looking forward to more!
I don't know how anyone can hate this guy. His enthusiasm and knowledge makes me like the show even more. 🖖
It’s great to see a fan in charge.
It really is.
He's working with the Okudas?? I might have to start watching this show now. Now, if they were going to mimick the US Navy, a class called the "California class" would be a class of ships all named after states... because California is a state. BUT, it's a step in the right direction.
@@Tuskin38 No, they did it with the Runabouts on Deep Space Nine.
No You The runabouts are very much underrated little ships.
@@Ostermond the Ganges, The Orinoco.. loved the names...
Could be closer to British sorts of naval naming systems. Like the WWII weapon class destroyer
Wait, if it's California class, the ships will be named after california's stuff, cities in this case.
If you want ships named after states, it should be United States class
I like that he's talking to people. The producers are usually rather closed off during the shows. That's a fun story about Cerritos name. I like the idea there are so many ships that the names vary and why wouldn't they with a registry up in the 70k. Who knows what the town might have turned into in this universe in the future.
We thought he was doing more interviews then he is...hes actually doing very few so we feel very lucky! hopefully its because of our reputation etc and YES the other producers and such stayed away from doing interviews and being questioned by fans but Mike..we got him within a few weeks! Crazy!
@@power543 Nice get! It's well earned I feel. You guys are always genuine and fair.
Can't wait to see the rest!
Mike, you have definitely made a fun show. Crazy characters, fun storylines, and of course our favorite subject, SHIPS. For a cartoon, the canon is really well preserved. You can tell that your crew knows what most Trekkies want to see and you are delivering it.
As always, please continue making it so 🖖🏼
Very nice that you guys have this kind of acess. I recently had the first look in a long time at my "Abbos" Tab and couldnt bleieve what I was missing from just going by youtube recommendations.
Because of you I now binged Lower Decks and I really liked it. The added info from your channel helped me like it more,
Mike congratulations! This is the best Star Trek show since Voyager! It's great and has so many references and I love it and I wish this show to have at least 7 enjoyable seasons!
What a scoop!
I can't wait for the next parts to the interview.
Hi guys, I am happy for you both to have had the time to speak with a main part of the show. I like that you are appreciated for what you bring to the fans in your knowledge of the history of Star Trek. You are very much apart of the understanding of fans like me that wish to know the in depth look at a particular subject.
So on that WHY is the other California class ship BLUE division lines on the bridge and bulkheads where the saucer connects? and not on the Cerritos.
Very much to Mr McMahan, thank you for Lower Decks -- Star Trek is back 😄
How cool, well done you guys!
Knowing details of the IP and being able to answer in depth. wow.
Episode 4 is the best so far!
Wooooo Sacramento... my home town/city area woooo
That cool ship
Thanks so much for these, dudes! So glad this show exists, that there's a showrunner who's one of us, and that you guys put so much work and love into these!! :)
The man that saved Trek ♥️
A real star trek fan
ohhhh, so many questions I can think of that I'd pose to Mike McMahon, I sure you guys will do so :), good job so far.
A great interview fellows! Nice job! So positive & how can anyone say this guy does not love Trek? Thanks again!
He said we're gonna Geek Out on Lower Decks... he was SO RIGHT!!
8:10 Well, CBS sure messed it up with the previous 2 series.
We assume he meant CBS cared about Trek in relation to letting him do his show the way he knew it had to be done, rather than interfearing or having Alex Kurtzman have much control which lead to Disco S1-2 and Picard. Because of that from Mikes Perspective CBS really care about Trek and we have got this wonderful show!
The fact that he knows there's bio filters in a transporter... show's he's a real fan, and after seeing this interview I am that much more confident that he's the right man at the helm for this show. One thing you guys pointed out that stood out is the fact that it's actually not easy to put together a show like lower decks. It's at the end of the day a star trek show, and moving it into a new genre of an animated comedy is even is more harder. But I have to say from what I can see from the passion put into the show; I think we're in for a treat in the coming episodes / seasons. Although the haters will say JJ trek... and discovery are real star trek... which i don't necessary disagree with, we really couldn't have gotten here without those movies/series. It was kinda the hoops we needed to go through to get to where we ere today, and I'm sure glad that we have. Lower decks to me as a long time star trek fan, is the era accurate post nemesis trek we've truly been waiting for and deserve. Kudos to Mike McMahan and the Trekyards team for bringing back that optimism to star trek that's been lacking for the last decade. Thank you guys !
Thanks, Trekyards! Great interview. I live in OC and was wondering if it was named after the city.
Fantastic video guys made my day.
I’d like it a million times if RUclips would let me.
6:46. TEN-di with an E
Yes...now it will be the question of...do we go with the show creator...or how the charater says her own name xD its tricky Jill!
Great work!
Amazing Interview!
Just the comment at 8:05 made me giggle a little bit, haha.
I would love to see some of the contemporary ships come alongside the Cerritos, like Akira class, Sovereign class, Galaxy class. Y'know, the familiar designs from the TNG-DS9-YOV era, and the evolutions that shook out after the Dominion War that maybe we didn't get to see.... but alongside the California class.
Carnt wait to find out where the shuttle bay is, the story with the ship registry (or if its answered in the show) and the reason for the missing covers on the Bussards (my guess its armor to protect them and the ship isn't thought to need it)
All asked and answered in later interviews!! ;) :D
They dented the covers on a planet's rings and are too lazy to fix them
lower decks is my favorite of all current trek shows
Dammit! I knew it was the U.S.S. Cerritos Auto Square. Dot Com! .
BTW, bit of nitpicky trivia, Rubidoux strictly speaking isn't a city rather it's an unincorporated community. But, by the 24th Century, who knows?
buy a car at the Cerritos auto square, ive heard that line on the radio since i was born.
Auto Square is what they call a Borg Cube.
I was so happy to see the USS Sacramento a.k.a. The Sac😊
I hope the reason the ship name and registry are missing from the front of the primary hull will be explained.
it will ;)
Nice! 👍
Nice indeed.
I have only seen the pilot. But from what I can tell a star ship has no enlisted of note (except miles). It would have been nice to see the lower deck crowd be headed up by a single ensign with an enlisted crew.
I can't express how badly I want a California-Class USS Covina and much more advanced and bigger class USS West Covina. Only a few people would get the joke, but to those who do it would be hilarious!
So, I can't quite pinpoint, where the intro theme is from! Please enlighten me :D
This man has saved Star Trek!
Can't wait to see those schematics
Best showrunner since Manny Coto.
I wonder if they got that zombie idea from the Avalon universe.
Damn, he really name dropped the Solvang knowing what he did to it lol
Watched the first five episodes, great stuff! unfortunate its not got an international release, but of course there are ways around that little problem! hopefully Disco will get an international release
I have that lamp behind him next to my desk. heh.
Needs a walkon Horta ensign
I am so glad to see that someone else thinks so. I was thinking the same thing! I remember they had a Horta ensign in one of the Star Trek books years ago.
Just noticed the stupid bridge window 🤦
I believe they've said it's not a window. The very first version of the Constitution had a sensor panel (or something like that) that looked just like a bridge window too.
I'm going to step on some TNG fan toes; Ceritos is way more cool a ship than the Galaxy class!! The Vancouver even more cool!
I would like to know why Star Trek never shows any of those rooms that have windows on the ceiling or floor considering that most of the windows are one the top or bottom of the saucer section. And what happens if you stand on one of those windows on the underside where there’s no artificial gravity? That’s one of my complaints about ship design in ST; they’re not really designed with the windows taken into account.
Everyone at CBS is really careful about star trek?
Somebody should tell Alex Kurtzman.
What's with the stripe?
WHATS WITH THE STRIPE
ON THE HULL?!?! I NEED TO KNOW WHY THESE SHIPS HAVE DIFFERENT COLOUR STRIPES!!!!!
Its an engeneering ship :) We talk about it in the next interview part
@@power543 And Merced is scientific ship.
Well, could yellow mean ops to, or combination? But, for sure, we saw in the first episode they install communication equipment.
Ooh, science ship or Blue Lives Matter? Keeps you guessing.
I will say is if the SANTA ROSITA doesn’t have “A Big W” on it, I will be severely disappointed.
“Lower Decks” has been such a treat. I’ve had a bunch of honest laughs, and kudos to Mike and team for bringing the funny to a franchise that can be all too humorless.
Where is engineering??????? What is in the pod at the bottom of the ship.
Comeing in a later interview video! This is the intro one before we get into the hard hitting ship questions ;)
Answers cometh! :O
Thanks for getting back to me . I cant wait for the answer. 🖖🏾
Will we see a shuttle named Lassen
Or: Mike McMahan Official INterview Final.
You only asked 1 question. Where is the rest of the interview? It is a good interview but there are so many unanswered questions... Will there be another video for all of the other ship related questions? Looking forward to it.
As we said in the video this is a part 1, this takes the introduction...1 question and outro to make a longer video and there will be 2 follow up videos which have 2 hard core ship questions and answers each.
This was done so there is a clear and searchable title for each video, since there such clear questions rather than having a 20min interview called - Mike interview asi doubt as many people would click on it for the general ness.
Stay tuned for more! :)
@@power543 Oh, sorry. I missed that part because I was more focused on the interview itself. I tend to zone out when a video starts out by talking about the video before the video starts, so sorry about that. Looking forward to the future videos. Good work.
he said tEndi! now im confused.
That's her name and how it's spelled
@@PixelatedH2O other characters call her tindi though
@@S1nwar do you have any specific examples that I can rewatch to check that?
This was a great interview. I really want to give Lower decks a viewing (can't at the moment as I live in the UK) as it looks like the most "Trek" thing made by CBS. From what I have seen in reviews it puts Picard and Discovery to shame.
Star trek is the first place ✨
Get some Rick and Morty spoilers off him.
Those pylons are too long! It's like they wanted to make it silly looking... The starship is part of the humor!
So when are we gonna see the USS Cal Worthington and USS Keyes on Van Nuys?
U.S.S. Fresno or U.S.S. Hanford, please! Or at least the U.S.S. San Joaquin
A hesitant statement of thanks for being the show runner and hope the show puts a lot of the divisive plots and styles behind and progresses a bit closer to Trek of the 80s and 90s.
